WELCOME NOTE
We’ve got loads of good news to share in this issue! Firstly, Jetstar Asia
Airways’ sister airline Jetstar Airways was voted by travellers as the Skytrax
Best Low-Cost Airline Australia/Pacifi c as well as the second-best Low-Cost
Airline in the world. Following on that are the exciting announcements
that we are starting fl ights from Singapore to Ningbo (see news page 71) from 9
September, to Beijing (originating in Melbourne) from 24 November and to Hanoi from
15 December. Also, due to increasing demand from our passengers, we are upping
the frequency of services to Ho Chi Minh City, Taipei, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Bali
and Jakarta.
To help you make the most of those extra fl ights to Taipei, we’ve taken the
opportunity to feature the holiday playground of the local Taiwanese — Kenting. Ever
since the idol drama Wayward Kenting and movie Cape No. 7 were screened, this
seaside spot on the southernmost tip of the Taiwanese peninsula has been a magnet
for fans; we tell you what other attractions you can enjoy on page 50. The other
summer spot to hit is Osaka; fi nd the best ways to appreciate this season on page 59.
August and September are very busy months for Singapore and Singaporeans, not
least because the nation is celebrating her 46th birthday and the F1 Grand Prix returns
to her shores. On our cover, we have Singapore’s favourite singer, Kit Chan, whose
impressive singing chops have seen her win numerous awards as well as star in stage
musicals like Snow.Wolf.Lake, Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress and The Legend.
We fi nd out about her upcoming plans on page 24.
In this Singapore issue, we also urge visiting revellers to partake in other events as
well, and to try some perfectly located new restaurants (page 30).
Things in Bangkok are looking up — we introduce you to some of the city’s most
stylish people and their very cool and modern projects on page 42. At the other
spectrum, let me share with you the rural and historic joys of Hangzhou’s old city,
discovered on a recent whirlwind trip (page 36).
And for all of us who believe in leaving as little a carbon footprint as possible while
on holiday, we’ve spoken to hotels and resorts for insight on how they’re doing their
part to ensure sustainability for the future, on page 64.
Follow the magazine team on Twitter @JetstarAsiaMag and be our fan on Facebook
to check out what we’re doing. And visit jetstarmag.com for the online magazine’s tips
when researching your next holiday.
Also, be the fi rst to know about Jetstar’s extra-special sale fares by signing up as
a JetMail member on Jetstar.com. For your convenience,
Jetstar departs from Changi Airport’s Terminal 1.
Enjoy the fl ight and have a good trip.
HIGH FLYERS
Kite-fl ying enthusiast Cheong
Chun Ti tells us about indoor
kite fl ying, the latest trend at
this year’s NTUC Income Kite
Festival in Singapore.
SO WHAT’S INDOOR KITING?
It’s fl ying a stunt kite in an
enclosed environment [devoid
of moving air]. The kite fl yer
creates ‘apparent wind’ by
moving his/her body and hands
to fi ll the kite’s sail with wind
to generate lift and momentum.
DESCRIBE HOW YOU CHOOSE
YOUR KITES. WHAT TECHNIQUES
DO YOU APPLY TO KEEP THE
KITE BUOYANT?
I choose kites based on their
fl ight performance. A common
factor that affects the kite’s
climb and glide is the sail-toweight
ratio. As for buoyancy,
the best indicator is line
tension. Having a good feel of
the tension allows the fl yer to
read the wind condition.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE THE
FESTIVAL WILL ACHIEVE?
I hope the festival helps in
raising awareness on kiting
among the general public.
The NTUC Income Kite Festival
is a free event held ’til 4 Sep,
at Toa Payoh HDB Hub, ION
BRENDON
FERNANDEZ
The thespian and recent docuhost
Toy Factory Production’s Equus,
about a boy who blinds the horses
he loves
TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE OF
PSYCHIATRIST MARTIN DYSART
IN EQUUS.
Every character in this play is
important but Dysart speaks the
most. Much is left to the audience
to discover to whom he’s talking.
There’s both happiness and despair
— the play is about human emotion
— you’ll experience both when the
characters live out their lives.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IT IS
ABOUT EQUUS THAT MAKES IT A
TIMELESS STORY?
It’s a story about children. Why does
a boy suddenly turn violent, against
society, against his parents? Are
people just born evil? Have we, as
modern people, lost our ability to
feel passion? Why does one go from
extreme love to extreme violence?
All these questions and more beg to
be answered.
HOW TRUE TO THE ORIGINAL IS
THE TOY FACTORY VERSION?
We are faithful to the text, which is
well written and strong. With our
young cast, there’s a new kind of
physicality and youthful energy.
GOOD TASTE
BEYOND
PEANUTS
We want more from the bar snack
menu than just wings and assorted
nuts. Here are some places that
serve real food with their cocktails
1
REASON TO TIPPLE
The always-daring Ryan Clift,
chef and owner of Tippling
Club in Singapore, is renowned for
his creative and playful culinary
offerings. So it makes sense that
Tippling Terrace — his alfresco bar
— has an equally innovative menu
of bar snacks to match its summer
cocktails. There’s no pre-packaged
or reheated frozen food here. The
entire Tippling team of bar and
kitchen have worked together
to concoct tasty snacks to tempt
the palate. Think confi t duck bao,
truffl e risotto and polenta fries with
homemade ketchup. Wash these
down with signature cocktails such
as Hello Mother (Ketel One vodka,
Burmese citrus, Burmese honey
and bitters) and you’ve got the
perfect combo.
