Welcome Onboard
Hello and welcome onboard your Jet2.com flight. There’s so much exciting news to
share with you this month, but I’ll start with one of the world’s most famous cities –
NYC! Following on from the overwhelming success of our previous New York flights,
I’m pleased to announce the launch of a fantastic-value service to the Big Apple, direct
from Newcastle and Leeds Bradford. Launched especially for all you shopaholics
looking for a bargain this Christmas, return flights will depart on 2 and 9 December,
with prices starting from just £358.98 for flights alone and a three-night break including
accommodation from just £599 per person with Jet2holidays. This is the first direct
service to NYC from Newcastle and a fantastic addition to our schedule. Seats are
limited, so book now to avoid disappointment!
We have been busy with five great new destinations added from Newcastle Airport to
the Algarve, Alicante, Krakow, Prague and Toulouse, which are on sale now.
Our East Midlands customers can take advantage of several new destinations for 2011
– Alicante, Bodrum, Palma and Rhodes, while Leeds Bradford customers can benefit
from new routes to Madeira and Bodrum which are also on sale now – there really is a
destination for everyone.
Plus, there’s still time to fit in a last-minute sunshine break or, if winter sun is more your
thing, why not book your next beach trip now? Whether it’s diving, nightlife or simply
escaping the UK weather, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays have plenty of options, including
flights and packages to Sharm el Sheikh, Hurghada, Lanzarote, Tenerife, Gran
Canaria and Turkey. For some inspiration, check out our new Jet2holidays brochure,
or visit Jet2.com or Jet2holidays.com to explore our great-value deals.
For those looking for a ski adventure in the Alps, Jet2.com offers direct routes to
some of Europe’s leading winter sports destinations, such as Chambéry, Geneva
and Salzburg. What’s more, we’ve recently launched the only scheduled services from
Scotland and Manchester to Salzburg – our new weekly service from Edinburgh is on sale
from £39.99.
So all that remains is for me to wish you a great flight and a fantastic holiday. We look
forward to welcoming you onboard again soon.
Philip Meeson
I’m delighted to report that no writers were harmed during the making of this magazine,
although there were a few thrills and spills along the way. I took a bit of a battering from
the Northern Irish sea (p38), but thanks to my instructor Ricky (with the purple board)
I managed to surf. Well, sort of. Also staring danger in the face and living to tell the tale,
my colleague Matt boldly climbed a large lump of ice in the Alps (p32), and JetAway’s
daring correspondent in Turkey took a big breath and dived deep into the Aegean (p70).
From Popstars to the Corrie bar, Kym Marsh (p22) has had a few thrills and spills, too.
But she’s come through it all with real staying power and it’s great to have her on the
cover. I hope you enjoy the magazine. Happy flying!
AUGUST ONWARDS
When the good people at
it won’t just be the tourists
that come streaming in.
During the museum’s £2m
walls have been taken down
to make this 1830 Georgian
building lighter – but what’s
the point of illumination without
To this end the museum’s
internationally renowned collection
into three immersive new
lets you step into the slippers
Medieval York, a horde
LUNATIC FRINGE
13 AUGUST - 5 SEPTEMBER
If you’re wondering where all the entertainers have gone this summer,
look north. With 2,453 music, comedy, dance and theatre performances
across 259 venues, the Edinburgh Fringe is the UK’s ultimate talent
magnet. Although big names such as Stewart Lee and Dizzee Rascal
(left) will be grabbing the headlines, anyone can win the public’s hearts.
“You can’t get from a nobody to a somebody without the Fringe,” says
comedian Ben Miller of Armstrong & fame. He’s not wrong, and this
year’s glut of Glee-based singalong shows suggests Don’t Stop Believin’
Just For Two
Swap insipid cliches for an inspired declaration of love, says Kate Ross
THE KEY TO
MY HEART
Lovers in Rome have found
a new way of declaring their
affections. On the city’s oldest
bridge, Ponte Milvio,
there’s a lamppost covered
in hundreds of padlocks
engraved with the initials of
couples. Attach your own,
then throw the key into the
Tiber to symbolise your
everlasting love.
Don’t worry, there’s no
need to traipse around the
Eternal City carrying a hefty
padlock – savvy street vendors
are on hand to sell you
one. If you’re pushed for
space on the lamppost, you
can join the sweethearts
with their sights – and their
locks – on the Trevi fountain.
we’re sure the ability to
have its advantages.
In his quest to collect
ZEN SOUND THERAPY
16JetAway

PHOTO GETTY
A U G U S T / S E P T E M B E R
Perfect Harmony
On the island of Ibiza, far away from the hustle and bustle of the clubs, sound therapy is the
latest way of calming those frayed nerves. Lucille Howe tunes in and chills out…
Whether it’s Motown or metal affecting your
mood, there’s no denying there’s a science to sound,
and here in the Buddha Tent at Ibiza Day Retreats
they’re all ears. Wearing white to harness the good
vibes, bright-eyed co-founder Larah Davis tells me of
Dr Masaru Emoto’s experiment in the 1990s. He played
classical music to samples of water and compared them
to ones exposed to heavy rock. When frozen, the former
created beautiful crystallised patterns while the latter
left distorted, formless ones as if Guns N’ Roses had
destroyed the molecules’ delicate equilibrium.
According to Dr Tomatis, the founder of sound
therapy, our ears are connected to many other organs
in our body by nerve paths, and so what we hear may
contribute to the way they operate. He also discovered
that most of the sensory cells in the inner ear are
accumulated in the high-frequency zone, suggesting that
our best response is to sounds above 8,000Hz and not
the low-frequency hum of chatter, traffic and computers,
which cause stress and fatigue.
Positive sounds have been used as a healing tool ever
since the first hammer hit a Tibetan singing bowl and the
Australian didgeridoo resonated across the plains. The
vibrations of these instruments are thought to assist
the listener into a meditative state. “When the heart
rate is relatively steady, and breathing is deep and slow,
stress hormones decrease,” says Dr Mitchell L Gaynor,
author of The Healing Power of Sound. Indeed, a recent
study conducted by the British Academy of Sound
Therapy (BAST) found that 95% of clients suffering
from stress-related disorders felt an increased state
of calm following sound treatment.
Luckily, Larah is not going to experiment on me,
promising only absorbing and tuneful vibrations to open
up my chakras (the seven energy centres of the body).
“Whatever you’re feeling on the inside transmits through
your physical body into the outside world – have you ever
noticed that when you shift your mood, the moods of
others around you shift dramatically too? “ Larah asks,
and I admit that this is true. “The reason is that sound
waves resonate with human beings at a cellular level. For
example, aggressive beats with angry lyrics – which
seem to offer a kind of emotional release – still transmit
that same angry, aggressive vibration, keeping you
on that same frustrated frequency.” Larah also points
out that when you sing, chant or simply express what
you feel in sound, you don’t risk ill-considered words
damaging your relationships (and yourself). I make
a mental note to sing aggressive scales in private the
next time my sister uses the last of the milk.
‘The ancient meanings of the mantras
heal, cleanse and resonate in us’
The space for our sound session is a little bit like the
Eden Project in miniature – a dome with incredible
acoustics that was specially constructed in order to
support work with healing music. Backed into the
mountainside, with pine trees and cloud-free skies
for a canvas, it feels like a sacred, sci-fi place to
express my inner self. In the group there’s a DJ and
a city high flyer, a yoga teacher and some local friends
of Larah’s who’ve come to offer their support.
Leading the workshops is Maureen Ji (maureenji.com),
a beautiful woman in her late thirties who looks a little
like Shania Twain. She originally studied Indian classical
music, still plays the sitar, and later received her diploma
in sound therapy from the International Association of
Sound Therapy (IAST). Maureen starts the session by
asking what brought us here, and I tell her that since
leaving the acting profession I feel like I’ve lost my
connection with my voice. We begin with some stretches
and breathing exercises then move on to some mantras;
GOING SOUND THERAPY ZEN
the repetition and the plump, round sounds from the
sphere give me delicious goose bumps.
Larah’s favourite part of the session is the group
harmonies. “They help me feel clearer, calmer, lighter –
giving me the perfect dose of musical medicine. It’s also
fun shaping vowels,” she explains. “The ancient meanings
of the mantras carry a certain vibration that is much
more than just the sound of the word, so they heal,
cleanse and resonate in us.” Maureen has a series
of instrumental pieces that she listens to depending
on her mood, including water sounds. The key, she
says, to making use of this practice in our daily lives
is conscious breathing and finding different sounds
to help release our tensions.
Maureen moves around my body – placing her hands
to tune in and allow healing energies to translate through
her voice and her sensitivity. “It’s a tuning up that helps
you to come into a state of great present moment
awareness,” explains Larah. “Fears and anxieties are
carried away and, through surrendering into the
experience, your mind goes quiet and you relax.”
The highlights of the session are hearing my name sung
by the whole group – a change from years of hearing it
as the prefix to some kind of telling off – and Maureen’s
sublime performance on the sitar. Played in the ancient
temples in India, it’s said to still the moving pendulum of
the mind and was the divine instrument of the Goddess
of the Arts. Leaving the dome I feel like a goddess myself
and I can still hear the sound of the waves and the wind
in the pine trees long after I’m home.
Jersey’s food and craft market;
Ocean’s head chef Mark Jordan;
the seabass at Bohemia
I’ve touched down in Jersey on a mission. I’m going to
eat my way around this underrated Channel Island and
discover its gourmet side, but first I have hunger pangs to
satisfy. On the advice of a local, I pick up some fish and
chips at Entwhistles (entwhistles.co.uk) in Gorey Village
then head to the beach. Biting through the crunchy batter,
and then the soft, sweet flesh of the fish, I taste the sea in
its subtle saltiness. Savouring the smell of vinegar wafting
up from the chips, I can’t think of a more delicious way to
start the weekend, even if it’s not exactly refined. I sit on
the beach, watch the tail end of the sunset, and anticipate
all the culinary delights ahead.
