Happy Earth
Day to you!
Show your appreciation for Mother Nature this day
and beyond with these eco-friendly shopping tips
ON APRIL 22, more than one billion people
around the globe will participate in Earth Day
2012. Want to join in the celebration? Start by
going green while shopping.
Buy local
Forego trips to international retail chains and
support the community instead: buy souvenirs,
clothing and items made by the locals. Think
batik fabrics made in Indonesia, or woven hats
from Baler, Aurora Province. This way, you
help sustain their industry, create more jobs,
and contribute to making their part of the world
fl ourish organically.
Check the packaging
Exercise good judgment before buying: Does
the merchandise come in a plastic blister
pack you’ll merely throw away later, or in a
lovely jute drawstring bag you can reuse to
stash personal items? The more you opt for
products that come in reusable and recyclable
packaging, the more you help reduce waste
materials that go into landfi lls.
Say yes to
reusable bags
Pack a roomy
fabric shopping bag
Make sure it’s durable enough to tote
your purchases so you can do away with
those paper and plastic bags that most
establishments provide.
Pick fair trade
As the items have been made fairly, no one
has been abused in terms of labor or pricing.
By supporting the product and manufacturers,
you help sustain their means of livelihood too.
Virginia Corned Beef
Pandesal
ALL YOU NEED 150g Virginia Corned Beef,
1 small onion, 2 tbsps cooking oil, and
large pieces of pandesal from your favorite
neighborhood bakery, or regular slightly
salted white sliced bread.
WHIP IT UP Slice onion into thin slivers. In
a heated pan, sauté the onion and Virginia
Corned Beef until crisp. Set aside. Slice the
pandesal in half, add in leaves of iceberg
or romaine lettuce (so the juice from the
corned beef doesn’t make the bread turn
soggy), then pack in as much Virginia
Corned Beef as you like. Top with thin slices
of tomato and cucumber for that crunchy
texture. Feel free to add a twist of lemon.
BEST AS a fi lling and fuss-free
breakfast — perfect for early
morning road trips — or
as lunch of comfort food
when you’re too busy to
step out of the offi ce.
