Canada hosts its global
members in Vancouver
Canada played host in 2010 to the annual MDRT meeting, for the
first time in Vancouver. The wonderful new Canada Place with the
picturesque backdrop of the mountains provided an awesome venue
for the meeting. We were still on our “Olympic High” and by all
accounts the meeting was a huge success with many of our international
members visiting the Canadian west coast for the first time.
Over 2,000 members participated in the “Million Meals Challenge”.
Groups of 8-10 members rubbed shoulders in groups, often a mixture
of cultrues and languages, but with one common goal... to pack
one million meals, that would later be shipped around the world to
feed the hungry. The goal was reached before the final day Main
Platform!
We have completed our first year
partnership with Special Olympics.
A few Board members witnessed
the excitement and enthusiasm at
the opening cermonies for the Canadian
Games held in London, Ontario
last summer. Athletes and their families
were no less excited than those
who participated in the traditional
Olympic Games held in Vancouver
earlier in the year. It is inspiriing to
see these athletes reach their potential
through sport and truly heart warming to witness the support
and love of thier families and friends.
We are very excited to welcome our new Gold sponsor SunLife
Financial, and Empire Financial our Bronze sponsor, who came
on board with us in 2010. Their commitment to the
MDRT Foundation Canada has enhanced our profile
in the industry and allowed us to use their example to
encourage others in the Insurance and Financial services
field to join in the work we do... supporting locally based
charities that impact the lives of people living and working
in the communities where our members are based.
Our annual phone-a-thon was sponsored by Manulife Financial
in 2010 and will be again this spring. This is our most significant
fundraising initiative, held over 2 days each spring. Manulife’s contribution
allows us to use their offices and telephones to contact
our members, thank them for contributing to the Foundation and
to bring on board new Knights. We thank Manulife. We would also
like to express our appreciation for the office space afforded us by
Advocis.
As we continue to receive more grant applications from the grass
roots charities that we have traditionally supported, we have made
a strategic decision to make the grants we give more significant.
Please see the new details enclosed in this newsletter
I would like to thank the current board for their continued efforts
on behalf of your Foundation and also to commend our capable
Executive Director Joanne Taylor for her enthusiastic management
of the office.
Most importantly, we thank you, our Knights for your support.
Sincerely,
Debbie
MDRT FOUNDATION CANADA NEWSLETTER april 2011
Membership Reflections
When Sydney Crosby laced up his first pair of skates; Mozart first
hummed a tune and Dr. Jonas Salk aspired to medical school little
did they know that their rink; concert hall and lab would produce
an Olympic Gold Medal and Stanley Cup; some of the world’s most
beautiful music and the cure to polio, the disease which in 1952 in the
United States of America was contracted by over 58,000 people, killing
3,145, leaving 21,269 with mild to disabling paralysis and representing
America’s greatest fear apart from an atom bomb.
Sydney Crosby was gifted athletically with superb co-ordination and
peripheral vision. Mozart had a phenomenal ability to convert his creative
genius into complex musical compositions that resulted in soaring,
beautiful and timeless gifts to the world. Dr. Salk had an intellect,
compassion and humility that shunned the front line medical limelight
to research a cure for a disease that he felt should not be shattering
the lives of young children and their families around the world.
We can only imagine their combined determination, drive and commitment
when thousands of pucks hit goal posts or hundreds of laborious
scores did not quite come together or when time after time encouraging
research avenues proved false.
In addition to their enormous skills and positive resolve ; each of these
great men were able to learn from their peers; study the accepted
parameters of the day of their respective crafts and then consciously
attempt to redefine them. They themselves supplied the grit, energy;
and willingness to enter the dust of the arena but they were armed
with the vision, integrity, hopes and devotions of those who had gone
before.
Our industry is blessed with so many people around the world
who bring discipline; creativity; entrepreneurial spirit and
hope for their clients through the guaranteed fulfillment of
such dreams as education; homes; businesses and philanthropic
legacies via the financial instruments we represent.
But equally the Million Dollar Round Table, as stated in its
mission, serves as an “international network of leading insurance
and investment financial services’ advisors who are committed
to providing exemplary client services and who display the highest
standards of ethics and professional knowledge.”
As a young man entering our industry 43 years ago, I aspired to have
access to the empathy; passion; example; successes; failures; encouragement
and diverse methodology of those giants who had gone
before me and who were members of the MDRT.
Suddenly, after first qualifying , I was never again alone when on the
road to a client meeting or early in the day after another prospective
meeting was cancelled or when I was struggling to find the correct
solution to a prospective client’s objectives.
MDRT has provided me over the years access to the heartbeats of
peers both past and present; it has enlarged me as a person and it has
provided me membership in an international organisation whose real
mandate might best be summed up in the words of a great Canadian,
Harry “Red” Foster:
“Make no small plans, they have no magic to stir a man’s blood and
probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans, aim high in
hope and work, remembering that a noble diagram once recorded will
not die”.