I’d heard rumours of Jersey’s up-and-coming gourmet
scene but I wasn’t sure I believed the hype. It’s known
for being a quiet little corner of the UK, a nice spot for
families and older people, but not the kind of place you’d
expect top chefs and Michelin judges to be drooling over.
On the contrary, as I dug deeper I found out that Marco
Pierre White is opening three new venues on the island
at the end of the year, local guide Remi Couriard has
recently added gourmet walks to his tailor-made tours,
and the 2010 Good Food Guide included Bohemia, one
of two Michelin-starred restaurants on the island, in the
UK’s top 20 restaurants. I had to find out for myself
what all the fuss was about.
My first stop is Manor Farm in St Peter (genuinejersey.
com/ClassicHerd), the only independent dairy on the
island. Rolling the car windows down to enjoy the breeze,
I smell the farm before I see it, thanks to the pungent aroma
of its contented cows. Jerseys are perfectly adapted to
convert the high levels of betacarotene in the island’s
grass, so their meat is lovely and red, and the milk they
produce has an attractive, creamy-yellow hue. At the farm
shop, I browse its organic range of Classic Herd products
and try a gooey, moreish brie (the Classic Herd Jersey
Nouveau won bronze last year at the British Cheese
Awards). The shop also stocks many of the island’s other
goodies, and I soon spot La Mare Estate’s black butter,
a unique Jersey product that I’ve heard about but never
tried. After buying some cheese, bread and strawberries
for a snack on the beach, I set out to find the source.
Now, most people go to a winery to sample the wine,
and – don’t get me wrong – at La Mare Estate in St Mary
(lamarewineestate.com) I enjoy a fantastic glass over
lunch among the vines, as well as the estate’s sparkling
and still ciders (both delicious and refreshing). But my
curiosity about black butter, which I imagine to be some
sort of blood-congealed dairy product related to black
pudding, gets the better of me, and I ask La Mare’s
Vicki Coutanche to give me a taster.
My sweet tooth is pleasantly surprised to detect fruit
and spices in this preserve, the taste of which reminds me
of Christmas. Black butter is made from cider, apples,
liquorice and spices, traditionally produced at the end of
the apple harvest in October. La Mare Estate makes
thousands of jars of it each year, upping production to
meet the growing demand. “It used to just be slapped on
some toast, but now people are experimenting with it and
using it in savoury dishes as well,” says Coutanche.

Its fans include Jon Hackett, proprietor of Me and the
Farmer (meandthefarmer.co.uk). His black butter sausages
are a big seller, alongside other unusual flavours such as
lavender and rosemary. I meet him at the St Aubin farm
and craft market, which takes place along the sea wall from
St Helier every Saturday morning. “Come up and see me
on the farm tomorrow and I can introduce you to the pigs,”
he says. So I do. His happy porkers range across paddocks
with multimillion-pound views of St Brelade’s Bay, before
being made into 80% pork sausages and herby, handmade
pies. Indeed, his products are so popular he finds it hard to
keep up with demand, so it’s worth getting to the market
early, or visiting his Brooklands Farm stall in St Brelade on
Fridays and Saturdays.
Having sampled Jersey’s produce at the source, I’m
ready to experience a true celebration of its cuisine at the
Michelin-starred Ocean restaurant (theatlantichotel.com).
Here, head chef Mark Jordan lovingly gathers Jersey’s
finest ingredients (including Classic Herd’s award-winning
cheese and beef, and La Mare’s black butter) to create
stunning haute cuisine. His signature dish is roasted beef
fillet with lobster ravioli; the beef succulent and softcentred,
the ravioli perfectly al dente. For a decadent
ending, the nougatine of apple with calvados cream and
Jersey black butter ice cream is a gorgeous combination
of textures and spicy, sweet flavours.
From alfresco fish and chips to inspiring à la carte, I’ve
got stories to dine out on and culinary memories to savour
again and again, long after I jet off from Jersey’s shores.
Pop casualty turned soap queen Kym Marsh
tells Sophy Grimshaw about swapping MTV for
ITV and why she never, ever gives up
‘It’s over
when I say
it’s over’
Kym Marsh laughs with a throaty giggle
when JetAway asks how she’s managed to
survive the wag-eat-wag world of reality
TV on her own terms, with a steady acting career
and happy family life to show for it.
According to the cosmic logic of the celebrity
universe, Marsh – who in her role as barmaid
Michelle Connor is currently at the heart of UK’s
leading soap opera, Coronation Street – shouldn’t still
be famous, let alone on a winning streak. But Marsh,
who first came to the public’s attention when she
won a place in pop group Hear’Say on the 2001
show Popstars, bends all the usual reality TV
paradigms. These people are supposed to divide
neatly into two camps: stratospheric success stories
(Leona Lewis, Cheryl Cole) and the woulda-couldashoulda-beens
who sink without trace, never to
bother our TV screens with their singing, dancing
or plate-spinning ever again.
She might not be a global superbrand, but with
admirable tenacity she has somehow fought the game
and won. “I’ve been in this business for 10 years now,”
she says. “I never give up. I’m a very determined
person. My mum always said to me what doesn’t kill
you makes you stronger.” We’re chatting on Corrie’s
Manchester set, where she waits in the green room
for her next shift behind the bar as Michelle (“An
with extraordinary events.”). Marsh knows how she
feels: “As I child I was badly bullied but I’d never let
anyone bully me now. No way in this world!”
When her post-Hear’Say solo career ended (she was
dropped by Island Records despite a respectable clutch
of solo singles charting at numbers 2, 10 and, erm, 35),
it seemed unlikely she would retain her fame, but
undeterred she dusted herself off and started over.
“It’s easy to just disappear,” she agrees, “but after
Popstars I was lucky enough to get an acting agent,
and that’s how, eventually, I won the role on
Corrie.” In practice, though, it didn’t feel quite so
straightforward: “This business is not glamorous; you
don’t get instantly rich, you don’t have it easy. To
make it, you have to really want to be an entertainer
and be prepared to make sacrifices. You have to work
long hours and weekends; you can’t always pick your
kids up from school. It’s hard work, but I’m not
complaining. I love it.”
As for making pop records: “I don’t have any desire
at all to go back to music,” she confesses. “I love
singing and I love being on stage, but I don’t like
the music industry. I found it a very difficult place to
be. I’ve just signed another contract with Coronation
Street, so I’m going to be here for the foreseeable.”
In many ways it’s the perfect fit for her: “Corrie
is all about strong, feisty women!” she says. “It’s
notorious for its strong women. Michelle is just
the latest in a very long line of them.”
It’s not just pride that has motivated her to fight
for her dream career, but determination to provide for
her family. She has two children, Emily, 12, and David,
15, from a previous relationship, and her life clearly
revolves around them. “Emily comes to watch me
on set sometimes, which is lovely,” she says. “I have
her dropped off here sometimes when filming
overruns, but the Corrie team are really good
about that kind of thing.”
In February 2009 Marsh and her fiancé Jamie
Lomas (Warren from Hollyoaks) had a baby of their
own, Archie, who was born 18 weeks early and
died shortly afterwards. “After the loss of my baby,
a lot of people came forward to tell me they’d
Jet2.com 25

KYM MARSH
‘Corrie is all about
strong, feisty women.
It’s notorious for it’
experienced the same thing,” she says. “Knowing
I had that much public support at such a difficult
time was a real help.” She tried to channel her grief
into making a documentary with broadcaster Sir
Trevor MacDonald about premature births in the
UK. “The parents I met seemed grateful that I was
doing something to help give people a clue as
to what living through this experience is like –
and that we need to do much more to prevent
premature births.”
Suffering the loss of a child isn’t the only thing
she has found the courage to speak up about. She’s
also talked frankly about her former bulimia. “If my
own experiences can help anybody in any way, I’m
fortunate enough to be in the position that I can go
out there and do that. So in that sense, I’ve been
happy to discuss these things.” Her fitness regime
these days is well balanced. “I go to the gym and
I try not to eat rubbish. But sometimes you have
a really early start, don’t finish until 7pm, and need
to go home and cook tea for your kids – by the
time you’ve done that, there’s no time to go to
the gym. But the very fact of being constantly
active must burn calories!”
When she does get time away from the Manchester
set, she hops on the first plane to Cyprus. “My friend
has a hotel there, Le Méridien, in Limassol,” she
explains. “We like escapist holidays, beach holidays.
Because let’s face it, we live in a cold country, even
though this has been a hot summer, and we all need
to get a bit of sunshine.”
The daydream about Cyprus, and our chat, ends
as Marsh is summoned back to the cobbles for her
next scene. “You know, in this industry you can
understand how some people can get ideas above
their station, just because they’re famous or on the
telly,” she muses as she leaves, “but it’s not like that for
me. I’m not saying I’ve had the worst life of anyone
in the world, but it’s been difficult at times. I’ve
learned from every experience and I’m a down-toearth,
normal person. That’s how I like my life.”
Street Theatre
If 30 minutes of small-screen action per
night just doesn’t sate your appetite for
all things Corrie, you should get yourself
over to the Lowry Theatre in Salford
where a new comedy stage show will
see the stars of the Street treading the
boards rather than treading the cobbles.
The play, written by Jonathan Harvey,
a celebrated dramatist and former
Coronation Street scriptwriter,
condenses more than 2,000 storylines
and 7,000 episodes of Britain’s longestrunning
soap into just two hours of
stagecraft. But how did he squish half
a century of serial drama into one play?
