“SOMETHING PATRICK-AL ”
“HELP WANTED ...” “COME AS YOU ARE ....”
“Help wanted ... “ for too many among us, the painful, devastating, daily reality --resumes, interviews.
I’m not sure that the following technique would be effective, but “Once upon a time ... “, a company
advertised a job opening in its sales force; among many resumes, applications, inquiries and responses
received, one letter stood out:
“I am presently selling furniture at the store whose name and address is listed below. You may judge my ability in
sales if you stop in to see me any time [I am off on Mondays)” pretending simply to be interested in buying furniture.
When you come in, you can identify me by my red hair. I will have no way of identifying you. That way, the sales
abilities which I exhibit will be no more than my usual every-day approach, and not a special effort to impress a
potential employer.” **
The person responsible for hiring did visit the furniture store. Guess who got the job? Jesus met His first
Apostles - Peter and Andrew, James and John - two sets of brothers -fishermen - as is! — where they
were, busy at their daily toil, mending nets and repairing their boats, making ready for their next fishing
trip and its hoped-for bountiful catch. Jesus’ simple invitation, “Come and see!” — even, “Come as you are.”
John’s Gospel [1 :35-42] and other early Christian sources indicate that Andrew and John were disciples
of John the Baptist. Seeing the Baptizer say of Jesus, “Behold the Lamb of God ...”, they did just that — and
began to see who Jesus is, and what He was about.
“Come and see ... “, “Come as you are ...”, — a bit like that job applicant’s letter. No parables yet — Jesus’
wonderful stories, born of everyday living, with such challenging “hit-home” lessons. No miracles yet;
Nathanael the Apostle was from Cana; was his wedding perhaps the setting for the first of Jesus’ signs?
No hint even of what John’s Gospel would call Jesus’ “hour” — the Paschal Mystery - Jesus’ Passion,
Death, and Resurrection. For the moment, just “Come and see ...”, “Come as you are ....”
“Come as you are ...”the Apostles’ response to Jesus’ invitation would have its moments. Peter, James and
John were with Jesus at times when the others were not --even Andrew. The Apostles’ favorite indoor
sport? - arguing over which of them was most important! And when Jesus most needed them? — Judas
betrayed Him, Peter swore never to have heard of Him. And the rest? - they ran and hid; only John stood
at the foot of the Cross. Even at the first news of Jesus’ empty tomb, only Peter and John seemed able to
muster enough courage to go there. Apostles ... Hardly the “A-Team” - “the best and the brightest”, or what
firefighters would call the “front-line equipment”. Still, Jesus’ invitation: “Come and see” ... even, “Come
as you are.” One of the first things which Jesus and these first Apostles did together was go fishing — their
daily bread, their livelihood. They got the job! They caught lots of fish that first time out, the Gospels tell
us. And as for the Apostles, “Come as you are” became incredibly transformed by Jesus. Jesus invited them,
enabled them to, “Be all they wanted to be”, paraphrasing a familiar slogan, In more ways than one, as Jesus
took these Apostles fishing in more ways than one, the Apostles got hooked!
Exploring the Creed. Part 2
Last week, we looked at the opening line on the Apostles Creed: I believe in God. The Nicene Creed adds one
small but important word to this: “I believe in one one God” . So this week, we reflect simply on that one word: one.
What does it mean to say that there is one God? Its sounds simple and obvious enough. There are not many gods;
there is only one. But in fact, this simple statement can be easily misunderstood and even become the source of
wars.
When Moses encountered the presence of God in the burning bush, the name that was revealed, YHWH, was so
sacred that Jews are not even allowed to speak it. We often translate YHWH to mean “I AM” . What kind of name
is that? It tells us that God simply is. Everything has a beginning and an end, nut not God. God is Being itself.
Christians understand this to mean that God is not simply “one” as a number, but is “one” as the absolute and
total fullness of Being. God is the fullness of Love, Truth, Creative Power. God is utter fullness. This is the
“oneness” of God.
