Dear Seafarers and Readers!
As we are approaching the 10th Maritime Cyprus it's time to welcome you on this wonderful island,
a thousand participants from all over the world are expected and it once again shows that Cyprus is
still a Maritime Centre - even after becoming a member of the EU in 2004.
Today we have the 23rd of September - the autumn season begins, where day and night are for a
short time of the same duration and an extremely nice and pleasant Sunday here in Hamburg, where
the sun shines mildly - a very rare phenomenon this summer where we were introduced with
extraordinarily wet months. As a result, the summer clothes were hardly used and everyone had
rather white complexion unless you happen to be on holidays in southern Europe, where the
opposite was happening; hot, hot, hot and fires blazing by coincidence or on purpose!
I do not want to discuss the weather because there are so many "experts" doing it. But the summer
of 2007 was awful. Not so the charter rates: Bulkers, bullish like never before, tankers, decreased and
containers fine.
This is the sunny side of the trade - the other one is much harder. We should have more seafarers
like you, highly educated, highly motivated, healthy and loyal.
One week later…
We celebrate Thanksgiving Day (Harvest Festival) where the churches in Germany are adorned with
cornucopias, pumpkins, corn, wheat sheaves, different fruits and vegetables, sunflowers and other
harvest bounty. Since pagan times in ancient traditions Harvest festivals were held on or near the
Sunday of the Harvest Moon (the full moon which falls in the month of September). Our
Thanksgiving is different than the one celebrated in the US, since theirs is always celebrated on the
fourth Thursday in November.
We think and we thank for all the good food we were blessed with during the last months. We
remember that we do not have to die from starvation like unfortunately so many human beings in
this world and that we should always be most careful with our food stocks and appreciate it every
day. Bread, fruit and vegetables are gifts from God! European harvest hymns are customarily sung
on this special day along with scriptural story lectures derived from biblical ones. I especially like the
idea of decorating the dining table with coloured autumn leaves and having the whole family for a
special Thanksgiving meal where normally turkey is served. But nowadays I have seen many people
infusing this classic meal with elements of their traditional ethnic foods which I really respect.
Irrespective of when or where you will be celebrating your Thanksgiving Day, I do hope is going to
be one you will enjoy and remember.
Happy Sailing! Christiane E. Oldendorff
4
During the 1980's Mr. and Mrs.
Oldendorff had been considering relocating
to a country with a more
favourable tax climate than Germany. In
1986 they finally settled on Cyprus and in the latter
half of that year made plans for moving not only the
shipowning part of the Oldendorff business, but also
for moving the family to Cyprus. At that time
Limassol was already home to a number of Ship
Management companies such as Hanseatic (the
first to arrive in 1972), Columbia and Uniteam.
Mr. Oldendorff was the first, and as far as I know the
only German shipowner to not only re-locate his
business to Cyprus, but also physically make Cyprus
the domicile for himself and his family.
In 1986 I was working in Gibraltar and
living on the Costa del Sol in Spain. Later in the year,
I think in October or November, I received a
telephone call from Mr. Oldendorff telling me that
he was moving to Cyprus and asking me if I would
be interested in joining him to set the office up and
then act as General Manager of the operation. We
met in London and agreed terms and then arranged
to meet in Cyprus in December.
On one of his previous visits Mr. Oldendorff
had met and employed a Captain Bob Stuart, who
was, strictly speaking, the first employee of Reederei
"NORD" Limassol. Bob had arranged for me to meet
accountants and bankers and also picked a selection of
offices for Mr. Oldendorff and me to inspect on our
December visit. The lawyers were a
forgone conclusion as Chrysses Demetriades was
"Mr. Shipping" of Limassol, as all of the German
companies there were introduced to the island
through him. We finally selected Demetris Ioannides
of the accountants which are now known as Deloitte
and Touche and decided to use The Cyprus Popular
Bank for our local needs. When celebrating our 20th
anniversary lunch in a Limassol restaurant in May, of
this year I was greeted by a lady who many people in
the office will know, it was Marina Theodorides, who
was the first person I met at Cyprus Popular Bank in
December 1986. She retired from the bank only
about a year ago.
One anecdote from that time concerns
Mr. Oldendorff. The most famous of Cyprus beers is a
brand marketed under the name of KEO, the brewery
in Limassol. Mr. Oldendorff and I were staying at the
L'onda Beach Hotel and were sitting at the bar one
NORD NEWS Autumn 2007
REEDEREI “NORD” KLAUS
evening when the barman noticed the KEO motif
on Mr. Oldendorff's shirt. "Oh" said
the barman "I see you work for KEO"
Mr. Oldendorff looked the barman square in the eye
and said "I don't work for KEO, I am KEO".
