VRIENDE VAN DIE MICHAELIS-VERSAMELING / ZIHLOBO YA-MICHAELIS COLLECTION<br />

The Friends of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong>, was established <strong>in</strong> 1993.<br />

Its objective is to stimulate active <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Collection</strong> and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iziko</strong> Old Town House, <strong>the</strong> Museum dedicated to it.<br />

<strong>Excit<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Revelation</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong><br />

The portrait of Theodorus Bas Jacobi, recently confirmed as<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g pa<strong>in</strong>ted by Jacob Adriaensz Backer.<br />

The pa<strong>in</strong>ter Jacob Adriaensz Backer (1608-1651), one<br />

of Rembrandt’s more illustrious competitors <strong>in</strong><br />

17th-century Amsterdam, was a sought-after and highly<br />

fashionable artist <strong>in</strong> his own day. However, history was<br />

not k<strong>in</strong>d to him. Eclipsed by <strong>the</strong> decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong><br />

Dutch pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 18th century, and <strong>the</strong> stellar rise<br />

to fame of Rembrandt <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mid-19th century, Backer<br />

Draw<strong>in</strong>g after Jacob Backer’s portrait of Theodorus Bas<br />

Jacobi by Jan Thopas, c. 1630s. Black chalk on vellum, Jan<br />

Six F<strong>in</strong>e Art, Amsterdam.<br />

has only very recently re-entered <strong>the</strong> limelight. This after<br />

nearly 400 years of obscurity. His re-emergence<br />

is <strong>the</strong> result of <strong>the</strong> first-ever major exhibition of his<br />

works. Entitled Jacob Backer: Rembrandt’s Opposite, <strong>the</strong><br />

exhibition was mounted <strong>in</strong> 2008 - 2009 at Amsterdam’s<br />

Rembrandt House Museum and Aachen’s Suermondt-<br />

Ludwig-Museum. About 120 of Backer’s pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs are

Banner proclaim<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Backer exhibition at Rembrandt House, (above, left); details of <strong>the</strong> face (above, right) and right hand<br />

hold<strong>in</strong>g gloves (below, left). Backer’s ref<strong>in</strong>ed and elegant style is much <strong>in</strong> evidence.<br />

known to have survived. After centuries shrouded<br />

<strong>in</strong> mystery, a male portrait <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong><br />

has now been identified as a genu<strong>in</strong>e Backer.<br />

Our pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g (left), identified for centuries as<br />

Portrait of Man by an “unknown artist”, was <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> impressive gift of Dutch and Flemish pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

presented to South Africa by Sir Max <strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

1914. Orig<strong>in</strong>ally oval <strong>in</strong> shape, <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g had<br />

been subjected to rel<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 19th century and<br />

reconfigured as a portrait-format rectangle. Until 2011<br />

<strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g’s authorship has been disputed and<br />

unresolved; some scholars attribut<strong>in</strong>g it to Johannes<br />

Verspronck and o<strong>the</strong>rs only tentatively to Backer,<br />

although <strong>the</strong> latter op<strong>in</strong>ion was at one time dismissed.<br />

It was also proposed, because of its ref<strong>in</strong>ed and elegant<br />

style, that <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g was by a Flemish pa<strong>in</strong>ter and not<br />

even Dutch at all.<br />

Peter van den Br<strong>in</strong>k, one of <strong>the</strong> four curators<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> recent Backer exhibition, has now f<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

attributed <strong>the</strong> <strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong> portrait to <strong>the</strong> artist.<br />

He has also identified its bearded sitter as Theodorus<br />

Bas Jacobi, a well-to-do resident of Amsterdam <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

mid-to-late 1630s. These revelations have been made<br />

possible by <strong>the</strong> discovery of a copy of <strong>the</strong> portrait made<br />

<strong>in</strong> black chalk made by <strong>the</strong> artist Jan Thopas (right).<br />

