Gentlemen :<br />
Pursuant to your request in your letter dated 1 November 1989, Rockwell<br />
international Corporation, Rocketdyne Division (Rocketdyne) submits the<br />
following o<strong>ut</strong>line of additional information on Santa Susana Fiel d<br />
Laboratory <strong>underground</strong> <strong>tank</strong>s :<br />

. A total of five'<strong>underground</strong> <strong>tank</strong>s have been removed from Building<br />
055 . On 21 February 1986 a 1,000 gallon diesel fuel <strong>tank</strong> was<br />
removed under a Ventura County Environmental Health Department<br />
(VCEHO) permit . Upon <strong>removal</strong> it was observed that there were hole s<br />
in the <strong>tank</strong> and an uncontrolled release had'occurred . Initial<br />
samples indicated contamination of 1 .1 to 1 .3 percent diesel fuel by<br />
weight . After remedial-work was performed samples collected<br />
indicated results ranging from 0 .001 to 0 .006 percent diesel fuel by<br />
weight . Approximately 45 yards of contaminated soil was transported<br />
to Casmalia for landfill on 21 May 1986 .<br />
The additional four <strong>underground</strong> <strong>tank</strong>s were radioactive waste holdup<br />
<strong>tank</strong>s of 1 :85, 230 and two 1,000 gallons in size . These <strong>tank</strong>s were<br />
removed with the de<strong>com</strong>missioning of the interim status Nuclear<br />
Material Development Facility (NMDF) . With the concurrence of the<br />
U .S . Nuclear Regulatory Commission the license for the facility was<br />
terminated and the area released for unrestricted use . No<br />
additional <strong>tank</strong>s have been found to exist at Building 055 . (See<br />
Enclosure 1 )<br />
2 . On 2 October 1986 a 500 gallon diesel fuel <strong>tank</strong> was removed under<br />
VCEHD permit #424 at Building 020 . Initial samples indicated<br />
contamination of 0 .3 percent diesel fuel by weight . Remedial work<br />

present during the <strong>tank</strong> abandonment . On 20 and 29 October 1986, .4 . . .<br />
