MISSION STATEMENT
At Lord Byng Secondary our goal is to provide a safe learning environment
that enables students to challenge their intellectual and creative abilities
and allows them to meet their full potential as citizens.
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE__________________________________________________
1
1Lord Byng Secondary School students and staff would like to wish all members of our community a happy holiday
season and best wishes for a prosperous new year!! The holiday break gives students and staff a chance to rest and
relax with family and friends and to get ready for the challenges and opportunities of a New Year.
Our first term is now complete. As students and parents reflect on the report cards that were distributed on
December 15 th , we encourage students, teachers, administrators, and parents to take the opportunity over the break
to “take stock” of your progress: celebrate achievements and acknowledge areas of improvement with a plan of
action. Through our goal of department and inter-department team work and collaboration we continue to make a
difference at Byng.
As I personally take stock of the year, we have much to be pleased with - highlights of key school and department
initiatives are included in the body of this newsletter. I continue to be pleased with our students’ academic success,
numerous field trips that enhance the classroom curricula, a strong drama programme, our accomplished musicians,
elective courses that engage students in hands-on activities and a dynamic athletic programme that saw both boys
and girls teams at all grade levels compete extremely well in league games and tournaments.
Of noteworthy recognition this year are:
• the changes in our instructional delivery model in all of our Life Skills classes
• our efforts in providing a more inclusive environment for our special needs students and our ESL students.
• National Portfolio Day at Emily Carr
• An interdisciplinary project: the drama production from Page to Stage inspired by our attempts to
encourage more teamwork and collaboration between and among departments.
• A new course offering for next year: Social Justice 12
• We Got Skillz; Global Voice: Bridging the digital divide with technology.
• Film Awards and Nominations
• Swim Team Provincial Meet (14 swimmers qualified for the provincial meet).
• Cross Country teams placed 1 st and 2 nd in Vancouver, 2 nd in the provincial meet.
We are fortunate to have a supportive PAC at Byng. We thank them for satisfying our department wish lists and
generous donations. We also like to thank a generous group of parents for showing their gratitude and appreciation
for the purposeful, and challenging learning opportunities our staff provide for the students at Byng. The selection
and wide array of foods at the teacher appreciation lunch on December 9 th was most impressive. The delicious food
nourished our hearts, mind, and soul.
As the holiday season approaches, it is wonderful to see many of our students in the role of global citizens as they
participate in such initiatives as collecting donations for (i). the Union Gospel Mission, and (ii). building a school in
Kenya. As always, but specifically in these rough financial times, it is good practice to give to those who have little
and, in turn, will receive very little.
The holidays can be a very stressful time of year as we try to meet the many emotional, financial and familiar
expectations that surround Christmas; however, this is also a time of celebration and fun. So I remind everyone to
take the time to enjoy your family and take the time to care for self. Be safe and in anticipation of the holidays
starting December 19 th , let us share our global holiday spirit by saying:
SCHOOL GROWTH STEERING COMMITTEE REPORT
_________________________________________________________________________
Lord Byng’s over-arching school growth goal for 2008 – 2009:
To continue to improve the level of citizenship in all students at Lord Byng Secondary in order to enhance a
positive school climate, and to stimulate learning, engagement and student pride.
Objectives for 2008 – 2009:
1. To continue to improve bonds between the students and the school community.
2. To continue to improve bonds between the students and the global community.
3. To improve communication throughout the school community.
When another school year begins, the on-going process of school growth at Lord Byng gets off the ground for
another year. Our growth goal and objectives for the 2008 – 2009 school year were retained from last year, as it was
felt that the process of achieving them and making the changes part of Byng’s school culture will take a number of
years to accomplish. The school growth steering committee, which oversees and supports the growth process, has
welcomed two new members this year – George Yannakoulias has taken over as chair for the School Connections
committee (Objectives #1) and Len Pelletier is the new chair of the Communications Committee (Objectives #3). A
big thanks to Doug Matear who decided to retain his position as chair of the Global Awareness and Sustainability
Committee (Objective #2) for another year.
