PREMIER WEEK 9 REVIEW
Otorohanga held on for a five-point win over Te Awamutu Sports in the Game of the Round, while
Hamilton Marist extended their winning streak to eight with a win over Hamilton Old Boys.
GAME OF THE ROUND
Otorohanga 34 – Te Awamutu Sports 29
Otorohanga held on for a hard-earned win over Te Awamutu
Sports at Albert Park in the ‘Game of Round Nine’.
The 2012 premier champions headed back down State Highway
3 with their third straight bonus point win, while a late
penalty for Te Awamutu saw them take away two deserved
bonus points from the match.
The visitors got off to a fast start with second five Joe Perawiti
scoring a simple try from a scrum five metres out.
Perawiti converted his own try and added a penalty shortly
after as Otorohanga jumped out to an early 10-0 lead.
Te Awamutu then settled into the game and eventually got
on the scoreboard when first five Todd Doolan scored under
the posts after a good build up from the home forwards.
The match continued at a quick pace with good running
rugby from both sides - Otorohanga in particular prepared to
run the ball from all corners of the field with their offloads
causing the Te Awamutu defence problems.
Otorohanga were rewarded for their adventurous play as they
kept the ball in hand and scored in the corner through prop
Villiame Seuseu.
However Te Awamutu responded superbly just before the
break as Doolan found a big gap in the Otorohanga midfield
before spinning a pass to fullback Hayden Ivil who showed
electric pace to score, narrowing the margin to 15-12.
Just like the first half Otorohanga came out of the blocks
quickly and flanker Rory Grice crashed his way over to extend
the visitors’ lead.
But the see-sawing action continued as Te Awamutu halfback
Jarred Bayliss pounced on a loose ball for a well-taken
try. Doolan’s conversion brought the margin back to three.
Otorohanga then launched an extended period of attack in
the Te Awamutu 22 and Grice was in the thick of the action
again as he crossed for his side’s bonus point try.
Despite the visitors continuing to dominate possession their
big forward pack was becoming visibly tired and the Te Awamutu
defence was courageous in holding them out to keep
themselves in the match. But the host’s line was finally
breached again with lock Anthony Wise the scorer.
With five minutes remaining Ivil scored his second try of the
game to secure a bonus point for Te Awamutu and set up an
interesting finish to the match.
Otorohanga were able to spoil well on defence in the final
minutes and Te Awamutu had to be content with a penalty on
full time from replacement first five Waylon Tangohau to
ensure a second bonus point.
Fraser Tech 36 – Morrinsville Sports 21
Fraser Tech was always in control in their match against
Morrinsville Sports at Mill Street, coming away with a bonus
point win.
Tech wing Matt Kenny continued his good form with two
tries. Others to get on the score sheet for the home side were
first five Chauncy Edwardson, wing Navi Sikivou and flanker
Wilisoni Qiqiawaqa with a penalty try also awarded.
Morrinsville fought back well after being shut out in the first
half, with tries to flankers Shaun Peek and Josh Janmaat and
wing Niko Masirewa.
Hamilton Marist 22 – Hamilton Old Boys 8
Hamilton Marist held on to their spot at the top of the table
with a win over Hamilton Old Boys at Marist Park.
Centre Niko Malo, wing Joe Webber and loose forward Zane
Kapeli scored tries for Marist as they were able to pull away
in the second half after a tight first 40 minutes.
Old Boys scored their only try of the match in the first half
through prolific winger Sione Tupa, and a solitary penalty
from fullback Kane Adams was the only scoring they could
muster in the second spell.
Hautapu 23 – Melville 15
Hautapu recorded a good win, and a much needed four
points, over Melville at Collins Road.
The visitors scored just two tries, through outside backs
Tongafau Soli and Josh Gascoigne, but were kept in front
thanks to the boot of first five Liam Eldridge who kicked two
conversions and three penalties.
Melville’s tries came from Number 8 Jake Ale and prop
Frank Ale, with first five Talia Taulaulele adding a conversion
and a penalty.
University 53 – Te Rapa 17
University produced a superb first 40 minutes, playing into a
stiff breeze, to shoot out to a 45-0 lead against Te Rapa at St
Andrews Park which led to their first win of the season.
The students ran riot with William Mango (2), Ethan Pollock,
Ryan Nixon, Whetu Douglas, Ben Dickson, Trent
Parkes and Sam McCahon all scoring as they finally registered
a win in 2013.
Te Rapa faired far better after the break, winning the second
half thanks to two tries from Leigh Bristowe and one from
Ashley Hayward, but the damage had been done.
Otorohanga flanker Rory Grice crashes into his opposite number,
Norman Solofa of Te Awamutu Sports, during their Round 9 clash.
Top of the table Hamilton Marist face arguably their toughest test of the year against second-placed Otorohanga,
while the other clash of note is fourth-placed Te Awamutu Sports versus fifth-placed Fraser Tech.
Round 10 - Saturday 18 May 2013
All games kick-off at 2:45pm
Hautapu vs Te Rapa
Memorial Park, Cambridge
Seventh-placed Hautapu host bottom of the table Te Rapa at
Memorial Park in Cambridge.
Hautapu, buoyed by an important win last weekend, will be
expecting to make it back to back victories with revenge also
on their mind after losing to Te Rapa earlier in the year.
Te Rapa has struggled in recent weeks, including a disappointing
loss to University last weekend, but they should head
into this match with self-belief knowing they have already
beaten Hautapu this season.
Morrinsville Sports vs Melville
Campbell Park, Morrinsville
This match up at Campbell Park in Morrinsville should be an
interesting one between two evenly matched teams.
Morrinsville (eighth place) and Melville (sixth place) have
not been far off the pace this season, mixing it with the top
four sides, so this game will be a good gauge to see where
both clubs are at.
Melville will be slightly favoured, due to their better place
on the table and a win over Morrinsville earlier in the year,
but playing at home will be a big advantage for Morrinsville.
Otorohanga vs Hamilton Marist
Island Reserve, Otorohanga
Hamilton Marist faces their second top of the table clash in
as many weeks at Island Reserve.
After Hamilton Old Boys’ loss to the Marist last weekend,
Otorohanga has leapfrogged them into second spot and will
give Marist arguably their toughest match of the season.
Despite having to travel to Otorohanga, Marist has every
reason to be confident - they have had eight straight wins after
a first up loss back in March. They also beat Otorohanga 35-
15 back in round one.
Te Awamutu Sports vs Fraser Tech
Albert Park, Te Awamutu
Fourth-placed Te Awamutu Sports take on fifth-placed
Fraser Tech at Albert Park in Te Awamutu.
Despite being behind Te Awamutu on the table and playing
away, Tech will be confident of getting the win that would
push them into the top four.
However Te Awamutu has proven a very tough side so far
this season and will rate their chances in front of their home
fans, despite going down to Tech in a high-scoring match
back in round one.
University vs Hamilton Old Boys
Waikato University, Hamilton
University finally got themselves in the win column last
weekend which will be a huge boost ahead of a tough fixture
this weekend, at home against Hamilton Old Boys.
Third-placed Old Boys, who won the match up between
these two earlier in the year reasonably comfortably, will head
in as strong favourites.
But University, whose win last weekend lifted them off the
foot of the table, have plenty of talent and could push Old
Boys if it clicks for them.
