Better Together: Driving
Change for Sustainability
Gerrit van Rensburg,
Western Cape Minister
of Agriculture and Rural
Development.
I
cannot think of a more appropriate theme for an
agricultural event in 2012 than “Change for Sustainability”.
Agriculture, a profession which used
to be known for its consistent and repetitive rhythm,
has changed dramatically over the past decade. In
South Africa, this is even more so, as land and land
ownership has become the centre of a very emotional
and intense political debate.
In South Africa, we need to balance redistribution of
land with food production. We need to balance production
with our footprint on the environment. We
need to balance the products we produce against
fickle consumer demand which changes ever quicker.
We need to balance dependable supply to export
markets with the ability to find new markets as world
events unfold.
“To change is never easy
and often creative thinking
& unconventional measures
might be called for. ”
South African farmers are very good at doing all the
above, and during a season which is not interrupted
with extreme events such as floods or long droughts,
we generally make a good living from farming, but
sometimes we are presented with curve balls too hard
to handle.
The ostrich industry is currently facing such a curve
ball. After one year’s export ban due to avian influenza,
BIEN DONNÉ AGRI CAPE WEEK 2012
and the prospects of more months to come before
the ban is lifted, the industry is fighting for survival. The
ostrich industry has two choices: It can be a passive
observer in its own demise, become obsolete, and
disappear; or, it can change for sustainability.
Knowing our farmers, I am confident the ostrich industry
will face up to the challenges, and change for
sustainability. Producers and service providers from
the entire agricultural community will also be able to
learn from their experience. But, once again, knowing
our farmers, I know they can face up to these challenges.
It is after all nothing new, as we all grew up
with the saying:
“`n Boer
Maak `n
Plan”
D
ie tema van die Bien Donné Agri Cape Week
2012 is: “Verandering vir Volhoubaarheid/
Change for sustainability”. Voorwaar ‘n aktuele
Change is not a simplistic matter; it had been debated
for centuries. Change is also not something for tomorrow,
no, it is for now. It became part of our lifestyle and
if you are not ready to accommodate it in yours, it can
cost you.
Ellen Glasgow, an American novelist, said as a word
of caution: “all change is not growth, as all movement
is not forward”. Irrational change can indeed be a serious
setback and threat.
Daar is dus nie resepte
waarop teruggeval kan word nie. Kreatiwiteit en
aangepaste denkprosesse is ‘n noodsaaklikheid.
denke. It is not about agriculture, it’s not about land
reform, and it’s not about politics – no – it is all about
a growing world population and its needs. It’s about
people and their needs. It’s about people and a safe
environment and food security. It’s about resources
and the availability thereof to meet the needs of
people.
Hierdie is slegs ‘n
Too many change scenarios are built around political
aspirations, personal gain and short term selfish aims.
Verandering benodig goed deurdagte beplanning
waarin kundigheid, navorsing en ondervinding ingaan.
In Suid-Afrika sal daar verál ‘n houdingsverandering
sake soos rassepolitiek, kinderagtige politieke
Change for sustainability
needs a long-term
vision, needs excellent
leadership, needs
creativity.
The Agri Mega Group (AMG)’s vision is to be the preferred
instrument for change and delivery towards
sustainable agricultural practises. Bien Donné Agri
Cape Week is one of the major projects of the Group,
which in partnership with the ARC and other important
stakeholders, like the Western Cape Department
of Agriculture, is presented to realistically meet our vision.
This event creates a platform to debate, to inform,
to demonstrate, to exhibit, to network towards
change in the agricultural environment. The contribution
of this event can be the start of big outputs
towards strategy and creativity for food security and
change for sustainability.
To change for the sake of a better future for all, seems
like the right thing to do. May the theme and the activities
of Bien Donné Agri Cape Week inspire you to
make your contribution towards change for sustainability.
ARC perspective on the
Bien Donné Agri Cape Week
Dr. S.R. Moephuli
ARC PRESIDENT & CEO
T
he ARC is pleased to partner with the Agri
Mega Group in hosting the Bien Donné Agri
Cape Week Expo! The Expo represents the
best of showcasing agricultural innovation. This year
the Expo is presented by the ARC and its partners,
the Agri Mega Group for the second time. We believe
that by bringing this exhibit, we present our commitment
to the communities, showcasing what could be
achieved in agriculture through innovation and hard
work.
Once again, the Expo will present different ways in
which agricultural transformation is occurring, particularly
the increased participation of growers, farm workers,
exhibitors, the youth and especially small farmers
and land reform beneficiaries.
