“SOMETHING PATRICK-AL ”
“THAT!!!” READING: “Did You Hear That?”
You know ... Saint Paul’s advice to the early Church at Colossae, today’s second reading and also in his letter
to the Ephesians: “Wives, be submissive to your husbands.” Reactions to such words range from anger to gloating.
Were Paul of French descent, might his name be “Chauvin”? Is Paul a central casting “natural” as Ralph
Kramden? “Now get this straight, Alice! I am king of this castle!” [WPIX Channel 11 often re-runs Honeymooners
episodes on New Year’s Day.] Absent Archie Bunker’s bigotry, can we imagine Paul saying, “Edith, stifle yourself!”
or “Edith, get the beer!” Were Paul a Little Rascal, would he be a proud, card-carrying member of their “He-Man
Woman Haters’ Club”? More recently, the PBS British comedy series Keeping Up Appearances, featuring the
imperious airs-toting Hyacinth Bucket [“It’s pronounced ‘Boo-kay’!”]. Poor Richard ... his all-too-rare protests
fall on un-listening ears, never taken seriously nor heeded. Rarely, she reminds him, “Richard, don’t make
difficulties!” As Richard puts it, “Hyacinth drives; I just steer the car.”
“Did you hear that?” I can still picture them — a family, four children, active parishioners at Holy Name of
Mary, my first assignment. They moved to Syracuse, I think; I long ago lost track of them. Forty years later,
those children are forty or fifty something, quite possibly with children of their own. Seated at Mass one 1970s
Feast of the Holy Family, they began nudging each other as the second reading was being proclaimed, as if to
say “Did you hear that?” as Paul challenged husbands, wives, parents, and children.
What to do? Change the word “submissive”? Work on the translation some more? Edit the reading? Scratch
such “sexist” verses from Scripture? Do parents cheer “Right on!” when Paul reminds children of obedience?
Shall we think Paul a sometime “Doctor Spock” when he tells parents not to nag their children? Shall spouses,
parents, and children poke one another, as that family did in Valley Stream so many years ago — “Did you hear
that?” during today’s second reading? Do we conveniently “ignore” his words to slaves and masters, putting
aside our horror that Paul seems to “condone” the injustice of someone “owning” another person?
In both these passages in Colossians and Ephesians, Paul states a principle. In Ephesians, he writes,
“Defer to one another out of reverence for Christ”, Today in Colossians, the principle is put this way: “Because
you are God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourself with ... kindness, humility, meekness, and patience”.
Elaborating further, Paul describes these and other qualities wherein “Me first!” has no place. In such moments,
we do “submit” to one another --always in a way that is up-lifting and loving, never in a way that is abusive or
demeaning. Let’s not forget, either, Paul’s admonition, “Husbands, love your wives”. To love someone is to
submit to them in the best, most reverent sense possible - affirming that person’s God-given human dignity,
and our own.
Sometimes during a wedding homily. I mention someone saying to us, or our saying to someone else, “Just
who do you think you are? - God’s gift?” Such a question derails an ego trip, ends a chorus of “How Great I Am”.
Truth is, “Yes! I am God’s gift! And so are you!”
That reading. Paul goes further, “Whatever you do, whether in speech or in action, do it in the
name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father”. “Did you hear that?”
That reading! It makes sense only when we understand that “submissive” never means “degrading” or
“demeaning”. That reading! No mistaking, no faulting, our struggle with it. That reading! It jars our
complacency, and makes us think. Would that every word of God’s Word did just that! “Did you hear that?”
This Feast of the Holy Family, pray especially for your families and my family, as I pray for my family and
your families. Yes, they are God’s gifts — and so are we! Christ’s peace to us all this New Year!
Blessings galore!
The first reading today provides a challenging guideline
for the good stewardship of our family relationships.
How do I measure up?
Living Stewardship
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish
who embrace stewardship as a way of life. Their
relationships with family, friends and co-workers are
now different, influenced by a spirit of generosity and
sharing, which affects all aspects of their daily lives.
Hurricane Hurricane Sandy Sandy Appeal
Appeal
Thank you once again for your prayers
for those so afflicted by Hurricane Sandy
several weeks. As you may recall, your
goodness in the Special Collection [Nov.
17 & 18] on their behalf realized
$25,817.
Early in December, at its regularlyscheduled
meeting, our Parish Finance
Committee strongly recommended that we
match your response with parish funds.
Thanks to your ongoing Stewardship
generosity, we are able to do that; I happily
accepted their recommendation. We had
already sent $ 5,000 each to three parishes
in Long Beach and Island Park; we will
send an additional $10,000 to those
parishes before the end of the year.
Most importantly, please continue to
remember the people of these parishes in
your prayers, especially at this Christmas
season.
Thank you!!!
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in
American men. Over 30,000 men die from this cancer each
year. One in six men will get prostate cancer and yet, it is a
very treatable disease if detected early through a simple
blood screening test (PSA).
Eucharist for
HomeboundParishioners
Do you know someone who is homebound, perhaps a
neighbor, friend or family member?
These members of our parish community are no longer
able to join our celebration of the Eucharist. Extraordinary
Ministers of the Eucharist are available for flexible weekly
visits. Ministers visit the same parishioners during these
visits and bring both the Eucharist and a personal
connection with the larger parish community. Prior to home
visits, Ministers complete diocesan training including
guidelines for bringing the Eucharist into homes as well as
tips and suggestions from social workers; this training helps
create a spiritual and comfortable experience for all
involved.
If you know someone who would benefit form this
ministry please call Pastoral Care 385-3311 ex. 211
EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
... takes place each Monday after the 9:00 am Mass or
the last Funeral, and continues through 8:00 pm [except
holidays] Please spend some time in adoration and
prayer during the day. Exposition assumes and requires
that the Blessed Sacrament never be left unattended;
there have been times in recent weeks when
no one was in Church during Exposition.
What a wonderful opportunity is this special, gracefilled
time of prayer for our parish!
The Heart of Jesus Prayer Group meets every Friday from
9:45-11:30 am in the lower rectory meeting room. We share
prayer and praise through song, scripture and witness. Healing
prayer is available at the end of every meeting. Please
join us. For information call Marianne, 673-1031