WHAT MAKES THE TIPPLING CLUB
SNACKS DISTINCTIVE?
It’s classic snacks but done with a
signature Ryan Clift twist; this is our
point of difference from other bar
snacks. They are made fresh and from
scratch. We maintain the highest
standards by making everything by
CLOCKWISE FROM
hand, not using food out of packets
and thrown in the fryer.
HOW SHOULD THE SNACKS
BE EATEN?
They are designed to be shared and
enjoyed with a group of friends in a
casual atmosphere.
HOW IS CONCEPTUALISING A BAR
SNACK MENU DIFFERENT FROM A
RESTAURANT MENU?
Bar snacks should be things that are
tasty and complement the cocktails.
They should also be affordable
for everyone.
WHAT MAKES THE PERFECT
BAR SNACK?
Good variation. They should be
hearty and complete the experience
of drinking cocktails with friends.
Our snacks whet the appetite for
more cocktails.
ARTS LOUNGE
Clean, white,
geometric
with soft lighting, chillout
music and choice
artworks make Hôtel
hotel in Siem Reap. The
Meric restaurant has
helped bring world-class
city. So it’s
no surprise that its Arts
Lounge makes for one of the coolest
hangouts in town with some of the
most delectable food.
With lounge beds that swing
tantalisingly from the ceiling, Arts
Lounge is a destination in itself. A
haven for locals and tourists, the
place gets the balance of groove plus
relaxation just right.
Chef Bryan Gardner (formerly of
the Meadowood Resort team who
were recognised with two muchcoveted
Michelin stars) has focused
The Snacks Menu on gourmet
burgers. The Teriyaki, The Mezze
and The Hôtel De La Paix always go
down a treat with a cool beverage.
“We use homemade bread and other
ingredients fresh from the market in
all of our products,” says Christian de
Boer, director of sales and marketing.
“Also, the staff receive a special
burger training course so they are
able to make the ‘perfect burger’.”
The drinks are a cheeky mix of
old world meets new, such as the
Sophisticated but with the
Manila’s occult peddlers offer
unusual cures for the problems of
everyday life
On a bustling streetside in downtown
Manila, Manang Harmin reveals a
rather unusual way to capture a
woman’s heart. “Just before midnight,
pour some oil into this while
whispering her name,” she instructs,
pointing to a tiny vial containing a
gnarled, twisted tree root. “In the
morning, you should fi nd a way to put
some of this oil on her. She must not
know you are doing this, otherwise
the spell won’t work.”
Harmin owns a stall right beside
a massive Spanish-era church, at
the heart of the centuries-old district
of Quiapo. In her tiny store made of
wooden planks, she displays a huge
array of objects whose purpose is far
from anything we might call ‘normal
use’. One of these, a bottle containing
a wooden cross, pine leaves and
seeds, offers protection from bodily
harm. Another curious item is a dried
stingray’s tail, believed to be the only
effective weapon against a dreaded
bloodsucking monster of Philippine
folklore, the aswang.
Unbelievable as this merchandise
might seem to foreigners, Harmin
has been in business here for more
than 35 years, offering supernatural
solutions to the problems of life. She
came courtesy of her mother. “Like
PEOPLE
Back in the mid-1990s,
when Singapore’s music
industry was still very
much operating within its
shores, a young singer surprised
everyone when she broke into the
well-established and
seriously competitive
Mando- and Cantopop
markets of Taiwan and
Hong Kong. This was Kit
Chan, then only in her
20s, whose Mandarin
album Heartache became a big
success in Taiwan in 1994 and
whose performance opposite Hong
musical Snow.Wolf.Lake in 1997
those markets.
The rest, as they say, is history.
For the next 10 years, Kit’s career
She broke into the
competitive Taiwan and
Hong Kong markets
Mandarin, English and Cantonese,
performed in more concerts
and musicals, acted in TV series
and — perhaps what she is most
recognised for in Singapore — was
the voice of a widely broadcasted
Singaporean song “Home”,
written to celebrate the country’s
independence. In 2004, she took
a much-publicised break from the
music and entertainment industry.
Kit stayed away from the
industry for six years. But
they were six formative years,
nevertheless, as she tried
her hand at a corporate job,
dabbled in creative projects
and searched her soul. When
she returned to the scene last year
— with a best-selling Mandarin
was the executive producer of an
extended, multi-artist version of
“Home”, she was a diff erent person.
She had set up her own record label,
Banshee Empire, and was now out
there forging the next era of her
career on her own.
“For the fi rst time,” says Kit, “I
am free from a big record company.
Being a singer feels like a new
thing again and there are
so many things that I didn’t
know I knew and things
I never thought I needed
to know. It’s frustrating
when you run into a wall
or when things aren’t going well,
but in the end you emerge feeling
quite exhilarated and energised.
I appreciate that because before,
with a record company, I felt like I
was being put through a washing
machine. Now, I feel like I’m doing
artisanal work, and it feels great.
“Having my own label is quite
amazing,” she continues. “Banshee
Empire was the name of my singing
group in secondary school! Back
then we were a group of seven girls
called Banshee, and I remember
saying when we graduated that
I wanted to have my own record
company one day and I was going to
call it Banshee Empire. Friends who
grew up with me are very thrilled
“Now, I feel like I’m
doing artisanal work,
and it feels great”
and proud that I’ve done it; in a way
they are happier to see my little
label on the back of my CD than to
see me do a big show. When you
are going on 40 as I am and
see your dream come to fruition,
it’s fantastic.”