This draw<strong>in</strong>g surfaced on <strong>the</strong> Dutch art market <strong>in</strong> 1997,<br />

and is now owned by Jan Six F<strong>in</strong>e Art, a famous Old<br />

Master dealership <strong>in</strong> Amsterdam. Exam<strong>in</strong>ations of closeup<br />

photographs of <strong>the</strong> face and hand of our pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />

have now conv<strong>in</strong>ced Van den Br<strong>in</strong>k, now expertlyacqua<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

with many of Backer’s best works, that our<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>in</strong>deed by <strong>the</strong> artist himself. From <strong>the</strong> little<br />

that we know about Backer from <strong>the</strong> archives, he seems<br />

to have been a stylish gentleman who contrasted <strong>in</strong><br />

almost every respect with Rembrandt. He was respected<br />

by everyone; he never married, he never bought a house,<br />

and he never became embroiled <strong>in</strong> legal squabbles. The<br />

firm attribution of a very f<strong>in</strong>e Old Master pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong> to him is truly someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to celebrate. Jacob Backer is a new and excit<strong>in</strong>g art<br />

historical discovery who was clearly one of <strong>the</strong> most<br />

accomplished pa<strong>in</strong>ters of <strong>the</strong> Dutch Golden Age.<br />

by Hayden Proud, Curator of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong>. n

<strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong> Receives<br />

Em<strong>in</strong>ent Visitor<br />

(From left) Dr Mariët Westermann, curator Hayden Proud and conservator Angela Zehnder.<br />

Dr Mariët Westermann, former Director of <strong>the</strong><br />

Institute of F<strong>in</strong>e Arts <strong>in</strong> New York, a renowned<br />

scholar of 17th-century Dutch art and present Vice-<br />

President of <strong>the</strong> Andrew Mellon Foundation, was<br />

welcomed at <strong>the</strong> Old Town House and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iziko</strong><br />

<strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong> this past March. It was her<br />

first-ever visit to South Africa, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Michaelis</strong><br />

<strong>Collection</strong> was on <strong>the</strong> top of her list of places to<br />

visit <strong>in</strong> Cape Town. Her keen eye was especially<br />

taken by our f<strong>in</strong>e pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g by Jan Steen (1626-1679)<br />

which she already knew well from reproductions.<br />

Jan Steen’s work was <strong>the</strong> focus of her PhD at New<br />

York University, which culm<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>in</strong> her publication<br />

entitled The Amusements of Jan Steen: Comic Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Seventeenth Century. Dr Westermann is <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> author of one of <strong>the</strong> most widely-read books on<br />

Dutch pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g: A Worldly Art: The Dutch Republic,<br />

1585-1718, which has been published <strong>in</strong> many<br />

editions. Her dist<strong>in</strong>ctions as a curator <strong>in</strong>clude Art and<br />

Home: Dutch Interiors <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Age of Rembrandt (Denver<br />

and Newark Art <strong>Museums</strong>) and she was also <strong>the</strong><br />

co-curator with Alejandro Vergara of <strong>the</strong> successful<br />

exhibition Vermeer and <strong>the</strong> Dutch Interior at <strong>the</strong> Prado<br />

<strong>in</strong> Madrid. Dr Westermann was keen to learn more<br />

about <strong>the</strong> Dutch and Flemish works <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> collection<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iziko</strong> South African National Gallery and<br />

also visited our conservation studio to see work <strong>in</strong><br />

progress be<strong>in</strong>g undertaken by Angela Zehnder.

OLD MASTER MEETS<br />

YOUNG MASTER<br />

A heartwarm<strong>in</strong>g film entitled Anathi Tyawa: A Pa<strong>in</strong>ter<br />

from Khayelitsha (2011), made by Lena Boda, can now<br />

be viewed free of charge <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Frans Hals Room at <strong>the</strong><br />

Old Town House/<strong>Iziko</strong> <strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong>. Anathi has<br />

been a student at <strong>the</strong> Frank Joubert Art Centre <strong>in</strong> Rondebosch<br />

and has also been nurtured <strong>in</strong> his studies via <strong>the</strong><br />