As partners we believe that by
encouraging the participation
of a broad range of stakeholders
we demonstrate a commitment
to a vibrant and energetic
agricultural community
that aims to grow the nation.
As the ARC, we believe it’s important to regularly and
continually engage with the communities and all our
stakeholders. We are committed to providing excellence
in our service, particularly in research and de-
velopment. This Expo serves as one of the mechanisms
through which the ARC releases the results of
its research. For this reason, you will find a number of
exhibits by the ARC on what we’ve achieved in our
research and development efforts. Our hope is that
you will take the opportunity at this Expo to engage
with our scientists and researchers to find out about
the new technologies, innovations and information in
agriculture for the success of your enterprise.
The ARC as the owner of this historic site of the Bien
Donné Research Farm, and its partner, Agri Mega
Group, hereby express our gratitude to the sponsors
who made it possible to host this expo. We also thank
all the participants for their support in making it a success
in 2012. We hope that you learn something, enjoy
Making the economic
drivers of change work
for agriculture
Nico Loock,
Provincial Agricultural
Manager:
Standard Bank
Western Cape
www.agrimega.co.za
T
his year’s Bien Donné Agri Cape Week’s theme
of ‘Change for Sustainability’ is seminal to the
future of agriculture in South Africa.
Sustainability is about ensuring business continuity,
and to achieve it, a business needs to be flexible. This
may mean interrupting continuity; doing things differently
to achieve better and lasting results.
Standard Bank Provincial Agricultural Manager in the
Western Cape, Nico Loock says: “Standard Bank has
prospered for 150 years precisely because it has always
adapted its products and services to new and
changing circumstances.”
“Supporting agricultural players looking for new markets
and wanting to diversify their operations, is as important
to us now as it was when we first started providing
loans to sheep farmers in the Eastern Cape 150
years ago.” Mr Loock says that the Western Cape’s
wine industry, in particular, could benefit by diversifying
from traditional markets.
“The Euro crisis and the recent economic downturn
have made American and European wine drinkers
look for more affordable wine options, putting pressure
on the South African wine industry to develop
new marketing strategies and reconfigure logistics to
expand beyond traditional markets.
“Because of Standard Bank’s strong presence in 17
African countries, we know that Africa represents a
vast new market for specialised products, such as
wine and fruit. Minister in the Presidency, Trevor Manuel,
also identified the tilt in the economic centre of
gravity from West to East in the global economy as
one of the six major drivers of change for South Africa.
BIEN DONNÉ AGRI CAPE WEEK 2012
It makes sense then for our wine and fruit industries to
also look to exploring markets in the east.”
In fact, the Bien Donné Agri Cape Week’s ‘Change for
Sustainability’ theme is extremely apt in light of Minister
Manuel’s six drivers of change: the tilt in the economic
centre of gravity from West to East, interconnectivity,
globalisation, technology, the rise of Africa, and climate
change.
“Agricultural sustainability will rest on its ability to turn
these drivers to its advantage. As a significant player
in the value chain, we see it as our responsibility to
make such change work for agri businesses,” says
Mr Loock.
“Standard Bank’s Agriculture division provides advice
through dedicated agricultural economists, and practical
assistance through specialised products and
services that are tailor-made for the industry at large,
as well as for individual farmers and agricultural businesses.
We are ideally positioned to make change
work because we are fully aligned with the six drivers
of change.”
Standard Bank anticipated the West to East shift several
years in advance, obtaining the Industrial and
Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) as a majority partner
in 2005, thereby enabling it to facilitate market linkages
for its customers at the time and moving into
the future.
It has a strong presence in Africa as well as offices
on each of the other continents. It has been an early
adopter of technologies that provide customers with
online, 24/7 self-service facilities. Today, it leads the
field in remote and rural banking facilities, as well as
mobile and inclusive banking.
“Sponsoring Bien Donné
Agri Cape Week is our
way of reminding South
African agriculture that
we know how to harvest
change and process it
into sustainability.”
The bank also extends the concept of technology
beyond computing and connectivity to concepts and
practices such as precision farming, satellite technologies
in tractors, and whatever else is needed to
make commercial farming sustainably more productive.
Its products are designed to encourage the purpose-driven
use of technology.
“The Bien Donné Agri Cape Week plays a vital role
here in acting as a bridge between research, technology
transfer, and practical agriculture,” Mr Loock
says.
The real value of value
chains in Change and
Sustainability in Agriculture:
The Farmsecure way
A
ll the resources that we need to sustain ourselves
as a human race are either mined or
farmed, making these the two most relevant
industries of our time, says Jerome Yazbek, CEO
Farmsecure.