Reinterpreting is an album of
covers, Kit’s renditions of beloved
songs that she chose herself,
PEOPLE //
released under her own label. “It
started out as a very wilful thing. I
just sat and wrote down on a piece
of paper the songs I always wanted
to sing that weren’t mine. That’s
how 70% of the album was formed.
I dedicated some of the songs to
important people in my life, such
as “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”
to my best friend of nearly
30 years and “Zhui” to my
boyfriend because he has
been hoping from the day we
met that I will one day sing
it to him,” she says with a
smile. The album has been
released in Singapore and Hong
Kong and is doing so well in the
Chinese territory that Kit is creating
a special version just for that
market, and was in Macau in July
shooting videos for it.
“When I was the charge of a
record company they were always
making me sing very high notes,
thinking that the high notes are
027

PEOPLE
the money notes,” she explains,
touching on one of the things that
irked her. “There are people who
are just KTV singers who judge
your prowess by how high you
can belt and I think that for a lot of
Mandopop that’s also true. I guess
I should be grateful because it has
stretched me as singer, but now that
I am doing my own thing I will not
subscribe to that. So I have quite
deliberately not belted on my new
album at all. I told my producer we
don’t need to prove anything, and I
think people get it.”
So what’s next for this dedicated
songbird? Well, Kit’s return on her
own terms
is no less
driven
than
before,
and
already
she has concerts lined up in
Singapore (October 2011) and Hong
Kong (February 2012). Entitled
Xiang Xiang Kong Jian in Mandarin
and The Music Room in English,
these concerts will see Kit treating
her loyal and solid fan base to old
favourites as well as songs from her
new album. “Almost everything
will be something the audience
wants to hear, plus a few surprises,”
she hints. “I also want to do things
that I don’t usually get to do in my
normal performance space, so there
might be something in a diff erent
language or a diff erent genre. I
hope it will be a night where people
deeply experience the music and a
connection with me. After having
watched many shows, I realise
028
that the ones I really
remember are those are
quite emotive. That’s what
I hope to create.” The
Singapore show will
be performed at the
Grand Theatre at Marina
Bay Sands.
Being able to shape
and choose her own work
has been a career- and
life-changing event. “The
motivation is diff erent,”
says Kit. Using the
universal work model of
farming as an analogy, she
elaborates: “Before, I felt
very much
Kit’s return on her
own terms is no less
driven than before
like an ox,
working
when the
farmer
whipped
me. Now I
am the farmer and I quite happily
wake up and work, even when I’m
xing ku (tired). It’s almost like I’m
operating on a higher level.”
And it shows in her music. “It
has become more natural,” explains
Kit. “Everything just happens now,
whereas before I had to make it
happen. The Hong Kong producer,
who last worked with me in the
1990s, said he was surprised at
how much more relaxed I was.
Before it sounded like I needed
eff ort and now it’s eff ortless. It
makes my work easier too, I just
do it.” When asked if she feels that
she has now found her voice, Kit
nods knowingly and with added
KIT CHAN ON TRAVEL
CAMBODIA: I was there on a
trip with World Vision Singapore
about 10 years ago as their
youth ambassador with a bunch
of tertiary students to build
toilets and playgrounds for kids.
At the end, they were all more
appreciative of what they had and
more sensitive towards others.
JAPAN: It’s one of the places I
like to visit best; I never tire of it.
While Japan is homogenous in a
way, it is also very diverse. The
little towns have their local food,
art and customs that they are very
proud of.
NEW ZEALAND: I went there as a
teenager to perform with the World
Youth Festival. I met an old man in
a nursing home called Mr Turner,
whose words moved me to write
a song, which I will be performing
in my concert. The song is called,
simply, “Mr Turner”. PHOTO: ESPLANADE – THEATRES ON THE BAY

Get into the swing of things as Singapore
celebrates her 46th birthday in August and
gears up for the F1 Grand Prix the following
month. Here’s what else you can do in town
WORDS LYDIA NG
As the island gets ready
to party for two straight
months, there’s no better
time to be in Singapore to
enjoy the best it has to off er.
FUEL UP
With Singapore’s colonial past,
you would expect the island to
be peppered with places serving
up Britfare. Well, the latest is the
quintessentially British eatery The
Jackson Plan (TJP) conceptualised
by Beppe de Vito, the man behind
Il Lido on Sentosa. The 90-seat
gastrobar is named after Lieutenant
Philip Jackson, the engineer who
divided early Singapore into its four
main districts of Chinatown, Chulia
(now Little India), Kampong Glam
and the Eurasian quarter in 1822.
Behind the traditional dishes is Chef
Christopher Dougan from Scotland,
who trained under UK celebrity
chefs Nigel Haworth and Paul
Heathcote. Dig into black pudding, a
sausage made with dried pig’s blood
(it’s tastier than it sounds!), the very
tender pork cheek accompanied by
baked beans made in-house, or the
hearty, homey fi sherman’s pie. To
sweeten the palate, try TJP’s version
of Eton mess (a dessert served at the
famous school), which is dressed
with rum-sautéed mango slices and
gula melaka (palm sugar). And swig
down a cocktail or two whipped
To take in the atmosphere of
Spanish favourites? You
MY JOURNEY
036
Poets, artists and scholars
have found the recently
inscribed World Heritage West
Lake an inspiration for
almost 12 centuries
WORDS ANNE LOH
PHOTO: CORBIS

The beauty and
tranquillity of
West Lake in the
early morning
As the morning mist lifts,
I step out of my cosy, yet
spacious room at the only
village-concept Aman property in
the world, the Amanfayun, to be
greeted by a soft-focus landscape
washed clean by rain in the night.