Ibhabhathane (“Butterfly” <strong>in</strong> Xhosa) Project . Through<br />

<strong>the</strong>m he was <strong>in</strong>troduced to <strong>the</strong> complexities and unique<br />

possibilities of oil pa<strong>in</strong>t as a medium of pa<strong>in</strong>terly expression.<br />

The expense of imported oil colours has tended<br />

to render <strong>the</strong>m out of reach for many aspirant artists<br />

from disadvantaged communities. The film shows<br />

how Anathi has related to <strong>the</strong> oil pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iziko</strong><br />

<strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong>, how he feels about <strong>the</strong> <strong>Collection</strong>,<br />

as well as <strong>the</strong> reactions of his own community to his<br />

dream of becom<strong>in</strong>g an artist. The film can be viewed <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> context of <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al Portrait of a Woman by Frans<br />

Hals, dated 1644, which <strong>in</strong>spired Anathi’s own reworked<br />

version, which he has made <strong>in</strong>to an affectionate portrait<br />

of his mo<strong>the</strong>r. Our special thanks to Col<strong>in</strong> Stevens of <strong>the</strong><br />

Ibhabathane Project for present<strong>in</strong>g a copy of this film to<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Iziko</strong> <strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong>.<br />

FURNITURE<br />

CONSERVATION<br />

PROJECT<br />

Much-needed conservation work on <strong>the</strong> furniture <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong> is about to be be undertaken,<br />

thanks to a generous <strong>in</strong>jection of R10,000.00 to launch<br />

this process by <strong>the</strong> Friends. It is hoped that a small<br />

number of items can be treated each year. The Friends<br />

generously supported <strong>the</strong> restoration of a major item -<br />

a 17th-century cupboard some years ago. <strong>Iziko</strong> Social<br />

History will also be treat<strong>in</strong>g certa<strong>in</strong> items that <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong> has on loan.

Visit<strong>in</strong>g Czech musician Edita Keglerova from Prague at <strong>the</strong> harpsichord.<br />

TWO “STARRY NIGHTS” AT THE<br />

IZIKO OLD TOWN HOUSE<br />

Two special even<strong>in</strong>gs of chamber music concerts arranged<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Friends of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong> recently<br />

attracted capacity audiences at <strong>the</strong> Old Town House.<br />

For young and old alike, <strong>the</strong> venue is grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> popularity<br />

among music-lovers <strong>in</strong> Cape Town for <strong>the</strong> quality<br />

of <strong>the</strong> programmes and <strong>the</strong> calibre of <strong>the</strong> performers that<br />

are play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re, thanks to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiatives of members of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Friends’ Council.<br />

Two visit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternational stars were ably supported<br />

by several local musicians <strong>in</strong> programmes of <strong>the</strong> highlycomplex<br />

yet delightful counterpo<strong>in</strong>t compositions<br />

from <strong>the</strong> very same period – <strong>the</strong> Baroque era of <strong>the</strong><br />

1600s - when <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong><br />

were made. The Czech harpsichordist Edita Keglerova<br />

from Prague was <strong>the</strong> star of <strong>the</strong> first concert, which was<br />

sponsored by <strong>the</strong> Czech Embassy <strong>in</strong> South Africa. She<br />

played on an elaborate harpsichord which was a literal<br />

work of art <strong>in</strong> itself, built here <strong>in</strong> Cape Town by a Dutchborn<br />

craftsman. The second concert featured Anto<strong>in</strong>ette<br />

Lohmann, <strong>the</strong> famous Dutch viol<strong>in</strong>ist from Amsterdam,<br />

whose visit was sponsored by <strong>the</strong> Van Ewijck Foundation.<br />

Lohmann played us<strong>in</strong>g an antique viol<strong>in</strong> and a<br />

viola that have both survived from <strong>the</strong> very same period.

The 17th-century<br />

Dutch Interior :<br />

fact or fantasy?<br />

by Hayden Proud<br />

Curator : <strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong> at<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Iziko</strong> Old Town House.

