Roger Hemandez. <strong>Ames</strong> Reproduction Branch<br />

was rrcently awarded a special certificate by the<br />

Veteran’s Administration in recognition of<br />

L000 hours of active participation in the VA volunteer<br />

seewice program Hernandez. a volunteer lor<br />

16 years, works out of the VA hospitals in Pak~ Alto<br />

and Menlo Park<br />

In I~470. Hemandez received a letter from President<br />

Nixon commending him on hit, efforts m se~ling<br />

up a program to help rehabilitate lamily members<br />

ol blinded veterans.<br />

On <strong>July</strong> 7, <strong>1976</strong>. the Women’s Advisory Group<br />

will hotd its <strong>July</strong> Brown Bag Luncheon.<br />

At this time. Sister Jane Md[er. Chairman of the<br />

~|islory Department of Lone Mountain College. San<br />

Francisco, California. will speak on "’Role of Husbands<br />

in the Growth oi the Women’s Movement."<br />

Sister Miller has her Ph.D. trom Stanford Universip.<br />

and has been on the faculty oi Lone Mountain College<br />

since 1937, serving for the past several years as<br />

Chairman ot the <strong>History</strong> Department. She has ,it/st<br />

completed a book on the above subject and this will<br />

I~rovide an opportunity for <strong>Ames</strong> personnel to gain<br />

SOme historical perspective on the growth of file<br />

movement and the dominant figures in Jls develop-<br />

rllent.<br />

industrialization studies<br />

"i"wo types of companies have been invited by<br />

<strong>NASA</strong> to make proposals for studying a broad<br />

concept of future research, development, and operations<br />

activRy known as "space industrialization"<br />

Space industrialization is defined as space activ<br />

ities which are undertaken primarib for Ibe prodnclion<br />

of goods and sen’ices which are of ma~or<br />

economic benefit This next phase ot the space<br />

program is the logical extension of most of the space<br />

work undertaken to date mostl5 for scientific or<br />

expioratory purposes<br />

The Marshall Space F]igbl Center. working under<br />

the direction of Ihe <strong>NASA</strong> <strong>Office</strong> of Space [Tlight,<br />

expects to award contracts for two parallel studie~<br />

which will Is} tffe necessary grout~dwork lot an<br />

evolutionar3 space industrialization effort covering<br />

the period ]9g0 Z0a0. One ofthe contracts ’sill be<br />

awarded 1.o an aerospace firm and the other to a<br />

n’search or "think-tank’" compan3<br />

The main objective of this study effort is to develop<br />

an evohltionar 3 space ihdustnalization program<br />

which could lead from Shuttle-Spacelab and earl[,<br />

space station experiments to p,ermanent, practical.<br />

The STA is a modified Grumman Gubstream It<br />

twin e.gine jet aircraft that will be used m trey.<br />

traimng ~o smmlate the fligh~ characteri:,tics of the<br />

Space Shuttle Orbiter.<br />

Johnson (.7enter personnel will conducl a receiving<br />

inspection on the aircntff at’Cer its arrnai.<br />

The S1A will then be returned late thi:, month to<br />

Grumman Aerospace Corp for installation of an<br />

electric aderon trim system. This minor modifica<br />

tion to the STA control system will take approximately<br />

The second S’IA. scheduled for delivery to <strong>NASA</strong><br />

in late <strong>July</strong>, will remain at Bethpage for continuation<br />

of the /light test program to insure that the<br />

various landing flight modes of the orbiter can be<br />

duplicated by the STA.<br />

The remaining flight tests will concentrate on ~erifying<br />

the STA’s ability to match the Shuttle orbiter<br />

trajectol5’ during the period front 35,000 feet<br />

through touchdown and verifying several recent<br />

engineering changes.<br />

Irraje~:tory matching is accomplished by using<br />

thrust reverser engines and dire,et lift control to vary<br />

the Gnlfstream 11 aerodynamics to provide flight<br />

characteristics similar to the Shuttle orbiter.<br />

Areas of potential include electrical power generation<br />

and unique manufacturing processes which can<br />

only be done in the weightlessness of space, or can<br />

be done far better in space than on Earth.<br />

Prospective activities include the manufacture of<br />

materials, chemicals and medicines, development of<br />

new materials and processes, new communications<br />

industry, weather services, new Earth resources<br />

development, ultimately the movement of people to<br />

space for tourism or medica] purposes and the<br />

e~,entual industrialization ol the btoon<br />

The proposed work is divided into two phases.<br />

each requiring about 8 monI:hs and the contracts<br />

will cost an estimated $200,000 each. Requests for<br />

proposals were issued by the MarshaIl Center with<br />

proposals due June 20 Contracts will be awarded<br />

this lall<br />

of a deceased member, at a time when it is most<br />