“I looked at who’d been on the show
longest and played a part in the important
stories and tried to base the show around
them.” says Harvey. “For me that’s Ken,
Deirdre and Gail. Between them they’ve
been involved in most of the major stories
of the past 50 years. I peppered their
tales with top comedy moments involving
all the best-loved characters too.”
Asked if any current stars of the soap
had been tempted to swap the Street for
the stage, Harvey remains tight-lipped,
saying: “Everyone is excited about the
50th anniversary celebrations so
hopefully they’ll all come and see it.
The main characters are not played by
current or past cast members, but we’re
hoping our narrator will be a Corrie star.”
Whether current cast members take
part or not, with 115 deaths, 37 births,
86 marriages, one lorry crash and one
fire unfolding on stage, Corrie! is sure to
be a memorable experience.
THE CRIBS
Brothers in arms
(from left): Ryan Jarman,
Johnny Marr, Ross and Gary
A U G U S T / S E P T E M B E R
The Cribs
Wakefield’s favourite sons are storming the festival
circuit this summer. Ahead of a huge homecoming show,
singer Ryan Jarman speaks to Damian Jones
Soundtracking Match of the Day, hooking up with Smiths
legend Johnny Marr, having chart-topping celebrity
girlfriends on speed dial – life could be a lot worse
for The Cribs right now.
Along with Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs and The Pigeon
Detectives, the punchy indie rockers are undoubtedly one of
Yorkshire’s greatest success stories. They’ve performed at almost
every Leeds Festival over the past eight years, from their Comedy
Stage debut in 2002 to their Main Stage slot on 27 August with
Arcade Fire and The Libertines.
“We’ve played there a lot,” coughs singer/guitarist Ryan Jarman
as he struggles to fend off a nasty cold. “It’s the festival we’ve
done the most down the years and I’m really glad about that
because I used to go there when I was a kid. I’m really looking
forward to it this year because we’re playing alongside The
Libertines again.” Born out of a love of American indie records
back in 2001, The Cribs (Jarman, his twin brother Gary on
bass and baby brother Ross on drums) painstakingly built up
a fanatical fanbase during the early part of their career, releasing
two critically acclaimed albums, the second of which (The New
Fellas) saw the band hook up with A Girl Like You star Edwyn
Collins. Two years later, in the spring of 2007, the Wakefield trio
finally gatecrashed the charts with their landmark LP Men’s Needs,
Women’s Needs, Whatever thanks largely to Franz Ferdinand
frontman Alex Kapranos. With his fingers on the faders, the Scottish
singer helped polish the group’s lo-fi sound with a pop sheen
that the Jarmans continue to hone today. “Alex has a really good
ear for pop music,” says Jarman. “That made it interesting, and
I definitely think the album we made with him was more of
a pop record. I don’t regret that or the success that came with
it because we had built up a good cult following by then.”
Their first real taste of the big time came after a rocky period
for Ryan, who became something of “a man with a death wish”
after spending months on the road. It all came to a head at the
NME Awards in February 2006 when he somersaulted onto the
Kaiser Chiefs’ table after they jokingly handed Franz Ferdinand’s
award for Best Live Band to the Jarmans. The stunt resulted in
Ryan spending four hours in hospital after he lacerated his
back on a shard of broken glass. He later returned to the
awards before being readmitted to A&E when he was
found bleeding heavily backstage.
I’m about.’ I was in a really dark place and every day
I wear an enormous scar on my back which reminds
me to look after myself a bit better these days.”
Lacerated backs aside, the last four years have been
somewhat kinder to Ryan and his brothers thanks to
two chance meetings. In 2007 Ryan met his current
girlfriend Kate Nash, and at the turn of that year the
band struck up a close friendship with ex-Smiths
guitar legend Johnny Marr after Gary stumbled across
him at a barbecue in Portland, Oregon. Both
relationships have had their share of pitfalls.
When Nash’s debut album Made of Bricks shot
straight to top of the charts in the summer of 2007,
Jarman and his flame-haired partner quickly found
themselves thrust into the media spotlight. “In the
early days it was very difficult being in the public
eye and I found myself becoming quite reclusive,”
he recalls. “We didn’t want that kind of attention
because I found it really superficial and crass. Having
said that, it’s great being with Kate because we both
do the same job and we both know what it’s like
spending a life in hotel rooms or sat in an airport.
It’s not all glamour.”
A U G U S T / S E P T E M B E R
‘Johnny Marr’s a mate. The fact
that he happens to be one of the
best guitarists ever is a bonus’
The band’s relationship with Marr has also proven
to be a double-edged sword despite the fact that his
services have seen The Cribs score their most
successful album to date with Ignore the Ignorant.
“When we first brought the record out it was
frustrating having to talk about Johnny in every single
interview because everybody kept asking, ‘Why is he
in the band?’” says Jarman. “I don’t know why it’s
such a big deal. He’s a mate and the fact that he
happens to be one of the best guitarists ever is just
a bonus, a massive bonus. But it’s not like we went
out hunting for one of our heroes, it was a natural
thing. I only realised halfway through the record that
we were going to have to talk about it in interviews.”
A trademark Marr riff helped spawn The Cribs’
poppiest single to date in We Share the Same Skies,
which has taken on a life of its own ever since Match
of the Day used a snippet of the song to soundtrack
the programme highlights. Amazingly, Jarman appears
to be indifferent about the whole thing. But then that
could have something to do with the fact that he’s
not a footie fan.
“If it works, then cool,” he shrugs. “It’s good to get
into the mainstream in little ways, but I’m always
surprised when people mention it because I’ve got
no interest in football at all.”
With the Leeds Festival just around the corner,
Jarman turns his attention back to his band’s
impending Main Stage slot. “It’s going to be great,
I’m sure,” he says. “It has a real rock tradition, plus it’s
Peak
PERFORMANCE
Scaling Chamonix’s Mer de Glace at the height of
summer, Matt Glasby tries to keep his cool
Don’t, whatever you do, look down is the
conventional wisdom, a mountaineering
mantra to perpetuate the illusion of
safety where there is none. Unfortunately, this
only applies if you’re going up, along, around,
about – any direction, in fact, but down an
ancient, 100m-high ladder suspended over
a vast, icy valley. On the horizon the pandacoloured
peaks of Aiguille du Dru (3,754m and
3,733m) watch over us disapprovingly. On the
rungs above, a nervous first-timer threatens to
lose his footing, or his breakfast. I look down.
Below, the ladder drops off into frosty
oblivion, and the Mer de Glace (“sea of ice”),
France’s most formidable glacier at 7km long
and 200m deep, lurches vertiginously in and
out of focus. We’re tied on, of course, each man
and woman lashed to the last (Frédérique, our
guide), but the Alps have long and worryingly
fruitful form when it comes to proving that the
illusion of safety is often just that.
Since it was first colonised by Benedictine
monks in the 11th century, the story of Chamonix
and the surrounding region is a story of dangerous
things made, apparently, safe. Back then, the
Alps were referred to as “les monts maudits”

As the floor falls
away I just want to
cling to the wall
(“the damned mountains”), a lethal wasteland
of landslides and avalanches where evil spirits
surely dwelled. In the 18th century, gentlemen
adventurers such as Richard Pococke (who
discovered the Mer de Glace in 1741) put paid to
such claptrap with a hardy spirit and a stiff upper
lip, and by the time Michel-Gabriel Paccard and
Jacques Balmat conquered the mighty Mont Blanc
(4,810m) in 1786, the Alps were fair game for any
toff with a death wish and special shoes.
Things didn’t always go to plan, however.
Behind the pretty Protestant church in the town
centre, sedate but far from asleep during these
summer months, is a graveyard for climbers who
paid the ultimate price for their lift passes – the
Englishmen who went up a hill, but didn’t quite
manage to come down a mountain. One chap
called Henry Arkwright fell into a crevasse and was
found an astonishing 30 years later – plenty of time,
you’d think, for a quick prayer to St Gerard, the
patron saint of guides. As it turns out, Gerard
himself is commemorated with a plaque on the
Maison de Guides building (founded after an
accident in 1821 – in a former Benedictine crypt).
Sadly, Gerard bit the big one in the Himalayas.
I don’t know about you, but I’d have thought one
of the major qualifications for mountain-based
sainthood would be not dying on a mountain.
Either way, it’s not particularly reassuring.
Back at the Mer de Glace, we’ve reached the
valley floor after an arduous descent. It’s rocky and
uneven underfoot, and though the glacier sprawls
serenely up towards the horizon, beneath us it’s
slumping downhill unseen at 1cm per hour (that’s
100m per year) like a massive Slush Puppie melting
on a stairwell. Apparently, 20,000 years ago it
reached as far as Geneva (about 90km), Frédérique
informs us, but it advances and retreats with each
new ice age, plus global warming doesn’t exactly
help the matter. In the 18th century, when the
likes of Lord Byron and Shelley (who set part of
Frankenstein at this very spot) visited, the glacier
was high enough not to require any ladders at all,
the lucky so-and-sos.
ICE CLIMBING
As we put on our crampons and begin to climb
the glacier, the evidence of this clandestine churn
is everywhere. Around us, the terrain is punctured
with deep fissures burrowing down to God knows
where, and the ground is jewelled with debris –
shards of broken glass (probably Byron’s) and those
old-fashioned ring pulls they banned in the 1990s
for being too dangerous. It’s no wonder poor old
Henry Arkwright took so long to surface. Just in
case, we’re equipped with ice axes – a supremely
cool-looking piece of kit, but one you must hold
a certain way so you don’t do yourself a mischief.
You have to wonder at the sanity of a sport where
even the safety equipment is potentially fatal.