Some of the projects that the growth committees have worked, and are working, on are as follows:
• Working with the MoreSports program to develop student leadership and participation in athletics
• Co-hosting a live webcast with Africa and Europe (We Got Skillz/Hearts in Action event – Dec. 3 rd )
to allow students around the world to discuss global awareness issues face-to-face
• Fleshing out the school’s Code of Conduct to come into line with Ministry guidelines
• Supporting greater inclusion of special needs and ESL students at Lord Byng
• Developing a project to improve the articulation process between Byng and its feeder elementary
schools
• Continuing to improve communication between home and school for all stakeholders of the Byng
community
• Working towards more electronic communication as part of becoming sustainable with our school
resources
Beyond the extensive work above, the Global Awareness and Sustainability Committee is continuing to work on a
significant number of exciting and meaningful projects and changes. Please see the details of the Global Awareness
and Sustainability Committee’s work in another part of this newsletter.
If you have any questions or would be willing to give some time to any of the committees, please feel free to contact
the School Growth department head, Sean Nugent (snugent@vsb.bc.ca) at any time. Any interest in being a parent
rep on the School Growth Steering Committee should be made through PAC or Maria Taddei (mtaddei@vsb.bc.ca)

WE GOT SKILLZ – GLOBAL VOICE 2008
_________________________________________________________________________
A Growth Plan Action Research Project Initiative Involving a Partnership with Heart in Action Enterprises.
Lord Byng was involved in our first online LIVE Multimedia Interactive Global Community with students from
Lord Byng, students from Bulles D’Oxygene in Paris, France, an internationally renowned musician and producer
from NewYork, Nile Rodgers who is chairman and founder of “We Are Family Foundation”, and students from Aga
Khan Secondary School in Uganda.
We are very pleased that Byng was a launching point for young people around the world to start utilizing innovative
secured multimedia communication - interactive video over the Internet. Participants were able to connect, to
communicate and to collaborate online in a CNN type roundtable telecast. Our students had an opportunity to
prepare and discuss issues they are currently facing in their respective regions and collectively build solutions for the
future. Topics included:
• Human Rights
• HIV/AIDS
• Unity
• Poverty, Education, Inequality
• Future
The event also gave students and youth the opportunity to make new connections with other youth and to meet
surprise guests who connected online. The interactive video will play a major role in the future of the new media
sector. We are excited about the partnership with Heart In Action Enterprises, to spearhead the push to close the
digital divide and to increase the level of online protection for children and youth in developing countries when
communicating over the internet. This kind of technology has implications for future curriculum and instruction that
is meaningful, relevant and engaging for our students. The global journey of unification and mobilization of young
people is a great opportunity to enlist young people all around the world to engage in the democratic process, to get
involved with their community and to promote positive change.
A huge thanks goes to the following people for their participation and involvement in organizing this event.
Teachers included: Mr. Nugent, Mr. Howes, Ms. Mann, Mr. Redekop. Our student participants, panelists and
technology support included: Torie Joy-Warrent, Ljudmila Petrovic, Frannie Heeney, Stefana Fratila, Michael
Mitton, John Carr, Giardatia Scales, Vivian He, Alice Huang, Abdi Boubia.
SUSTAINABILITY/GLOBAL AWARENESS TASK FORCE
_________________________________________________________________________
Committee Members: Kristina Tanner, Manuel Madeira, Maureen Bryce, Erin Zimmaro, Paula Violi, Jaime Tong,
Elise Barber (“Check Your Head”), Jim Rutley (administrator), Helen Xu (student), Doug Matear – Chair
Next Meeting: December 4 th in the library from 2:15 – 3:15 p.m.
This year we have continued to work hard on making sustainability and global issues a part of the Lord Byng
Growth Plan. We continue with our commitment to a Destination Conservation Project (this year the focus is on
water issues) and with our partnership with “Check Your Head”.
Starting early in September, students from the environmental club presented at grade assemblies. They also
presented to students during a Planning 10 assembly. As well, a group of environment club students presented to all
the elementary students at Jules Quesnel about how to start a school-based recycling program on October 10 th .
5. Lord Byng Newsletter
______________________________________________________________________________________
Then our environmental club leaders – Alyssa Boky and Anna Benke presented at the Environmental Educators
Provincial Conference on October 22 nd at Science World. Along with Mr. Raoul, these students finely represented
our school and the efforts we are making in regards to environmental practices such as composting, recycling, and
how we are trying to get a school garden started (i.e., preliminary plans have occurred for a vegetable garden and a
memorial garden).
On October 29 th , we were invited to attend a special presentation at York House where 6 of our students heard Jane
Goodall speak about her life as a scientist and conservationist. Ms. Goodall was the keynote member of a panel
which included environmentalists (Simon Jackson, Ian McAlister) and another scientist (Dr. Daniel Pauly).
