PERSONNEL SUPPORT: ADF supervisors of civilian personnel have a range of support services available to help them manage integrated teams effectively. ADF members who supervise Australian Public Service (APS) personnel can seek confidential advice and support through the Employee Assistance Program’s (EAP) Managers’ HotLine. Uniformed managers who have APS personnel in their teams often find that supervising civilians means following different procedures to those used when managing ADF members. For this reason, the Managers’ HotLine is available to provide a confidential telephone consulting service designed specifically for managers, including ADF supervisors of APS employees, who require practical advice about issues they are facing in the workplace. It is manned by psychologists experienced in dealing with organisational and people management issues and is accessible 24-hours a day, seven days a week on 1800 451 138. The Managers’ HotLine is a confidential and secure resource that can help managers deal with: u employees with personal issues or an employee who is underperforming; u conflict between two employees or between the manager and an employee; u an employee who is suspected of alcohol or drug abuse; u employees who are not coping with change; and u harassment issues. The EAP provides early intervention on a range of issues, including stress management, relationship and family problems, work-related concerns, bereavement, and financial or legal issues, by offering free access to professional counselling services for APS employees, their managers and their immediate family. Emergency counselling services are also available to assist with traumatic or crisis situations and are accessible either by phone or a face-to-face meeting. ADF supervisors of APS personnel are encouraged to make their staff aware that the EAP is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is used by hundreds of APS employees every month. The number is 1300 366 789 or 1300 361 008. The EAP aims to meet the needs of APS employees. Members of the ADF experiencing similar problems can contact the All Hours Support Line – a confidential telephone support service for ADF members and their families that is available 24-hours a day, seven days a week on 1800 628 036. IN BRIEF Test your bush skills DeFence personnel are being encouraged to put their navigational skills to the test in the nSW emergency Services Wilderness navigation Shield (navShield) on July 2. Teams will hike overnight through rugged terrain with a map and compass to reach as many checkpoints as possible at a “top secret” location two to three hours from Sydney. navShield organiser John Tonitto said the event offered teams the chance to test their navigational skills in a challenging environment. The event’s location will stay secret until one week before to keep the contest fair. Past events included entries from the ADF, police, ambulance, Rural Fire Service, State emergency Service and the Your crew Volunteer Rescue Association. navShield will raise money for the Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue Squad – volunteers who assist authorities searching for missing people in bushland.
