SPORT Battle heats up for spots in rep teams By CPL Zenith King THE best Navy rugby union players will be put to the test in a bid to make the australian Services Rugby Union (aSRU) team this month and represent the aDF at the International Defence Rugby Competition (IDRC) in October. The process began on april 13 when members of the aSRU squad converged on Randwick Barracks to conduct strength and agility testing. Team hopeful POET Ryan Brook said he was happy with his performance. “I have been going to the gym heavily for the last four months and conducting some pre-season football training, so I felt prepared for the testing on the day,” he said. “Playing in the international Defence World Cup is my number one goal. They take the best from all three Services and I am really hoping to make the final squad.” The men’s nationals operations manager for aSRU, LTCOL adam Boyd, said the purpose of the day was to gain an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of aSRU prospects. “What we did at Randwick Barracks was baseline strength and conditioning testing,” he said. “We conducted three activities to test strength, including heaves, a dead lift and bench press. “We then moved outside and conducted a sprint and beep test to gauge speed and agility. “This was about their strength and conditioning off the paddock. Obviously what’s important is how they perform on the paddock, but this gave us a good indication of who was sitting at the top and who needed to do more work to be competitive.” LTCOL Boyd said this was just one of the tools being used for selection. “aSRU has put together a cam- GEARING UP: Some of the action from the 2010 giant slalom. The australian Services Rugby Championships (aSRC) will be conducted from May 15-21 at Canberra’s viking Park, Wanniassa. Men and women from the three Services will battle it out in a bid to claim the championship trophies in the respective sections. also, senior teams will be selected from serving members of the aDF. Photos: ABIS Dove Smithett Skiers eye titles Navy skiers and boarders are starting to prepare for the 2011 alpine Snowsports Championships. The season will begin with Navy Nationals held at Perisher Ski Resort from July 31 to august 6. The event is open to all Navy personnel and no racing experience is needed. The Navy’s men’s ski team will then fight to retain the trophy at the aDF Inter-Service Championships from august 7-12 at Mt Hotham.