After looking at a number of offices we
decided to take part of the seventh floor of the
Nicolaou Centre at Pentadromos (Greek for Five
Ways). I think we had about 80 square meters divided
into an office for Mr. Oldendorff, a small reception
for the secretary, an office for Bob Stuart and myself
and room for an accountant.
The office officially opened on 1st January
1987. I think I arrived in Cyprus within the first two
weeks of that month. We then employed a secretary
who some in the Limassol office may remember. It
was Debbie Arnott who worked with us as a secretary
for a year before getting a position in the personnel
department of a small management company. As
many will know Debbie returned to us and worked
in our Personnel Department for many years before
leaving quite recently.
During our time at Pentadromos the most
memorable event was the earthquake. Our Cypriot
colleagues will remember that in the last twenty years or
so we have had many earthquakes, but only two that
exceeded 6 on the Richter Scale. One was in October
or November of 1987. We were all on the seventh floor
of Nicolaou Centre, quite a scary place to be
when a fairly substantial earthquake hits. I was in
Mr. Oldendorff's office standing at his desk and talking
with him when he started to move across the room on
his chair. Once the initial shock was over we all got out
of the office rather quickly and waited outside down in
the street for a while. As it was late afternoon anyway
we decided that as there was a possibility of aftershocks
it was best not to return to the office until the next
morning.
When Reederei “NORD” first set up in
Cyprus we only did crewing, but Mr. Oldendorff
wanted to bring the full management of some of his
vessels to Cyprus which meant we needed to start a
Technical Department. This in turn meant that we did
not have enough space in Pentadromos so we started
looking for new offices in the late Summer of 1987.
By the Autumn of 1987 we had signed a lease
for the fifth floor of Libra Tower. At that stage the

E. OLDENDORFF LIMITED Mr. Norman Elliott
building had not been completed and we were
scheduled to move and take up occupation in
February 1988.
The first problem when considering
moving an office was transferring telephones and
telex, (yes telex) as email was not in use 20 years
ago. Cyprus telephones were all handled by the
government-controlled Cyprus Telecommunications
Authority (CYTA) and in those days it could take 2
months to get a telephone line. The second
problem was finding someone to physically move
furniture. There were no proper removal companies
in Limassol and I was told of a man to contact who,
we discovered afterwards, just went down to the
docks and picked the beefiest dock workers, got
hold of an open top truck and moved your office
effects. Sounds great in theory, the practice was not
so good. We were moving from the seventh floor of
one building to the fifth floor of another. None of
the dockworkers had any idea how to move
furniture nor cared very much what damage they
did to it or the new offices we were moving into.
We did it, but at what cost I cannot even begin to
relate. That is one Saturday memorable only for the
trauma to Mr. and Mrs. Oldendorff and myself.
The first problem was solved by the
judicious use of brown paper envelopes which
meant that on Monday morning we were fully
operational with telephone, telefax and telex, a fact
that I am quite proud of, especially as Colombia
Ship Management, who had moved to their new
offices shortly before, were without telex for a week.
The fifth floor of Libra Tower is much the
same today as it was when we moved in.
Mr. Oldendorff's office was where Mrs. Oldendorff
has hers today; the conference room has always been
in the same place. Capt Obeyesekera's room was
empty and the Managing Director’s office was our
Technical Department. The reception was in the
same place, but smaller in that there was a partition
where Jim sits, dividing off a separate room which
was my office. The end room was personnel. Where
personnel are now was the accounts department.
Reederei "NORD" Hamburg had been
doing crewing and management business with a
company in London called Unishipping and we
employed Nigel Smith from Unishipping as our
Technical Superintendent and so by the end of
1988 we were taking on full management of both
the Oldendorff vessels and outside tonnage. By
1989 we had increased the staff to about 25.
Another memorable event from those early
days concerns the fire in Ahrenkiel’s office in the
Araouzos building next door. I was living in a flat in
Rigas Fereos which is five minutes' walk from the
office when on Easter Saturday of 1988 I looked
out of my window to see a plume of thick black
smoke from the direction of our office. Fearing the
worst I ran around to Olympion Street to find the
Omiros and Araouzos building aflame from the
first floor upwards. The local fire brigade were
having terrible problems as they had never before
attended a fire in a multi storey building. My fear
was that it would spread to our building and
I was concerned for the accounting records and
Mr. Oldendorff's Jaguar which was in the garage.