In the past, my room used to be a
farmer’s house and the 14ha resort
a real-life tea growers’ village – but
the farmer who used to live in it
would be hard-pressed to recognise
the interior now.
I discover a little stream running
through the property, which was
the heart of the village’s life in
the past, and is still throwing off
its vaporous mantle in the rising
humidity of the morning. Crossing
it via a little stone bridge brings me
to the stone-paved Fayun Pathway,

The elegant simplicity of an
Amanfayun suite in a restored
farmhouse; BELOW: Devotees
As I breathe in the moisture-drenched air,
the tranquillity is almost palpable
which runs the length
of the property and allows
public access to the seven
temples that surround
Amanfayun.
As I breathe in the
moisture-drenched air,
the tranquillity is almost
palpable. Walking along
the pathway, the scene
is made more surreal by
the sudden sight of a fl ock of snowwhite
geese frolicking on the banks
of a dreamy, almost teal-green mini
lagoon. Newly onboard Amanfayun
general manager Lukasz Prendke
calls them “excellent security
guards”. I wouldn’t want to put
them to the test.
The peace ends with a ticket
booth at the small exit gate of Fayun
Pathway, where my guide, Felicity,
who works at the Amanfayun
front offi ce, leads me through into
the midst of an absolute sea of
visitors and devotees, who have
come to Lingyin Si (Temple of
Soul’s Retreat), one of the 10 most
important Buddhist temples in
China. At the foot of the 209m
limestone mountain Fei Lai Feng
(Flown From Afar Peak), after
which the whole area is named,
Lingyin Si went through intense
restoration in the mid-90s so what
I see is a mixture of original and
replica fi xtures. This does not stop
the throngs clutching incense
sticks and praying for health from
the Medicine Buddha, or to the
TEA IS THE LIFE
I couldn’t leave Hangzhou
without drinking Longjing
(Dragon Well) tea. It was
conferred imperial status
by Emperor Kangxi, who
was China’s longest
reigning monarch, and
legend has it that the
emperor only drank tea
made from leaves picked
by maidens’ lips. Superior
grade Longjing is picked
between Qing Ming Festival
and before the rains (5-21
April), and roasted by hand
to stop oxidation.
MY JOURNEY //
Sakyamuni — at 24.8m tall, one
of the largest wooden statues in
China — carved from camphor and
covered with gold leaf.
I prefer the quieter Yongfu Si
(Temple of Eternal Bliss), a short
walk away next door, which is
much less visited and peaceful as
a result. It is made up of buildings
with intimate courtyards up the
mountainside, and I make my
way up tiny steps dotted with sage
Buddhist sayings on little signs
embedded in the fl owerbeds. From
the top, on a clear day, you can catch
a glimpse of the famous West Lake.
But for a more up-close
MY JOURNEY
The lovers, the lotus
dancers and the
“bridge to heaven” in
Impressions West Lake
There are many stories surrounding the
West Lake, most of them largely to do
with the meeting and parting of lovers
040
bridges around the peaceful inner
West Lake area, where residents can
be seen practising their wushu or
dancercise moves — a peace broken
only when a speeding cruiser races
towards some errant fi shermen.
Once our little boat breaks out
into the main Outer West Lake
area, the spell is sadly broken as the
skyline of the modern Hangzhou
city appears in the distance. There
are many stories surrounding the
West Lake, most of them largely to
do with the meeting and parting
of lovers. The 2.6km Su Causeway,
built by famous poet and Hangzhou
Governor Su Dongpo during the
early 11th century, is a case in point.
Built with dredged mud from the
lake with willow trees planted on
its banks, this is a popular walk for
lovers to take as the belief is that
they will be together forever if they
walk to the end of the six bridges.
This theme of love found and
lost is the premise of the outdoor
choreographed theatre epic
Impression West Lake by directors
Zhang Yimou, Wang Chaoge and
Fan Yue, with the haunting musical
score by Japanese New Age muso
Kitaro and the main song, Rain,
sung by singer Zhang Liangying.
The underwater stage fl oor —
which makes the cast of 600 look
like they’re dancing on water — the
boat play, lighting eff ects, natural
backdrop of the hills and the jawdroppingly
amazing ‘bridge of
heaven’ that rises out of the lake all
shout what a memorable, only-in-
China production this is. But it’s the
human longing in the separation
scene that lingers on and on. Much
like how I feel when it is time to
New Zealand Chill Factor
Action in Auckland
Whether you want to take it easy or favour to pack
more action on your holiday, Auckland
(www.aucklandnz.com) will keep you engaged. Its
blend of harbour, islands, Polynesian culture and
modern city environment has created a lifestyle
ranked amongst the best in the world.
And the best thing about Auckland is in just half an
hour you can be almost anywhere—sailing to an
island, picnicking on a volcano, meeting marine
animals or digging in to some delicious ice cream and
food at a sidewalk café. The Auckland region has 22
conservation parks, providing endless scope for
outdoor activities.
Chill tips
• Nature & scenery - Some 48 volcanic cones dot
the region, with easy access to the summits of
Maungawhau (Mt Eden), Maungakiekie (One Tree
Hill), and Rangitoto Island in the Hauraki Gulf. In
the heart of the central business district, you can't
miss the imposing Sky Tower, which at 328 metres
is the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere.
