LEROS
A WALKER‘S GUIDE
10 Walking Trails
to the Most Beautiful Locations
on the Island
2
Welcome to Leros
This island of verdant green mountain
ridges, fresh springs and Mediterranean
woods remains much as it was, and
has always been, the island of Artemis,
Goddess of the Hunt. Green plains
of oak,eucalyptus and pine stretch
down to the sea. This friendly, peaceful
landscape together with the island´s
climate offer rest and relaxation for
body and soul to all who visit. Leros has
been blessed by nature with rich and
distinctive scenery. Deep blue, crystal
clear waters, clean beaches and the
mountains with their lush growth invite
the adventurous walker to explore. The
island has much to impress the visitor:
an imposing fortress, grand neo-classical
mansions, romantic harbours and
the main port of Lakki with its unique
art-deco style, one of only three locations
in the Mediterranean region to
have preserved an entire town in this
striking architecture.
We invite you to explore the wonderful
scenic variety of this island on 10
routes , selected for their outstanding
beauty. They represent only a fraction
of the island´s many hiking opportunities..
We hope you enjoy them and will be
inspired to explore …and to find your
own favourites.
Leros - the green, fertile island of the Dodecanese
Leros has been blessed with a mild
Mediterranean climate, mild rainy winters
and warm, dry summers.
To experience nature in all its glory,
walking at Easter time will surely show
you the very best the island has to
offer.
While the air can be fresh at times, the
landscape is radiant with dazzling hues
of deep greens, reds and yellows. The
houses are freshly-painted and form a
delightful contrast to the landscape.
The water temperatures are still too
cool for most swimmers and some
hotels & restaurants are not yet open.
But by late May, the waters have been
warmed by the sun to a comfortable
temperature and the island begins to
awaken from its winter sleep…a glorious
time for hiking…perhaps the best.
The high season of July and August is
4
Cypress
Aleppo-Pine
Hibiscus
Fig
Bellflower
not recommended for hiking.
Although the steady north winds cool
the temperatures to a bearable level,
the midday hours are best spent in the
comfortable shade of a tree or in a
cool taverna by the sea.
The comfortable temperatures and
calm air from September to mid-October
make this period ideal for hiking.
The island shines in resplendent autumn
colours, while the island´s countryside
hums with the pleasant buzz of
activity…the hustle & bustle of the olive
harvest.
The Dodecanese islands are very fertile
as the mountains of Asia Minor across
the strait bring winter rainfall. In Leros,
the visitor can find many small wooded
areas of Aleppo Pine and Stone
Oak while the beaches are lined with
small, feathery tamarisk trees, nature´s
Bougainvillea
Cranesbill
Daisies
Caesalpinia
Ginster Pine
Almond Tree
Olivetrees
Hyacinth
Anemone Agave Sourgras Cactus pear
natural umbrellas.
Sycamore, cypress, eucalyptus, carob
and mulberry are all native to Leros.
Among the fruit-bearing species are
fig, pomegranate, orange and lemon
trees. The olive trees have stood here
for centuries.
Agaves and prickly-pear with their
delicious and fragrant fruit line many of
the roadsides. Even on the dry mountain
slopes, small shrubs, thorny bushes,
heather and knapweed flourish.
In the Spring, the wild flowers provide a
dazzling display. Even at the beginning
of the year, anenomes, crocuses and
enchanting broom bathe the landscape
in a sea of crimson, white, yellow
and purple.
With a little good fortune, the observant
hiker may even discover tiny, wild
orchids which bloom then fade all too
quickly.
By June as the flowers in bloom are
drawing to a close, extravagant bougainvillea,
oleander & hibiscus make
their grand entrance.
During the drowsy heat of the day, the
intoxicating scent of wild lavender, rosemary,
thyme, oregano and chamomile
beguiles the senses. The trails are
lined with sage, capers and other wild
herbs. The first showers of late summer
and early autumn refresh the hillsides
and their vegetation after the months
of withering heat.
For hikers and nature lovers, Leros has
something to offer at any season. Yearround,
the island´s landscape, culture
and the warmth of her people cast a
spell that is hard to resist.
Once under that spell, the visitor finds
himself returning again and again.
Start this walk at the “Kamara” car dealership
on the main road from Alinda to
road, take the path on the right. The
trail leads uphill to a junction. Turn right
here and follow the sign for Markelos.
The path snakes its way along the left
flank of the imposing hillsides, twisting
and turning en route.
