Marmande champion
Burgess wins $10,000 Novice/Non-Pro Finals
Marvin Marmande and Willys Tivio Dell captured the $10,000 Novice/Non-
Pro World Championship.
Marvin Marmande, Theriot,
Louisiana, had an
angel on his shoulder,
when he closed out 2004 in first
place with $36,336 in the $10,000
Novice/Non-Pro division. Yesterday,
Marmande officially became
the $10,000 Novice/Non-Pro
World Champion.
Last August, however, in spite
of being in the lead, Marmande
was ready to hang up his spurs,

stuff out of his apartment at college,

lunch, and they told me he talked about
me winning the World and how much
it meant to him.
“I decided then to really hit it hard.
I had been behind a little bit all year,
but that’s when I really took the lead.
I think I had an angel in Heaven and I
was determined to do it for him.”
Marmande, 47, who owns M&L
Engine, a company that builds generator
packages for various power sources,
raises Braford cattle and sugar cane on
his ranch in Theriot. Until the fall of
2003, he had won just $1,200 in cutting
competition — most of it 15 years
earlier.
But he always attended the NCHA
Futurity to watch the action, observe
the top riders, and study horses that
went through the Futurity sales.
“When I started, I had a mental picture
of what it’s supposed to look like,”
noted Marmande, who purchased the
stallion Abracadabracre in partnership
with Hanes Chatham in 2001.
In 2002, Marmande decided to look
for a few mares to breed to Abracadabracre.
He found Willys Tivio Dell, a full
sister to Abracadabracre’s mother that
December at the NCHA Futurity Sales.
She was 11, at the time, in foal, and had
not been ridden in eight years.
The following spring, after she
weaned her foal, Marmande decided to
try Willys Tivio Dell on cattle.

Non-Pro World Champion Mary Jo Milner for fourth with 437 going into the third round of competition.
“She was unbelievable,” he remembered.
“I went to a circuit show and she
won everything. I didn’t even know
what I was doing. She taught me how
to show. She’s just a great horse.”
Willys Tivio Dell, now 14, was so
impressive, Marmande sold her baby,
sight unseen, to someone who had
watched him show the mare.
Marmande had paid $11,000 for an
in-foal Willys Tivio Dell and ended up
selling her baby for more than he had
paid for her.
Although he was not planning to
haul for the World, things just fell in
place. “Where I live, there aren’t any
trainers,” he explained. “But when I’d
come to the shows, the trainers took a
liking to my horse and during a run,
they’d give me little tips.
“It’s a testimonial to that mare,”
Marmande added. “She’s extremely
smart and quick, and has a lot of eye
appeal. I couldn’t have done it without
her.”
La Femme Nikita nails the win
When she started riding La Femme
Nikita in 2004, Traci Burgess, Perrin,
Texas, had never shown at the World
Finals and had not planned to be in
Amarillo this year.
Burgess, the wife of trainer Jon
Burgess, was showing La Femme Nikita
in aged events — she was a finalist in
seven of them last year — had competed
just for practice in a few weekend
shows. But when she found out she was
ranked 51st in the $10,000 Novice/Non-
Pro standings and eligible to show in
the World Finals, she decided to give it
a shot.
Yesterday, Burgess and La Femme
Nikita won the World Finals with a
218-point run and jumped from 51st
place, with $4,959, to eighth place, with
$13,450.
“It hasn’t totally sunk in,” said
Burgess, who also split first in the first
go-round with 219 and was third in the
second round with 218.5. “I’m pretty
excited. I’m still shaking, in fact.
“At the Super Stakes (Classic in
2004) we made the Non-Pro and Non-
Pro Limited finals and I got nervous
on her and chilled up. So today, I told
myself to just go in there like it was a
regular show. And it worked.”
While Traci and Jon were looking
through the NCHA Futurity Sale catalog
in 1999, the name La Femme Nikita
caught Traci’s eye.
“Who in the world would name a
horse La Femme Nikita?” she asked.
Later, after the yearling filly went
through the sale ring, Jon tossed an
envelope in Traci’s lap and said, “Here.
You own La Femme Nikita.”
The yearling filly, sired by Choice
Acre, had cost $3,000. “She was cheap
enough that we thought I could give it
a try,” said Traci, who trained the filly
herself.
“It’s been a challenge,” she admit-
ted. “But we’re finally there.
“When she was younger, she was
real flighty. Jon told me a couple of
times to just put her in the pasture
and breed her. He couldn’t stand to be
around her sometimes because she’d
be great and then, all of a sudden, she
would just take off.
“But she was the only thing I had
to show, really, so I kept on trying her.
And it’s worked out.
“She’s very determined in what she
does and she does not want to lose a
cow. If she does, she gets mad at herself
and she’ll be even tougher on the next
one. She’s got a lot of heart.”
La Femme Nikita already has a
fan club. The Burgesses have sold one
embryo out of her and plan to get their
own embryo sired by Chula Dual,
although it will probably be next year.
While Traci always had faith in La
Femme Nikita, Jon may her biggest fan.
“Jon was asked as soon as I got done
(at the World Finals), if we were going
to sell her,” Traci noted. “And he said,
‘No, she’s not for sale.’”
Non-Pro action
Joe Howard Williamson, who was
$10,000 behind Non-Pro front-runner
Mary Jo Milner, cut the lead with wins
in the first and second round. Williamson
was aboard Squeaks My Alias, the
horse his daughter, Denver Jo, rode to
win the Senior Youth World Championship
last weekend.
