An Evening Of Burlesque at
the New Alexandra Theatre
I Dreamed A Dream - the
musical of Susan Boyle’s life
What’s On in and around Southside
Amy Lamé at mac Birmingham
The Southside district of Birmingham not only accommodates
the hustle and bustle of the Gay Village, it also hosts a
wealth of theatre, arts and music events for visitors to enjoy.
Here’s a small selection of entertainment events we think
you might find appealing during the Birmingham Pride festival
and beyond.
I Dreamed A Dream - Susan Boyle
Tue 29 May to Sat 2 June, Birmingham Hippodrome
Susan Boyle's extraordinary journey from never-been-kissed
fortysomething unknown to global superstar-singer is very much
the stuff that dreams are made of. No wonder, then, that this
rags-to-riches tale has been deemed suitable material for a
stage musical! Elaine C Smith, best known as Mary Doll in
BBCTV’s Rab C Nesbitt, takes the lead role, and will be joined
by Susan herself, who'll be making a guest appearance,
notwithstanding unforeseen circumstances.
An Evening Of Burlesque
Sat 2 June, The New Alexandra Theatre
Comedy, magic and vocal harmony are here combined with
couture costumes, top-notch choreography and virtuoso
classical piano performances to present a show that pays
tribute to the once-again-popular art of burlesque.
Unhappy Birthday - Amy Lamé
Fri 8 June, mac Birmingham
American-born Amy is a naturalised Brit who made her stage
debut back in the mid-1990s with her memorably titled onewoman
show, Gay Man Trapped In A Lesbian's Body. She's
since gone on to co-found the Olivier Award-winning
‘performance club night and collective’ Duckie, which she's
toured to the Midlands from its London home of the Royal
Vauxhall Tavern. Amy here appears with her Edinburgh preview
show, which she says 'cracks open the cult of celebrity and
fandom; flays fat, faith and sexual identity; probes the pains of
growing up; and cross-examines a curious nostalgia for a time
that may never have existed except in the bedroom of our
imagination'.
Birmingham Pride Proms
Sat 9 June, Adrian Boult Hall, Birmingham Conservatoire
Birmingham Pride Proms 2012 promises to be a fabulous night
out for its loyal and devoted audience. The Proms will see a
capacity crowd of 500 people really getting into the spirit of
things by waving their rainbow flags and blowing their proms
hooters. The night’s repertoire includes Mussorgsky’s Night On
Bald Mountain; Strauss’s Die Fledermaus Overture;
Tchaikovsky’s Romeo & Juliet Suite; John Williams’ The Phantom
Menace; and Verdi’s Chorus Of The Hebrew Slaves from
Nabucco. The concert will also include old Proms favourites
such as Pomp And Circumstance, Fantasia On British Sea
Songs, Rule Britannia and Jerusalem.