Forever grateful,
Brian Etherington

making a
difference
The MDRT Canada Foundation
entered into a three-year partnership
with Special Olympics
Canada in 2010, which will
see 20% of dispersable donations
committed to the sport
movement and its programs.
Special Olympics
was founded on the simple
notion that sport has an incredible opportunity
to make lives better, change attitudes and
strengthen communities.
For this incredible sport movement, 2010 was an exceptional
year. From new programs targeting children and
youth to the launch of additional sports and a successful national
competition, there were many notable milestones.
“With the support of the MDRT Foundation Canada and its generous
members, meaningful differences are being made in the lives of children,
youth and adults with an intellectual disability in communities across Canada,”
says Neil Glasberg, interim president and CEO of Special Olympics Canada.
One of the year’s single most exciting activities, for example, was the national launch of two programs,
Active Start and FUNdamentals, targeting children. The goal? To provide early instruction in essential motor
skills like walking, running, jumping and balancing, all with an eye to improving the child’s physical, social
and cognitive abilities in everyday activities while building a solid foundation for the long-term.
Coordinators are now in place in each province and territory to recruit even more athletes ages 2 to 21 to the
movement, whether through schools or in the community. While Active Start focuses on athletes between the
ages of two and six, FUNdamentals is designed for children ages six through nine. In total, there are now
more than 2,700 children and youth registered in these programs.
“Special Olympics is often the only place where children, youth and adults with an intellectual disability
have the opportunity to participate in their communities and to develop a strong belief in themselves,”
says Mr. Glasberg. “We thank MDRT Canada Foundation and its members for their
support in making this happen.”
CANADA

Home sweet home, thanks to our friends at Advocis.
“The first
Friday night
the kids
told me
get to
lost.”
Many of our knights are unaware of how much CMDRT relies on the wonderful generosity of Advocis.
They provide us with our office space and we rely on some of their office administration services such as
computer technical support. We always look forward to any opportunity to partner with them on charitable
events.
I was 56 and prosperous.
They were 13 to 18 and
disadvantaged. Many
were being raised by
single mothers or their
extended family. They
were living in a community
adversely affected
by a violent culture of
drugs and gangs.
It was June 1998 and I
had volunteered to work
at a Drop‐In Centre at
Yonge Street Mission.
The Centre reached out
to the youth of Regent
Park, one of Toronto’s
most troubled areas.
My first responsibility was to referee the basketball games and give
the young people an example they could look up to. I began to attend
their high school basketball games and was invited to become
an assistant coach. The Team won the Ontario Senior Boys High
School Championship in 2002.
Working at the drop in centre was difficult and emotionally draining.
Some of our kids were jailed. Tragically, others were shot. But they
saw that we truly cared about them. I felt a connection and there
were many opportunities to make a difference in their lives.
In June of 2002 the varsity coach of Eastern Commerce Collegiate
and I met to form an American Athletic Union Travelling Team with
the support of Yonge Street Mission. We have never looked back.
Neither have the kids.
A number of the kids from the Regent Park Drop In Centre played on
the travelling team. So far, 34 young people have obtained full athletic
academic scholarships from Division One NCAA colleges in the
USA. Many others from our team have gone on to post secondary
education in Canada too.
Working with Yonge Street
Mission at the Christian Community
Centre has been a
privilege and a blessing. The
lives of these young adults
have been given a pathway
to develop their character and
mold their lives. They have
become positive role models
and a source of pride for their
community.
Your Foundation has a wider focus for
2011: corporate sponsorships and more
significant grants.
Since we began in 1995, MDRT Foundation Canada has
granted close to 2 million dollars to worthy charities across
Canada. This past year your Executive Board has worked
hard to expand on this success, asking “how can we make
donations more effective?” and “how can we increase our
overall level of donations?”.
One thing we hear from charities is that it’s difficult to conduct
operations consistently from year to year when the amount of
funding varies and is unknown ahead of time. To that end we
have entered into a 3-year partnership with Special Olympics
Canada, which does its work across Canada, serving many
communites where our members live. We have pledged 20%
of our dispersable funds to this national charity, and in 3 years
another national charity will be selected by our membership.
We also made a donation in 2010 on your behalf to the Red
Cross, in order to help victims of the Haiti earthquake.
Aside from these national-level grants, we would like to make
donations to our member-sponsored charities more meaningful.
With more applicants each year, the amount we can
give each has become smaller and does not represent the
work involved in completing a grant application. Therefore the
Board of Directors is very excited to announce that where
appropriate we will give $5,000 grants to the grassroots charities
that typically apply for assistance. The Executive Grant
Committee’s mandate will be to focus on the qualified, smaller
charities first, those that typically do not receive government
funding. We look forward to receiving completed applications
no later than July 15, 2011.
In addition to fine-tuning the way we “Grant Hope,” the second
major initiative this year has been to put in a tremendous
effort to attract corporate sponsorships and thereby magnify
the power of our members’ donations to do good works. We
are pleased to announce two new corporate sponsors:
GOLD SPONSOR: $50,000 Sun Life Financial
BRONZE SPONSOR: $10,000 Empire Financial
