where are they now ?
Tracey Cameron and sons Timothy and Hugh Steven and Oliver Brown have had long associations with Hobart
College. Tracey’s sons Timothy and Hugh have long since left the College and Oliver is currently in year 11.
Tracey, however, began her year 11 studies at Hobart Matriculation College in 1977 and completed year 12 in
1978. She then went on to the University of Tasmania completing a Bachelor of Education in 1983.
Tracey’s first two teaching years were at the Friend’s School and in 1986 she started part time at The Hobart
College teaching History. During that year her first son Timothy was born and in 1988 son Hugh followed.
Tracey began full time teaching at Hobart College in 1991 after her husband, John Steven, died tragically in a
diving accident. She taught a range of subjects including Child Studies, Social Psychology and both Australian and
Twentieth Century World History.
At the beginning of 1997 Tracey was transferred to Taroona High School where she stayed until 2000. Gaining
promotion, Tracey then moved to Sorell District High School teaching at both the High School and the Primary
campuses. In 2005 Tracey led the English and SOSE Departments at Rose Bay High School and in 2011 moved
to Geeveston District High School as the Acting Assistant Principal. At the beginning of this year Tracey started
at Dover District High School as the Acting Principal and has since been promoted to the substantive Principal
position.
Tracey’s sons, Timothy and Hugh, were in the initial intake of children at the Hobart College crèche when she
resumed full time teaching in 1991.
Hugh went to Mt Nelson Primary school moving onto Taroona High School and studied years 11 and 12 at
Hobart College. Andrew Evans, teacher of Athlete Extended, remembers Hugh as being passionate about his
sport and vividly recalls him coming to him each lesson excitedly saying “Can we play games Taff !!”
On leaving Hobart College Hugh completed a Bachelor of Social Science (Police Studies) at UTAS in 2009.
Following a GAP year in 2010, Hugh then went to the Royal Military College – Duntroon and this year graduated
in June, from the officer Training unit, as a Lieutenant in the Royal Australian Army. He has now taken up his
first posting in the Signals Corp in Townsville.