On the right, you will see an impressive
panorama of Leros Airport and the
Bay of Partheni coming into view. When
you reach the goat pens on your right,
follow the right fork in the road. Continue
along this road until you reach the
next division in the road. Do not take
the main road. Instead, you will see a
small, flat area to your right. Cross this
towards the airport and you will find
a narrow, winding path which leads
centuries since. Remains of the walls
found here are thought to be from
a watchtower dating from 4th-3rd
century B.C.
paved road to the right. This will lead
you high up along the ridge and
around Blefoutis Bay.
Enjoy the marvellously diverse scenery
and turquoise blue sea below. The
road follows the bay around to the
beach of Blefoutis. If you are interested
in visiting the only vineyard on Leros,
On your return, follow the road back
along the waterside and up the hill
until you reach the barracks again. Turn
church of Agia Kioura were created
by three political prisoners interred on
Start at the far end of the village of
Kamara. On the right-hand side of the
main road, before the ridge, you will
see a multimedia shop.
Opposite an unpaved road leads off
at right angles uphill. Follow this road
to the “Chapel of Panagia Eleousia” at
the junction. Here you can choose to
hike up to Memigaria via the path on
the left and enjoy the wonderful view
over the island.
Alternatively, you can take the path on
the right which will lead you along the
foot of the mountain range to the chapel
of “Agios Nikolaos” in the valley.
This beach is ideal for a short break.
An unpaved road then leads you
along behind the beach, following the
wide arc of the coastline.
The turquoise-blue sea and beautiful
Bay of Gourna on the right and the
mountain on your left lend this route a
special charm of it´s own. After many
twists and turns, you will reach a secluded
bay with the “Chapel of Agios
Isodhoros” at the far end.
A 50 m. causeway leads across the
clear, shallow water to this little gem
of a chapel perched on the rocks. In
rough seas, however, it is not accessible.
After your visit, keep to your right as you
walk back, until you reach the small
settlement of Kokkali. A secondary
road meanders through the agricultural
fields and vegetable gardens
back to the main road from Alinda to
Partheni.
CULTURAL TIP:
The Chapel
Agios
Isodhoros
This chapel was built in 1892 on a rocky
promontory just above sea level.
In addition to the church, the remains
of an ancient temple have also been
uncovered at this site. The chapel´s
unique location is reminiscent of Vlacherna
Monastery on Corfu.
with a white bag. With the sea on
your right, keep to the left and head
slightly uphill and cross country to a
massive rock overhang. Once you have
reached the crest, cross a rocky slope
where you will already be able to see
Kryphos Bay below you.
The descent follows narrow, almost
unnoticeable goat trails down to the
beach. On the left, you will discover a
small cove worth exploring.
Enjoy a refreshing dip in the crystal waters
or a picnic on the pebble beach.
Should you still have the energy, in
the spring & summer the dry riverbed
provides a route back. The terrain
varies between steep inclines and level
ground, following the route channelled
out by centuries of water on rock.
When you reach a country lane, keep
to your left and walk towards, and then
over, the crest of the ridge upwards to
the chapel of “Agia Nikitas”.
and the bakery. Follow the 20m narrow
walk to the castle is signposted. Follow
winding its way up the mountain in graduated
of Agia Marina with its hustle and bustle
of ferries arriving and departing and
the castle, keep to the right where a
Dating from the Byzantine age, perched
at 154 m. above sea level, this
fortress has had a turbulent history. The
Maltese Knights of St. John extended
the original fortification, the Italians
and Germans entrenched themselves
within its sturdy structure and the Germans
finally bombed it during the last
stages of WWII. Yet it remains. A walk
along the imposing walls is well worthwhile.
The views across Agia Marina,
on one side, the fishing hamlet of Panteli
and the breathtaking Bay of Alinda
on the other, and those clear across
the strait to the mountains of Kalymnos
are truly spectacular. Surely just compensation
for the climb! On clear days,
even the monastery of Patmos can be
glimpsed.
On your descent via the mountain
road, take time to duck into the tiny
chapel of “Agios Nikolaos” perched
Duration: 4.5 hours
Category: Medium
Start at the Marina on the waterfront in
Lakki.
Beside the café Escape is a small road
that leads inland to a crossroads. At
the crossroads, turn left and follow the
road to a pine forest. Take the unpaved
forest road on the left.
Follow the winding trail along an old
retaining wall through the pine forest to
the “Chapel of the Prophet Zacharia”
and the Tunnel War Museum which is
well worth a visit.
