Además de toda esa actividad, el actor cubano es la imagen de
varias campañas publicitarias en las que con frecuencia se enfatiza
su aspecto de sex symbol. Sin embargo, en la vida real, hace ya
varios años que Levy cambió el título de “papacito” que sus fans le
han dado por el de papá. ¡Y qué papá!
Cuando conversé con él recientemente en Miami, me di
cuenta de que al protagonista de telenovelas como Sortilegio y
Triunfo del amor no le cuesta para nada hablar de su papel favorito,
el de ser padre. Pero antes de llegar a esa parte de su vida contó
cómo le ha ido en Hollywood.
¿Cómo describes el momento actual de tu carrera?
Ahora me encuentro haciendo cine y tratando de cambiar la
idea que tiene Hollywood de nosotros los latinos. Siempre piensan
que los latinos somos bajitos y que todos tenemos la piel oscura, y
yo quiero que sepan que no todos somos de la misma forma, que
somos diferentes.
Entre mis próximos proyectos en Hollywood está la película
Río Sangre. Es como un western pero con vampiros, con horror. Una
vez, mientras viajaba a Los Ángeles, leí el guión y enseguida le
dije a mi mánager: “¡Quiero hacer esta película!”. Es uno de esos
personajes que todo actor sueña tener, porque es fuerte y a la vez
muy humano; además, la trama tiene un rumbo inesperado.
También se estrenará otra película tuya en inglés, Single Moms
Club. ¿Qué te convenció de participar en ella?
Me gustó la seguridad que tiene en sí mismo mi personaje
[Manny], quien a pesar de estar atravesando un momento difícil
de su vida acepta la responsabilidad de salir con Esperanza, una
mamá soltera. No hay muchos hombres hoy en día que acepten la
responsabilidad de seguir la vida con un hijo que no sea suyo. Me
pareció que era un ejemplo muy lindo y que era algo a lo que se le
podía dar atención, sobre todo si tomamos en cuenta que muchas
mujeres pasan por eso.

This year we’ll get the chance to see William Levy acting in English,
in Spanish and just about everywhere! His new soap opera with
Televisa—“La Tempestad”—is already underway and he will soon
begin films in English. In addition to all this activity, the Cuban
actor is also part of several ad campaigns in which his enduring
status as a sex symbol is front and center. But in his everyday life,
Levy traded his role as a heartthrob for that of “hot dad” quite
some time ago.
The star of soaps including “Sortilegio” and “Triunfo del Amor”
is not shy about his favorite role as a dad. But before we got to
discuss that part of his life during our meeting in Miami, Levy filled
us in on how he’s breaking barriers in Hollywood.
How would you describe this moment in your career?
I find myself acting in films and trying to change the
established Hollywood image of us Latinos. They have this idea
that we are all short and of a dark complexion, and I want them to
know that we do not all fit that mold. We are all different.
Among my upcoming Hollywood projects is the film Río Sangre.
It’s kind of a Western, but with vampires and horror. I was flying
to Los Angeles, when I first read the script, and I immediately
told my manager, “I want to do this film.” It’s one of those roles
all actors dream about playing, because he [the lead character] is
extremely strong and yet very much human. Plus, the plot twists in
unexpected ways.
Another one of your films in English, Single Moms Club, is due to
be released soon. What made you want to be a part of that?
I enjoyed the self-assuredness expressed by my character
[Manny], who in spite of going through a difficult time in his own
life, accepts the responsibility it takes to date Esperanza, a single
mom. There aren’t many men nowadays who would accept the
responsibility of taking on a life with a child that’s not his own. I
felt it was quite a beautiful example and that it was something I