You can also climb to the apex of the Auckland
Harbour Bridge, and the more adventurous can
bungy jump from it.
• Idyllic islands - This is an explorer’s paradise,
where you can island hop within sight of downtown
Auckland; where you can explore open wildlife
sanctuaries, walk on dormant volcanoes, or dine at
world class wineries; where you can sail between
islands, find a secluded beach and soak up nature.
Waiheke, Rangitoto, Great Barrier, Tiritiri Matangi,
Motuihe, Kawau, Te Motutapu, Goat Island and
Rakino are just a few of the many islands within
Auckland’s periphery beckoning you to visit.
• Shopping - Auckland’s stylish heart is the home
of many of New Zealand’s top fashion designers.
Parnell and Newmarket are also well known for their
fashion shopping. There are also several markets
that are a magnet for bargain hunters seeking fresh
food, arts and crafts, clothing and second hand
• On the menu - Auckland will tempt your tastebuds
with locally grown produce, seafood from its abundant
harbours and award-winning wines to match.
Purchase the best of the day’s catch from the
waterfront Auckland Fish Market, talk to growers at a
in some, a washing machine and kitchenette.
A similar emphasis on the creature
an up-and-coming, 79-room minimalist
several months ago. Inspiration for the hotel
Building his eatery around the concept of
“Thai street food with great cocktails”, food
writer/owner Jarrett Wrisley sought to focus
on the details other restaurants weren’t
paying attention to.
“It’s easy to get great Thai food in Bangkok,
but I wanted to focus on the vibe, and
well-crafted drinks, and carefully sourced
ingredients, as much as the cooking,” says
Wrisley. He credits his success to a mix of
“professionalism, attention to detail, hard
work and a little bit of luck”. But “it’s the same
wherever you go,” he adds. “Restaurants will
never work if you don’t obsess over every
little detail. Everyone is a restaurant critic,
WILD IDEAS
Make your way to the southernmost tip of Taiwan, where
you’ll fi nd the playground of the locals – Kenting
WORDS CINDY SUI PHOTOGRAPHY DANIEL M SHIH

ADRENALINE //
Take in stunning views of
the coastline at Guanshan
051

What people love the most about Kenting are the
sea views, which are right outside your hotel or B&B
SSurrounded by the
Taiwan Strait to the
west, Pacifi c Ocean
to the east and Luzon
Strait to the south, this
part of Taiwan off ers
some of the best scenic attractions
— and many would argue the best
holiday spot — on the island. It’s
also Taiwan’s fi rst national park
but is often overlooked because
other sites such as Alishan are
better promoted.
But since 2008, interest in
Kenting has soared, especially
among the Chinese-speaking
communities in Asia, because of
the box offi ce hit Cape No. 7. The
romantic comedy and drama
was largely fi lmed in Kenting as
well as nearby Hengchun town.
Its two love stories — one taking
place during the end of Japan’s
colonial rule in Taiwan and the
other in modern times — both
involve Taiwanese and Japanese
interracial couples.
If you’re a fan of the movie, or
simply a lover of breathtaking
mountain and coastal views,
beaches, sunshine and warm
weather, this is the perfect spot
for a weekend getaway or a longer
holiday. It’s a great place for
nature enthusiasts as it off ers an
amazing array of wildlife, such as
deer, butterfl ies, fi sh and birds,
including migratory ones.
In fact, every year from October
to the following May, a large
number of birds migrate south
from Siberia, mainland China
and Japan to the Lungluan Lake.
They stay for the winter, making
the site a perfect place for a spot of
bird-watching.
And don’t worry, Kenting is not
diffi cult to get to. Since the highspeed
rail came into operation a
few years ago, it takes only about
fi ve hours to reach Kenting from
Taipei international airport.
The closest HSR station is near
Kaohsiung City and from there,
it’s a two-hour bus ride away.
PLACES TO SEE
NANWAN This small fi shing
village has a long beach
that boasts azure water and
soft, clean sand; ideal for
swimming and picnicking.
DAJIANSHAN (‘BIG POINTED
MOUNTAIN’) Rising 318m
above sea level, this is the
most recognisable geological
symbol of Kenting National
Park. It’s near the Caesar
Park hotel, so stop in for a
drink on the upper balcony,
where you can get a good
view of the rock.
LUNGPAN A large area of
grassland that allows you
to see the Pacifi c Ocean and
even Lanyu (‘orchid island’)
on a clear day. It is made
of coral reef cliff, with
limestone caves under the
red topsoil. Visit before dawn
or at dusk to enjoy the most
amazing views.
What people love the most
about Kenting are the sea views,
which are right outside your hotel
or B&B. The various beaches, cliff s
and seaside meadows are easily
accessible on foot, by bus or a
short taxi ride.
The Kenting National Park’s
offi ce has suggested sightseeing
routes, including coastal tours
and forest tours, as well as duckwatching,
star-gazing, coral,
blossoms and butterfl y tours.
Don’t overlook the natural
wonders of the area. The national
park, for example, is dotted with
coral rocks estimated to be about
100,000 years old — indicating
that this area was once part of a
seabed. One of the most amazing
sights is the ‘One Line Sky’, a
narrow path between two huge
coral rocks. If you look up through
the opening, the sky is just a line.
And just because Kenting
isn’t a major city doesn’t mean it
doesn’t off er great food. Seafood
is popular; I’ve had some of the
best seafood in Taiwan here.