The 21st Century has been defined by an ever increasing
global population and the struggle to manage
the planet’s resources to sustain the human
race’s growth. In recent years, agriculture has gone
from obscurity, seen as irrelevant, high risk and unsustainable,
to the next big thing. Why? Because
agriculture, when viewed and practiced holistically,
can provide solutions to all of the above mentioned
challenges facing man. In 2004, Jerome Yazbek was
approached by a group of maize farmers in the Free
State, and the question they posed to him was simple:
“Is it possible to create a business model that
will make agriculture both sustainable and profitable?”
Simply answered the answer was ‘yes’. During its inception,
Farmsecure developed a model founded on
four basic principles that encapsulates the pillars of its
agricultural value chain.
• Scientific farming
• Working capital
• Risk mitigation and
• Price guarantee
These four principles are the base of Farmsecure’s
holistic approach to the industry. Through time, the
practice of these principles led Farmsecure to the
BIEN DONNÉ AGRI CAPE WEEK 2012
realization that agricultural profit, like that of mining,
lies in the power of a complete value chain which is
integrated from ‘soil to shelf’. Sustainability and profitability
does not lie in one piece of the pie, but rather in
maximizing the pie as a whole.
Due to its belief in the power of an optimized value
chain, Farmsecure never desired to be a market player
in one agricultural sector, but has resolved to be
represented throughout the industry, maximizing potential
for increased profit back to farm level.
Farmsecure is represented in agricultural inputs, primary
agriculture and agricultural outputs, with primary
agriculture or ‘the farm’ at its core.
The population faces three
core challenges today, namely
food, water and job creation.
All of these factors highlight the
importance and the need for
sustainable and profitable agricultural
enterprises globally.
By being represented throughout the agricultural value
chain, Farmsecure and its family of companies ensure
that its producers and farming operations are sustainable
and profitable in a very tangible way, achieving its
vision to contribute to solutions that will address the
core challenges facing man.
The importance of a profitable and sustainable wine
industry can therefore not be overstated by VinPro and
its wine producer members.
While the wine industry is under more financial pressure
than ever before – due to sharp rising production
costs, international and domestic market pressure – a
growing number of producers are quickly adapting to
remain profitable.
trellis systems and technology to increase production
while maintaining quality. They keep meticulous
records and align all costs and practices with the
wine goal of a specific block. But most of all, they are
plugged into a network of information transfer, staying
on top of the latest viticultural and technological
developments.
In its quest for a sustainable and participative wine
producer community, VinPro assists these members
in streamlining their businesses from the viticultural
practices to finances and BEE. VinPro’s shareholding
in Vititec and FarmMS ensures top quality plant material
and specialised information management systems
going forward.
Through liaison with Government, VinPro also voices
its members’ concerns on issues such as liquor legislation,
excise and illicit trade.
VinPro further collaborates with other wine industry
role-players to create a platform for information transfer,
such as the VinPro/Winetech Technical Information
Day and a discussion by our BEE specialist at the
workshop on Sustainable Transformation on 20 April,
which are both not to be missed.
The fact that the Bien Donné Agri Cape Week 2012
Hieroor kan die Rooivleisbedryf
positief wees
John Durr
Voorsitter RPO
Wes-Kaap
D
ie nasionale Rooivleisprodusente-organisasie
dieet.
• Sowat 40% van alle vee behoort aan ontwikkelende
produsente. Verhoogde effektiwiteit in dié sektor kan
produksie drasties verhoog. Die RPO en die Nasionale
Opkomende Rooivleisprodusente-organisasie
Sean Walsh
Besturende Direkteur
Kaap Agri
D
ie Bien Donné Agri Cape Week 2012 is gewortel
Net soos Bien Donné, strek Kaap Agri se ryke geskiedenis
aktiwiteite hierop moet deurlopend in ag geneem
is.
aan opkomende boere sowel as plaaswerkers.
betekenisvol moet wees.
How do we go about
creating a thriving greenhouse
industry in South Africa?
Leensie Streicher
AMG Media &
Promotions
S
outh-Africa has a 34 year history of greenhouse
crop production in South Africa. Initially
growers and Stellenbosch University
(Professors Laubscher and Maree) worked together,
researching problems and developing solutions for
the greenhouse industry. However, research in this
industry have been hampered by lack of funding as
no statutory levy is placed on the sales of vegetables
and researchers receive very limited funding from the
private or public sectors.