Then on October 31 st we initiated our first “flick off” event but only to a limited success. This event tried to
encouraged students, staff, and teachers to consider turning off or using less electricity on this day. Unfortunately,
our posters and advertising for these events need to be better developed and thought out. Hopefully, our next “flick
off” day will be better planned and orchestrated because we strongly believe awareness raising event do have a
positive impact on environmental initiatives.
Andy finally, on November 14 th a group of environmental club students were invited to the Amnesty International
Film Festival where they spoke on why our club is encouraging people to take the tap water only pledge and why
we are campaigning for the use of metal water bottles instead of the plastic ones. By the way, we are in the process
of ordering metal bottles which we will sell within our school.
This first term, we have been enormously active and involved. The students in the environmental club have been
extremely active with various initiatives and deserve a lot of accolades for all their hard work. Nevertheless, we
could still use more student, staff and parent input and involvement. Please consider sharing ideas with us or
possibly attending our next sustainability task force meeting which is scheduled for December 4 th from 2:00 to 3:00
p.m. At the task force meetings, time is always set aside to allow the various sub-committees to report back on what
is happening in their groups. In addition, students can always join our environmental club which meets Wednesdays
in room 210. Students consider getting involved and making a difference! Thank you.
Please feel free to email Doug Matear at dmatear@vsb.bc.ca about sustainability and global issues.
SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
_________________________________________________________________________
We have had a busy start to the school year in Special Ed. With 3 new teachers to Byng in our Life Skills programs,
there was a lot to learn for our new staff and for our new and returning students. Now that first term is over, things
seem to have settled and we are all looking forward to a smooth second term with a less arduous learning curve!
Our department goal of increased inclusion and integration with the regular school program continues to provide
opportunities and challenges for the staff and students to face.
• Life Skills I – Ms. K. Pender – there have been lots of field trips happening this term. The class
goes to the “Snoozeling Room” every Monday; the students love it as it has a lot of soft lighting and
multi-sensory toys. As well, the class regularly attends swimming and gymnastics. They went on a
fieldtrip to the VSO and a Historical Walking Tour of Steveston. Both Lifeskills I and II are
working on the soy candles as a fundraiser for their programs. Upcoming December events –
Canada Place, Fort Langley, class Christmas Party and the District Bowling Party in Richmond on
December 4 th .
• Life Skills II – Ms. A. Frers - three students are in Work Experience programs right now. The
class has been practicing for the big bowling party on December 4 th – their goal is to beat Ronnie’s
score of 140! Every Tuesday, they have a Yoga instructor come for lessons and there is also weekly
Music Therapy for all kids in both life skills I and II programs.
• Learning Assistance/Life Skills – Ms. J. Tong - Students are involved in numerous clubs at lunch
– weight room with Alisa, Student Council, GSA Club, Environmental club, and they were the
dodge ball champions for intramurals. Regarding integration – one student is in 2 ESL classes, a
number of students are integrated into choir, art, media, photography, PE and cooking. Another
student attends English and Social Studies with the grade 8’s, two students are working in the
Cafeteria, another two students are shredding at the VPD, and 4 students currently have jobs out in
the community. The class is looking forward to the big bowling party on December 4 th .
• Byng Satellite – Mr. S. McKeen – students are getting lots of new kids enrolled, particularly at
Grade 8 and 9. The kids have been working hard preparing for an alternate school volleyball
tournament and narrowly missed out on seeing “Chuck D.”
• District Resource for Deaf and Hard of Hearing – Ms. D. Little - There are 6 deaf and hard of
hearing students enrolled at Byng. The kids have support from 2 sign language interpreters and one
SSA. Each of the 6 students gets a special party on their birthdays – sushi and cake to celebrate the
event. One of our Grade 11students achieved a perfect score for her SATII Math exam. A new
course – ASL 11 (American Sign Language) is being offered through Signing-On-Line and Ms.
Little is supervising one grade 10 student taking the course. Any student interested in taking this
course (they do not have to fall into the Deaf or Hard of Hearing category) can see Ms. Little or Ms.