The best restaurants are simplelooking
ones with large tanks
full of seafood outside, and tour
groups rushing in at noon. If
you wait until 1pm, they will
have cleared out and you’ll have
the place to yourself. One of the
best restaurants I’ve tried has no
English name but you can fi nd
it at 708, Chuanfanshi Road
(tel: +886 (8) 885 1239).
PLACES TO SEE
MANJOU This sparsely
populated mountain valley
area lush with tropical
plants is the gathering place
for migratory birds. Every
October, many grey-faced
buzzard eagles migrate
south from Siberia and
usually stop here.
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF
MARINE BIOLOGY AND
AQUARIUM This museum
not only features the
ecology of Taiwan’s waters,
but also has an unusual
houseguest — a 13-foot
plus, 1,500-pound juvenile
whale shark nicknamed
‘Ah’. In recent years, Taiwan
has banned the fi shing of
whale sharks — a sign of its
increasing eco awareness.
The museum plans to set
Ah free in the Taiwan Strait,
where it will probably grow
to an unmanageable size.
ummer in Kansai is hot.
Very hot. Mix with that the
rampant humidity which
blankets the region and you’ve got
yourself two months of some of
the most challenging conditions of
the year.
Last year, Japan experienced its
hottest summer on record with
temperatures in some parts of the
country reaching 41ºC. But fear not
— there are plenty of ways to cope
with the heat. For some people in
Japan, summer is the best season,
giving them a chance to relax on
the beach or climb mountains, the
peaks of which are cool instead of
the usual freezing cold.
Last year, Japan
experienced its hottest
summer on record
with temperatures
reaching 41ºC
The arrival of summer is
heralded by the sound of a million
singing semi (cicada), clinging to
trees across the archipelago. For
six weeks in summer, you really
don’t need an alarm clock, as
these urusai (noisy) creatures are
guaranteed to be up at the crack of
dawn. It’s impressive how much
noise just one semi can make. Put
thousands together and the noise
merits earplugs.
To stop you wilting, a few
items are indispensible. First, a
small hand towel for mopping
your brow. You’ll see people
everywhere using these. A higasa
(parasol) is popular among
women to keep the sun off the
skin. You rarely see a man holding
one, though it’s not unknown. For
guys, a wide-brimmed hat is a
good idea. Many people also carry
a sensu (fan).
It’s vital to drink consistently
through the day. One of the great
things about Japan is that on
almost every street corner you’ll
fi nd a vending machine; these are
a lifeline in the heat. However,
the summer drink of choice (not
found in vending machines) for
many people is kakigori (shaved
ice). Pour on a fl avoured syrup of
your choice and let the freezing
concoction slide soothingly down
your parched throat.
The temperatures by the sea are
usually a little easier to bear, and
the beaches of Kansai are packed
at weekends if the weather’s good.
One worth checking out is Suma
beach in Kobe, a lively aff air for all
ages; and the fun usually continues
long after the sun goes down.
Try some tasty unagi (eel). It’s
packed with nutritious, staminaboosting
properties and the
Japanese swear by it during the
summer months. There’s even a
special day — Doyo No Ushi No
Hi — usually in late July, for eating
it. Try unajuu — eel on a bed of
rice topped with a slightly sweet,
soy-based sauce. Any restaurant
serving unagi will also serve icecold
beers, using glasses kept in
the freezer. It’s one of the seasonal
highlights — an ice-cold beer in an
ice-cold glass.
You can avoid the heat
altogether by shopping indoors,
of course. In summer they turn
the thermostat dial down to
refrigerator levels.
The latest addition to Osaka’s
shopping map is Osaka Station
City; opened in May this year,
the enormous complex includes
a huge concourse above the
platforms of Osaka station and a
new tower (North Gate Building)
Each time we jet
off for a vacation,
it’s to experience a
diff erent country’s
culture and attractions; but
being pampered urbanites, many
of us are unwilling to do so at the
expense of creature comforts.
While seasoned travellers are
seeking more exotic destinations
— places that are less explored
and provide authentic cultural
experiences — many are also
moving away from ostentatious
luxury in order to seek wellness
while making a conscious eff ort to
protect the environment.
Recognising this trend, hotels
More and more resorts are
reducing their carbon footprints
in innovative ways, without
compromising guests’
comfort
WORDS AILEEN LAI
and resorts are changing their game
plan with eco-initiatives. We’re blasé
now about not having our hotel
linen changed every day, and do our
bit by taking shorter showers. But
some resorts are pushing the ‘green’
button a notch further in other ways,
such as building with upcycled
materials and recycling water for
cooling purposes.
One such operator is the Ora Ora
Eco-Wellness Resort in Auckland.
Although aesthetics stay important
for a luxurious resort, ‘eco’, ‘green’
and ‘sustainability’ remain the core
leading principles for its business
model. The German owners of the
property were attracted by the solid
substance of natural
building materials in
this unique environment,
which is surrounded by
1 hectares of lush native bush
reserve overlooking New Zealand’s
oldest wooden and stone buildings.
A slew of additional eco-features
were added: a no-chemicals policy;
solar water heating and electricity
generation; water collection,
purifi cation, treatment and re-use
for irrigation; insulation with
natural materials; pure cotton linen
and towels; waste reduction and
recycling; use of fi ltered, waste fi shand-chip
oil to fuel the diesel vehicle.
Heat pumps provide the comfort
of heat and cool when required on
an economic basis. Local, organic
gourmet food is fresh and designed
to suit the personal tastes and
dietary requirements of the guests.
