Management cockpit simplifi es
decision making
Mercedes-AMG puts money on MIK.bis
Mercedes-AMG needed an information system for better support in
decision making in the company. Therefore, controlling set about
fi nding a BI Solution in order to be able to analyze information better
and more quickly. Having a number of different systems was costing
a lot of time and effort in data management and administration due
to double data storage, which had been used to that date. Flexibility
and speed had to be improved and the manual input as well as the
mistake rate reduced.
Due to this, the search was made for the
possibility of implementing uniform standards
in planning basics and reports. The
separation of capacity planning in the project
and cost centers should be rescinded and
an easy-to-handle authorization concept put
in place. Further requirements were that a
new solution could make it possible to:
• present changes flexiblely,
• carry out planning, presentation of actual
fi gures, comparison as well as rolling planning,
• save data states and
• realize flexible reports not only graphically
but also in Excel.
Because Controlling worked intensively
with Excel Frontend, it was an especially
important tool to them. However, MIK was
very convincing due to its simplicity and
fl exibility in addition to Excel Frontend.
Other than that, it was already in use at
the Mercedes Benz plant in Berlin. In July
2006 the fi rst applications with MIKsolution+
were started. At the end of September/
start of October 2006 Mercedes-AMG then
changed over to MIK.bis.
Comprehensive Project Controlling
Meanwhile, the complete project controlling
is displayed using the application. The 20
employees in Controlling work intensively
with the system and approx. another 100
employees according to necessity and
access rights. Planning is carried out for
things such as business expenditure in individual
projects and project leaders use
the fi nancial fi gures for analyzing projects.
On top of that, a large part of the internal
and external reporting is done with it.

By means of graphic analysis, it is possible
for Controlling to analyze errors more quikkly.
Excel Frontend is also a very fl exible
tool for creating analyses from every possible
aspect. Especially Ad-hoc enquiries
are easily realizable and explainable.
Analyses on site
Advantages for Mercedes-AMG can also
be seen in providing reports and information
in the monthly closing discussion
without long lead time. Equally of advantage
is the economic logic, which is stored
in the OLAP-Database - the currency
concept and also the various accumulation
possibilities. As a result, Controlling is able
to independently implement new themes or
changes and external consultants are not
required. With regard to planning, there
is also the very useful possibility of planning
using the tool MIK.bis.table as well as
MIK.bis.xlreport. MIK.bis.table is especially
suitable for employees who are not often involved
in planning, because functionalities
can be restricted and thereby the error rate
through entering is reduced. In contrast, it is
possible to create more complex applications
using Excel-Frontend MIK.bis.xlreport,
so that it is mainly used intensively by Controlling.
In Controlling, this has now freed up time
for analyzing because an uncountable
number of Excel fi les no longer need to be
pasted together with all the error sources
and data redundancies connected with
them. Due to there only being a single data
source, which contains planning data and
actual data, it is possible to concentrate on
the analysis and derivation of controllingrelevant
information. As a consequence,
there is more economic information available
and that being more transparent than
before.
Controlling more quickly, more simply,
more reliably.
The expansion of Controlling Performance
has lead to management being able to
make better decisions. Despite MIK.bis
being a fl exible information system, it is
also a simple information system, which
covers a wide range of requirements at the
same time. Being able to further develop
the system quickly in-house is something
which is highly valued by customers. With
MIK, controlling is able to be done more
quickly, simply and reliably – get away from
data searching and maintenance – move
into data analysis.
The Mercedes-AMG-Philosophy is: One
man, one motor – That means, one technician
of the Affalterbach Motor Manufacture
is responsible for the complete assembly of
an AMG high-performance motor: From the
fi tting of the crankshaft in the motor block,
the camshaft and the compressor through
to connecting cables and fi lling the motor
with oil. This responsibility is all documented
with the technician’s signature on a
special motor identifi cation plate specially
intended for this. Since its foundation in
1967 as a racing engine builder, the company
has continually grown, was incorporated
into the Daimler-Chrysler Group in
1999 and nowadays at the headquarters
in Affalterbach near Stuttgart there are 725
employees, who produce approx. 20,000
motors per year.