Hurst.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________
• Resource Team – Ms. S. Hurst, Ms. M. Pronk, Ms. K. Crosbie, Mr. G. Kosman (Skills) and
Ms. A. Lee (Skills) – staff have been busy working with our new Grade 8’s to help them transition
successfully into high school. As well, as term one came to an end, there was lots of work preparing
students for term tests and exams. The skills teachers developed two checklists (one for home one
for school) for students who struggle with organization. Anyone interested can contact Ms. Hurst if
they feel their child could use extra help in this area. We are thrilled to have extra resource support
in Math/Science through Ms. Pronk and English/Socials through Ms. Crosbie and very happy to
welcome Ms. Lee to the SDC. We all look forward to getting students ready for midyear exams
upon our return from Christmas holidays.
The Special Education Department welcomes any Byng students who are interested in volunteering in our Life Skills
programs. Contact Ms. Hurst in A 213 if you would like to volunteer in a program or create new friendships with our
students. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
UNION GOSPEL
_________________________________________________________________________
Students from Ms. Tong’s Learning Assistance/Life Skills class are once again collecting donations for the Union
Gospel Mission. This will be the 8 th year of fundraising organized by students in LA/LS. They began planning in
November and made posters and obtained the support of Student Council.
Students visit classes every morning to see if there are any new donations. This annual project gives special needs
students a chance to try public speaking and money math (with staff assistance), as well as to raise awareness of
social responsibility among all students.
Our goal this year is $1500. All money raised will go towards the UGM to help with their meal service programs.
LIBRARY
_________________________________________________________________________
Congratulations to Alisa Brandt, a Byng Arts student, who was one of the prize winners of the VPL bookmark
contest. We will be receiving printed versions for her bookmarks for the students at Byng very soon. Well done,
Alisa!
The librarians continue to welcome students to suggest book titles (fiction or non-fiction) that they would like to
see in the library. It is important that students understand that this collection is for them and that they are therefore
encouraged to give us input.
OVERDUE books: Parents of students who have not returned books due in September will receive a bill from the
library attached to their child’s report card. Please help your son or daughter find and return these books so that
other students may have access to the material. Also, we like to foster a sense of personal responsibility in students
and a sense of value for books in our library. Thank you for your support: it means everything.
Donations and other support: We always welcome and appreciate any donations of fiction or non-fiction to the
library: if a book is a “friend” you will always know that it has a safe haven here. Also, please visit the library if
you happen to be in the school. If you have some time to spare, and are interested, you are always welcome to
volunteer – your advice and talents will be appreciated.
A final note about WEBCAT, our online catalogue. Parents, please encourage your children to explore this
excellent resource. They can use it not only to renew books online, but can to access the online databases that the
School Board has purchased. We look forward to your continued support. Have a happy holiday!
CONCERT BAND AND SYMPHONY
www.byngmusic.org
Our Winter concerts will be on December 17 and 18. The junior night, Dec 17, will include the Beginner
Band, Junior Band, Junior and Intermediate Jazz Bands, and Intermediate Band. The senior night, Dec 18, will
consist of the Choir, Senior Jazz Band and the Senior Wind Ensemble. We hope to see you there.
On Nov. 17, the Ad Mare Wind Quintet (professional local group) played in class for our Junior Band and
inspired the students with their chamber music. Then the Intermediate Band attended a Vancouver Symphony
Orchestra rehearsal at the Orpheum Theatre on Nov 28 and observed how a professional ensemble prepares for a
concert.
The Junior Band and Intermediate Bands played at the junior night of the Vancouver Secondary Concert
Band Festival on Nov. 13 and received excellent comments from the adjudicators. Both bands played wonderfully!
The Senior Wind Ensemble performed at the senior night of the Vancouver Secondary Concert Band
Festival on Nov. 20 and were the last to play. The adjudicators said it was an outstanding performance and that it
was the best way to end a great evening.
On Friday, November 21, the Lord Byng Symphony Orchestra’s first concert, was a great success and
congratulations to Scott Bae and Ed Mason who were both featured during the night. The LBSO will continue our
partnership with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra through their VSO Connects program (this year Keeping
Connected). Members of the VSO will come to the school to work with our students in a clinic and inspirational
discussions. Please see our website for more details on VSO Connects and other news. www.lbso.ca The next
LBSO concert is February 27, 2009 when we will celebrate Felix Mendelssohn’s 200 th birthday with an all
Mendelssohn concert.
The Junior Symphony played on Nov. 25 during the Strings Winter Concert and did a wonderful job. This
class is team taught by Ms. Kurth and Mr. MacLennan and is now in its second year as a course.

