Abstract: This congress provided a safe environment for the diversity of the pandemic to be
experienced by 11 700 delegates. Delegates were struck by the high number of persons
presenting papers that identified themselves as HIV infected. These included scientists,
clinicians and prevention workers and in many respect the role of seropositive persons in meeting
the challenge of AIDS, is both pivotal and the significant difference between the international
response to this disease compared to others. The participation of a growing number of sero-
positive persons at all levels of intervention helps to focus the response and sustains its sense of
urgency. Although this voluntary admission of infection by speakers was powerful, the congress
organisers had also seen to it that marginalised and/or oppressed populations of the world, who
