The Premier Pork Producers’<br />

(PPP) <strong>Quality</strong> Assurance<br />

Scheme (QAT) will <strong>be</strong><br />

a national SAPPO <strong>scheme</strong><br />

as from next year. After<br />

negotiations <strong>be</strong>tween PPP<br />

and SAPPO, it was decided<br />

that it is in the interest of<br />

all pork producers <strong>to</strong> have<br />

a national brand <strong>to</strong> assure<br />

consumers of S<strong>out</strong>h African<br />

pork’s high quality and<br />

safety.<br />

The PPP’s <strong>Quality</strong> Assurance Committee,<br />

which consists of experts from<br />

the entire value chain, will manage the<br />

<strong>scheme</strong> for an interim period. Mem<strong>be</strong>rs<br />

of other provinces will <strong>be</strong> co-opted on<br />

the committee. Jacobus Hoffman, manager<br />

of PPP who played a leading role in<br />

creating the QAT system, explains.<br />

Benefits<br />

QAT certification is a guarantee <strong>to</strong> both<br />

the consumer and retailing sec<strong>to</strong>r that<br />

the producer has a consistent production<br />

process that complies with minimum<br />

standards and ensures high-quality pork.<br />

QAT certification further ensures:<br />

<strong>•</strong> that producers will meet the increasing<br />

demand for food safety by retailers;<br />

<strong>•</strong> savings in feed and medicine usage<br />

through closer moni<strong>to</strong>ring and avoidance<br />

of wastage;<br />

<strong>•</strong> that possible opportunities for improvement<br />

in the production systems are<br />

identified;<br />

<strong>•</strong> that on-farm systems, practices and<br />

documentation are audited.<br />

Background<br />

pork products value chain (producers,<br />

abat<strong>to</strong>irs, processors, retailers and pig<br />