Even the wine, beer, juices, tea and
coff ee are all organic.
Some hotel brands started on
their ‘green’ eff orts back in 2007.
Banyan Tree launched ‘Greening
Communities’ to raise awareness of
climate change by planting 2,000
trees every year until 2016.
Banyan Tree Phuket has planted
12,749 trees since 2007, exceeding
its target of 8,000. In 2010, the
resort also launched an on-site
vermicompost to reduce the amount
of solid waste sent to the landfi ll and
provide fertile topsoil for its on-site
nurseries and gardens.
In Australia, Daintree Eco Lodge
& Spa’s vision is to preserve and
provide education on not only the
local rainforest (at 135 million years,
the world’s oldest) but also the
world’s oldest living culture — the
Australian Aborigines.
The resort also concentrates on
many other environmental aspects,
including the harnessing of the
pristine water from the waterfall
for use in all aspects of the lodge’s
operations and its cycle through the
Bi-O-Cycle Waste treatment plant to
become irrigation water, returned to
the land.
In Cambodia, the Sofi tel
Phnom Penh Phokeethra has
also established its eco-friendly
credentials. The property recycles
80 per cent of its monthly waste to
produce methanol, which is then
used to provide energy for the staff
canteen, the hotel kitchen and one
of the property’s boilers. Didier
Lamoot, the hotel’s general manager,
explains: “You can’t open a hotel in
2011 without signifi cant investment
in green technologies. The world
just doesn’t work that way anymore.
No one can aff ord to have soot all
over their footprints.”
Meanwhile, over in Ho Chi Minh
City, older properties like the iconic
Caravelle Hotel are belying their
venerable status by promoting
cutting-edge green policies. In
December last year, the Caravelle
completed installation of a waste-
TRANG
water treatment facility that recycles
NHA
40 per cent of the property’s water
each month.
SHERATON
Other green policies adopted by
the Caravelle in recent times include RESORTS; &
reducing electricity consumption
by switching to energy-saving
effi ciency chiller to power its
Is an MBA really worth it?
AN INTERVIEW WITH THE DEAN OF AVENTIS SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT, PROFESSOR DAN LEVIN (PHD, WHARTON)
Singapore, having
one of the most
competitive I economies in the
Asia Pacifi c region,
constantly desires an increasing pool
of both domestic and foreign talent.
The announcement to launch the
Arcadia University International M.B.A.
program in Singapore, the hub of South
East Asia, aligns perfectly with Aventis
mission to provide business leaders,
managers and other professionals with
a high-quality Accredited American
M.B.A. program in their quest for
personal development, career
growth and increased managerial
responsibilities.”
Question: Why Arcadia MBA?
The Arcadia Accelerated MBA offers a
potent combination of key ingredients
which we believe will make it a top
draw for working professionals. These
factors includes
● 12 months Accelerated Program
In today’s rapidly evolving global
environment and shortened
economical cycles; time is money.
Most MBAs are structured over a 18 to
24 months period. Arcadia Accelerated
one year MBA, with classes conducted
over weekend blocks while demanding,
allows our students to recoup their
MBA investment quicker than any
other program and more importantly
meets the need of busy professionals
and expatriates seeking to complete
their graduate education in the
shortest time frame.
● Critical Business Network Arcadia
University’s International M.B.A.
offers concentrations in Finance,
Entrepreneurship and Leadership
attracts professionals from across
all sectors. Successfully launched
in August 2010,its inaugural cohort
attracted 29 professionals, more than
half of whom are senior managers and
directors of multinational corporations
such as Apple Inc., Honeywell, IBM,
Panasonic, Hyatt International and
Visa International, which set the
foundation for a potent network of
lifelong business relationship.
● Reasonably priced at S$28,000,
while not compromising on the
Academic quality, international
prestige of an Accredited US MBA
program makes Arcadia MBA a smart
investment choice for professionals.
This fact is well recognized in US with
Arcadia rated as a “Best Buy” by
Barron’s for the 12th straight year.
● Arcadia’s rich industrial heritage
also sets it distinctively apart from
other business schools through its
unwavering commitment towards
delivering practical driven curriculum.
Instead of a traditional 20,000 words
dissertation, Arcadia Global Capstone
project incorporates industry visits,
CEO sessions and business case
reviews to fulfi l its promise of a truly
distinctively global, integrative, and
personal learning experience.
● International perspectives,
Arcadia is ranked #1 in the nation
(US) for study abroad, and Arcadia’s
graduate Business students don’t just
talk about the global marketplace—
they travel to developed and emerging
economies through their International
Business Experiences. Arcadia MBA
faculty are also drawn from US,
Europe and Asia to offer a truly global
perspective for our students.
At Aventis, we offer our students
the best of both worlds, students
considering an MBA are recommended
to enrolled into the ACBSP accredited
Arcadia University MBA which focuses
on teaching quality and graduate
outcome whilst students who are keen
to specialize in professional disciplines
such as Finance, Organizational
Psychology or Marketing are
recommended to read the Baruch
College, City University of New York
specialized Master of Science degree.
Baruch College is America’s Largest
AACSB Accredited Business School.

Woo Yingyan
Taiwan
I fl ew to Taiwan for the fi rst time with
Jetstar three years ago for a holiday
and fell in love with the country
instantly. Recently, I booked a ticket
on Jetstar 3K721 to Taiwan once
again, for a much-needed break.
The Jetstar crew was great right
from the start — the check-in was
effi cient and they made sure I got
onboard the plane on time.