Similarly, so we don’t catch the crampon spikes in
our clothing and fall, Frédérique advises us to walk
“like Charlie Chaplin”. With a harness riding right
up my crevasse, this will not be a problem.
After a 30-minute waddle across the Mer
de Glace’s frozen moonscapes, we reach our
destination: a 10m-tall wall of shimmering
white. OK, so it’s not exactly Mont Blanc, which
Frédérique will be scaling tomorrow, but it’s still
imposingly sheer. After Frédérique hammers in
the safety rope and loops it through my harness,
I stride up to the base and swing my axe, mischief
end first, hard into the wall, beginning the strange,
stop-start process of leverage and release that
constitutes ice climbing. It’s dizzying, exhausting
and completely counter-intuitive.
As the floor falls away, I want to cling to the
wall, but the only way to advance is by pushing
myself outwards, using the crampons and axes to
chisel temporary hand and toe holds then moving
awkwardly on. By the halfway point my trousers
are completely wrecked (from the crampons), but
by determination rather than judgement I reach the
final overhang and bundle myself past in a blur of
axe blades and adrenalised enthusiasm. It’s not
pretty, but I can irrefutably say that I fought the
wall and – for once – the wall didn’t win.
The abseil down is equally tricksy – believe me,
the last thing I want to do is stand on the edge of
this just-conquered abyss and lean backwards – but
it’s over quickly, and as the rest of the group follow
suit with similar degrees of success (and sartorial
damage), it occurs to me that it’s danger that’s
really the illusion here; that people like Frédérique
(and Pococke and Paccard and Balmat) have
conquered les monts maudits for us once and for
all. As if to illustrate my point, a delicate white
butterfly takes off impossibly from the ice with
ethereal grace. Then the stillness is shattered by
the distant thunder crack of a tumbling boulder,
and I remember just how dangerous the illusion
of safety can be.
I’m standing up. It’s really happening. OK, so
I’m more horizontal than I am vertical, but
I have two feet on the deck and my bum is off
I’m surfing. But then – splash! – I’m down and out.
Water shoots up my nose and my knees bounce off
the seabed. The board flips over my head and its
leash tugs at my ankle. A jellyfish hovers right in
front of my eyes. I feel I should apologise to it for
causing such a disturbance.
I stand up, fully vertically this time. I recover the
“You were standing,” yells Ricky Martin, who runs
your body on the centre of the board so you’re
I’m nervous and at first I struggle. I fling myself
onto the board and the waves crash into me, hurling
me off. But with Ricky’s encouragement, my
timing improves. The waves are getting friendlier,
gracefully carrying me on their backs rather than
just knocking me sideways. I’m enjoying myself.
The next day I return to the water to take things
to the next level. But it’s tougher out there. The
waves are coming so thick and fast I feel like
a boxer taking a pummelling. Walking against the
tide after each attempt is exhausting and my upper
body strength, which I need to propel myself onto
the board, is rapidly declining. I need longer to
recover between each effort. I stare at the famous
Barry’s Amusements on the coastal road and
wonder why there’s a giant red apple next to the
Big Dipper. My thoughts turn to my cosy hotel
After two hours in the water, we return to dry
land and Ricky treats everybody in the group to
an ice cream, exactly what our sea salt-splashed
mouths are crying out for. I’m shattered but
determined to get back in the water as soon
as I’ve got my strength back. One day, I tell
Ricky, I’m going to be able to stand up on that
board. And I’ll stay up. I’m going to tame those
waves. And I’ll do it right here in Portrush.
BUDAPEST DESIGN
Budapest has come a very long way since
Hungarian independence. Cutting-edge
architecture is reshaping its skylines, local
DJs are busting out new basslines, and a world of
exotic cuisine is hitting its waistlines. But when it
comes to fashion and design, the Hungarian capital,
until recently, has lagged behind. The opening of
WAMP, a monthly designer market, has changed
everything. Now the city’s creatives are buzzing.
“There are very talented designers here in
Budapest – what’s lacking is a regular outlet for
their creations. Thank goodness for WAMP!”
says Balazs Antal, who was recently chosen as
Hungarian designer of the month for his radical
take on dinner sets (he makes handle-less cups and
jugs). Antal spent five years working at Herend,
a Hungarian porcelain manufacturer, before taking
the independent route. It’s a huge risk compared
to a regular job. But WAMP is giving him and
many other Hungarian designers a chance to
show off their skills.
WAMP was set up in 2006 by a small group of
designers in co-operation with Reka Matheidesz,
whose background is in international relations and
project management. “The main idea was to bring
design to the Hungarian public,” she says. “We
for designers to network and exchange ideas; to
give them a shop window. We started with just
30 designers. Now there are 500 on our books.
Every month, 100 display their goods.”
Right now, WAMP is moving up a gear. Hot on
the heels of its well-received participation in New
York Design Week, WAMP is setting out its stalls
every two weeks during the summer. It will also
occupy a corner of Hajogyari-sziget, the island
that plays host to the region’s biggest music and
arts festival, Sziget, every August. Amid scores
‘We used to use leftover material for
our bags. Now we buy it specially’
Specials, Hungary’s top designers will be displaying
their clothes, jewellery and homeware.
It’s taken four years for the WAMP team to bring
design into the spotlight – or at least a little nearer
the mainstream. “The most important thing is that
WAMP was started by designers and not just
business people,” says Katalin Imre, top clothes
designer with Artista, Budapest’s most famous
creator of cutting-edge togs. “They know what
designers want, how they operate. It will always
have that connection.”
Artista originally began as a co-operative in
a hidden courtyard off Vaci utca, the city’s main
shopping street. “When we started we were radical
and underground,” explains Imre. “Now we’ve
learned to be a little more commercial, finer and
smoother.” As the Hungarian market is limited,
Artista has managed to branch out, with three
outlets in Austria and 11 in Greece.
Artista is both a studio and a fashion outlet. Imre
employs a team of 12 people, sewing and cutting
out back while customers try out the designs in
tall mirrors. Her clothes are made from lavish
fabrics and they’re not cheap – locals queue early
for the half-price sales twice a year. At WAMP,
Artista mainly sells its trademark bags, which
are edgy and different – they even make bag
covers for clipping over the top. “We used to
One of Budapest’s most leftfield and dynamic
design de shops is Printa, whose co-owner Zita Majoros
left lef her native Serbia to study art and design in
Hungary Hu a few years ago. Printa has the tallceilinged,
MMajoros’s
customised street patterns from the immediate
vicinity, and copies of manhole covers from
across the city – but there are also clothes,
je jewellery and curios by up to 100 artists. “At first,
loc locals baulk at the 6,000-forint (£17.50) price tag for
on one of my T-shirts,” says Majoros. “Then I explain
tha that the textiles are bought here, and everything is
sew sewn here on the premises. Nothing is done in
Ch China on the cheap. We support the local economy.
In
this way, the people who are commissioned for
quarter and a major nightlife hub. “The way of
producing things is becoming easier. Sourcing the
material is harder here, particularly as I’m always
trying to use eco-friendly materials, but to produce
goods is better and cheaper here. While design is
becoming more and more globalised, I feel that it’s
important that what we do is very specific to
Budapest, typographically and creatively.”
A quick look around Printa reveals the jewellery
of 1mind1, recycled from inner tubes and bike
tyres; the Budapest-influenced urban accessories
of Balkan Tango; the delicate decorative items of
Recycle Me; and bags made from rice holdalls
found in Chinese markets around town,
redeveloped by the Kukuri Crew.
“In the past, Hungarian design used to be strictly
traditional,” says Imre. “Then newcomers like us
came along, made a connection with industry and
changed things around. Hungarian design was
good and will always be good. We just need the
right market.” They might just have found it.
The smallest team ever to reach the Premier League could cause a huge upset, says Neil Squires
There have never been hotter favourites
than Blackpool. In fact, you could probably
pick up better odds on extracting an extra slice of
black pudding from one of the town’s famously
One look at Bloomfield Road, standing partially
and it’s easy to see why. The three permanent
stands and a temporary fourth known as the Gene
Kelly stand (because it leaves supporters singing in
the rain) don’t quite compare to Old Trafford.
If the club’s stadium appears out of place in the
Premier League, then so, too, does the unheralded
team that arrived at the summit of the English
game via the play-offs at the end of last season.
In a league littered with World Cup prima donnas,
they resemble ragamuffin kids with their noses
pressed against the sweet shop window.
Yet for one season at least, they will rub
a sporting romance for the 21st century.
“We’re like the poor man moving into Rich
Street. We may not have the right shoes or the best
gear, but what matters is the man inside, not how
he looks,” says Ian Holloway, Blackpool’s extremely
voluble manager.
“We know that we haven’t got the best facilities
– we do our own washing and I haven’t had
a washing machine that works since I got here –
but these lads deserve to be in the Premier League
because they are top-class human beings. And
just because we’re in the Premier League now...
this journey ain’t over yet.”
With his West Country street wisdom and
roguish charm, Holloway’s dugout wit could
be invaluable in a season in which the Premier
League’s “goals against” record may be under
threat. He knows his side will be leaky, but his
sense is that Blackpool’s attacking 4-3-3 formation
will stress unsuspecting Premier League defences.
He can’t wait for all the “pier pressure” and “tower
power” headlines if his hunch is right.
is unbelievable’Gary Taylor-Fletcher, midfielder
Above: Jason Euell and Charlie
Adam prepare to show the Premier
League what they’re made of.
Right: Blackpool’s iconic tower
“It’s an honour to represent this town in the
Premier League, so let’s bring it on, let’s see how
they handle what we throw at them,” says
Holloway. “We’re going to attack the Premier
League. We’ll try to score goals and play
entertaining football. I think we’re like a good
boxer. We show them our chin then we want
to see how strong theirs is.”