Dr. Petrus Langenhoven of ASNAPP (Agribusiness
in sustainable natural African plant products) said at
the 2011 Bien Donné Agri Cape Week, that IASA presented
many symposia and workshops in the past
to disseminate information that has been developed
in South Africa and abroad. With limited funding local
researchers and researchers from abroad made
BIEN DONNÉ AGRI CAPE WEEK 2012
exchange visits.
“In the past several attempts were made by IASA to
support institutions of higher learning. However, funding
was always limited and therefore did not contribute
considerably to research and training”.
Langenhoven furthermore said that the industry is
fragmented. “Grower associations using similar technology
to produce vegetables, flowers and seedlings
are not working together.”
According to him Stellenbosch University has the
strongest under and postgraduate academic program
in greenhouse crop production, but even with
their contribution, very few young agronomists are
being trained and the average age of growers are increasing.
There are also many young inexperienced
growers, very limited research and the development
of local solutions (technology) is limited.
All is not lost though and Langenhoven also suggested
actions that could help to create a thriving
greenhouse industry in South Africa. He suggested
the following:
• Multi-disciplinary process involving many
actors;
• Market first, science-based agribusiness
development approach;
• Creating networking platforms to bring
businesses together;
• Value Chain Approach;
• Creating strategic partnerships;
• Public-private partnerships, e.g. ARC,
NDA, DTI;
• Private sector relationships;
Sustainable greenhouse production
in South Africa means that production
must double, whilst leaving only half the
ecological footprint by reducing environmental
degradation and optimising the
efficiency of inputs (energy, water, minerals,
crop protection) within economic
constraints (profitability). New techniques
and concepts should also be explored
and adopted.
As a way forward, engagement with
growers should be continued and student
training must be supported more.
Producers should create partnerships
and work together in ensuring quality extension
services.
Hoe pas ROOIVLEIS by
die hedendaagse dieet in?
Prof. Hettie Schönfeldt,
Bestuurder - Administrasie:
Rooivleis
Navorsing en Ontwikkeling
Suid-Afrika
(RMRDSA).
O
voorkomende rolle by baie siektes soos obesiteit,
hartsiekte, diabetes, en kanker, speel.
Die inname van ‘n groot verskeidenheid voedingstofryke
kosse, insluitend maer rooivleis, as deel van ‘n
Is rooivleis gepas as ek probeer gewig verloor?
‘n positiewe rol speel in gewigsbeheer, deurdat
Wenk: Om die energiebydrae so laag as moontlik te
En as ek swanger is?
jou baba.
maer Suid-Afrikaanse skaapvleis (80-90g) verskaf net
soveel yster as een heelgraan brood of twee blikkies
sousbone.
Hoe baat bejaardes by rooivleis?
- Energiebehoeftes neem gewoonlik af met toene-
BIEN DONNÉ AGRI CAPE WEEK 2012
mende ouderdom, veral as fisiese aktiwiteit beperk
- Bloedarmoede kom algemeen in ouer volwassenes
Veranderinge
in die spysverteringskanaal, bloedverlies en
die gebruik van sekere geneesmiddels, asook swak
dieetinname, het dit tot gevolg. Rooivleis is ‘n goeie
kos inneem. Voedsel met ‘n hoë voedingstofdigtheid,
soos Suid-Afrikaanse lams- en skaapvleis,
verskaf “baie in min”.
word.
- Vier voedingstowwe (yster, sink, proteïen en vitamien
B12) het spesiale aandag nodig.
- As vleis met plantaardige proteïene, soos peulgroente
- Meer as 30% vir proteïen, sink, vitamien B3 (niasien)
en vitamien B12.
- Meer as 10% vir yster.
Suid-Afrika
se gemiddelde jaarlikse reënval is slegs 470mm per
Minimum- of geengrondbewerkingsmetodes
help om gronderosie as
komponente bestaan, naamlik dekgewasse, geenbewerking
Mechanisation and Water:
An Odd Couple
Compiled by
Doug Momberg
AMG Media &
Promiotions
T
he connection between water and mechanisation
is not one that first meets the eye. However,
deeper inspection into the relationship
between the two highlights some interesting insights.
It is important to realise that agriculture is the largest
extractor of water resources, accounting for an estimated
70% of all water consumption worldwide.
