How will you be
remembered?

Perhaps It IS because I am gettmg older and am more
aware of my own mortahty, but I find the obItuary p,lge of
the newspaper very fascInatmg to read
It IS mterestmg to note what the per~ons \\ ho died are
remembered for
In almost any edItion of our area's papel s we can find notIces
are about people who WIll never be noted III any hIstory
books - people hke you and me
There IS a kind of parlor game known as the obItuary
game It sounds morbId, but It IS not The object IS for the
players to state what they would hke to have dppem about
them In the newspaper or on their gravestones The other
players are to eIther affirm the chOIce, question It, 01 to
suggest an alternative
When played With some senousness, the game can be
quite revealIng It ISa way of thmk1l1g about one's values,
dreams and goals for the days that remam It reqUIres a
statement of that which gives meanmg to a hfe, a nanung
of the center by which a lIfe IS shaped and hved It reqUIres
something hke' "he helped those In need" or "she was active
In church and chantable affairs" 01' "he was known for
generosIty and sound advice"
Obltuanes cannot adequately measure a hfetlme, but
they do say somethlllg about how we pelcelved oW'selves
and how we are perceIved by others
(I think I mIght hke to be remembered as "a personable
pastor With a sense of humor ")
The questIOn IS' How would my 01' yoUI'obituary look If It
were publIshed tomorrow? That might suggest a kind of
negative ego tnp, but It IS not meant to be such What IS
ImplIed IS, What WIll my obltuarv be before God and before
history?
Does my true Inner hfe show In a meanmgful way? Have
I contnbuted In some small way to the welfare of the world
of which I am a part? Do I hve my lIfe In a fully human
manner? WIll It be sald that I loved God by lOVingas many
persons as I was capable? Are there some thIngs m my I1fe
that need changing? Are my actIOns rooted In love and ethics
or In convemence and selfishness?
How WIllyou and I be remembered? Will we at least be
remembered as someone who honestly tned?
