PRAGUE
The 45th Karlovy Vary
International Film Festival
2-10 July
Ask someone to name a film festival,
chances are they’ll say Cannes. If they’re a film
student, however, they might well recommend
Karlovy Vary’s International Film Festival. First
held in 1946, it’s one of the oldest film festivals
in Europe and attracts the full gamut of famous
actors and directors, from Alan Alda to John
Malkovich (pictured) to Franco Zeffirelli. Each
year more than 200 films are screened in
the city, which is over an hour’s drive from
Prague through scenic Bohemia. The festival
is concentrated in the historic city centre, on
the spa promenade that runs between Hotel
Thermal and Grandhotel Pupp and only films
premiered at the festival qualify for the Crystal
Globe grand prize. You can purchase tickets
from 1 July or buy a pass that gets you in
to three screenings each day. And as Karlovy
Vary’s main claim to fame is as a world-class
spa town, why not enjoy a relaxing soak after a
long day of cinema? www.kviff.com
