A study and performance of guitar ensemble literature<br />

representing a variety of styles. Students who earn a C<br />

or above may continue by registration for credit. Prerequisites:<br />

Students must be able to read music beyond<br />

chord symbols and have previous guitar playing experience.<br />

muS 160 > History of Rock Music<br />

3 CREDIT HouRS • lECTURE: 3 HOURS<br />

beginning with an analysis of the styles that influenced<br />

rock music, this class will survey the styles from the<br />

1950s to the 1980s. The class will emphasize the historical<br />

context of each style and analyze some of the<br />

music elements that have come to define it. (Rhythm,<br />

texture, meter, instrumentation, harmony...)<br />

muS 190 > Digital Sound Recording Studio I<br />

3 CREDIT HouRS • lECTURE: 2 HOURS | lAb: 3 HOURS<br />

This course is a lecture plus hands-on course in understanding<br />

medium of recorded sound through three key<br />

perspectives: designing a recording studio (including<br />

the selection and use of equipment), following the signal<br />

path from recording through the mixing and mastering<br />

phase, and producing a physical sound for the<br />

target listener. This course is open to both music and<br />

non-music majors. The course cannot be used towards<br />

major requirements of the music A.S. degree.<br />

muS 202 > Topics in Music Seminar<br />

3 CREDIT HouRS • lECTURE: 3 HOURS<br />

The study of a specialized topic drawn from the general<br />

areas of music history and appreciation. Possible seminar<br />

topics include American music, History of Opera<br />

and musical Theater and History of Popular music and<br />

Jazz. may be repeated for credit with change of topic.<br />

muS 203 > The Music Business<br />

3 CREDIT HouRS • lECTURE: 3 HOURS<br />

A course intended for students with some formal background<br />

in music who wish to study the business of music,<br />

including merchandising and the commercial aspects<br />

of music. Publishing, retailing, arts management,<br />

recording industry, and copyright laws are addressed.<br />

muS 219 > Aural Skills III<br />

1 CREDIT HouR • lAb: 2 HOURS<br />

A continuation of Aural Skills I-II dealing with more advanced<br />

aspects of sight-singing, melodic, rhythmic and<br />

harmonic dictation, and keyboard skills. Prerequisites:<br />

MUS 120 and MUS 125 and MUS 126 and MUS 128.<br />

muS 220 > Aural Skills IV<br />

1 CREDIT HouR • lAb: 2 HOURS<br />

A continuation of mus 219. Prerequisites: MUS 120 and<br />

MUS 125 and MUS 126 and MUS 128 and MUS 219.<br />

muS 224 > Music Theory III<br />

2 CREDIT HouRS • lECTURE: 2 HOURS<br />

A continuation of music Theory I-II dealing with more<br />

advanced aspects of harmony; includes borrowed<br />

chords, altered chords, ninth, eleventh and thirteenth<br />

chords, and modulations to foreign keys. Prerequisites:<br />

MUS 120 and MUS 125 and MUS 126 and MUS 128.<br />

muS 225 > Music Theory IV<br />

2 CREDIT HouRS • lECTURE: 2 HOURS<br />

A continuation of mus 224. Prerequisites: MUS 120 and<br />

MUS 125 and MUS 126 and MUS 128 and MUS 224.<br />

muS 288 > Comp Music Notation & MIDI Sequencing<br />

3 CREDIT HouRS • lECTURE: 3 HOURS<br />

Students use the mIDI controller (piano keyboard) acquire<br />

the necessary skills for creating and printing publisher<br />

quality musical arrangements for any grouping of<br />

instruments or voices using the Sibelius music notation<br />

application. The course then explores the concepts of<br />

techniques of mIDI (musical Instrument Digital Interface)<br />

technology using virtual instruments to record<br />

(on the Sonar application) their previous notation projects<br />

onto finished CDs. This course is designed for music<br />

students with at least one year of music theory in<br />

addition to fundamental piano skills. Prerequisites: MUS<br />

124 & MUS 125, MUS 115 & MUS 116, or MUS 117 & 118, or<br />

permission of instructor.<br />
