FOOTBALL: EVERTON RELIEVED AT NARROW VlbfORY AS NPRWICH FAIL TO RESPOND IN A SEMI-FINAL LACKING IN QUALITY OR IMAGINATION
By Stuart Jones
’ Football Correspondent
' Everton................... 1
Norwich City 0
Events at Villa Park, which
had ' been expected to be
overshadowed by those at
Hillsborough, became in > the
end lirrelevant. Never in the
history of the FA Cup can the
celebrations of the semi-final
winners; , have been more
muted; never can the triumph
have been more empty. ■
/.. Iii the words o f Colin
Harvey, the Everton manager:
“We came off full of, the joys
of spring and then we heard
the terrible news.”
■ Nevin,' the central figure iii
the narrow victory,: described
howthe noiseof the dressing-
' repm - was instantly cut “and
then there' was an awful
silence”.. ■' /
. An afternoon which had
been filled with balloons, in
flated canaries, laughter and
goodwill on the terraces was
almost immediately erased
from the memory. Even under
happier circumstances, the tie
itself, though as colourful as
usual around the perimeter,
would not have left a deep and
’ lasting impression. .
Norwich City, whose style
had been painted so unexpect
edly. vividly across thei season'
until a few weeks ago, were
pale by comparison. Unable to
concentrate on anything else