A striking fact regarding water availability in the SADC
countries is that the per capita water availability, which
is already low, is expected to reduce by half by the
year 2025. This is further compounded by the realisation
that the water basins that make agriculture possible
in South Africa are all shared with our regional
neighbours. Agriculture, as by far the largest water
extractor, is therefore poised to lead the way in addressing
and determining the management and governance
of these resources, before it is done on their
behalf. Agriculture in this sense stands to gain, and
potentially loose the most, if this is not addressed.
For this to take place, a keen understanding is required
about aspects and effects of water usage
practices and the various ways that consumption
can be limited. The international trade in agricultural
commodities at the same time constitutes a trade with
water in virtual form. Below is a table that displays the
waterfootprint of a number of products, which demonstrates
the dire need to conserve water where possible,
in order to maintain the capacity to produce the
food products that society relies on.
Invasive alien vegetation that is, in other words, not
indigenous to the region, are highly detrimental to
agricultural water usage. Black Wattle, for instance,
uses 6000m3/ha/annum, while Vines, on the other
hand, utilise 4500m3/ha/annum. Furthermore, 55%
stream-flow reductions in fynbos catchments have
been reported, 23 years after planting pines. The replacement
of grasslands with pines and eucalyptus
in Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and Northern Province,
has resulted in streams completely drying up
6-12 years after planting. Combatting this scourge
highlights the first of the relationship between wa-
BIEN DONNÉ AGRI CAPE WEEK 2012
ter and mechanisation. Eradication of invasive alien
vegetation can be approached through a number of
techniques. The most effective means is the cutting
down of the offending vegetation; a number of products
and services are available ranging from handheld
and chain saws to private contractors. Recycling
of the wood can take the form of either chipping for
mulch or firewood.
Earth moving and tillage also have implications for the
water on farms. The laws of displacement come into
effect through the moving of soil. When soil is moved
from one place to another, the water table adjusts accordingly.
This can be either to one’s detriment or manipulated
to your advantage. An understanding of the
water resources in the production area can therefore
be a major benefit.
Irrigation is probably the most obvious connection
between mechanisation and water usage. Efficient irrigation
regiments are imperative for the sustainable
preservation of water resources. Considering the agricultural
irrigation practices in regions where water is
particularly scarce, can provide insights into the possible
alternatives and improvements that can systematically
be brought about. Drip irrigation, for instance,
has proven to be highly effective in the water scarce
Middle East, with significant increases in production
yields.
The particular methods that are employed to best utilise
and preserve the water resources available are,
of course, dependent on the particular production
requirements. The need, however to consider adjustments
and adaptations to the manner in which water
is exploited is already imperative, and will only become
more necessary as time goes by.
The aforementioned is also supported with the realisation
that food and human security are both inextricably
dependent on water security.
AQUACHECK SOIL MOISTURE PROBES
Rising input costs in general, consistent and historic high annual Eskom tariff increases and continuous pressure on profitability and
sustainability in irrigated agriculture have necessitated an in-depth rethink of how we are going to manage our resources if we are to
overcome today’s challenges in irrigation farming.
Authorities on sustainability in agriculture all agree that a much needed increase in efficiency and subsequent improved ways in dealing
with our scarce resources, hold the key if irrigated agriculture is to prevail in future generations. There are many factors in irrigation farming
like high energy cost, water scarcity, expensive fertilizer and other input costs, which continue to squeeze the margins of the irrigation
farmer today. Every action taken on the irrigation farm needs to be scrutinised and benchmarked against efficiency norms.
AquaCheck’s roots in South African irrigation industry go back to 1995 and in 2005 AquaCheck and business associates launched South
Africa’s first independent continuous logging soil moisture probe. This initial continuous logging probe created a paradigm shift in day-today
on-farm irrigation scheduling practices.
Today, AquaCheck probes are available in 5 continents and offer a wide range of probe lengths, types and interface options. We aim
to satisfy specific needs and probe lengths vary from 200 to 1500mm. Sensors are spaced 100mm apart for the shorter probes. The
diameter of all our probes is 32mm. With its patented design, and unique construction, moisture contamination on electronic components
inside the probe, has effectively been eliminated.
Our probes have passed the following international standards:
• FCC (Federal Communications Commission USA);
• CE (European Countries); and
• IC (Industry Canada).
Different options are available to transfer the data from the probe to the computer:
• Hand logger;
• Short distance telemetry; and
• Network and GPRS based independent telemetry units.
AquaCheck has state of the art software package available consisting of:
• CropGraph Pro:
This is the main software package installed on a client’s computer with a server-based database.
• CropGraph Online:
This is the internet browser version of the program. The client uses a username and password to get access to the data and real-time
irrigation recommendations on the internet. The main advantage of this program is that both the farmer and his consultants can view the
same data at the same time and therefore improving efficiency and latency in the decision making process.