I stayed in the mountains where
few Singaporeans have visited. My
three nights there was a good break,
away from the hustle and bustle of
the city.
At the Wuling Farm, I managed to
catch the last of the cherry blossom
season. I would have loved to catch
the connecting fl ight to Osaka to get
a glimpse of the sakura, but I didn’t
have the luxury of time. Still, the sea
of pink, white and yellow of the plum,
pear and brassica blossoms left me
in awe.
The weather that March was
much colder than in previous years
because of an unusual continental
cold air mass moving into Taiwan. I
was in for a surprise when I arrived
in Hehuanshan. For the fourth time
in 13 years, it snowed in March! The
sight was amazing. I spent two hours
building a snowman; my fi ngers
turned red and numb.
I’m sure I’ll plan another trip to
Taiwan again on Jetstar!
Singapore
I fl ew to Singapore from Phnom
Penh for a weekend and really
enjoyed spending time with my
dear friend whom I stayed with
during my visit. I have not seen
her for the past three years since
her graduation, so we had a lot
of catching up to do. We chatted
through the day and night, and
slept very little; I lost my voice
because of this!
Thanks to Jetstar for operating
this route, I could visit Singapore
and be with my dear friend. I loved
the city, its parks, the view from
the skyscrapers and of course the
cheap and tasty food. But what I
loved the most was being reunited
with my friend.
Maybe it’s time to outsource…your dating life
Navigating today’s complex dating scene can be daunting,
and busy professionals often wonder who to turn to for advice. We sat down with
Anisa Hassan, author and Managing Director of It’s Just Lunch Asia, to discuss
the difficulties of dating for singles on the go. Here’s some of the savvy advice she
gives to her clients.
What typically gets between singles and a
rewarding dating life?
The top three challenges are making the time, knowing where to find like
minded people and protecting personal privacy. The problem is hardly about
getting a date. Rather, connecting with someone interesting whom you’re also
attracted to. We also work with people who have recently moved or who have
ended a long term relationship – these are the people who don’t know where
to start looking. The online scene seems to be the last thing for many of
them because security, authenticity and privacy are never guaranteed.
What really sets IJL apart from other
dating options out there?
Our personal touch has made our service distinct and unique. We
spend time understanding our clients’ preferences and apply our
instincts to find a good match. We listen attentively to our clients’
needs and we provide options and recommendations that we see
fit. We have an open communication with our clients and refine
our search throughout their dating process. Most importantly, we
value our clients’ confidentiality and will do everything to keep
their private lives, private.
DID YOU KNOW?
JETSTAR OPERATES LONG-HAUL
SERVICES FROM SINGAPORE TO
MELBOURNE, AUCKLAND AND
BEIJING* ON THE AIRBUS A330
WHAT’S AN AIRBUS A330,
YOU ASK?
The Airbus A330 is a twin-aisle,
wide-bodied aircraft that can
seat up to 310 passengers. If
you’re travelling within Asia on
SAFETY, SECURITY & COMFORT
CARRY-ON
BAGGAGE
Liquids, aerosols or gels (LAGs)
must be in containers with a
maximum capacity of 100ml
each. Containers must be placed
in a transparent resealable
plastic bag with a maximum
capacity not exceeding one litre.
SAFETY FIRST
Please ask the cabin crew
for an infant seatbelt if your child
is under two years old. Return
the infant seatbelt to our cabin
crew upon disembarkation.
Sleeping on the aircraft fl oor is
not permitted.
Please read the safety instruction
card in your seat pocket, noting
emergency exits and location
of life jackets. Please watch the
Jetstar, you’re sitting on an A320
aircraft. This has a single-aisle
seat confi guration, and takes
up to 180 passengers. The
A330 is almost twice the size
of the A320.
YOU GET MORE WHEN FLYING
JETSTAR’S LONG-HAUL SERVICES
ON THE AIRBUS A330
Jetstar’s long-haul economy
safety demonstration prior to
take-off.
In an emergency, the crew will
give specifi c instructions. They
may speak assertively and will
require your cooperation.
SMOKING
Government regulations
prohibit smoking on all fl ights.
There are smoke detectors
in all toilets and penalties for
regulation breaches.
THE IMPORTANCE OF
BLOOD CIRCULATION
AND MUSCLE RELAXATION
DURING FLIGHTS
Compression stockings can
assist in preventing swelling of
the ankles and feet and they may
improve the blood return to the
body from the lower legs.
seats have a seat pitch of
78cm. This is comparable to the
economy seats on full service
carriers such as Qantas and
Singapore Airlines fl ying the
same type of aircraft — which
means you’re getting equal
comfort, but at a fraction of
the price!
Besides our signature low
fares, passengers can choose to
also enjoy onboard the aircraft:
• Infl ight hot meals and
beverages
*commence 24 November 2011, subject to regulatory approval
During your fl ight, move your
legs and feet three or four
minutes per hour, and move
about.
CABIN
PRESSURE
To “clear” your ears, try
swallowing and/or yawning
When you are fl ying with an
infant, give them a dummy or
feed them during the aircraft’s
descent. Sucking and swallowing
will help the infant equalise the
pressure in their ears
CABIN
HUMIDITY /
DEHYDRATION
Low humidity in the aircraft
cabin can cause drying of the
nose, throat and eyes and
can irritate wearers of contact
lenses. Do:
WELLBEING
• Comfort kits (SG$9) —
complete with blanket, eye
mask, neck pillow and many
other amenities that are yours
to keep
• Infl ight entertainment units
