Why use RICS
in your marketing?
The chartered surveyor designation – the letters after your name,
the RICS logo and the words ‘Regulated by RICS’ for regulated
firms, will help people recognise you as a qualified property
professional or business committed to following RICS values and
working to the highest standards of competence.
Our campaigns and growing media profile are all designed to promote
trust and confidence in your activities.
The more you use the RICS mark, the greater your business’
competitive edge and earning power.
These guidelines are for:
• individual members of RICS;
• firms (professional practices) offering independent surveying
services to the public; and
• other businesses involved in surveying activity whether in a
commercial or institutional context – for example, local authorities
and property developers.
The guidelines have been updated in 2007 to reflect the requirements
of RICS’ regulatory system. These regulations apply to some
professional practices from 4 June 2007, and can be grouped into
two categories:
• Professional practices with 50% or more RICS partners or
directors which must be regulated by RICS
• Professional practices with a minority of RICS partners or directors
and which are not automatically covered by RICS regulations but
may choose to be regulated by RICS.
RICS cannot currently regulate professional practices outside the UK
or other businesses not providing independent surveying services to
the public.
www.rics.org/brand
Why use RICS in your marketing? 1
Who can use RICS
professional designations?
If your practice provides surveying services, it may use ‘chartered
surveyors’ with, but not as part of, its name if:
• you are a sole principal, or at least 50% of the practice’s partners
or directors are fellows or professional members; and
• no partners or directors have previously been expelled from RICS
and been refused reinstatement;
• the practice is regulated by RICS. For more information on
‘Regulated by RICS’, see page 13.
Note
1 Whenever the names of partners or directors are listed, their RICS
designatory letters (see page 4) must be included.
2 Practices may also use alternative chartered designations – such as
Chartered Environmental Surveyor – if any principal, partner or director has
the right to use it.
3 You must not link other words to the designation ‘Chartered Surveyors’ in
any way that suggests that a particular activity has the chartered status
when it does not (see the second of the ‘wrong’ examples listed on the
following page).
Use your letters after your name
Whichever area you work in, your RICS qualification gives your clients
or employers confidence in your skill and professionalism, and shows
your commitment to RICS values. Make the most of that qualification
by using your letters after your name at every opportunity!
FRICS
MRICS
TechRICS
4
Who can use the RICS logo
Personal use of the logo
As a qualified RICS member, you have the right to use the logo on personal
stationery (business cards) whether you are a partner, director or employee.
You can also get advice from RICS on how to use the logo.
This applies to all qualified members – Fellows (FRICS), Professional Members
(MRICS) and Technical Members (Tech RICS) – no matter what type of
organisation you work in or the activities you carry out (see note 4 below).
When organisations can and cannot use the logo
• A practice providing independent surveying services to the public in the UK
(see note 5 below) can use the logo on its stationery (corporate letterheads,
websites, marketing materials) if it is regulated by RICS.
• A practice providing independent surveying services to the public in the UK
cannot use the logo on its stationery if it is not regulated by RICS.
• All other organisations (including practices outside the UK) involved in
surveying activity – whether in a commercial or institutional context, but
not an educational establishment – can use the logo on their stationery.
These organisations cannot be regulated by RICS. However, these
organisations must:
• – have one or more chartered or technical surveyor directors or partners
involved in surveying activity; or
• – be a department within an organisation (unless it is an educational
establishment) where a fully qualified RICS member is the director or
manager.
Note
4 Qualified members are allowed to use the RICS logo for marketing their surveying
services. However, the RICS logo is restricted in relation to other products and
services which may suggest that it is endorsed by RICS.
5 ‘Providing a surveying service to the public’ means acting to provide a service(s)
considered by RICS to be within those which are responsibilities of RICS’ Faculties to
professional, corporate, institutional and all other clients. If you are the technical
department of a local authority you may be providing a surveying service but the
service you provide and your duty is firstly to your employer, even if you do provide
services to the public.
www.rics.org/brand
Using the RICS logo
5
Where to use the logo
• Stationery and brochures are often a client’s first point of contact with your
organisation – using the RICS logo will confirm your professional status.
• In publicity material, local advertising and directories, the RICS logo sets
your organisation apart and really helps your advertisements stand out.
• Sale and site boards are a highly visible presentation of your firm’s name
and the RICS mark. You can get details of suppliers of site boards by
calling the RICS Contact Centre on +44 (0)870 333 1600.
• Using the RICS logo on office signs and company cars reinforces
customer confidence in your professional and ethical standards. RICS
window stickers are available from the RICS Contact Centre, call
+44 (0)870 333 1600.
• Your website can benefit from using the RICS logo too. Visit
www.rics.org/brand to find out how you can put in a link to RICS from your
own homepage using the RICS logo. We can also give you the option to
link through to a specific article appearing on the RICS website. However,
when doing so, please acknowledge ‘RICS’ on all links. If your organisation
cannot use the RICS logo under the criteria set out on the previous page
but you would like to insert a link to information on the RICS website, you
can do so using a text link. For example, ‘For more information on using a
chartered surveyor when buying your home, visit www.rics.org/usefulguides’.
