CONTINENTAL KNITTING
Class Description: Knitting Continental style involves holding the yarn in your left hand and
“picking” it, as opposed to holding the yarn in your right hand and “throwing” it (English style).
When you hold the yarn in your right hand, you have to let go of your knitting in order to
“throw” the yarn around the needle when making a stitch. You also have to let go of your
knitting in order to bring the yarn forward or back between the needles when switching between
knitting and purling (when ribbing, for example). When you hold the yarn in your left hand, you
never have to let go of your needles.
If you’re interested in knitting more comfortably or with greater speed, this class is for you! This
is also an important skill to know for two-handed color knitting.
Materials: Worsted weight yarn and size 7 or 8 needles
Level: Beginner
Instructor: Iryth Ferrandino
CRANBERRY CAPELET BY THEA COLMAN
Class Description: A fun and intuitive knit! A perfect project when you don't want to commit
to knitting an adult sweater. This is a beautiful capelet that is meant to end at your elbows and to
keep your arms free. Wear it out to show it off or keep yourself toasty around the house. A
cable runs down the center (both in the front and back) with ribs on either side of the seams.
Top-down construction means you can try it on as you go!
Materials: 700-1200 yards worsted-weight yarn, size 7 circular needles - 16” for the neck & at
least 29” for body; cable needle, tapestry needle, stitch markers; pattern ($6 download). Please
download and print pattern before class from http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cranberrycapelet
Level: Advanced Beginner
Homework: Swatch first to get gauge of 5 stitches/inch. Before class: Sizing based on bust
measurement: S(32-36), M(38-42), L(44-50). Cast on 110(114, 118) stitches with smaller
needle. Work first row FLAT in K1, P1 ribbing. Join being careful not to twist, and place marker
at beginning of next round. Please note: The pattern says to knit 8” for the turtleneck. When you
wear the capelet, you will be folding this in half. If you prefer a shorter turtleneck, you may only
want to knit 6-7” instead.
Instructor: Iryth Ferrandino