The responsibility for scoring the goals will fall
upon the likes of Gary Taylor-Fletcher, who stuck
against Cardiff at Wembley in the epic play-off.
He’s a big name, but only in terms of the letters
on his shirt. “Ten years ago I was playing in the
Conference, going to college to study PE and
business studies, and working part-time in a bar.
The turnaround for me to reach the Premier
League is unbelievable,” says Taylor-Fletcher, who
ended up at Northwich Victoria at one point after
being released by Liverpool as a 14 year old.
At the other end will be Matthew Gilks, once
of Rochdale, who will have the dubious pleasure
of dealing with some of the world’s top strikers
inside some of the most intimidating grounds in
football. “Playing against the likes of Fernando
Torres and Wayne Rooney will be incredible from
my point of view. It’s almost a privilege for me to
be on the same pitch as those players,” he says.
“But you have to remember that it’s just 11 men
BLACKPOOL FOOTBALL
versus 11 men and take it back to that. If you think
about any more than that you’ll freeze. That’s the
last thing we want to happen – it’s about having no
fear and enjoying it.”
Promotion has unleashed a wave of enthusiasm
for the club not seen since Stanley Matthews and
Stan Mortensen were doing their baggy-shorted
business and winning the FA Cup in 1953. On their
homecoming parade after Wembley this year, the
promenade turned tangerine in honour of the
unlikely heroes who had ripped up football’s rules
of financial logic. Their entire wage bill was less
than John Terry’s salary.
A club with an average gate of just over 8,000
had proved that in a game so often driven by
greed, money was not everything after all, and for
that enormous credit has to go to the unconventional
figure in charge. Blessed with the gift of the gab,
Holloway can also communicate in sign language
as three of his four children were born deaf due
to a rare gene disorder. Brought up on a Bristol
council estate, the man his players call Olly
Mourinho worked his way around the lower
leagues as a modest midfielder before discovering
his true vocation as an empathetic manager. But
having built a reputation on slim resources at
Plymouth, Holloway moved north 16 months ago
as damaged goods after failing at Leicester.
“I had a year out of football and I had to think
about what went wrong in my life. Loyalty is
something I lost when I left Plymouth and I wanted
to get back to that. I felt this was a wonderful fit for
me in that respect. Thankfully, I’ve been proved
right,” he says. “I believed there was a soul at the
place that suited me. I just had to take what was
already on the shelves here, add a few ingredients to
the cake mix and it came out as something special.”
The achievement of winning promotion was
recognised by Blackpool Council who, knowing a
good earner when they saw one, awarded the club
a Civic Medal for their efforts. With the league’s
televisual reach, promotion will be worth millions
to the resort. As well as the away fans pouring in
from around the country to take in the sea air, the
distinctive pleasures of northwest B&B culture could
be about to be unleashed on visitors from much
further afield seduced by the Blackpool story and
wanting to share in their Premier League dream.
MAMAIA

Eat The World
(Without Leaving Tel Aviv)
Tel Aviv has a reputation as a hang-out for
hedonists, a Mediterranean beach destination
that revels in its classy, Miami-style nightlife.
But it’s more than that – a young city, built by people
who arrived from all over the world to make a new
life, bringing with them the cultures, habits and
cuisines of the places they left behind. Few cities
showcase their history with food quite so powerfully.
To really understand Tel Aviv you need to eat.
USA: Benedict
Looking and feeling just like your favourite New York
diner, Benedict wafts the aromas of croissants, toast and
eggs over Tel Aviv’s buzziest downtown corner, serving
100 breakfast combinations 24 hours a day. Sample
their signature dish of eggs benedict, try US-style
pancakes or steak and eggs, dig into an Israeli breakfast
of three eggs done any way you like alongside cheese,
salad and freshly squeezed juice – or maybe tackle
Israel’s finest full English, complete with bacon
and sausage. Sassy, irreverent and fast-moving, it’s
Tel Aviv on a plate.
Jump east a few thousand miles – and back about
130 years. Tel Aviv’s historic quarter of Neve Tzedek
predates the founding of the city, established in the
1880s. Among the bohemian cafes and arty boutiques
of narrow Shabazi Street, Suzana keeps alive the
culinary traditions of the once-strong Iraqi Jewish
community. Relax on the shaded terrace of this
Romania: Mamaia
You’d struggle to find a single Romanian restaurant
in most big cities, but in Tel Aviv you can take
your pick. Bucharest was one of the most vibrant
centres of European Jewish culture, cut short by
World War II, but when I ask Mamaia’s owner (“Just
call me Yossi,” he smiles) for his story, he’ll only say
that he’s been in Tel Aviv “many years”. The cuisine is
hearty: start with carp caviar or pickled herring with
vodka before sampling chorba (meat soup), veal
Egypt: Julie
Lose yourself in the Carmel Market, a food and
spice bazaar which fills a maze of crumbling alleyways
in the Yemenite Quarter, and you’ll happen upon
this simple diner, where Julie Ozon has been serving
her own brand of Jewish/Egyptian home cooking
for more than 50 years. “First I was in Neve Tzedek,”
she says, “but then I moved to Carmel Market, and
all my customers moved here with me!” As the
market roars outside and Yemeni/Jewish singer
Zohar croons through crackly speakers, Julie fills
my plate with sofrito (a chicken and potato stew
flavoured with a distinctive Egyptian spice mixture
called baharat), kharshouf mahshi (stuffed artichokes),
teen mahshi (delicious aromatic stuffed figs) and much
more. Frankly, it’s Cairo’s loss.
Greece: Saloniki
After World War I, lots of Greeks arrived to help
build the port, many settling in the busy Florentin
district. Florentin remains vibrant – and the Greek
influence lives on at this legendary patisserie. Miriam
Benbenishti and her mum Malka are juggling orders
from a crowd keen to grab the day’s fresh-baked pies,
breads and pastries. “The family’s been here 52 years,”
Miriam grins, pushing a mini-quiche of sweet potato,
mushroom and courgette into my hand. “My
grandfather started the place. We’ve got regular
customers whose parents used to be regulars too.”
My quiche, and the emptied shelves, tell me why.
Turkey: Niso
Round the corner, Niso Navaro, originally from the
Turkish port city of Izmir, is gazing at the bustling
pavements outside his restaurant. I ask about his
Spanish-sounding name. He blames it on 1492, the
year Spanish Jews were thrown out of their home
country and sought refuge at the other end of the
Mediterranean. Now Niso wants to offer “a taste
of my home – food made with love and patience”.
I take in the Turkish mezze dishes and salads laid
out on the counter, everything from stuffed vineleaves
to bite-sized spinach pastries, and watch
hungry customers digging into lunchtime kebabs.
Lithuania & Ukraine: Batia
Jewish cooking is most often associated with the
Eastern European traditions of the Ashkenazim
– people originating from the once-vibrant Jewish
heartlands of Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine. Batia
sticks tight to those roots, drawing in an intriguing
mix of silver-haired old timers and twentysomething
trendies to lose themselves in its delicious renditions
of Jewish classics such as chicken soup, gefilte fish
(chopped carp) and calves’ foot jelly alongside
gut-busting mains such as goulash and cholent,
a slow-cooked stew of meat and dumplings that’s
guaranteed to ward off the Polish winter...
Palestine: Abu Hassan
Although the Arab city of Jaffa has been emasculated,
absorbed into greater Tel Aviv and gentrified with art
galleries, it’s still possible to pick up on its Palestinian
identity away from the tourist trails. Towards the
residential quarter of Ajami you’ll find what is often
claimed to be the purveyor of the finest hummus in
the land. You don’t go to Abu Hassan for comfort,
sophistication or service. You go for the original
house blend of this famous chickpea dip – smooth,
complex and deeply delicious.
Near the Ottoman clock tower in the heart of Jaffa,
Bino Gabso – “Dr Shakshuka” himself – watches the
world from the dark and eccentric interior of his
restaurant. As he tells the story of how his father came
here from Libya in 1949 and began serving the only
food he knew, waiters scurry past, laden with orders
of the house special, shakshuka – a North African
blend of tomatoes and peppers spiced with paprika,
cooked in a pan and topped with runny-yolked
poached eggs. Other staples are available, of course,
from familiar couscous to the rather less familiar
masran (stuffed sheep’s intestines), and the distinctive
food and atmospheric surroundings ensure the good
doctor remains busy all day.
Iran: Salimi
Back in Florentin, I’m watching Salimi, a little
one-room restaurant that’s one of Israel’s few outlets
serving authentic Persian cuisine, fill up. My waitress
Miri Levi, originally from a village in southern Iran
but 30 years in Tel Aviv, chats and lets me sample
some khoresht aloo, a fragrant tomato-based stew
flavoured with dried plums and apricots; ghormeh
sabzi (beef with beans and dried lemons), gondi
(chicken meatballs with hummus) and more. It’s not
sophisticated cooking but that delicious – and
distinctly Persian – savoury-sweet balance sends me
reeling. It’s a culture shock for the taste buds.
Central Asia: Samarkand
This big, echoing restaurant stands on the not
particularly romantic main street just south of central
Tel Aviv, but taps into the culinary styles of yet
another part of the world with a strong Jewish
heritage: the Silk Road cities of Bukhara and
Samarkand in modern-day Uzbekistan. Evoking
the old country with kitschy murals, unsmiling
service and, fortunately, great food, it specialises
in Uzbek dishes such as dushpera, a soup made
from ground lamb, cherries and chickpeas, mantu,
steamed dumplings stuffed with meat, and oshpelo,
pilau rice with carrots and raisins.