Introduction<br />

The year 2010/11 has not <strong>in</strong> every<br />

respect been an entirely satisfactory<br />

one for <strong>the</strong> Friends of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Michaelis</strong><br />

<strong>Collection</strong>. By <strong>the</strong> same token,<br />

five months later, your Committee<br />

can report signs both of renewed<br />

activity by <strong>the</strong> Committee itself and<br />

of <strong>in</strong>terest and participation from<br />

<strong>the</strong> side of <strong>the</strong> public.<br />

The slump <strong>in</strong> activity by and for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Friends last year undoubtedly<br />

had to do with <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong><br />

Permanent <strong>Collection</strong>, <strong>the</strong> oldmaster<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs that form <strong>the</strong><br />

raison-d’être of <strong>the</strong> museum <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Old Town House, were not on<br />

its walls at all for most of <strong>the</strong> year.<br />

This was <strong>the</strong> result of <strong>the</strong> decision<br />

by <strong>Iziko</strong> – s<strong>in</strong>ce some ten years ago our over-arch<strong>in</strong>g<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stitution – to use all its halls for two temporary<br />

exhibitions, The Lie of <strong>the</strong> Land (featur<strong>in</strong>g landscape art<br />

and curated by Prof. Michael Godby) and Home and<br />

Away (art of a political nature, curated by Carol Brown).<br />

Both exhibitions were of undoubted <strong>in</strong>terest. To <strong>the</strong><br />

fund<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> first-mentioned <strong>the</strong> Friends <strong>in</strong> fact made<br />

a substantial contribution, and for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r one <strong>the</strong>y<br />

organized a walk-about by its curator. But <strong>the</strong> prolonged<br />

absence of <strong>the</strong> Permanent <strong>Collection</strong> caused much<br />

concern among our local support group – as well as<br />

dismay from <strong>the</strong> side of many visitors from elsewhere.<br />

In subsequent discussions with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iziko</strong> management,<br />

it was agreed that such special, temporary exhibitions<br />

should rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> exception, ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> rule, and<br />

that such exhibitions should not necessitate <strong>the</strong> removal<br />

of <strong>the</strong> entire Permanent <strong>Collection</strong>.<br />

Activities<br />

FRIENDS OF THE MICHAELIS COLLECTION<br />

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT<br />

Despite this temporary set-back, activities cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

to be held <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Old Town House, altough a few had<br />

to cancelled because of a lack of <strong>in</strong>terest. Among those<br />

that were successful were three walk-abouts of <strong>the</strong><br />

two special exhibitions, two most <strong>in</strong>formative lectures<br />

(on artist/architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser by<br />

Truida Pekel, and on <strong>the</strong> Seasons <strong>in</strong> Medieval M<strong>in</strong>iature<br />

Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g by Tia Hugo), and a “Rehang<strong>in</strong>g Party” to<br />

celebrate <strong>the</strong> return of <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> Permanent<br />

<strong>Collection</strong>, as rehung most <strong>in</strong>ventively by curator<br />

Hayden Proud under <strong>the</strong> title “Baroque meets Modern”.<br />

1 APRIL 2010 – 31 MARCH 2011<br />

FMC Chairman Dr. Hans Fransen.<br />

Educational programmes<br />

are always on-go<strong>in</strong>g, and were<br />

especially <strong>in</strong>tensive dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Lie of <strong>the</strong> Land exhibition, when<br />

learners as well as teachers were<br />

targeted with <strong>the</strong> cooperation<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Ibhabhathane Project, <strong>the</strong><br />

Joan St. Leger L<strong>in</strong>dbergh Trust,<br />

<strong>the</strong> National Arts Council and <strong>the</strong><br />

West. Cape Department of Cultural<br />

Affairs and Sport.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r supportive activities<br />

Although <strong>the</strong> Friends always try to<br />

keep a substantial f<strong>in</strong>ancial nestegg<br />

<strong>in</strong> order to be <strong>in</strong> a position to<br />

support larger projects, <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

been able to contribute to several<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>gful causes related to <strong>the</strong><br />

museum and its activities and<br />

<strong>in</strong>terests. They funded part of <strong>the</strong> cost of <strong>the</strong> catalogue<br />

of <strong>the</strong> exhibition The Lie of <strong>the</strong> Land by Prof. Michael<br />