Precisamente, tú vienes de un hogar monoparental. ¿Cuándo
comenzaste a apreciar lo que implicaba para tu mamá enfrentar
la vida sin una pareja?
Yo siempre he sido muy observador y analítico, así es que
desde los once años comencé a ver que en mi casa mi mamá
y mi abuelita hacían muchos sacrificios para darnos un pan
al día, y que si me daban dos eso significaba que ellas se
quedaban sin comer.
Después de una vida de sacrificios, ¿cómo has logrado
recompensar a tu mamá por esa época tan difícil?
No me gusta hablar de cosas materiales, pero me da mucha
alegría recordar cuando pude comprarle un auto. Cuando llegamos
aquí [Miami] lo que más nos daba problema era el carro, nos
dejaba botados en todos lados. El ruido que hacía era tan fuerte
que se podía escuchar a diez cuadras. Cuando mi mamá me iba a
buscar a la escuela no podía parar el carro porque se le apagaba y
costaba mucho encenderlo de nuevo, así es que yo me tenía que
bajar y subir mientras el auto todavía seguía caminando. Por eso,
cuando trabajé y pude comprarle un auto a mi mamá, para mí fue
una gran alegría. Gracias a Dios, desde entonces no me ha faltado

could shed some light on, especially considering that many women
have to live through that.
In fact, you come from a single-parent household. When did
you begin to appreciate what it took for your mom to face life
without a partner?
I’ve always been very observant and analytical, so since I
was about 11 years old I began to notice that my mom and my
grandmother sacrificed a lot to give us our daily bread, and that if
we were given two, then that meant they went without.
After a life full of sacrifice, how have you managed to pay your
mom back for that difficult period?
I don’t like to talk about material things, but it makes me very
happy to recall when I was able to buy her a car. When we first
arrived here [Miami], the car was what gave us the most trouble;
it would leave us stranded everywhere. It was so loud, that you
could hear it 10 blocks away. When my mother picked me up at
school, she couldn’t stop the car because it would shut off and it
was nearly impossible to restart, so I would have to get on and off
as the car was moving. That’s why when I started working and was
able to afford it, it was really an achievement for me. Thankfully,
since then I haven’t been without work and I haven’t lacked for
anything. But above all, I really enjoy being with her, because I
know what’s most important is not what I can give her, but rather
the time we spend together.
How did living without a father change the way you saw things?
I learned very early on what you want from a father and what
you need from him. I try to give that to my own children and to
be the best father possible. I try my hardest to provide them with
what they need most.

el trabajo y no descuido nada de lo que necesite. Pero sobre todo
me gusta mucho estar con ella, porque sé que lo más importante
no es lo que le pueda regalar, sino pasar tiempo juntos.
¿Cómo cambió eso tu forma de enfrentar la vida sin padre?
Como aprendí muy pronto lo que uno quiere recibir de un
padre y lo que necesita de él, trato de darle eso a mis hijos y
de ser el mejor papá posible, me esfuerzo por darles lo que
más necesitan.
¿Y qué es, en tu opinión, lo que los hijos más necesitan?
Los hijos necesitan todo. Yo no creo que los niños pidan algo
por gusto, creo que cuando lo piden es porque lo necesitan. Me
refiero a las cosas no materiales, por supuesto. Si de tiempo se
trata, los niños no conocen la abundancia, lo que más quieren es
todo el tiempo para estar con uno. Creo que cuando los hijos nos
piden que juguemos con ellos es porque necesitan hacerlo; que
cuando nos piden que durmamos con ellos, también es porque
lo necesitan. Mis hijos duermen con nosotros, porque Elizabeth
[la actriz Elizabeth Gutiérrez) y yo pensamos que tenemos que
aprovecharlos lo máximo antes de que crezcan.
Tu compañera es actriz, de hecho se conocieron en el reality
de Telemundo Protagonistas de Novelas 2. ¿Crees que sus hijos
seguirán los pasos de ustedes?
Kailey, la niña, tiene tres años y ¡no para de bailar! Una vez
llegué a casa de trabajar en Nueva York a las dos de la mañana y
como a las siete de la mañana me despertó diciéndome: “¡Papá,
baila, baila!”. Y yo trataba de explicarle: “Mi amor, son las siete
de la mañana, acabo de venir de Nueva York”. Pero ella no paró
hasta que bailé. Con una personita tan hermosa, ¿cómo puede
uno darse el lujo de estar cansado? Como le gusta tanto hacer
show, creo que mi hija va a ser artista, pero a mi hijo Christopher
(7) lo veo muy concentrado en el deporte. Le encanta el béisbol
y eso también me emociona mucho, porque antes de dedicarme
a la actuación yo jugué béisbol toda mi vida. Es un sueño que no
cumplí y que a través de él estoy reviviendo.
¿Cómo conquistas a su mamá?
¡Uy! ¿Ya comenzamos con preguntas íntimas? (risas). Me
gusta sorprenderla con las cosas que a ella le gustan, no sólo
citas románticas. A ella le gusta mucho el deporte, como el
basquetbol, y también el deporte nos une.

