Hobart College Dance students were excited to be
involved in the DRILL Performance Company’s new
Hobart-based dance work, REBELLION. In May and
June, with the support of Tasmanian Regional Arts,
Salamanca Arts Centre and Ogilvie High School, DRILL
worked with young people to create an accessible, highenergy,
contemporary dance work for Hobart schools
and audiences. REBELLION explores the plight of the
common teenager, trapped under the iron thumb of
the parental unit. The work is a playful take on the notso-silent
battles waged between parent and offspring,
getting your own way, going your own way, declaring
independence and rebelling! Following a school-based
workshop (pictured), Hobart College students, Ayame
Ochi, Jaala Jensen-Meagher, Amy Holloway, Jarrad Berry,
Mikhail Patston-Gill, Bhawana Bista, Rachel Alexander
and Lauren Edwards were selected to help develop the
work.
During June, art students visited the on-campus studio of artist-in-residence, Neil Haddon. Neil talked about the
work he has prepared for an exhibition to be held in Los Angeles in September; this was followed by a floor talk based
on his evolution as an artist. Neil will also be accompanying groups to visit MONA’s new exhibition : “Theatre of the
World”, which includes one of his works.
These have been invaluable experiences for all art students, but especially for the 20 students who have just started
the new UTAS College course at the Tasmanian School of Art, Introduction to Art Studio, Extended Practice. Neil
is a part time lecturer at the School of Art and works in his studio at Hobart College two days per week.