Or, if you have a ‘Useful links’ section and would like to display a link to the
RICS website, you may find the follow text appropriate:
‘The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) – the largest
organisation for professionals in property, land, construction and related
environmental issues worldwide.’
• You can put the logo anywhere else you think it will give you great publicity.
Using the RICS logo
7
Logo sizes
It’s vital to use the RICS logo, with or without the strapline (‘The mark of property
professionalism worldwide’) in a clear way. Going below the minimum sizes shown
will cause the letters to ‘fill in’. And you’ll lose its value if it’s too small to be read
(for example, in newspapers and directory advertisements).
It’s crucial that you do not:
• split the lion’s head from the letters – together they form the logo;
• use the RICS logo within or as part of your company’s logo;
• twist or distort the logo’s proportions;
• crop the logo;
• use the logo in ways that would have a negative effect on RICS or its
members; or
• change the position of the strapline in relation to the lion’s head and letters
as it’s fixed.
Using the logo on backgrounds
Print the RICS logo in reversed white-out on grey, purple, blue, black, dark
backgrounds or background images. You must make sure it is clear at
all times.
Do not print the logo on:
• a background of the same tone or colour;
• visually complicated images;
• textured backgrounds; or
• an image with the same tone or colour.
8
How to download the RICS logo
The recommended logo styles are available on the RICS branding website
pages at www.rics.org/brand
• As an RICS member, you can download the logo direct from
www.rics.org/brand by logging into the secure member area.
• EPS files are for off-line print use.
• GIF files are for on-line use and for printing your own stationery in-house
(fax templates, letterheads and so on).
You can download a full list of logo styles (in RICS primary colours, plus black
and white) from the ‘logo’ pages on the website.
Using the logo in colour
You may use the RICS logo in the following colours:
• Pantone 432 grey – the recommended PMS (Pantone matching system)
as shown in the colour palette;
• PMS 269 purple, PMS 540 blue, black or reversed white; or
• use your main company colour if you do not use any of the specified
colours mentioned.
Using the RICS logo 11
Using the RICS strapline
You can also use our strapline (‘The mark of property professionalism
worldwide’) with the logo as it reinforces the value of the overall message.
It’s not meant to replace the main logo, but does offer a marketing alternative.
The mark of
property professionalism worldwide
Why we use RICS instead
of our full name
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors is a description which is not
easily understood in some markets and ‘chartered surveyors’ does not translate
well into languages other than English. Technical surveyors are also members
of RICS.
In the light of our activities (especially worldwide), we prefer the authority,
status and respectability of the RICS brand, which we promote in all our
communication materials to members, the public, business, government, the
media and related professionals. This makes sure that we are collectively
promoting one brand.
12
Who can use the
‘Regulated by RICS’ designation?
Currently, only UK practices which provide independent surveying services to the public
can be regulated by RICS. As a result, these guidelines only apply to these practices.
Individual members
The ‘Regulated by RICS’ designation must not be used by individual members on any
personal stationery such as business cards or personal letters.
Professional practices
Professional practices in the UK must use ‘Regulated by RICS’ on their letterhead
if they are registered for regulation. Currently, professional practices with offices
worldwide can only use ‘Regulated by RICS’ on the letterheads of their UK-based
offices.
Professional practices that are not registered for regulation (because they have fewer
than 50% of RICS partners or directors and have decided not to be regulated) cannot
use the ‘Regulated by RICS’ designation on any business stationery.
www.rics.org/brand
Using ‘Regulated by RICS’ 13
How to use the
‘Regulated by RICS’ designation
The new regulatory designation is not part of the RICS brand and you should not
position it close to, or as part of, the RICS logo.
The size and position of ‘Regulated by RICS’
We recommend that you use the new ‘Regulated by RICS’ on your letterheads
between 10 and 12 point type along the bottom left-hand side (see opposite page).
We would prefer you to reproduce the wording ‘Regulated by RICS’ in black, or in one
of the existing three RICS primary colours. These are grey (PMS 432), purple (PMS
269) and blue (PMS 540).
We realise that, for some firms, positioning the designation this precisely may not be
possible because of their own brand guidelines and image. In these cases, we would
ask you to use sensible judgement and place it in a discreet position, but not close to
the RICS logo.
As well as using it on your letterhead, you may want to use the new designation on
other marketing and communication materials. The sentence helps provide a great
deal of reassurance for the public and possible clients. See on the page opposite how
the designation can be used on a number of communication items.
Using ‘Regulated by RICS’
15
How not to use ‘Regulated by RICS’
Below are a few examples of how you shouldn’t use the new designation
‘Regulated by RICS’. This isn’t a full list, but hopefully shows the principles we are
trying to put into practice.
It’s crucial that you do not:
• make the designation too big like a headline;
• position it close to, or under, the RICS logo;
• place the wording ‘Regulated by RICS’ inside a panel or box;
• reverse the wording out of a solid or tinted background; or
• run it down the edge of a page.
The new designation is designed to be subtle, while showing the public that they
can trust your firm to work to the highest ethical and professional standards.
This positioning is deliberate so that the public see the designation as a regulatory
requirement rather than a blatant marketing tool.