This year’s Byng Arts Piano Concerto Competition final will be held on Friday, Dec. 5 at 2 pm in the Band
room. The winner will be announced then and we will post the results on the LBSO’s website.
The Senior Wind Ensemble and Lord Byng Symphony Orchestra will be travelling to the United Kingdom
in March for a 10 day performing tour of England Wales and Scotland. See the Band website for the itinerary.
www.byngmusic.org/band
We will post pictures of our travels on the net while we are still there so you can follow along with our adventures.
We have 65 students going and 5 chaperones and one of the highlights will be our performance in St. Paul’s
Cathedral in London.
Ralph Hultgren, one of Australia’s greatest contemporary composers, will be here on Tuesday, Dec. 2 to
conduct his own piece Masada with the Senior Wind Ensemble. We had a teleconference through the technology of
Skype on Oct. 28 and the students had the opportunity to ask him questions about the piece, why he wrote it, and
about himself. We will perform Masada at our Winter concert Dec. 18.
JAZZ BANDS AND JAZZ CHOIR
_________________________________________________________________________
Coming Up Soon
Our year-end winter concerts are coming up on December 17 and 18. We always look forward to presenting
our students’ performances in our beautiful Theatre. Their efforts to prepare to entertain you and the high they get
from hearing your response are very important to us teachers. Please come to hear the Junior and Intermediate
groups on Wednesday, Dec 17, and the Senior groups on Thursday, December 18. We know that you’ll appreciate
the quality of the music you hear.
Recent Successes
All three Jazz Bands and the Jazz Choir recently performed at District festivals, where they received very
enthusiastic comments from the adjudicators.
The Junior, Intermediate and Senior Jazz Bands played at the Vancouver Secondary Jazz Festival on
Thursday, November 15. Both groups played extremely well! Junior and Intermediate bands combined in
performances of Duke Ellington’s Mood Indigo and the much newer On Broadway. The Senior Band played
wonderfully on a very difficult arrangement of Fascinating Rhythm, and blew the roof off with a powerhouse
version of Green Onions. The adjudicators made special mention of the good solos our students performed.
The Jazz Choir followed their emotional performance of Amazing Grace at the Byng Remembrance Day
ceremonies by performing it again at the District Choir Festival. The audience roared its appreciation for this song,
and the beautiful solo countermelody sung by Tonnette Choi, as well as for the sultry Sway, a great old standard
made popular again recently by Michael Buble.
Further Ahead
Looking ahead to the spring, the Senior Jazz Band and the Lord Byng Community Music Society will
present the eleventh annual Swyng with Byng Big Band Dance on Friday, April 24, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. in the school
gymnasium. We invite all adults in our community! We would love to see you come out to enjoy a great evening of
music and dance. We have professional dance instructors to help you with some swing moves, and David Branter
and other local professional musicians will again sit in with the band. The gym is transformed with lights, candles
and decorations into a sparkling Swing Era ballroom. This event is traditionally our Music Society’s biggest
fundraiser, through ticket sales and the Silent Auction, but the emphasis, as always, is on your enjoyment of the
music of the Swing Era, dancing and spending an evening with friends. Tickets are $15 and are available from the
Music Department. Please phone 604 713 8171 local 7727, or email rholburn@vsb.bc.ca

STRINGS PROGRAM
______________________________________________________________________________________
The Strings Program had a full and exciting 1 st term. Lord Byng was very honoured to be selected as the only
secondary school that the National Arts Centre Orchestra coached. Honour Orchestra received a wonderful mast
class from Donnie Deallorn – the principal second violinist with NACO and both Senior and Honour Orchestra
students participated in a master class with Pinchas Zuchermann – at UBC School of Music.
This year marked our 17 th annual Whistler Retreat. The students enjoyed their coaching and rehearsals and
everybody had a great time.
Honour Orchestra made a great impression on all Lord Byng community when they participated in the
Remembrance Day Assemblies and performed in a professional and moving manner.
Honour Orchestra students participated in both Byng Arts Information Night and a Grade 7 Parent Information
Night. They played very well and represented our school at the best possible level.
Our Strings Winter Concert was very successful. All our groups made a very good start this year. This year also
marks the first time I am teaching Choir. It is a great treat to be able to see how much young people can learn in
such short time. I would like to extend my thanks for your attention, enthusiasm and willingness to improve.