Seafood: Mul Yam
Tel Aviv’s old port has now been redeveloped as
From cheese to chocolate and gnomes to knives, Matt Glasby takes a tour around Europe’s most unusual museums
DalÍ Theatre-Museum,
Figueres, Spain
Housed in what purports to be a derelict theatre,
but actually resembles a gingerbread castle being
Just 90 minutes drive up the coast from Barcelona
in Dalí’s hometown, the Theatre-Museum
displays 1,500 of his works. Although the 22 rooms
are numbered in the traditional manner, visitors
are invited to explore them at random – it’s what
Dalí would have wanted, the big loon.
“It’s a little bit magic,” decides one little girl in the
truth is somewhere in between. Just across the Devon/
Cornwall border, a short daytrip from Newquay, this
wild flower-spotted haven boasts more than 1,000
little beardy blokes benignly peering out from the
bushes. Watch them being crafted by hand, have
a cream tea, then stroll the woods with a (free) gnome
hat and rod so you don’t look, well, odd. The place
weaves such a spell the Daily Telegraph called for a
Turner Prize nomination. This may have been a joke.
Besides celebrity donations from the likes of Mother
selection of miniature footwear (which should be,
but isn’t, called Little Boots), enough shoe-making
equipment to put the elves out of business, plus
touring exhibitions such as Shoes in the Movies,
Dangerous Liaisons, The Adventures of Priscilla Queen
“Paris has another Paris under herself,” wrote
Victor Hugo, “a Paris of sewers – its streets, its
Explore for yourself at the Musée des Egouts,
a musty must-see for those keen on sniffing out
something different. As recently as the 1970s
strong-stomached tourists took boat trips through
these pipes hauled by sewage workers – surely
the worst job ever created? Nowadays, visitors
walk on grilles over genuine waste channels
for a brief history of slime, complete with
“One of the world’s leading authorities!” goes the
unnecessarily self-deprecating blurb to Southport’s
strangest tourist draw (just 40km to the west of
Manchester), but frankly you’ll struggle to find
devoted to mower racing and mowers of the rich and d
Although museums dedicated to abstract concepts
array of exhibits (prayer books, aprons, bed linen)
marked with ghostly (and often burnt) fingerprints,
it purports to show evidence of the recently
deceased contacting the living to make them
pray for their lost souls, and it’s enough to make
even the most cynical of visitors a convert – or
For a bone-chilling afternoon in brooding Prague,
visit this ghoulish collection of devices used to
crush heads, pierce flesh and do various upsetting
things to bottoms. Situated at Krizovnicke nam
1/194, it features an eye-watering selection of
implements, including the iron maiden (like a
coffin, with spikes), the interrogation seat (like
a seat, with spikes) and the “Virgin of Nuremberg”
(like an iron maiden, with even more spikes). This
is the sort of sticky end medieval folk could look
forward to if they were a) witches, b) traitors, or
c) Christians. Great days.
BEYOND BARCELONA
A
fantastic melting pot of cultures combining history with
quirky modernism, Catalonia is a nation within a nation
that boasts its own language and parliament. Sandwiched
between the sandy coast and the hinterland’s spectacular
mountains you’ll find splashes of surreal architecture, funky
sculptural art and palate-warping molecular gastronomy cheek
by jowl with Roman remains and charming medieval towns.
So wave adios to Barcelona and hola to the following…
Reus
Situated in the south, Catalonia’s second city is the birthplace
of surrealist maestro Antoni Gaudí and a great introduction to
Spain’s most vibrant region. The slick, modern form of the Gaudí
Centre in the old town is the perfect starting place, with three
floors of touchy-feely interactive (and occasionally eye-popping)
66JetAway
So much for the city… Andrew Catchpole
goes in search of the real Catalonia
architectural forms crowned by Michelin-starred chef Diego
Campos’s top-floor restaurant serving modern Catalan cuisine.
By a quirk of fate, Gaudí never actually built anything here, but
there’s a modernist route through town, which passes buildings by
Lluís Domènech i Montaner and co while never straying far from
the town’s shady tapas bars and their lazy siren call. Each has its
own house speciality so the trick is to check what the locals are
grazing on, order (or point) to the same, wash it down with some
local vino, then move on. Shopaholics should be in heaven too,
as Reus has a wealth of modern stores and one-off shops selling
everything from cool Catalan clothing to luscious local produce.
Cambrils De Mer
After Reus, the only difficulty is deciding which way to turn.
coastal resort is nearby Cambrils de Mer, which has family
friendly fun by day and some decent nightlife when the sun goes
down. Arrive early on a Wednesday for the weekly market,
awaken your senses Spanish style with a hot chocolate and
doughnut-like churros, stock up on chorizo, local cheese, olives,
anchovies, fresh bread and much else besides, then amble past
the fishermen in the harbour to a nearby beach for the day.
In the evening, settle in for some fresh, grilled seafood at one
of the restaurants that line the waterfront, then hit the bars.
Tarragona
For culture vultures and city lovers, the somewhat overlooked
(and less crowded) Tarragona is Catalan to the core. The buzz
is around the hip bars and restaurants lining Rambla Nova,
which are at their liveliest towards midnight as young families
A U G U S T / S E P T E M B E R
and party people observe Spain’s notoriously nocturnal
carousing hours. Most visitors come here for the impressive
Roman remains seemingly scattered all over town, including
the forum just off Rambla Nova and the amphitheatre down
towards the shore, but the twisting lanes of Tarragona’s
medieval heart, spectacularly situated on the hill around the
cathedral, repay a day’s ambling about dipping in to various
historical and archaeological museums.
Sitges
For a taste of what makes liberal modern Catalonia tick, try
Sitges, dubbed Barcelona-by-Sea, a town that brings to mind
Brighton but with sand (and a lot more sun). It’s an attractive
enough place, but the real point is to see and be seen, as
wealthy Barcelona weekenders mingle with young hipsters,
Priorat
Away from the hot, sometimes hectic pace of
the coast, a more traditional Catalan lifestyle still
exists in the vertiginous wine-growing region
of Priorat. Here, hearty lamb and game replaces
seafood because the craggy granite hills are only
good for nimble-footed sheep, olive trees and
sturdy vines. Well worth a visit is Scala Dei, which
produces inky-dark wines from the locally adapted
cariñena and garnacha vines, which reach their
pinnacle at the hilltop estate of Alvaro Palacios
in Gratallops, the producer of some of Spain’s best
and most expensive wines.
From the old stone mas (farmhouses) to the heavy
local accent, this is classic Catalonia at its best,
where you’re as likely to find rabbit or boar on the
menu as any of the modern twists and turns that
have propelled the likes of Ferran Adrià of elBulli
to worldwide acclaim. Indeed, even in Adrià’s
molecular malarkey the bold, honest flavours
represent a distilled Catalan essence. Like Dalí and
Gaudí before him, this ultra-modernist has been
inspired by his surroundings to produce a new
vision of this rich and fertile land.
Turkey’s Mediterranean coast is a paradise for water babies
of all ages. Tristan Rutherford takes the plunge
The turquoise sea around Turkey’s sundrenched
coast is as warm in autumn as
it is at the peak of summer. Visitors who’ve
planned a kick-back-and-relax beach week would
be forgiven for undertaking nothing more
adventurous than a banana boat ride around the bay.
But after years of holidaying in Marmaris, Fethiye
and down the coast towards Kas, my family wanted
to upgrade from sandcastles to screams of delight.
Thanks to Turkey’s crystal-clear waters and keen
prices, we could – hitting the world-class water
sports playground that runs right along the coast.
The activities available range from adrenalinpumping
raft rides to sedate boat trips, but most are
gentle, family-friendly and fun. My advice? Book
your trip a day or two in advance. And if it looks
scary, fear not. You’re all in the same boat…
Whitewater Rafting,
Dalaman River
Available at most Turkish resorts, this is a guaranteed
thrill for ages eight and over. The day begins with
a safety briefing on the shores of the Dalaman River,
where rafting novices are fitted with a life jacket and
helmet, then plonked into eight-person inflatables.
Blood-pumping? Definitely. Scary? Not really, as
each boat has an instructor at the rear. Much of the
seven-mile ride is spent cruising through gorges,
alongside waterfalls and through leafy groves,
although staying dry is definitely not an option.
Freediving, Kas
Kas, 25km south of Fethiye, is home to one of
the only freediving centres on the Med. This
underwater swimming discipline predates the scuba
tank by several millennia and was used by both
Japanese pearl divers and Greek sponge fishermen
to plumb the depths of the sea without the use
of oxygen. The courses run by Burak at Mavi
A lazy day trip around Marmaris bay is a superb –
not to mention cheap – way to see the area’s prettiest
islands, best dive spots and quietest swimming coves.
Voyages take place on traditional wooden “gulets”,
sailing boats that line the harbour promenade. All
come with diving platforms and sun beds, offering
complimentary lunches. Before you hop aboard,
choose your vessel wisely: some are tranquil
family-friendly boats, while others set the music
volume to max. Itineraries include the Phosphorus
Turkey’s most remarkable submerged Roman ruins.
After a 9am start from Kas and a short safety
on the uninhabited Kekova, paddles past the stone
this blissfully laidback tour: a watery day out where
getting wet is strictly optional. Cruises depart each
PROPERTY HURGHADA
Over The Fence
You might think living in Egypt would be a challenge, but for new girl
Nicolina and local boy Ross it’s been a wonderful, life-changing experience
78JetAway
NAME: Nicolina Strolla
AGE: 43
JOB: Property management
What was it that made you want to move to
Hurghada in the first place?
I was living in England and working as PA in a private bank
in Mayfair. For personal reasons I wanted a change in
lifestyle and so, after researching various destinations,
my heart became set on Egypt – more specifically
Hurghada on the Red Sea coast.