AquaCheck is proud to be part of an initiative to increase irrigation water-use efficiency on 5 continents and thus making a contribution
and difference world-wide.
Harvest Indicator:
Berry Sugar Loading
Doug Momberg
AMG Media &
Promiotions
S
ugar loading refers to the progression of sugar
quantity, expressed in mg, per berry, from véraison
onwards. This research conducted by
Prof. Alain Deloire, heralds a novel and discerning approach
to harvest practices. Sugar loading provides
an indication of the ripening process and provides
a practical indication for the harvesting of particular
grapes and wine. Sugar loading in the berry, in conjunction
with changes in the dynamics of sugar concentration,
are important in determining grape quality.
Three predominant sugar loading profiles can be
identified:
1. Continual and Rapid Loading
Concerned with the active functioning of carbon production
sources, such as leaves, is often associated
with vegetative growth and significantly greater berry
volumes.
2. Slow Sugar Loading – Inhibition of Ripening
Low sugar content is indicative of ‘blocked’ ripening
and an imbalance in the vine. Blocked ripening
can be attributed to a number of factors ranging from
physiological problems such as mineral deficiencies,
and viral diseases to excessive water shortages, and
extreme crop load.
Niks is onmoontlik nie
Trotse verskaer van kwaliteit Rielkartonne.
BIEN DONNÉ AGRI CAPE WEEK 2012
3. Sugar Loading Presenting a Plateau Phase
This is suggestive of an active phase of sugar loading
in the berry, followed by a plateau, indicating a cessation
of sugar loading and corresponding maturity.
The concept of Berry Aromatic Sequence (B.A.S)
selection of a harvest date can be greatly facilitated
by the incorporation of B.A.S, in conjunction with additional
indicators such as: titratable acidity, malic and
tartaric acids, pH, berry volume, berry tasting, tannins,
anthocyanins, and the like. For example, in order to
achieve a balanced red wine, complete ripeness will
be achieved between one and five weeks after sugar
loading has ceased. Once the sugar loading plateau
has been reached, as incited by various cultivar and
environmental conditions, the ripening process can
be further quantified in order to gauge the best harvest
date, so as to produce the best possible wine.
This research provides a greater understanding of the
finer nuances of the vine’s physiological and morphological
parameters, which influence the quality of the
final product.
Prof. Alain Deloire will once again be addressing
this topic during the VinPro Information Day at
Bien Donné Agri Cape Week 2012.
Example: Sugar Loading Calculation
For a berry ripeness level of 25 °brix:
Convert 25° brix into probable alcohol.
25 x 0.59 = 14.75° (where 0.59 is the coefficient
used for yeast activity to convert
brix into probable alcohol)
Determine mg of sugar per berry:
To obtain 1° probable alcohol, 17g/L of
sugar is required.
14.75° x 17g/L = 250.75 g/L (which is
equivalent to 250mg of sugar per ml
Calculate quantity of sugar per berry:
The measurement of °brix should be calculated
in conjunction with the volume,
as per its fresh mass. Approximately 50
berries should be used in order to determine
the population average.
250mg x volume of a berry
rganic agriculture is a holistic production
management system which promotes and
enhances agro-ecosystems, health, including
biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological
activity. It emphasises the use of management practices
in preference to the use of off-farm inputs. This is
accomplished by using, where possible, agronomic,
biological, and mechanical methods, as opposed to
using synthetic materials, to fulfil any specific function
within the system.“ - Definition proposed for adoption
by FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission.
Organic farming is one of several approaches to sustainable
agriculture. Indeed, many of the techniques
used in organic farming - such as inter-cropping,
mulching, and integration of crops and livestock -
are practiced under various agricultural systems.
What makes organic agriculture unique is that, under
various laws and certification programmes, almost all
synthetic inputs are prohibited and “soil building“ crop
rotations are mandatory.
Although still only a small industry, organic agriculture
is becoming of growing importance in the agriculture
sectors of many countries, irrespective of their stage
of development.
Making the Switch
Organic farmers face huge uncertainties. Lack of information
is a major obstacle to organic conversion.
Typically, farmers experience some loss in yields after
discarding synthetic inputs and converting their operations to
organic production. Before restoration of full biological activity
(e.g. growth in beneficial insect populations, nitrogen fixation
from legumes), pest suppression and fertility problems are
common. Sometimes it may take years to restore the ecosystem
to the point where organic production is possible. In
these cases other sustainable approaches that allow judicious
use of synthetic chemicals, may be more suitable startup
options. One strategy involves converting farms to organic
production “in instalments“, so that the entire operation is not
put at risk.
