The Premier Pork Producers’
(PPP) Quality Assurance
Scheme (QAT) will be
a national SAPPO scheme
as from next year. After
negotiations between PPP
and SAPPO, it was decided
that it is in the interest of
all pork producers to have
a national brand to assure
consumers of South African
pork’s high quality and
safety.
The PPP’s Quality Assurance Committee,
which consists of experts from
the entire value chain, will manage the
scheme for an interim period. Members
of other provinces will be co-opted on
the committee. Jacobus Hoffman, manager
of PPP who played a leading role in
creating the QAT system, explains.

Benefits
QAT certification is a guarantee to both
the consumer and retailing sector that
the producer has a consistent production
process that complies with minimum
standards and ensures high-quality pork.
QAT certification further ensures:
• that producers will meet the increasing
demand for food safety by retailers;
• savings in feed and medicine usage
through closer monitoring and avoidance
of wastage;
• that possible opportunities for improvement
in the production systems are
identified;
• that on-farm systems, practices and
documentation are audited.