Can you tell us about your property?
I bought a lovely apartment in the Red Sea Pharaoh
development. The property is a two-bedroom, twobathroom
flat located right in the heart of El Kawser,
Hurghada’s thriving tourist hub. It’s quiet, respectable
and only five minutes walk from the beach and
shopping centre. I’ve got some lovely sea views
from my roof terrace plus a communal pool and
I only paid £30,000 for it.
Why did you choose Hurghada?
Egypt has a great climate, it’s not expensive to buy
property or to live here, and Hurghada has a very low
crime rate. Low-cost airlines fly to Egypt regularly, making
it very accessible, and it’s a year-round resort.
How does life in Egypt compare to the UK?
The lifestyle in Hurghada is much less stressful than the UK.
Overall my experience has been very positive. I’ve found
work here and made many friends. The people are lovely
– always helpful and smiling – and there are a fair number
of Europeans, mostly English, in my building to chat to.
What’s there to do in Hurghada?
There are many lovely places to visit. The sea is a stunning
deep blue and really inviting after a long day at work. There
are plenty of activities on hand, from diving to fishing, going
for dinner and shopping. The weather was a real factor for
me and it’s superb all year round. The winters are mild, like
spring in the UK, and while the summer can be hot, it’s not
as extreme as the Middle East.

PHOTO GETTY
Do you ever regret moving?
I haven’t regretted my decision once. I would recommend
moving to Egypt to anyone, and I’m so happy with the
whole experience that my mum is buying a place in
the same resort!
NAME: Ross Donaldson
AGE: 38
JOB: Regional manager for Experience International
Where do you live?
I live on the Village Road in Mamsha, which is a new
tourist area close to the centre of Hurghada. The
neighbourhood is a mixture of beachfront hotels and
residential complexes and has everything we need –
schools, supermarkets, restaurants and shops – but
only five minutes from the airport and the town centre.
Can you describe your average day?
I like to begin my day with breakfast and a coffee on the
terrace, and then I catch up with the news on the BBC
while checking my emails. I’m fortunate enough to have
an apartment with a pool and beach access, so I have
a swim, which is a great way to start the day. Most of
my days are spent showing clients around the area.
As well as having a wonderful time visiting luxury
marinas and beautiful beaches we also find time
to view properties as well!
How did you end up working in Hurghada?
I was working for a UK company. Our Egyptian partners
invited us to Hurghada and I fell in love with it. I’ve always
enjoyed living abroad and I wanted to experience the
challenge of living in a very different culture. I grew up in
A U G U S T / S E P T E M B E R
the Channel Islands, where our family home had a sea
view. When I found out that I could afford a property with
a sea view I decided the time was right to move. I’ve lived
here for three years now, and have only been back to the
UK once, for work. When it comes to visiting friends and
family, most of them prefer to meet here!
How did you find the lifestyle change?
Moving to a new country isn’t easy, and in the first
couple of months I found it difficult adjusting. But once
I learned to look at life through Egyptian eyes I’ve changed
as a person – I’m much happier, calmer and more
content. The lifestyle is very healthy and sociable.
I spend a lot of time with friends, enjoying everything
that the Red Sea has to offer.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
The cost of living here is within everyone’s grasp. I love
diving, and have completed my PADI course, so I go
as often as time allows. You can go quad biking, but
a trip to Luxor for hot-air ballooning is my favourite.
The pyramids are only a 45-minute flight away and you
can also charter ships for a trip from Hurghada marina.
I go wakeboarding once in a while and am learning how
to kite surf, which is the fastest growing sport in the
region. There are many good restaurants to visit as
well, my favourites being in the Hurghada marina, and
the marina of Abu Tig, in El Gouna.
What’s Hurghada’s must-buy accessory?
There are hundreds of bazaars around and a popular
present to take home is a “shisha” pipe, or a bottle with the
recipient’s name spelled out in sand inside. The perfume
shops are great and leather goods shops are also popular.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking
about moving here?
Be prepared for roads full of camels, donkeys, and
motorcycles that seem to carry more passengers than
the buses! However, there are very few accidents. More
importantly, I would have to say make friends with the
Egyptians. Esplanade Mall on Village Road houses some
of the larger coffee and shisha cafes, and these can be
wonderful places to meet people. I have many Egyptian
friends, and they’ve all been fantastic in helping me enjoy
my time here. I’m constantly surprised by the diversity of
people who’ve made Hurghada their home. When all my
friends get together it’s like a United Nations conference!
BUSINESS LAWRENCE TOMLINSON
“I’m a Yorkshire businessman through and
through,” says Lawrence Tomlinson, chairman and
founder of LNT Group, and one of the richest men
in the UK with an estimated wealth of £400m. “It’s
about that gritty determination and work ethic.”
The LNT Group includes Ginetta, which has been
building race cars in Yorkshire since 1958. A motor
sports obsessive, Tomlinson has just returned from
Le Mans, where the new Ginetta F400 Supercar was
showcased. The Le Mans track holds good memories
for Tomlinson. A talented driver in his own right, he
won the G2 trophy there in 2006.
Tomlinson gave his career a turbo-charged start
with a degree in mechanical engineering from
Bradford University. By the age of 23 he had accrued
an impressive £526,000 of debts importing cars and
boats from the United States and developing his
family’s care home business. “I realised I’d better
make some money to pay it off,” he says.
He’s done just that, in the process adding IT,
engineering, mechanical and aviation companies
to LNT’s ever-growing portfolio. The £175m sale
of the original Orchard Care Home operation two
years ago means Tomlinson will enjoy old age with
diamonds in his dentures, and since purchasing
Ginetta, Tomlinson has made the company a major
international player. He even persuaded former
F1 champion Nigel Mansell to drive a Ginetta
at Le Mans, although the race ended in a crash.
80JetAway
High Flyers
Racing driver, entrepreneur, multimillionaire, Yorkshireman –
Lawrence Tomlinson explains his success to Lucille Howe
Despite this jet-setting lifestyle, Tomlinson
believes in keeping his empire rooted firmly in
Yorkshire. “Around the Leeds area we have a lot of
skilled labour from previous heavy industries such
as the textile trade and the production of tanks,” he
says. “There’s an ageing skill base, but those skills
are still there and I have apprentices who are glad to
learn and pass them on.” East Leeds also has great
motorway links, he says. “And if that don’t work,
we always have pigeons!”
With a new car launched every 18 months,
Tomlinson has no time to count those pigeons,
with a typical day starting at 3.30am. “First, I’ll
send out some emails to get ahead of the day. Am
I annoyed when I have them returned, meaning
there’s someone working as hard as me? No – I’m
delighted!” He then goes back to bed for an hour
between 5-6am, before working out on the moors
with his personal trainer for an hour, then heading
to work in his trusty F400.
Tomlinson’s day is spent liaising with his 700 staff
at the nine companies on site, or on location at the
care homes still in his portfolio. After a long day
he’ll return home to see the kids and watch a bit of
Corrie. “Shane Lynch has a Ginetta. That’s got to be
worth a pint in the Rovers.”
Besides Corrie, Tomlinson’s big ambition is to
launch an electric car, his legacy for a greener future.
George Osborne has verbally endorsed the project,
but the LNT Group is still waiting for a government
grant to aid development. The car is charged by
wind turbines, travels up to 110mph and handles like
a racing vehicle, so what’s not to love? They’re even
working on an environmentally friendly de-icer
for runways. As Tomlinson cheekily puts it, “We’re
looking after your undercarriage.”
around £45,000
his decision to go green
Do say: “I can see you!”
Tomlinson’s Gordon
Gekko-style office
Don’t say: “What
investments do
you have?” All of
Tomlinson’s concerns
are what you call
working businesses
so, “There are no
investments as such.”

ENJOY AN ISLAND RETREAT
Margaret Island is great for a spot of R&R. It’s easily
reached on foot via the Margit Bridge, and the water
tower, the ruins of the Dominican church and the Japanese
gardens are all must-sees. History buffs can wander
among the stone busts of Hungary’s great and good, which
cast a watchful eye over their picnicking countrymen.
TAKE A BATH
No trip to Budapest is complete without taking the plunge,
and Kiraly Baths (spasbudapest.com) on the Buda side of
town are the prettiest of the lot. Built by the Ottoman
Turks in 1570, the baths have hardly changed since.
Neither have the traditions, with segregated naked
bathing for men and women on different days of the
week and non-naked mixed bathing on Sundays.
EXPERIENCE SOME HIGH CULTURE
Up above the Danube sits Castle Hill, Buda’s old town.
Here, you can enjoy some spectacular views of the city
from the Fishermen’s Bastion, while the Royal Palace
houses both the Hungarian National Gallery and the
Budapest History Museum. Get there on the funicular,
a tiny cable railway that takes visitors from the end of the
Chain Bridge to the summit in a matter of minutes.
Budapest
OUT AND ABOUT
DRINK
Adjacent to the Fishermen’s Bastion, the Panorama
restaurant is well worth a visit. It’s far from cheap, but
there are stunning views of Pest and a violinist playing
everything from The Blue Danube to raucous folk songs.
DINE
Ezaz Cafe (ezazetterem.hu) offers burgers, chips,
goulash and paprikash. Friendly staff, cheap cocktails and
an impressive location in the shadow of St Stephen’s
Basilica make it a good stop after a hard day’s sightseeing.
AN HOUR AWAY
After the fall of communism, the statues of Lenin et al
were banished from the city. Check them out at Memento
Park (mementopark.hu) on the city’s outskirts. The
life-sized replica of Stalin’s boots is an apt reminder of
his regime, while the Red Star store selling communist
memorabilia demonstrates just how much has changed.
