Monday of 31 May this year saw the change of command
between the former C SANDF Gen S. Nyanda and the current C
SANDF Gen G. Ngwenya at Thaba Tshwane sports-ground. The
president Mr Thabo Mbeki with his spouse Zanele, Minister of
Defence Mosuioa Lekota, other members of parliament,
representatives of foreign missions in SA, General Officers of
the SANDF and other members of the DOD attended the occasion
which was marked by military colourful activities.
Activities for the day included; scripture reading and prayer by
the Chaplain Gen of the SANDF Brig Gen M. Cornelissen, a
massive military parade and a speech by the former C SANDF.
The SAAF demonstrated their capabilities with fly-pasts in such
a way that the sky was converted to what was phrased, “a mini
air show” by some guests.

2 Lt J.M. Thobakgale was born
in Soshanguve, one of the
townships in northern Tshwane.
It was in this township where he
completed both his primary and
secondary education. He is
married to Dineo and they have
been blessed with a son named
Itumeleng. 2 Lt Thobakgale
joined the South African Military
Health Service (SAMHS) in 1993
and did his Basic Military
Training (BMT) at SAMHS
Training Formation.
In 1994 he worked at Area Military Health Unit North West (AMHU
NW) (former North West Medical Command) as a Primary Health
Care Orderly. In 1996 he re-mustered and worked at the Radiology
department as a Supplementary Diagnostic Radiographer. In 2001 he
completed the Officers’ Formative Course. In 2003 he went (on
detachment) to the School for Military Health Training (in the HIV
section) to assist in co-ordination of HIV courses and projects, as part
of Masibambisane project. In March 2005 he was detached to Chaplain
General Division as HIV & AIDS Programme Administrator.

The above occasion took place in two phrases, outdoor activities
at the sports-field-followed by a function at the Thaba Tshwane
town hall. Light lunch was served and speeches continued with
the new C SANDF and Minister of Defence addressing the guests.
A marquee was also erected close by as the hall could not
accommodate all guests.
Apart from the Chaplain Gen who was part of the officials,
chaplains also attended this historic event.

Leadership Convention

Four officers from the Chaplain Gen HQ attended a Leadership
Convention on 8 October this year. The event was organised by The
Humphrey Mogashoa Motivational Consultancy at the National
Cultural History Museum in Pretoria, Tshwane. The theme of the
convention was “Effective Excellence Minded Leadership”. Focus was
on five main areas and they were:
• Leadership: What is it?
• Effective Leadership
• The Mind of Excellence and
• Excellence Minded Leadership
Cols (Rev) C.B. Bosiki, (Fr) B.A.M. Ndwandwe, Cplns (Dr) R.M.
Ngwanya and M.T. Masuku as attendees from the Chaplain Gen HQ
benefited from this convention and it is hoped that what they gained
will be of value to the Chaplains Service.
