English Language for international Students
Pre-sessional English Foundation Programme (September and January start)
This one-semester course is designed to prepare international students for academic
study at a British university. The minimum entry requirement is IELTS 4.5# or equivalent
(e.g.TOEFL 475# written/152# computer based). It is expected that by the end of the
course students will reach the equivalent of IELTS 6.0 for undergraduates and 6.5 for
postgraduates and will be ready to undertake their chosen degree programme. Please
see our information for international students on page 18.
The teaching and learning of English involves a variety of language activities in speaking,
listening, reading and writing. Students also sit in on lectures in their chosen area of
degree study. The programme develops both general and academic English language
skills.
English Support Classes
We provide a number of English language support classes for international students
for whom English is not the first language. Our academic writing class is particularly
successful.
International students may also take the module ‘English language and communication
skills’ on the undergraduate modular scheme as a 20 credit option.
#Valid for 2 years from date of testing.