To all our parents and students’ I would like to thank you for your support of each other.
With the best and warmest wishes, Ms. O. Kurth
HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE VISUAL ARTS DEPARTMENT
_________________________________________________________________________
This fall the Visual Art students in Ms. Webber’s classes have not only been busy with their own projects they have
enjoyed working with other groups in the school. The Drama Department’s “Page to Stage” production offered an
opportunity for the Visual Arts students to become involved with painting the illustrations to the stories. They also
supported the Student Council’s Dance “Frost Yourself” by making snowmen and snow flakes for decoration. The
Business class joined an art class in the production and sale of Christmas wreathes. All ventures have been very
successful and we look forward to many more partnerships with other classes and school groups while also keeping
focus on growing as artists. Our next venture will be getting involved with the open area at Queen Elizabeth
Elementary during their craft days December 16 th & 17 th .
SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
______________________________________________________________________________________
The Lord Byng Science department would like to formally welcome Melanie Pronk and Ceara Mullin into the group.
Both teachers arrive with a wealth of talent and enthusiasm for teaching and will make a significant impact in the
department.
The Science department is in its third year of new curriculum in Science 8 (2006), Science 9 (2007) and Science 10
(Sept. 2008). Teachers have worked diligently in adapting to changes in content and have been well supported by
new teacher resources in all three courses. Students have been well supplied with brand new textbooks in each
course and the optional and very supportive student workbooks. Workbooks in these and any other science course
are always available through consultation with your subject area teacher.
This year due to student demand, the department is offering and running two blocks of Earth Science 11. This
course has replaced Science & Technology 11 as it is recognized as a science credit needed for graduation. It should
provide an ideal opportunity to fulfill student needs and help prepare students for the rigors of Geography 12.

Science teachers are offering many opportunities to both current and future Lord Byng students. Physics teachers
are developing future engineers with spaghetti bridges and trebuchets, along with the Physics Olympics in the
spring. In Chemistry classes, lab experimentation is practically applying theory in the areas of Chemical Kinetics
and Measurement. Future Byng students are getting a first hand look at things in science classes through a Sciencelink
program being offered by George Yannakoulias. Students from Queen Elizabeth School get the opportunity to
join classes and get a hands-on-look science processes via experimentation. This is an excellent opportunity to
connect ourselves to one of our feeder schools and provide a mentoring experience for our science students.
With the end of 2008 drawing near, I would like to extend season’s greetings to all the Lord Byng Community.
given a theme (to err is human) and a prop (a wheel) at 5 p.m. on the Friday. They had to hand in their completed
films at 5 p.m. the following Sunday. All of the Byng contestants passed the first hurdle, completing the film, this is
the first time in Byng’s history that all students were able to get their films completed.
In between tailoring their jackets, Textiles 3 students have made little teddy bears we hope to give to the ambulance
service for children affected by trauma. Look for our jackets after winter break! Also the Textile 3 students will be
collaborating with the theatre department by designing costumes for the upcoming production of “Much Ado about
Nothing”.
Textile 2 students are busy with jackets too. These are not as fitted as the tailored ones and should be seen around
the school in January. Very stylish this season. Our project for the community involves a trip to Blenheim Lodge in
January where we plan to distribute our adult clothing protectors.
Textile 1 students are finishing their pyjama bottoms just in time for the holidays! Very stylish togs with cuffs and
piping galore.
Grade 8 Textile Applied Skills students are making puppy dogs and painted tote bags. (Shh! I know what some
people are getting for Christmas!)
Fibre Arts students have been very busy knotting coat hangers, embroidering bags, and knitting scarves. (Let’s hope
it gets cold enough to wear them!) For the final two weeks before the holidays we are working on holiday cards
using skills borrowed from embroidery and quilting.

Senior Foods and Nutrition students have driven the school crazy with the smell of gingerbread wafting through the
halls. Their decorated and wrapped gingerbread houses can be seen in display cases throughout the school. Turkey
dinners are on the menu next.
Foods and Nutrition 10 are starting their “B’s” holiday baking, biscotti and bars. It’s amazing how many “visitors”
we get during this time!
Foods and Nutrition 9 are keeping with the gingerbread theme with shaped gingerbread cookies decorated with
colourful icing. Students continue to impress us with their creativity!