Most organic farmers are motivated by more than economic
objectives - their aim is to optimize land, animal, and plant
interactions, preserve natural nutrient and energy flows, and
enhance biodiversity, all of which contribute to sustainable
agriculture.
Counteracting Climate Change
Be as it may, organic farming offers the potential to reduce
the emissions of agricultural greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide,
nitrous oxide and methane) and their annual external
costs. Organic farming additionally offers the highly significant
potential to counter climate change through the development
of the soil as a major carbon sink. Organic farming
has the potential to:
• Reduce CO2 emissions. (Emissions from organic farming
are 40-60% lower per hectare than conventional systems)
• Maintain and increase soil organic material, if developed as
a CO2 bank which could absorb 15 years’ worth of emissions
from fossil fuels.
• May reduce nitrous oxide and methane emissions, because
livestock densities are lower (much more research in
this regard is however needed).
•Improve air quality: Air contamination from agriculture is
mainly from pesticide sprays and ammonia volatisation
(NH3). Organic farming should address both of these:
- Pesticide sprays: Synthetic pesticides are not used in organic
farming.
- Ammonia: Agriculture accounts for about 80% of UK ammonia
emissions, which causes nutrient enrichment and acidification
of soils.
• Emissions in organic farming should be lower, because of
the non-use of N fertilizers and because manure from farms
often has a lower concentration of nitrogen. Composting can
release relatively high levels depending on its composition,
but it reduces the amount when manures are spread.
• Conserve water: Higher soil organic matter resulting from
organic farming, increases water retention
and reduces run-off; reducing the
need for irrigation.
• Reduce nutrient leaching: Inorganic
N fertilizer used for conventional farming
is the most mobile form of nitrogen of
which about 20% is lost after application.
In organic systems inorganic N and P is
prohibited and nutrient inputs are through
organic matter, where two thirds of the N
is in an organic form, which is chemically
more stable.
• Prevent pesticide contamination of
ground and surface water by non-use of
synthetic pesticides.
• Reduce sediment run-off and bacterial
leaching as the level of soil organic matter
increases.
• Reduce the risk of flooding due to higher
levels of organic matter in soils on organic
farms, which results in better water
retention and drainage.

Sustainability of Small Farmers
Ismail Motala
Farmer
S
Verskaffer van Kwaliteit Versinkte
Draad en Omheiningsprodukte
mall Farmers are vital for South Africa’s agricultural
and rural economy. The definition
of ‘small farmers’ has been synonymously
linked to the new generation of black farmers that has
emerged since 1994.
Government has over years put in place legislation,
policies and discussion documents regarding the
development of black farmers in the post-Apartheid
South Africa. Academic institutions and civil society
have played a vital role in the development of much of
the discussions and policies pertaining to black farmers
in South Africa.
It is not the policy, as such, but the budgetary, technical
and administrative implementation of the specific
policy that falls short and needs to be adjusted
to generate positive impact for black farmers. Policy
BIEN DONNÉ AGRI CAPE WEEK 2012
instruments and institutional arrangements have to
be designed and built in a technically feasible and effective
way for the objective of poverty reduction and
food security to be reached.
Policies and programmes to lessen poverty and food
insecurity and to enhance equity and sustainability of
incomes and livelihoods, should seek to achieve agriculture-led,
broad-based economic development.
This can only be realized when black farmers are empowered
to access the crucial production resources.
These resources are: land, water, energy, funding,
technology, and opportunities to develop the skills
and to access information and fair markets for products
and inputs.
Given the national policies that facilitate access to
such resources, there would be great expectation
that small farmers could and would achieve higher
production and income and that the livelihoods of
small farmer families and rural economies would be
enhanced.
he challenges facing emerging black farmers
within the Western Cape are immense. Constantly
changing political regimes, access to
finance, education, training & availability of reasonably
priced land are all constraints that inhibit previously
disadvantaged farmers. Personal apathy is often the
result of these constraints that leave would-be farmers
disenchanted, un-empowered and discouraged from
entering the agricultural sector. Potential emerging entrepreneurs
critical to the economic future of South Africa
are as a result dissuaded from becoming farmers.
Seda is at the forefront of providing a platform specifically
aimed at assisting small scale agriculturalists and
entrepreneurs within the agri sector.