Godby, <strong>the</strong>reby demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>y do support<br />

special, temporary exhibitions. They also f<strong>in</strong>anced <strong>the</strong><br />

restoration of <strong>the</strong> bust of Sir Max <strong>Michaelis</strong> by Moses<br />

Kottler over <strong>the</strong> founta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> courtyard.<br />

The <strong>Iziko</strong> Old Town House<br />

After quite a protracted period of renovations, <strong>the</strong><br />

Old Town House is once aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> prime condition.<br />

Damp problems <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> left lower anteroom were<br />

dealt with, disabled access was improved by <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>stallation of a lift (no easy job <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> heart of an old<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g!), by remov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> steps <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Burg Street<br />

entrance to <strong>the</strong> Courtyard, and by a handrail on <strong>the</strong><br />

steps <strong>in</strong> front. Light<strong>in</strong>g and ultra-violet protection<br />

were much improved upstairs. Regrettably, we were<br />

<strong>in</strong>formed that fire regulations prevent <strong>the</strong> presence of<br />

more than twenty-five persons upstairs at any given<br />

time. This rules out <strong>the</strong> use of <strong>the</strong> spendid panelled<br />

Frans Hals Room, reputed to have <strong>the</strong> best chambermusic<br />

accoustics <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> City. Still to be satisfactorily<br />

resolved is <strong>the</strong> problem with <strong>the</strong> stair-well dome, so<br />

that pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs can be hung <strong>the</strong>re. The Friends have<br />

also expressed <strong>the</strong>ir desire to see <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>in</strong>t Room re<strong>in</strong>stalled<br />

where, until <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>corporation of <strong>the</strong> Museum<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iziko</strong> group, a permanent display could be seen,<br />

<strong>in</strong> specially designed cab<strong>in</strong>ets, of <strong>the</strong>matic selections<br />

from <strong>the</strong> superb hold<strong>in</strong>gs of works on paper, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dozens of Rembrandt etch<strong>in</strong>gs.

Acknowledgements<br />

This report would be <strong>in</strong>complete without acknowledg<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> assistance of a number of people. S<strong>in</strong>ce its <strong>in</strong>ception<br />

seventeen years ago, <strong>the</strong> Friends have been blessed with<br />

a sterl<strong>in</strong>g Committee. Without its <strong>in</strong>defatigable Secretary,<br />

Col<strong>in</strong> Stevens, <strong>the</strong> Friends would simply not have been<br />

able to function at all. Tony Fagrew has kept a close re<strong>in</strong><br />

on our f<strong>in</strong>ances. And Helen B<strong>in</strong>ckes, Shirley Kellner<br />

and Barnaba Golek helped <strong>in</strong> many different ways,<br />

as ‘”front-of-<strong>the</strong>-house”, refreshment manager or barkeeper.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> year Liesl Hartman, Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal of <strong>the</strong><br />

Frank Joubert Art Centre accepted our <strong>in</strong>vitation to jo<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> committee.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> side of <strong>Iziko</strong>, we have ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed an<br />

excellent work<strong>in</strong>g relationship with <strong>the</strong> Curator of<br />

Historical Art, Hayden Proud, <strong>in</strong> whose concerns <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong> occupies a very special place and<br />

whose attendance at our Committee meet<strong>in</strong>gs is much<br />

appreciated. We also value <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest by <strong>Iziko</strong>’s new<br />

