LHR Royal Flush second with 219
Mackie Hursh, left, and Michael Cooper, right, with 221 points on Smart An Sweet and Jae
Bar One Time, respectively.
Mackie Hursh and Michael
Cooper topped the first
day of NCHA Futurity
open competition with 221-point
scores on Smart An Sweet and Jae
Bar One Time, while Phil Hansen
was second with 219.
“That’s kind of how she is
day in and day out,” said Hursh,
after he showed Smart An Sweet,
owned by Thomas Ross, Amarillo,
Tex.
“She just wants to do he job
every time and doesn’t have any
bad days. She gives me a lot of
confidence.”
The Sweet Little Pepto daughter,
started by Jason Taylor in
California, caught Hursh’s eye last
spring, when he was at trainer Rob
Ferber’s place in Hawley, Tex. to
look at another horse.
“I just happened to be at the
right place at the right time,” said
Hursh, who took Smart An Sweet
Left to right: Foster Johnston scored 217.5 points with Quatros A Lena, by Quejanaisalena, owned by Terry Lovelace; Boyd Rice marked 217 points on CR Sun
Reys, by Dual Rey, owned by Center Ranch; and Jeremy Barwick showed Capoos Pep, by Dual Pep, to earn 216.5 for The Capoo Interests.
because of the handy way that he moved
in the sale arena.
“He always tries and the cow means
a lot to him,” said Cooper. “But he also
has such a big motor. He is a tough, fast
horse.”
Phil Hansen bought LHR Royal
Flush for South Lazy H Ranch from
Scott Johnson, who had sold him LHR
Smooth Jamie May, the Smooth As A
Cat daughter that Hansen showed to
earn over $250,000 and the title of 2010
NCHA Horse of the Year.
“I got him as a late two-year-old and
he’s been a good horse the whole time,”
said Hansen of LHR Royal Flush. “I like
his strength and the way he is so fluid
through his moves.”
Bets Cat, Light Reys, and Quatros A
Lena tied with yesterday’s third highest
score — 217.5 points.
FUTURITY
AWARDS PARTY
Honoring the
Futurity Finalists
Saturday, Dec. 10th
on the arena floor
after the Open Finals
EVERYONE IS INVITED!
“There’s a little pressure, showing a
good one like her,” said Kenneth Miller,
who shows Bets Cat, a full sister to Bet
Hesa Cat, who currently leads NCHA
World championship standings under
Austin Shepard.
Miller shows Bets Cat, by High Brow
Cat, out of world champion Bet Yer Blue
Boons, for Gordon Sevig, who purchased
her as a yearling out of the NCHA Futurity
Sale.
Miller, who started riding Bets Cat
when he went to work for Sevig in September,
credits Dale Bennett and Steve
Oehlhof for the mare’s good foundation.
R.L. Chartier and his wife, Mica,
raised Light Rey, by CD Lights, out of
an unshown daughter of Dual Rey.
“She’s a quick stopper and real
cowy,” said Chartier. “She’s been consistent
all year long and she wants to do
it, so that’s a good thing.”
Chartier won the 2008 NCHA Futurity
Ltd Open and placed fourth in the
open finals aboard Hay Maker, owned
by Scott Cusick.
Foster Johnston is showing Quatros
A Lena as a catch-rider for Craig
Thompson, who won the 2006 NCHA
Futurity on Oh Cay Felix, and scored
215.5 yesterday on Felix’s half-brother,
Lach Down, for Felix’a owners, Patrick
and Laura Collins.
“I came down last week and rode her
twice,” said Johnston of the Quejanaisalena
daughter owned by Terry Lovelace.
“I’ve ridden her about six minutes total
— Craig’s done all the work.”