After your visit, head back towards the
Bay of Merikia. Turn right and follow the
coastal road as it winds uphill.
You will reach a chapel on a rocky
summit. The path now leads you downhill
again along the impressive coastline
and provides you with magnificent
views of the sheer cliffs and offshore
islands, clear over to the monastery of
Patmos.
When, on your right, you can see two
adjacent chapels, look carefully for
the path which leads to the left. Here,
you can make a detour to the Chapel
and monastery of “ Agios Petros.”
From here, the route continues towards
Gourna. After approx. 800m. the road
forks.
The right fork leads back to Lakki, the
left to the village of Drimonas and the
main road from Gourna to Lakki. If you
turn left at the main road, it will lead
you down to the long, sandy beach at
Gourna. From here there is a nice view
over the islets offshore.
Enjoy a rest after your long walk and
Lakki Marina provides the starting point
for this walk. Past a restaurant and a
sailing school, the road winds along
the coast up to the Bay of Merikia. At
the end of the bay, the road leads
uphill, curving along the indented
coastline. In a small gulley below the
road, you will see the small chapel of
“Agios Spiribonas”. Continue until you
see Katsouni signposted and follow
the road to a small pine copse on a
narrow spit of land. A path leads to a
good vantage point at some abandoned
military buildings and cannons.
From here, you can see the whole of
Lighthouse
Old observation point
Mountaineer
Lakki Bay all the way over to the Marina.
Just a short distance more brings
you to the lighthouse with a magnificent
vista of the dramatic entrance
to Lakki Bay and the mountain massifs
of nearby Kalymnos. Should a family
of dolphins be passing the strait, you´ll
have the perfect photo opportunity.
Go back behind the abandoned buildings
for a unique panorama of the
cliffs. A nice spot for a picnic! Follow
the path back to the road and walk
towards Merikia. Before reaching it,you
will see a signpost to Kokkina Porzellana
on your right. Follow this road down to
a remote and lovely bay. If you swim
in the crystal waters, swim out past the
small spit of land on the left where you
will find a cave that you can swim into.
Afterwards, enjoy a refreshment at one
of the many cafes and tavernas along
the waterfront in Lakki while you watch
the yachts at anchor.
Kokkina Porzelana
With its wealth of wrecks from ancient
times to WWII, Leros is becoming a noted
area for wreck diving in the Greek
islands. The Bay of Lakki is the final
resting place of the Greek battleship
“The Olga” and the British destroyer
“Intrepid”.
CULTURAL TIP:
The Tunnel-
Museum
The traveller interested in history
mustn´t miss the War Museum located
in an old 100m long munitions
tunnel. The war years on Leros are
illustrated instructively and movingly
through many original objects.
Duration: 4 hours
Category: Medium
Start at the bus stop at Xirokampos
The road leads along the water to the
lovely little chapel of “Agia Kavouradenas”.
With the bay of Xerocampos on
your right, follow the mountain road up
until you reach a rest stop.
Take a break and enjoy the sweeping
views of the mountain ranges of
Kalymnos and the Turkish coast in the
near distance. On the left-hand side a
curving, unpaved road leads up the
hill to another rest place.
Follow the road to a small crest which
provides another wonderful view of the
Bay of Xirocampos and Mt. Katavati.
Just past a rocky outcrop, you will see
a highlight of this walk- an old building
constructed by the Italians. The interior,
decorated by a German soldier
with skillful caricatures and paintings,
is worth a visit. You can now either
retrace your steps and descend by the
same path or take the more adventurous
route back through the mountains.
If you choose to do this, take the goat
path behind the building. Keep the
Kastro and red roof of the chapel on
your left as landmarks if you choose to
go cross country through the mountains.
When you pass the goat pens
on your right, you have reached the
paved road which leads back down to
the Kastro.
After this, turn left when you reach the
main road and this will take you back
to your starting point.
The tavernas on the beach and the
calm of Xirocampos will provide a
tempting opportunity to relax.
From Xirokampos, an early morning
caique sails daily to Myrties on Kalymnos
and returns in the afternoon.
Check departures with the locals as
times may vary with the season.
CULTURAL TIP:
The Chapel of
Pagania sto
Paleokastro
On the 80 m. high hills, lie the most
important ancient remains of the
island.
To the east of the 11th century chapel,
surrounded by the beautiful Quadern
walls is a Hellenic watchtower.
