It’s a spectrum of color and sound that reminds me of your power. And every day sees another piece of my soul pulled and pummeled from my body. But I hurt and it hurts and it’s all that I know right now. And it consumes me as only the desire for freedom can do. It seems like an eternity that I’ve pondered squeezing out from under your torment. But no matter who I am today, you always find me. Today I am 12-year-old boy. I am a single mother. I am an elderly grandmother. I am your sister. I am your wife. No matter who I am, it still hurts the same. The beatings. The backhanded slaps. The kicks to the ribs. Your body holding me down. It has all brought me to this. I smooth my fingers up the cool, metal barrel of my salvation. And I sigh as it brings a smile to my face. No more tiptoeing around the house. No more taking a different way to school. No more secrets and tears as I try to bear your breath against my neck. It has all come to this. Only this time, I turn the hurt on you. I wield the power this time. My mind flutters between placing the hard steel against my temple and pointing it at your back as you walk away from me, muttering your disgust. I know I don’t have much time because next time might be when you win. The day you break me. And so I close my eyes, take aim and squeeze. No more hurt.