If you read the Bible, it is obvious that every nation had their own pantheon of gods. Back in the day, the
Babylonians, Canaanites, Assyrians, Persians, Egyptians etc all had their own gods that they worshipped. Israel,
likewise had its God: Yahweh. These gods were often in competition. In one of the funniest passages in the Bible,
the prophet Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal to a contest on Mt. Carmel. They have 450 prophets and he
alone is the prophet of the Lord. They are to call upon their gods to set fire to the wood of the altar- but nothing
happens. Elijah makes fun of their god suggesting that maybe he is using the bathroom or has fallen asleep or
has gone away on a journey. Elijah then soaks the wood in water to make it more difficult, but when he calls the
name of Yahweh, the wood is engulfed in flames. Now this is obviously a legendary story. Its point was that Yahweh
is the true God.
Hundreds of years later, St. Paul tried to explain to the people who created statues to the pantheon of Roman
gods that the God that they sought had actually been revealed to us in the person of Jesus Christ.
Christians believe that there is only one God and this God is the source, the ground and the goal of all
creation. Thus, wherever, love is found, God is present. Wherever, truth is found, God is present. God is the God
of love, compassion, generosity, forgiveness, truth, courage, peace, patience. Wherever these are found, we find the
presence of God. We also believe that this Love and Truth which is God has been revealed in Fullness in and
through the Trinity: the Father, creator of all, the Son, the expression of that Love in the world, the Spirit, the
ongoing power of God in the world and in human hearts.
One of the problems with the belief in one God is to think that one group has a monopoly on God. Although
Christians believe that God has revealed himself to us in the person of Jesus Christ, this does not mean that God
is absent everywhere else. The second Vatican Council teaches that God is present in the conscience of every
human being. The one God can be known somewhat in every human attempt to know and to do what is right and
good. As the Council proclaimed: “Conscience is the secret core and sanctuary of the human person where he or
she is alone with God whose voice echoes in their depths”. The Council also describes how Judaism is connected
to the one true God through the original covenant; how Islam is part of the monotheistic children of Abraham and
how other great religious traditions contain “rays of truth” which reflect the One who is the source of all Truth”.
We believe in one God. We believe in a God of fullness. We believe that we are called into that fullness. When we
live our lives fully and deeply we come to know that God a little better. This week, let’s keep our eyes open for the
God who is present in all things.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause
of cancer death in American men. Over
30,000 men die from this cancer each
year. One in six men will get prostate
cancer and yet, it is a very treatable disease
if detected early through a simple blood
screening test (PSA).
A Prostate Cancer Support and
Information Group is available to answer
your questions. We explain information
and resources available to you as you face
dealing with this disease. Emphasis is
placed on trying to help you get answers
to the wide range of personal questions
and issues that you will have. Prostate
Cancer survivors who are willing to share
their experiences with the group are
welcome. We are available by just a phone
call.
Please call Art Dignam (631 261 2583),
or John Schob (631 549 7948).
A few years ago, our parish started offering
Automated Automated Automated Automated Automated Giving Giving Giving Giving Giving as an option to parishioners
for the regular Sunday collection. Currently,
many families have signed up for this way of giving.
Many churches throughout our country are now inviting
people to use Automated Giving. One reason is the
convenience of it for the parishioner and for the Church.
Another is that it helps people to worry less about supporting
their church at times when they are not physically present
at services.
Please consdier signing up for Automated Giving. Contact
Eucharist for
HomeboundParishioners
Do you know someone who is homebound, perhaps a
neighbor, friend or family member?
These members of our parish community are no longer
able to join our celebration of the Eucharist. Extraordinary
Ministers of the Eucharist are available for flexible weekly
visits. Ministers visit the same parishioners during these
visits and bring both the Eucharist and a personal
connection with the larger parish community. Prior to home
visits, Ministers complete diocesan training including
guidelines for bringing the Eucharist into homes as well as
tips and suggestions from social workers; this training helps
create a spiritual and comfortable experience for all
involved.
If you know someone who would benefit form this
ministry please call Pastoral Care 385-3311 ex. 211
