PREMIER WEEK 5 REVIEW
Fraser Tech managed a hard fought win over Melville in the Game of the Round, while Hamilton Old
Boys and Hamilton Marist both had wins to keep them at the top of the table.
GAME OF THE ROUND
Fraser Tech 22 – Melville 15
Fraser Tech came away with a hard fought win over
Melville at Mill Street in the ‘Game of Round 5’.
In an even match the visiting Melville side made a lot of
the play and took it to Tech, but their discipline cost them
with several penalties killing their momentum. Melville
were still in the game in the final 10 minutes but the resolute
Tech defence was able to hang on.
Tech made a steady start and were on the scoreboard
early with two penalty kicks from first five Chauncy Edwardson.
The match then turned into a tough grind for most of the
first half with lots of penalties slowing down the pace of
the game.
Late in the first spell Melville breached the Tech defence
with a try from flanker Conway Brady, converted by first
five Matt Hogg, to take the lead.
Edwardson kicked a penalty on halftime to give the
home side a 9-7 lead at the break.
After a tight first half the game sprung to life with a lot
more action at both ends of the field in the second 40
minutes.
It was Melville who struck first in the second half when
Number 8 Haimona Waititi drove over the line after good
build up play from the visitors.
However Tech responded almost instantly to regain the
lead with a try to centre Save Tokula, who was Tech’s
main attacking threat whenever he touched the ball.
With 15 minutes remaining Tokula showed his class
again, scoring his second try to push Tech’s lead out to 19
-12.
The momentum was now with Tech and the penalty
count against Melville continued to hinder them. Edwardson
kicked his fourth three-pointer of the day to make it a
10 point lead.
Hogg replied with a penalty of his own to get Melville
within seven again and that set up a tense final 10 minutes
where the visitors threw everything at the Tech defence.
But the hosts were able to hold on for a hard earned
victory while Melville took away a deserved bonus point
from the match.
Hamilton Marist 20 – Te Rapa 0
Hamilton Marist made it five wins in a row with their
victory over Te Rapa at Marist Park.
The home side got off to a fast start with a try to flanker
Josaan Levien plus a conversion and two penalties from
first five Jason Kjestrup. But they didn’t add any further
points until near fulltime when hooker Sefo Setefano
crossed the line, with Kjestrup again converting.
Despite their slow start Te Rapa fought well to stay in
the contest but were unable to trouble the Marist defence
with the home side impressively keeping them to zero
points.
Hamilton Old Boys 31 – Morrinsville Sports 13
Hamilton Old Boys moved into first equal on the table
with a bonus point win over Morrinsville Sports at Campbell
Park to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
Wing Sione Tupa was the star, running in a hat-trick of
tries, while loose forward Brodie Locke and centre Dean
Devcich also got on the score sheet. First five Kane Adams
added three conversions.
Morrinsville were right in the match until a burst of
points from Old Boys early in the second half. The home
team’s points came from a try to prop Tom Rowling and
eight points from the boot of first five Andre Wilson.
Otorohanga 25 – Hautapu 0
Otorohanga managed a bonus point win in their match
against Hautapu at Island Reserve to keep them firmly in
the top four.
Exciting fullback Sekove Seriki had a good outing for
the home team, scoring two tries, while there was also
tries to lock Josh Ferguson and first five Byron Morgan.
Centre Rupeni Seduadua kicked a conversion and a penalty.
Hautapu made a strong start to the match but couldn’t
seem to make inroads into a solid Otorohanga defence.
The ability of the home side to attack from anywhere on
the field proved to be the difference between the sides.
Te Awamutu Sports 20 – University 5
Te Awamutu Sports ground out a tough win over University
at Albert Park to hold on to their spot in the top
four.
Debutant hooker Jack Munce, fullback Hayden Ivil and
wing Shuaib Samaai scored the tries for the home side.
First five Todd Doolan added a conversion and a penalty.
University, who slumped to their fifth straight loss, were
unable to score any points in the first half but managed a
late consolation try from replacement wing William
Mango.
Jono Sullivan in support, during their win Round 5 win over
PREMIER WEEK 7 PREVIEW
Note: Round 6, the ’Anzac Day’ round, was played on Wednesday and Thursday (April 24 and 25). The split round,
played partly in pre-season and partly during this week, was not completed in time for this publication. The results and
updated points tables from Round 6 will be published in next week’s edition.
Round 6 games played on March 16: Te Awamutu Sports 24 - Hautapu 20, Melville 23 - Hamilton Marist 8.
Round 6 games played this week (not played at time of publication): Hamilton Old Boys v Otorohanga, Fraser Tech v
University, Te Rapa v Morrinsville Sports.
Round 7
Saturday 27 April 2013
All games kick-off at 2:45pm
(previews written before the midweek Round 6 games)
Fraser Tech vs Hautapu
Mill Street, Hamilton
Struggling Hautapu travel to Mill Street to take on Fraser
Tech.
Hautapu has had a tough start to the season with just one
win and a draw from six games, while Fraser Tech are
progressing well and are slowly moving into top four
contention.
Tech, who won both matchups between these two sides
last season, will be favourites to take out this match on
current form. However Hautapu will be desperate for a
win which could be dangerous for the home side.
Hamilton Marist vs University
Marist Park, Hamilton
Teams at opposite ends of the table meet at Marist Park
with in-form Hamilton Marist hosting bottom of the table
University.
After a first up loss Marist continues to impress, chalking
up five straight wins, while University have done the
opposite to start the season - losing their first five games.
Marist comfortably won both their fixtures against University
last season and will be confident of another win
here, but University are a better side than their start to the
season would suggest.
Otorohanga vs Morrinsville Sports
Island Reserve, Otorohanga
Morrinsville Sports head to Otorohanga for what is always
a tough away fixture at Island Reserve.
Defending champions Otorohanga look to be back to
near their best with some good form moving them into the
top four. Morrinsville have had a mixed start to the year
but could easily be higher on the table after a couple of
narrow losses.
Otorohanga made easy work of Morrinsville in their two
games against them last season and will be expected to
take the points again here, but this is an improving Morrinsville
side that should put up a good fight.
Te Awamutu Sports vs Hamilton Old Boys
Albert Park, Te Awamutu
Two teams to have good starts to the season, Te Awamutu
Sports and Hamilton Old Boys, face off at Albert
Park.
Old Boys have been the form team so far, winning their
first five matches, while Te Awamutu have shown they
will be a playoff contender this year with four wins and
two losses.
The red and blacks took out both games between these
two last year, but only by narrow margins on both occasions.
This should be a very tight match, particularly with
Te Awamutu at home.
Te Rapa vs Melville
St Andrews Park, Hamilton
Te Rapa and Melville, both currently in the bottom half
of the table, play at St Andrews Park.
Melville made a great start to the year, winning their first
two games, but have gone on to lose their next four. Te
Rapa also started with a win but has found the going a lot
tougher since then.
However both teams have been competitive and will be
desperate for a win to push them up the table. Melville
will be confident they can get the right result but Te Rapa
will be up for it in front of their home crowd.
