An exploration of educational practice applied to<br />

young children from birth to age six: historical and<br />

philosophical perspectives; contemporary issues; social,<br />

emotional and physical needs of young children;<br />

professional and ethical responsibilities of working<br />

with children; role of teaching in learning through play;<br />

teaching strategies; organization and planning; child<br />

guidance; communication and working with children<br />

in the context of family and community; and creation<br />

of safe, healthy environments. Includes observations of<br />

early childhood programs.<br />

eCS 130 > Curriculum Development and Methods<br />

3 CREDIT HouRS • lECTURE: 3 HOURS<br />

A focus on active learning of young children from birth<br />

to six years of age. Design, planning, implementing,<br />

observation, and assessment of developmentally appropriate<br />

curriculum including such activities as art,<br />

music, language development, science, creative movement,<br />

and dramatics to contribute to positive emotional,<br />

cognitive, physical, social, and creative growth. Each<br />

student will design and present a project that demonstrates<br />

the core principles of an Early Childhood curriculum.<br />

Prerequisite: ECS 105 with a Grade of C or better.<br />

eCS 205 > Field Experience: Early Childhood<br />

3 CREDIT HouRS • lECTURE: 3 HOURS<br />

A supervised field experience for a minimum of 120<br />

hours in an early childhood setting. Opportunity to<br />

plan, implement, observe, record, and evaluate programs<br />

and children. Weekly seminar allows students<br />

to share and explore fieldwork experiences.<br />

Prerequisite: ECS 105 with a Grade of C or better.<br />

eCo 201 > Principles of Economics I - (Macro)<br />

3 CREDIT HouRS • lECTURE: 3 HOURS<br />

An examination of the modern mixed economic system;<br />

introduction to economic issues and the basic<br />

principles of methods of economics; course focuses on<br />

macroeconomics principles: economic growth, inflation,<br />

unemployment, the business cycle, the financial<br />

system, international capital flows and trade, the banking<br />

system and monetary and fiscal policy. Applications<br />

to current policy issues in the American economy<br />

will be emphasized throughout. Second-year students<br />

preferred.<br />

eCo 202 > Principles of Economics II - (Micro)<br />

3 CREDIT HouRS • lECTURE: 3 HOURS<br />

A micro economic analysis of the basic market forces<br />

of supply and demand; the price mechanism, utility<br />

maximization by consumers, profit maximization by<br />

firms in competitive and non competitive markets. Introduction<br />

to an examination of current national economic<br />

issues involving the pricing principles of this<br />

discipline. Second-year students preferred.<br />

An introduction to the historical, sociological and philosophical<br />

foundations of education. Requires students<br />

to examine the social purposes of education in historical<br />

and contemporary contexts; engage in the study of<br />

education through the academic disciplines of sociology,<br />

history, and philosophy; examine the significance<br />

of social differences (class, culture, race/ethnicity, gender,<br />

sexual orientation, religion) for education; develop<br />

and express a personal philosophy of education; and<br />

examine the relationship of schooling to democratic<br />

practices and principles. Prerequisites: ENG 101 with a<br />

Grade of C or better or ENG 100B with a Grade of C or better.<br />
