day of NCHA Futurity
open competition with 221-point
scores on Smart An Sweet and Jae
Bar One Time, while Phil Hansen
was second with 219.
“That’s kind of how she is
day in and day out,” said Hursh,
after he showed Smart An Sweet,
owned by Thomas Ross, Amarillo,
Tex.
“She just wants to do he job
every time and doesn’t have any
bad days. She gives me a lot of
confidence.”
The Sweet Little Pepto daughter,
started by Jason Taylor in
California, caught Hursh’s eye last
spring, when he was at trainer Rob
Ferber’s place in Hawley, Tex. to
look at another horse.
“I just happened to be at the
right place at the right time,” said
Hursh, who took Smart An Sweet
home with him that day.
The 221-point score was the
highest for Hursh in Will Rogers
Coliseum, although he marked

“James rode the horse in April and
fell in love with him,” said Cooper. “He’s
been a good horse all along.”

“He always tries and the cow means
a lot to him,” said Cooper. “But he also
has such a big motor. He is a tough, fast
horse.”
Phil Hansen bought LHR Royal
Flush for South Lazy H Ranch from
Scott Johnson, who had sold him LHR
Smooth Jamie May, the Smooth As A
Cat daughter that Hansen showed to
earn over $250,000 and the title of 2010
NCHA Horse of the Year.
“I got him as a late two-year-old and
he’s been a good horse the whole time,”
said Hansen of LHR Royal Flush. “I like
his strength and the way he is so fluid
through his moves.”

score — 217.5 points.

who shows Bets Cat, a full sister to Bet
Hesa Cat, who currently leads NCHA
World championship standings under

Miller, who started riding Bets Cat
when he went to work for Sevig in September,
credits Dale Bennett and Steve
Oehlhof for the mare’s good foundation.
R.L. Chartier and his wife, Mica,
raised Light Rey, by CD Lights, out of
an unshown daughter of Dual Rey.
“She’s a quick stopper and real
cowy,” said Chartier. “She’s been consistent
all year long and she wants to do
it, so that’s a good thing.”
Chartier won the 2008 NCHA Futurity
Ltd Open and placed fourth in the
open finals aboard Hay Maker, owned
by Scott Cusick.

Thompson, who won the 2006 NCHA
Futurity on Oh Cay Felix, and scored
215.5 yesterday on Felix’s half-brother,
Lach Down, for Felix’a owners, Patrick
and Laura Collins.
“I came down last week and rode her
twice,” said Johnston of the Quejanaisalena
daughter owned by Terry Lovelace.
“I’ve ridden her about six minutes total
— Craig’s done all the work.”