And in your opinion, what is it that they need most?
Your children need everything. I don’t think children ask,
just for the sake of asking. I think when they ask for something,
it’s because they need it. I’m referring to non-material things, of
course. If it’s about your time, children don’t recognize an over
abundance. What they most want is to be with you all the time.
I think that when our kids ask us to play with them, it’s because
they need it; when they ask us to sleep with them, it’s also because
they need that. Our children sleep with us, because Elizabeth [actor
Elizabeth Gutiérrez] and I believe that we have to take advantage of
the time we have with them before they grow up.
Your partner is also an actor that you met in the Telemundo
reality show “Protagonistas de Novelas 2.” Do you think your
children will follow in your footsteps?
Kailey, my daughter, is three years old, and she won’t stop
dancing! One time, I came home from New York at 2 a.m. and at
about seven she woke me up saying, “Papá, baila, baila!” (Daddy,

Con tantos comerciales o sesiones de fotos enfatizando tu bien
delineada anatomía, ¿no te preocupa que te encasillen en el
estereotipo de sex symbol?
Una de las cosas que a mí siempre me ha importado es
transmitirle a la gente un sentimiento real, y eso es lo que trato de
hacer cuando hago mi trabajo. Hasta ahora, por los comentarios
de mis fans, siento que lo estoy logrando. Siempre habrá criticas
y no sólo como actor. La gente critica a los abogados, a los
médicos… Por eso lo que quiero hacer es enfocarme en mi trabajo.
Siempre he elegido personajes diferentes de todos los demás,
porque no quiero que mis fans se aburran. Y agradezco a Dios por
sentirme con la capacidad de hacerlo.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry decía que lo esencial no resulta visible
a los ojos. Cuando vemos esas fotos tan sensuales tuyas en las
revistas o en las campañas publicitarias, ¿qué se nos escapa de
tu esencia?
Que soy un hombre muy de su familia. Que cuando me
toca viajar por mi trabajo, por mucho que disfruto lo que estoy
haciendo y por muy bien que me lleve con mis compañeros, nada
se compara con la alegría de regresar a mi hogar. ¡Eso es lo que
más disfruto en la vida!

arrived from New York.” But she would not stop until I danced.
With such a beautiful little person before you, how can you afford
the luxury of being tired? She loves to be the center of attention so
much. I think my daughter will be an artist, but my son Christopher
(7) is much more focused on sports. He loves baseball and that gets
me really excited too, because before I devoted myself to acting, I
played baseball my whole life. It’s a dream I never realized and that
I’m reliving through him.
How do you captivate their mother?
Uy! Did we already get to the personal questions? [Laughs]. I
love to surprise her with things I know she likes, not just romantic
dates. She loves sports like basketball very much, and so sports
also keep us together.
With so many commercials and images focusing on your
well-chiseled physique, aren’t you afraid to be pigeonholed
as a sex symbol?
One of the things that’s always mattered to me has been to
express my feelings honestly, and I try to do that in my work.
Until now, based on my fans’ comments, I feel I’ve achieved that.
There will always be criticism, and not just because of my work as
an actor. People criticize lawyers, doctors… That’s why I want to
focus on my work. I’ve always chosen to play different characters,
because I don’t want my fans to get bored. And I thank God that I
have the opportunity to do just that.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said the essence of something isn’t
always what’s visible. When we see those sexy pictures of you in
magazines and ad campaigns, what are we missing about your
true essence?
That I am very much a family man. That when I have to
travel for work, no matter how much I enjoy what I’m doing
and how much I enjoy the company of my peers, nothing
compares to the joy I get from coming back home. That’s what
I most enjoy in life!
