Gentlemen :
Pursuant to your request in your letter dated 1 November 1989, Rockwell
international Corporation, Rocketdyne Division (Rocketdyne) submits the
following outline of additional information on Santa Susana Fiel d
Laboratory underground tanks :

. A total of five'underground tanks have been removed from Building
055 . On 21 February 1986 a 1,000 gallon diesel fuel tank was
removed under a Ventura County Environmental Health Department
(VCEHO) permit . Upon removal it was observed that there were hole s
in the tank and an uncontrolled release had'occurred . Initial
samples indicated contamination of 1 .1 to 1 .3 percent diesel fuel by
weight . After remedial-work was performed samples collected
indicated results ranging from 0 .001 to 0 .006 percent diesel fuel by
weight . Approximately 45 yards of contaminated soil was transported
to Casmalia for landfill on 21 May 1986 .
The additional four underground tanks were radioactive waste holdup
tanks of 1 :85, 230 and two 1,000 gallons in size . These tanks were
removed with the decommissioning of the interim status Nuclear
Material Development Facility (NMDF) . With the concurrence of the
U .S . Nuclear Regulatory Commission the license for the facility was
terminated and the area released for unrestricted use . No
additional tanks have been found to exist at Building 055 . (See
Enclosure 1 )
2 . On 2 October 1986 a 500 gallon diesel fuel tank was removed under
VCEHD permit #424 at Building 020 . Initial samples indicated
contamination of 0 .3 percent diesel fuel by weight . Remedial work