Chief Executive Officer, Rooksana Omar, and its Director<br />

of Art <strong>Collection</strong>s, Riason Naidoo.<br />

To <strong>the</strong> security staff of <strong>the</strong> Old Town House,<br />

especially Barbara Hendricks, we owe a vote of thanks<br />

for <strong>the</strong>ir will<strong>in</strong>g assistance after-hours dur<strong>in</strong>g our<br />

special events. Last but not least I must commend<br />

Beulah Lombard, owner/manager of <strong>the</strong> Scotch<br />

Coffee Shop garden restaurant, for <strong>the</strong> good cheer<br />

and excellent service she provides, and for <strong>the</strong> lov<strong>in</strong>g<br />

care she lavishes on <strong>the</strong> flower and herb beds <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

courtyard. Thank you all for contribut<strong>in</strong>g to mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Old Town House not just an<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g museum, but also a very pleasant place to<br />

visit.<br />

Future<br />

After a fairly quiet period late last year <strong>the</strong> Friends,<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> months follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> year covered by this<br />

report, are show<strong>in</strong>g signs not only of renewed activity,<br />

but also of unprecedented support by <strong>the</strong> public. The<br />

concerts presented s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n have been over-subscribed,<br />

and several educational activities are be<strong>in</strong>g planned. The<br />

Friends, <strong>in</strong> cooperation with <strong>Iziko</strong>, are also plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

publication of a new brochure/catalogue to replace <strong>the</strong><br />

1995 book that has long been out of pr<strong>in</strong>t. To achieve all<br />

this, however, <strong>the</strong> Committee needs to expand its private<br />

and corporate membership – as well as streng<strong>the</strong>n its<br />

own ranks.<br />

Thank you.<br />

This fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g postcard image of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iziko</strong> Old Town<br />

House was taken by <strong>the</strong> well-known American photgrapher<br />

Arthur Elliot, now famous for his images of life at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Cape <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> late 1800s and early 1900s. It is stamped<br />

“Union of South Africa” which possibly suggests that<br />

<strong>the</strong> image dates from 1910 or immediately <strong>the</strong>reafter.<br />

Judg<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> configuration of <strong>the</strong> central archway<br />

on <strong>the</strong> portico, it is certa<strong>in</strong>ly an image of our build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

taken just before <strong>the</strong> massive renovations and alterations<br />

carried out between 1913 and 1916 to transform it<br />

<strong>in</strong>to Cape Town’s equivalent of <strong>the</strong> Mauritshuis <strong>in</strong> The<br />

Hague. The build<strong>in</strong>g as we know, was formally handed<br />

over to <strong>the</strong> Union Government by <strong>the</strong> City of Cape<br />

Town <strong>in</strong> 1913 to be transformed <strong>in</strong>to a suitable home for<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Michaelis</strong> <strong>Collection</strong>. Of fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>terest to note is <strong>the</strong><br />

colour of <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g, which is slightly darker than <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g it.<br />

Official reports written by <strong>the</strong> Public Works Department<br />

on <strong>the</strong> condition of <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g at this time, which are<br />

THE WAY WE WERE<br />

to be found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cape Archives, rem<strong>in</strong>d us that <strong>the</strong><br />

build<strong>in</strong>g had a wooden roof and wooden floors throughout,<br />

and that all of <strong>the</strong>se fixtures were ei<strong>the</strong>r rott<strong>in</strong>g or <strong>in</strong><br />

a poor state of repair. The build<strong>in</strong>g was <strong>in</strong> fact a t<strong>in</strong>derbox<br />

that was a major fire-risk and entirely unsuitable<br />

as a repository for a major collection of valuable Old<br />

Masters. The conversion of <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g thus <strong>in</strong>volved<br />

some major eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g; <strong>the</strong> roof and first floor be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

replaced with fire-resistant concrete, while <strong>the</strong> ground<br />

floor was covered with marble. Huge logs of teak were<br />

also imported to be used to build a new stairwell and<br />

l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> former Council chamber upstairs - what was to<br />

become known as <strong>the</strong> Frans Hals Room. The <strong>Iziko</strong> Old<br />

Town House as we know it today was last subjected to<br />

a major restoration <strong>in</strong> 2003, and hopes are that a renovation<br />

of stairwell - a work of art <strong>in</strong> itself - will soon be underway.<br />

We hope to publish fur<strong>the</strong>r images of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iziko</strong><br />

Old Town House <strong>in</strong> future. If you know of any o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

early photographs of <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g, we would be pleased<br />

to hear from you.<br />