With true sustainability being a core principle within
Seda, it is critical that solid long-term relationships be-
Gee jou kunsmisprogram woema
met P&B Landboukalk.
P&B Landboukalk is die natuur se eie grondopknapper.
Dit maak die grondtoestande perfek vir
Jou kunsmisprogram raak daadwerklik meer
doeltreffend. Dis omdat die
grond se pH-vlak bepaal
hoeveel stikstof, kalsium,
fosfaat en ander voedingstowwe
beskikbaar is vir die plant om op
te neem.
Voeg jy kalk by, verhoog jy
vinniger vrystel. So word meer fosfor en stikstof
beskikbaar vir die plant.
Kunsmis is dikwels suur. Gevolglik versuur dit die
grond, wat dan die vrystelling van voedingstowwe
kniehalter.
farming communities in the Western, Eastern and Southern Cape
provinces, as well as in the Free State and surrounding areas.
In herd health, various aspects play a role in the ability to produce healthy
animals, from the reproduction cycle to raising young animals that in turn
will become the breeding stock or the source of healthy food production.
Tests done to ensure optimal reproduction are:
Sheath wash samples to test for Campylobacter foetus and
Tritrichomonas fetus (eg. PCR tests on PBS samples give more
accurate and faster results).
Udder health – testing of milk samples for pathogens to ensure healthy
milk, and
Laboratory investigation into abortions, stillbirths and failure to
conceive.
The tests done include bacteriology, histological examination of foetal
tissues and placenta, molecular tests for infectious agents such as viral,
protozoal and bacterial diseases, and serology tests on affected dams.
Tests done to ensure optimal growth include:
Trace element analyses on serum or liver samples to determine
possible deficiencies or excesses in the feed or grazing.
Tests on blood for metabolic conditions in high producing dairy
animals to identify subclinical diseases which may lead to drop in milk
production.
Internal parasite investigation, and
Testing for bacterial and viral disease in neonatal and other animals.
Tests done to ensure biosecurity:
Laboratory tests can be used to identify infectious diseases that may
A major step to increase the technical service level provided to clients was
taken when Dr. Pieter Raath was appointed as the new laboratory
manager in April 2012. The combination of being a soil scientist with a
strong chemistry and viticulture background, as well as having worked
both as an academic and producer, qualifies him to address all the
aspects related to Bemlab's services. He has considerable experience in
the environmental management industry and played a key role in
developing sustained farming principles for a number of companies,
including some of the major retail groups.
Bemlab's quality service and technical support will be maintained and
broadened to new levels not previously available in agricultural analytical
services, both local, as well as national.
our vision
An united, responsive and prosperous agricultural sector in balance with
nature
Climate Change Challenge
The effect of climate change on agriculture in the Western Cape will be one of
the major determinants of the sustainability of this sector and the competitiveness
of its farmers. The Department will therefore not only focus its research efforts on
high output low input production practises, but will also actively focus and pursue
agricultural practices that will lead to adaptation and mitigation of climate change.
The service delivery agenda of the Department will therefore in future also include
decision making support with relation to the choice of farming activity, the optimal
use of natural resources, the promotion of conservation, agricultural practises and
more efficient use of water, by both commercial and small holder farmers. This will
be all in an effort to increase agricultural production in a sustainable and profitable
way.
Importance of Research
Research and technology development is pivotal to the sustainability and
profitability of the agricultural sector, especially since our farmers are producing in
the global context with a new playing field and many new rules and regulations.
Competitiveness is key to our agricultural successes, especially in the context of
increased exports and foreign income. The Department of Agriculture Western
Cape is committed to supporting our farmers with cutting edge technology,
researched and developed by its group of experts in a wide range of disciplines.
The research capacity of the Department also includes three research institutes and
seven research farms.
Importance of Training
Adequately skilled people is critical for sustainable development. The multitude of
challenges we face can only be resolved if people have an appropriate knowledge
and skills base. Education and training also has a direct effect on economic
development and societal well-being at large. Training also contributes significantly
to employee satisfaction which in turn, contributes to increased profitability of the
business.
Knowledge is power and opens doors to many opportunities.
Importance of Development
Agricultural Development is a non-negotiable imperative for spurring growth,
overcoming poverty and enhancing Food Security. Furthermore, agricultural
productivity growth is vital for stimulating growth in other parts of the economy. With
rising production costs, water scarcity and the added pressure of a globalising world,
the future of agriculture is tied to better stewardship of natural resources. Lastly,
agricultural development is of enormous importance for local food production and
livelihoods. (World Development Report: World Bank, 2008)