Grade 8 Applied Skills-Foods will be contributing the smell of pizza to the halls to finish this rotation. Always a
popular lab!
Social Psychology AKA Family Management are looking at coming of age celebrations for adolescents and will be
moving toward self-concept and how it’s influenced by the media etc.
As for Psychology 11 we have looked at our brains (ha ha), finished our unit on sleep (some more enthusiastically
than others!), and are moving towards Altered States of Consciousness and Abnormal Behaviour. Should be an
interesting winter!
GALLERY ART CLUB
_________________________________________________________________________
The white walls of our Gallery have been awash in colour thanks to the outstanding creativity of our student artists
and the hard work of the Gallery Art Club. Each month we curate a new show with a different theme. We began the
year with a presentation of landscape paintings by Ms. Webber and followed that with a display of Senior work
completed over the summer. We recently took down our Art History Show titled “A Walk in the Woods”. This
show was highlighted by an installation of coloured sticks based on the work of the Group of Seven done by Ms.
Violi’s Art 1 class. Our current show is the Colour Show with work from all the art classes as well as submissions
from celebrating the exceptional work of our students.
SENIOR HONOURS ART
______________________________________________________________________________________
Congratulations to our Senior Honours Art students on their strong start to the new year. Over 20 students submitted
one or two works completed over the summer for the Senior Summer Show and from that group, five students were
selected to have their work displayed at Canada Place as part of the Circle Craft Fair. We are very proud of Sherry
Heo, Sally Kim, Rachyl Myara, Oliver Johnson and Julia Pearce for their outstanding work.
Several students also took part in National Portfolio Day at Emily Carr. Each year post-secondary institutes from
across North America come to review the artwork of prospective students and offer feedback and suggestions as
how to best present their work when applying for art school. In preparation for this event, representatives from
Emily Carr, Ontario College of Art and Design, Concordia University and Parsons visited our Ssenior Honours Art
class. In addition representatives from the Art Centre of California, Maryland Instituted College of Art, and Nova
Scotia College of Art and Design were in the school tos speak to students about their programs. Frannie Heeney,
Ellis Sam, Sherry Heo, Claire Hsu, Grace Kim, Jess Sallay-Carrington and Hande Ersoy all stepped forward to have
their work critiqued. These students and those who went to Portfolio Day should be commended for putting their
work on display. It takes a great deal of courage and maturity to open oneself to criticism but it is the first step in
growing as an artist.
ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
______________________________________________________________________________________
Now that Term One has come to a close and there is a moment to step back from the marking, there is a chance to
share and celebrate some of the news items from the English Department. There is always something exciting going
on in all of our classrooms, but here are just a few examples to give you a sense of the sorts of things that go on in
Byng’s English classrooms.
Celebrations
Alisa Brandt (Byng Arts 9) was awarded her prize for the Vancouver Public Library Bookmark contest. On Friday,
December 5 th , representatives from the Dunbar Branch of the VPL and the Friends of the Library came to Ms.
Yeung’s classroom where, before her class and a handful of teachers, Alisa was awarded a cheque for $250, 100
bookmarks with her design on them, and a 4' high poster size version of her winning bookmark.
This year, VPL received 547 entries for their bookmark contest; Alisa won for “Best Computer Generated Design”
and her bookmark will be distributed in all 22 libraries across Vancouver.
Collaboration
For a look at Alisa’s winning entry, go to
http://www.vpl.ca/events/details/express_yourself_teen_bookmark_contest
The Theatre and English Departments proudly presented Page to Stage (December 9 th - 12th). This theatre event
brought several of the stories from our English 12 curriculum to the Lord Byng’s main stage. While true kudos go to
the Ms. Mann and Ms. McKay and the Th. Co. students, this collaborative project was a great first venture between
our departments.
In the classroom
On December 5 th , Joanna Reid, a Byng Grad of ‘98, PhD Candidate in Geography at UBC, and winner of the
Orange/Harper’s Bazaar Short Story Competition 2007 came to Byng to share a writer’s workshop opportunity for
our students: Free Write. These Free Community-Based Workshops will provide “young writers the opportunity to
learn from local working writers” such as Jen Sookfong Lee, Dan Mangon, Brendan McLeod and others, including
our very own Joanna Reid.
http://www.orangeprize.co.uk/show/feature/orange-pr-harpers-winner-07
Students in Literary Arts 10 and Writing 12 have been targeted for this opportunity; only 25 students will be
selected by Free Write to join the workshop.
