"Retirement" of
Luciene Smith
We were sad to learn recent­
. ly that Luciene had decided
to "retire" and to concentrate
her considerable talents
on other pursuits not
related to the Bar.
Luciene was a familiar
(and very attractive!) figure
at the Bar for a quarter of a
century, She did freelance
typing work for many of the
members and, no doubt, for
many of the present judges
in this division. Unfortunately
Puckrin SC rather
selfishly secured a bit of a
monopoly on her services
for most of the time, but
other members had the benefit
of her excellent work
and her sunny personality
as well.
At a recent cocktail party
the Society said goodbye to
Lucis;ne and thanked her for
her contribution, wishing
her everything of the best
for the future.
Wyle Michiel Botha se
Ons het met skok en leedwese
kennis geneem van
die skielike afsterwe van
ons gerespekteerde kollega
op 20 Mei 2000.
Michiel was nie net 'n
besondere veelsydige persoon
met wye belangstellings
en groot kundigheid
op vele terreine.
Hy was onder andere
bekend vir sy prestasies as
'n langafstand atleet. Sedert
1983 het hy die Comrades
Marathon elf keer voltooi,
en by nie minder nie as
se we geleenthede het hy 'n
silwer medalje verower. In
1985 is hy ook gekies vir
die destydse Noord­
Transvaalse Marathonspan
vir veteraanatlete en hy het
die Barbertonse Madeliefie
vir baie jare met onderskeiding
gedra gedurende interprovinsiale
byeenkomste.

In Balieverband het
Michiel meer as sy deel
gedoen. Hy het vir me er as
'n dekade gedien in die
redaksie van hierdie tydskrif.
Hy het ook gedien in
subkomitees van die Balie,
onder andere die Personeelkomitee,
waar hy 'n
leidende rol vervul het.
Michiel se organisasievermoens
was legendaries.
Of dit nou 'n besigheidsaflos
of 'n ski-vakansie was,
kon almal altyd staatmaak
daarop dat hy die reelings
tot in die fynste besonderhede
sou tref en uitvoer. Hy
het baie van die jonger kol­
en staptoere. Hy het 'n
buitengewone algemene
kennis gehad en kon onderhoudend
en met gesag praat
oor 'n groot aantal onderwerpe..
Dis bekend dat Michiel
'n baie goeie gesinsman en
'n uitstekende vader vir sy
twee dogters, Ulla en
Andrea, was.
Michiel Botha was voorwaar
'n man uit een stuk.
Hy laat 'n leemte by die
Balie wat nie maklik gevuI
sal word nie. Langs hierdie
weg word daar ook van die
geleentheid gebruik gemaak
om innige simpatie te betuig
met mev Botha, die
dogters en ander naasbestaandes
wat insluit
regter ehris Botha.

match

On 25 March 2000 Mike
Maritz SC's "has beens"
took on Goosen SC's "also
rans" at the Irene Country
Club Oval in a limited overs
match. The "has beens"
amassed a creditable 171 all
out with the main contribution
by Dirk Coetsee who
scored 70 odd. A number of
lusty blows by Gerhard
Cilliers pushed up the scoring
rate and contributed to
the respectability of the
score.
Preis se then bowled his
way into the annals of
Pretoria Bar cricketing history
by ripping the heart of
the "also rans" top order.
First to go was Van Onselen
for nought, the latter thereby
building on his unspectacular
spell of left hand
seam bowling outside the
off stump.
Goosen tried valiantly to
play a captain's innings.
However, after one characteristic
slog-hoik to rnidwicket,
he haplessly skied a
gentle full toss to the keeper.
Duminy showed plenty
of promise when umpiring:
his poker-faced refusals of
raucous appeals for LBW
indicates that this young
man has a bright future at
the Bar.
The "has beens" were
eventually dismissed for
130, Sean Mulligan contributing
a classy undefeated
half century. This was
followed by the customary
festivities. With the aid of
Bacchus the ignominious
defeats in earlier years at
the hands of the ] ohannesburg
Bar were soon forgotten.
The post-match euphoria
transmitted the following
clear message: "The
older we get, the better we
were!"
