About the course
These courses emphasise the creative aspects
of the product design process, combining
‘traditional’ hand-generated design work with
the latest computer techniques to aid design. A
multidisciplinary, studio-based approach is used
to explore and create design solutions.
The specialist studio facilities offer the latest
computer techniques to aid the design process.
Opportunities are also available to work with
PCs, Macs, rapid prototyping and practical model
making throughout the course curriculum.

What you will learn
The course is designed for students interested
in the creative design process.The course lays
down the foundations of design, CAD, CGI
and animation, 3D modelling and product
development. Students may choose to specialise
in areas such as consumer product design or
computer-aided product design.
What you will study
In the first part of the course, you study subjects
such as: Product Development;Visual Design;
Modelling and Animation; 3D Skills; Marketing.
The second part of the course further develops
these areas via topics such as: Design and
Development;Visual Design; Marketing; Analysis
and Design; Lifestyle Product Design; CGI and
Animation; Live Project.
The final part of the course develops
professional-level skills and practice through:
Individual Design Project; Advanced CGI and
Animation; Product Innovation.
Special features
The department has extensive modelling
workshops and laboratories, as well as a
purpose-built Design Studio with CAD/M and
modelling software, in which you can carry out
hands-on practical simulation and visualisation.
Rapid prototyping and 3D scanning facilities
are also linked to various CAD and analysis
software.You are encouraged to enter national
and European competitions.The department has
been successful in several of these competitions
in recent years.

The course is internationally recognised and
designed to meet the needs of industry.
We have carefully developed a course that
produces graduates able to work in a variety
of areas within product design. Due to the
multidisciplinary nature of the course, you can
enter many different forms of employment.
Our graduates have found jobs in areas such as
product development, games design, freelance
design, design management, CAD, technical sales
and product research. Some choose to continue
their formal education in the form of masters
and research degrees.
Professional accreditation
We are seeking recognition by the Chartered
Society of Designers and membership of the
Institute of Engineering Design.