Baba is back! Returning for the 6 th year in a row, Baba Brinkman (http://www.babasword.com/)brings his
internationally acclaimed Rap Canterbury Tales to Ms. Yeung’s Literature 12 class. This wonderful spoken word
artist always plays to rave reviews. We are pleased that he is still able to fit Byng into his very busy performance
schedule. For more on Baba, see (http://www.babasword.com/).
English Teacher In-service
Of course, a key focus in our department is literacy. Richard Harris is our school’s Literacy Coordinator and has
been attending monthly District Literacy meetings at the VSB on our behalf and reporting back to us at our monthly
department meetings.

Additionally, on our December 4 th Collaborative Day, Media Literacy Specialist Wendy Chen came and provided inservice
for the English Department. We will be working with Ms. Chen on the development and implementation of
media units which will present and build upon some of the skills needed to view texts (in this case still and moving
picture texts in particular) in critical and thoughtful ways. We are still working out the details, but we would like
Ms. Chen to help us implement these units in as many of our main school and Byng Arts English classes as possible.
SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT
_________________________________________________________________________
1. Recent developments in federal politics led to CTV News filming at Lord Byng. Once of Mr. Nugent’s
Social Studies 11 classes were filmed discussing the various possibilities of parliamentary transition that
could occur based upon the recent political showdown in Ottawa. The Global news reporter was very
impressed with level of discourse provided by our students and their teacher.
2. Results from the November term three History 12 exam have indicated that our students are again among the
best in the province. Students did very well overall in light of the fact that for many of them, this was their
first sampling of a university style three hour exam.
3. Social Justice 12 is an exciting new course offering next year for students in grade 11 and 12. The course
offers a dramatic new learning opportunity for students to raise their awareness of social injustice, to enable
them to analyze situations from a social justice perspective, and to provide them with knowledge, skills, and
an ethical framework to advocate for a socially just world. Students will be offered a broad perspective of
many historical and contemporary examples of social injustice in Canada and throughout the world. Among
the many issues that will be examined during the course will be the discrimination and persecution of
individuals and/or groups due to age, sex, race, sexual orientation, religion, disability, socioeconomic status
or political belief. Students will be given a variety of learning opportunities through field trips, guest
speakers, role plays, and discussion groups culminating in a student created social justice action plan for
their local community or beyond.
COUNSELLING- GRADE 12
______________________________________________________________________________________
Grade12’s are reminded to check out the green Post-Secondary Information Booklet for important dates and general
information. If requested, self-report first term marks to institutions applied to. Please see Ms. Dowell in the office
to request an official transcript. Most institutions will request marks to be self-reported after 2 nd term marks are in.
TITLE OF STUDY: THE IMPACT OF CHINESE CANADIAN ADOLESCENTS’
PERCEPTIONS OF PARENTAL WARMTH AND CONTROL ON THEIR
PSYCHOLOGICAL ADJUSTMENT
_________________________________________________________________________
My name is Cynthia Ho and I am a M.A. student in the Department of Counselling Psychology at UBC. You may
recall from the June 2008 Newsletter that I am currently working on my graduate research study that is seeking to
investigate the impact of parenting on Chinese Canadian youth.
Over the past 6 months, I visited several secondary schools in Vancouver and Richmond to invite students to take
part in this study. I made my visit to Lord Byng Secondary between late October and early November. In total, 107
students at Lord Byng participated in this study, which is a fantastic turnout rate that accounts for over 50% of the
entire study sample!
As some of you already know, I offered the first survey session at Lord Byng on Thursday, October 30 th . While I
was excited to see over 100 enthusiastic students on this particular day, I had not anticipated this overwhelmingly
positive response rate and was unfortunately not prepared to accommodate such a large crowd. I would like to
extend my sincere apologies to all students and parents who were inconvenienced on this day. I have since offered 2
make-up sessions to ensure that all students who were interested in participating were given the opportunity to do so.
My experience at Lord Byng has been wonderful and I would like to express my gratitude to all those who have
supported this research initiative. I am currently in the process of analyzing the data and writing up the final report.
When this study is complete, I will be in contact with Maria Taddei (Principal) to discuss how to share my overall
findings with all of you. In the meantime, feel free to contact me or my supervisor if you have any questions,
comments, or concerns about this study.
Best Wishes,
