$5,560 awarded to Kindness in Action
Last year, the Canadian
MDRT Foundation and
the MDRT Foundation
(USA) made a special joint
project grant in the
amount of USD $5,560 to
Kindness in Action Service
Society of Alberta.
Kindness in Action is a
group of concerned
individuals, motivated by a
belief in the dignity of all
people and their right to
basic human needs. This
non-partisan and entirely
volunteer based
organization focuses on
providing dental care and
pain relief to people living
in Central and South
America.
The joint project grant was
funded by donations
made by Canadian
MDRT members
through their 2006
MDRT registration
forms. The Foundation
provides a vehicle for
Canadian MDRT
members and others in
the industry to pool
their charitable giving
with their colleagues in
order to provide grants
Great-West Life, the Assurance Company sponsors the MDRT Foundation’s
Canadian booth at Conference in San Diego
Ever wonder where those
donations dollars go? At the
MDRT Foundation, Great
West Life sponsored the
MDRT Foundation Canadian
booth at the Million Dollar
Roundtable (USA) conference
in San Diego last year. Former
Coordinator, Jeri Reason, for
the CMDRT Fdn went to the
conference and spoke of the
conferences’ benefits not only
to Great-West Life, but to
members of the Foundation. “The
conference is really great. Everyone is
very friendly and they definitely want to
come and speak to everybody, and go
to every booth. Great-West Life got the
CMDRT FOUNDATION NEWSLETTER
President’s Message:
Chris H.W. Facey, BA, CLU, CFP, CH.F.C President 2006-2007
As I finish my second year as President it gives me great pleasure to report since 1995 we have given grants totaling
$1,132,646, and in 2006 we gave 59 grants totaling $117,231, plus through a joint project between our Foundation and the
MDRT Foundation, we gave a grant of $5561 US to Kindness in Action. Every year we sponsor a booth at the MDRT annual
meeting and last year in San Diego we had 32 members who helped on the booth, and we received 11 new pledges; five
Bronze, two Silver, two Gold and two Diamond, for a total of $46,000; four members upgraded their pledges for a total of
$10,000; one renewal pledge of $5,000, and we raised over $8200 on our booth for a program called “Be The Change.” There
were 1117 Canadian MDRT members in 2006, 606 active in MDRT with 443 Foundation members. Our percentage of
Foundation members to MDRT membership is one of the best in the industry.
I would like to thank Great-West Life, my company sponsor, who, in recognition of my term as President and my pledge level,
gave a donation of $10,000. I thank them for their generous gift, and I hope other President’s get similar support from their
sponsoring company.
It is rewarding to see more and more Foundation members not only supporting applications, but who are involved in those
organizations. Remember, “it’s not what you make that counts, it’s what you do with it that makes a difference in the world.”
While the maximum grant is $5,000, every dollar counts to charities.
Prior to 2004 we were asking members to pledge a specific amount over a number of years, but we now feel this is limiting. I
am very pleased during my term as President we were asking members to make “open ended” pledges which would only be
terminated on his/her death or exit from the business. I, like you, continue to support many charities in my community with
increasing amounts each year as my business grows, so why not do the same in the Foundation? Our initiative in 2006 was to
get people to come on board for an indefinite period of time, and as their success in the business grew, increase their annual
pledge. As members finished their pledges, we contacted them about re-enrolling and while some felt they had met their
obligation, a number recommitted. Until the end of 2005, 202 members finished their pledges, for this we thank them, but 54
of them have recommitted to equal or higher than what they had been giving. Three did a one-time gift and seven are
considering for 2007. This is a re-enrollment rate of more than 25%, but we can do better. As long as you are in the business
you should continue to support our Foundation.
Our hope is to increase the total pledges and get all of you involved; thus allowing us to give maximum grants to all
organizations. Each member this year should take it upon themselves to sign up one new Foundation member. Thank you
Board members for your efforts, and thanks to our Grants Committee for evaluating and distributing our funds. Thanks to
Desjardins Financial Securities for hosting our Ontario Phone-a-Thon and every member who made calls during the Phone-a-
Thon all across Canada. Without this volunteerism, our organization would not function. We are dependent on our friends,
and I thank Steve Howard and Advocis for allowing the Foundation to be housed in their offices in Toronto over the years.
I need to specifically thank two people: Michael Links who has been an Executive member for many years, the last two as
Chair, finished his term in June 2007. Thank you Michael for your untiring efforts on our behalf. Jeri Reason, our Executive
Director since 2002, indicated in October 2006 she was resigning to dedicate more time to her other business. Thank you Jeri
for your dedication, enthusiasm, and outstanding effort in keeping us all in line. Without your work behind the scenes,
nothing would happen. Jeri has made my term of office run smoothly, and we are very sorry to lose her, but wish her well.
Jeri stayed on for a couple months to help us hire a new Executive Director and show her the ropes. Rina Rosen is our new
Executive Director as of January 2007, and we are very pleased with their selection. Rina and Jeri worked closely in getting
everything in order and the committee has made a good choice. We welcome Rina aboard. The next MDRT meeting is June
10 - 13, 2007 in Denver, Colorado, so please come over to our booth, volunteer your time, bring a friend, and help make the
Foundation better. It is only when busy people give of their time that things get accomplished. As I pass the Presidency over
to Les Canavan and move to Chair for the next two years, I wish Les and his Executive every success.
Your Foundation is in capable hands, but we need you to become active members by starting, recommitting, or increasing
your pledge; helping with the Phone-a-Thon, Grants Committee, or serving on the Board. Step up to the plate and make your
organization bigger and better than before. Best wishes for 2007.
A letter from a member to you: making a donation of
life insurance to the Canadian MDRT Foundation
Dear fellow members,
I was so excited to deliver a cheque in our community
on your behalf. This was so thrilling for me that I
promptly raised my commitment to the Canadian
MDRT Foundation. Then my worries began: I realized
that like our clients, I too could run out of time before
fulfilling my pledge. So I eagerly made our Canadian
Foundation the beneficiary of life insurance, sufficient
to pay in full what I hope to contribute over the next 20
years or so.
Add to this with Michele Lukman’s article on H.Kirke
Lewis (Round the Table, Nov/Dec 2006). Her title,
“Donating a life insurance policy is the gift that keeps
giving”, caught my eye because it confirms how you
and I can guarantee we will full.
Thank you MDRT,
And thank you to our Canadian Foundation!
Yours sincerely,
Brian Weatherdon
