FEATURES Behind the scenes in Kabul WENTY ADF personnel work at the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Headquarters, according to the Australian ISAF Embed Coordinator and Assistant to Deputy Director of ISAF Operations, SQNLDR Steve Tubby. “Australians are valued here and are employed in key operational and planning positions,” SQNLDR Tubby said. “They work in a variety of roles including strategic planning, public affairs, as the head chef of the mess, in the base gym, economic development, strategic transition and current operations.” A sailor working at the ISAF HQ gym is POPT Michael Turner. “I work with two American physical training instructors,” POPT Turner said. “We each work a seven-hour shift every day and I run two fitness classes a day and about six spin classes a week. “We have to run sign-up sheets, as they are very popular and each class is packed.” The gym POPT Turner works in is well equipped. “We have weight and abdominal rooms, a cardio theatre, 30 spin bikes and throughout the week we run badminton, volleyball, indoor soccer and touch football competitions, and run outside where we can,” POPT Turner said. “The Australian style of physical training is highly regarded here because we tend to offer more variety.” For the 20 embeds it’s not all work. ADF personnel deployed to Afghanistan are not just fighting insurgents in Uruzgan province. They are also serving in key positions at the International Security Assistance Force HQ in Kabul, assisting with the planning and running of the war. SGT Andrew Hetherington reports. SQNLDR Tubby said they had a unique recreation centre located in the ISAF compound where they could watch television, call home, use the internet and have a barbecue. “It’s called Anzac Cove and we share it with the New Zealand military posted here,” he said. “We have the best set up of most of the nations because of our small numbers and each week we have a Friday morning barbecue brunch where each Australian brings a friend from another country. “It’s a sought-after invitation and the facility is used for other functions such as farewells.” The role has been a challenge for POPT Turner and he’s gained a lot of valuable experience from his time in Kabul. “Navy physical trainers don’t get a lot of chances to deploy ashore to operational environments, so it’s good to get off a ship to do my job,” he said.