LOUNGE IN LAVA
Jameos del Agua is the island’s number one tourist
attraction and, by night, the most beautiful club in the
world. The caves are part of a 6km lava tube created by
the Montaña La Corona volcano, which erupted 3,000
years ago. Today, the space has been styled by local artist
César Manrique to include an auditorium with to-die-for
acoustics and a natural lake filled with blind albino crabs
that glow like phosphorus. Stylish and surreal, there’s
something here for kids, lovers and lonely souls.
programme offers free organised bike tours, and the
island has wide, flat roads and lots of beautiful routes,
from an easy breeze through the La Geria wine region
to a race along the dirt tracks of Montaña La Corona.
CATCH A WAVE
If “the Slab”, Lanzarote’s legendary wave, sounds
a little too hardcore for your tastes, then there are
plenty of places for an easier surf on the island. The
coast around La Santa and neighbouring Famara has
about 20 underwater reefs with no continental shelf to
temper the waves roaring out of the deep water, but
Lanzarote
beginners should head to Famara for a lesson with Surf
Built in the 19th century, the pyramids of Guimar
(piramidesdeguimar.net) are six stone terraces said to
mark the winter and summer solstices. Over the years
they’ve been attributed to everything from Freemasons to
cowboy builders, but the plot thickens when you learn that
a lava cave containing artefacts from the Guanche people
(1,000BC) lies beneath. Investigate for yourself at the
site’s fascinating Ethnographic Museum.
OUT AND ABOUT
DINE
Set amid acres of beautiful orchards on a cliff top in Costa
Adeje, El Patio (jardin-tropical.com) is a swish, satisfying
venue serving superior Canarian cuisine alfresco.
DANCE
For a more upmarket clubbing experience than Playa de
las Americas usually offers, try Liquid (liquidtenerife.com),
designed by modish club maestro Tomas Alia. It’s not
cheap, but then who’s counting?
AN HOUR AWAY
It’s just a 40-minute flight to the volcanic isle of El Hierro
(immortalised in Gabe Ibáñez’s recent horror film), but
it feels like a different world. The most distant island in
the archipelago, El Hierro is a haven for ecotourists, with
crystal-clear natural pools and craggy cliffside walks
replacing the more familiar attractions of the Canaries.
Just whatever you do, don’t watch the film first.
SAFETY ONBOARD RESPONSIBLE FLYING WITH JET2.COM
Safety & Comfort
Most of the following guidelines are mandatory under
Civil Aviation Authority Regulations to make sure your
flight is safe, comfortable and enjoyable
SAFETY ONBOARD
Knowing what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency could
make all the difference to you and your family. The safety
information card in your seat pocket and the cabin crew’s safety
briefing give you vital information on the location of exits and
emergency equipment. As this can vary from one airline to another
it is important to pay attention to the safety briefing and read the
safety card each time you fly. Our crew are specially trained to
ensure your safety and security at all times. It is an offence
to refuse to obey any lawful command of the captain or cabin
crew. Our primary concern is YOUR safety at all times.
MOBILE PHONES
To prevent interference to the aircraft communication and
control systems the use of mobile phones or any other
wireless communication devices is restricted onboard.
Mobiles must not be used for internet access, text messaging
or voice calls while onboard the aircraft. If your device is
fitted with a “flight mode” or something similar you should
switch it to this before the aircraft doors are closed to
prevent any accidental transmission or reception.
SEATBELTS
Seatbelts protect you from injury and you are recommended to
keep your belt fastened throughout the flight, and must do so
whenever the seatbelt sign is switched on (during taxi, take-off,
landing and turbulence). Adjust the seatbelt so that it is tight but
comfortable with the buckle the right way around so that it can be
easily released. Infants travelling on a passenger’s lap will require
an infant seatbelt, which our cabin crew will happily fit for you.
SMOKING
Smoking is NOT PERMITTED on any of our flights, and for
the safety of all our passengers the toilet compartments
are fitted with highly sensitive smoke detectors. Violation of
this law may lead to prosecution and a substantial fine.
ALCOHOL
Please bear in mind the fact that high altitude increases
the physical effects of alcohol, so moderate consumption
96JetAway
is recommended. It is illegal to be intoxicated onboard an
aircraft. The consumption of any alcoholic beverage onboard
other than those that have been supplied from the in-flight
bar is not permitted and the crew are authorised to remove
alcohol from passengers drinking from their own supplies.
PASSENGER BEHAVIOUR
Jet2.com expects our passengers to behave in a responsible
manner and we will not tolerate unacceptable behaviour. This
includes foul language and any other behaviour that reduces other
passengers’ enjoyment of the flight and causes them, or our staff,
any degree of distress, discomfort or unnecessary inconvenience.
We reserve the right to ban passengers from future flights if their
behaviour is a threat to the safety of our passengers or crew.
HAND LUGGAGE
One small piece of hand luggage is allowed per person, providing
its weight is less than 10kg and it is no larger than 56cm x 45cm x
25cm including wheels and handles. Any piece of baggage that does
not meet these requirements will be placed in the hold and the
relevant fee will be charged. Any other excess hand luggage will
be placed in the hold. Light or soft articles should be stowed in the
overhead luggage compartments, heavier items under seats. Items
lying loose on empty seats or obstructing the aisles or emergency
exits are dangerous and you will be asked to remove them.
ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT
Once the aircraft is at cruising altitude and the captain has
turned off the “Fasten Seat Belt” sign, you are free to use
laptops, CD players, MP3 players, computer games and most
other electronic items. The use of electronic equipment of
any kind is not permitted during taxi, take-off and landing.
COMFORT
Changes in the cabin air pressure may cause some slight
discomfort in your ears. You can relieve this by swallowing
hard, yawning or holding your nose while gently breathing
out with your mouth closed. Flying also causes your body to
dehydrate so you are advised to have something to drink that is
not alcoholic. For your further comfort, please also refer to the
recommended exercises on the opposite page of this magazine.
IN-FLIGHT SERVICE
On your flight we will be offering you a comprehensive choice
of hot and cold drinks as well as a selection of delicious
snacks, including sandwiches and confectionery. Full details
of our onboard products can be found at the back of this
magazine. We kindly ask all passengers to help keep the
aircraft tidy by not placing rubbish in the seat pockets or on
the floor. Our cabin crew will be collecting rubbish throughout
the flight, so please help them to keep the aircraft tidy.

Stretch Onboard
Short flights to continental European destinations are less likely
to lead to a risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) than long-haul
flights. Nevertheless, it’s good to stretch out. It’s not easy to
walk around onboard, so for your own comfort and relaxation,
why not try some of these seated exercises?
KNEE RAISE
With your hands clasped
together, pull your left
knee up as close as
possible to your chest
1
Remember that extreme
dehydration can increase the
risk of DVT, so drink plenty of
water and minimise your alcohol, tea and
coffee consumption during the flight.
and hold for a count of
eight, then return to a sitting
position. Relax. Do the same
with your right knee. Then
FEET
A Flex your foot at the ankle and
stretch out as far as you can.
Bend your toes forward and
back. Slowly rotate your foot
using a circular motion clockwise,
then counter-clockwise. Relax.
Repeat with the right foot.
B With your feet on the tips
with both knees. Repeat
four times. Relax. Bend
forward and gently massage
both calf muscles.
of your toes, raise and lower
your legs. Relax. Repeat
several times.
C Clench and unclench your
toes. Relax. Repeat several
times.
D Stretch your toes. Relax.
Repeat several times.
THREE THINGS TO BEAR IN MIND ON YOUR TRAVELS
3 Try
2
You will arrive at your
destination feeling much better
if you sit correctly, with your
weight balanced evenly on both buttocks
and without crossing your legs.
A U G U S T / S E P T E M B E R
ANKLE ROTATION
With your feet slightly raised
off the floor, rotate your ankles
10 times towards each other
and then 10 times away from
each other.
SHOULDER
LOOSENER
Hunch your shoulders together,
drop, repeat. Rotate your
shoulders one at a time with
a gentle circular motion, first
forwards, then backwards.
HEAD AND
SHOULDERS
Sitting well back in your seat,
in a comfortable position with
your back and shoulders well
supported, turn your head to the
right as far as you can, then slowly
raise and lower your chin three
times. Relax. Repeat, turning your
head to the left this time. Repeat.
SHOULDER
STRETCH
Grasp your left shoulder with your
right hand, then place your left
hand behind your right elbow.
Gently press your elbow toward
your shoulder. Hold the stretch
for 15 seconds and repeat on the
other side.
deep-breathing exercises to relax. Sit back
in your seat in a comfortable position, close
your eyes and take a deep breath. Hold
it for a while, then exhale and say the word “relax”.
Repeat four or five times.
The Eight Hour Cream Skin Collection will take you through the summer and beyond.
The multi-tasking Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant promotes healthy-looking skin by sealing
in moisture during the warm summer months.
Eight great ways to use Eight Hour Cream this Summer:
1. Save your skin – the ultimate way to save and protect your skin from
drying sun, wind and minor skin irritations.
2. Sunburn reliever – relieve minor cases of sunburn.
3. After beach makeup – use it on your eyelids, cheekbones and lips to
give them a fresh, dewy glow.
4. Treat for feet – the perfect antidote for rough heels and soles when it’s
time for sandals and flip-flops.
5. Body buffing – sweep over your legs after shaving or waxing to prevent
dryness or irritation.
6. Cuticle softener – add to dry cuticles to keep them soft, supple and
perfectly manicured.
7. Keep eyebrows in shape – for a perfectly shaped arch, simply smooth
brows into place with a dab.
8. In-flight hydrator – apply a little as an in-flight moisture boost to
prevent your skin from drying out.
