Demography
The Gjirokastra region is located at the southeastern
most point of Albania. It borders the Albanian
regions of Fier, Korca, and Vlora, with Greece
sitting to the east and southeast. The total surface
area of the region is approximately 332,677 hectares,
or 2,880 square kilometers, whereby the Vsoja River
and the Drino River pass through its entirety. The
region has a typically Mediterranean climate where
the winters are generally marked by rainfall and the
summers are often plagued by drought.
The region is organized in 3 districts, composed of 6
municipalities and 26 communes (population of
166,788), whereby the majority of residents live rurally:

The district of Gjirokastra has 2 municipalities and
11 communes (population 80,898);
The district of Tepelena has 2 municipalities and 8
communes (population 46,879); and
The district of Permet has 2 municipalities and 7
communes (population 39,011). 39
The administrative center of the region is the city
of Gjirokastra. There, the Regional Council is
the highest decision-making body and is comprised
of 43 members, 6 of whom are mayors,
26 are commune heads, and 11 are members
representing the municipality and commune
councils.