Not having the keys to his car there was not much
I could do about that, but I did get into the office
and collect all the backup tapes from the accounts
department. The next door building was gutted and
it took a number of months before it could be
reoccupied. Fortunately Libra Tower was unaffected.
By 1988 Cyprus had a very vibrant
"Offshore Industry". This contributed 10
percent of the Cyprus GNP. There were
significant advantages to both companies and
individuals by being "Offshore" in that the ship
owning companies paid no tax at all and foreign
(or as they were known alien) employees of those
companies only paid 50 percent of the tax rates
charged to local employees. What is more these
individuals only paid tax on what they took as
salary in Cyprus. There were also considerable
advantages when purchasing a car, which was tax
free. There were disadvantages in that you had to
have a work permit which had to be renewed
every year, and the individual had to present
themselves at the local police station to obtain
this. Another disadvantage was that although the
offshore companies represented 10 percent of the
Cyprus GNP they had no say or influence at all
in the formulation of the laws governing the
industry. I well remember mentioning this to
Mr. Oldendorff early in 1988, it may even have
been in 1987. His reply was that we had enough
work building and running the office and we
should not be bothered about dealing and
representing our industry with the government.
NORD NEWS Autumn 2007 5

6
It so happens that a significant event
changed Mr. Oldendorff's attitude quite
dramatically in that Cyprus decided to introduce
VAT which could have had a serious impact,
particularly on the Management Companies.
Behind the scenes Mr. Oldendorff had been
canvassing leading members of the shipping
fraternity in Cyprus on the possibility of forming a
shipping group and the subject of VAT was the
spur needed to bring this to fruition.
The formation meeting of what came to
be known as The Cyprus Shipping Council took
place in the L'onda Beach Hotel on January 26,
1989. The Cyprus Shipping Council story can be
saved for another time, but suffice to say, under the
firm hand of Mr. Oldendorff it not only became
very influential with the government in Cyprus,
where it represented the whole of the Off Shore
industry, but very quickly became a shipping
organization recognised worldwide with a
significant influence on global shipping.
I have been involved in Shipping for
nearly 60 years and the industry today has
changed so much as to be almost unrecognisable.
However the changes that have taken place since
the formation of Reederei "NORD" Limassol 20
years ago have also been significant. Whether the
incredible control over the shipping industry
today is a good or bad thing is a subject that could
be debated for ever. However there can be no
debate about the growth in the Oldendorff fleet
over that period of time and, of course, the
growth of Reederei "NORD" Limassol. Now
covering three floors of Libra Tower with over 40
employees and handling vessels as diverse as
VLCC's and Container vessels, the success of the
operation in Limassol cannot be disputed. This
success is largely due to the dedication and hard
work of both the shore and seagoing staff. How
much more Limassol will expand will to some
measure depend on the markets, which we all
know in shipping can be very volatile, but with
the staff we have and the skills both on and off
shore I firmly believe Reederei "NORD" will be
capable of facing up to any challenges thrown at
it. I, for one, am looking forward to receiving an
invitation to celebrate our Silver Anniversary in
five years time and who knows, maybe by then we
will have all of Libra Tower to ourselves.
“NORDSPRING” from JINHAE
I12 accepted the proposal to
be Godmother for
the newbuilding Hull
S-1209 as a rare honor and
acknowledgment of the hard work,
dedication and professionalism that
STX Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in
Jinhae, Korea has put in the
construction of this beautiful and
modern ship.
I was also very privileged to
meet the Owners' representatives,
the crew, the surveyors from
Germanischer Lloyd and the NORD
Site supervisors. We spent very
pleasant time during the Pre-Naming
Dinner and the Naming ceremony. Everybody
was so happy and I was glad that the christening
was so successful and quite majestic.
Naming a ship "NORDSPRING" has
also a very personal and symbolic meaning for
me, because the city of Jinhae is the Korean
Spring Capital.
Every year during the cherry blossoming
we celebrate the wonderful transition of the
Mr. and Mrs. Elliott on the ship’s deck
gardens all around STX Shipyard are flush with
beautiful colors and this is my favorite season of
the year.
Now after this memorable Naming Day on 12th
July, 2007 I have two springs that are very dear to
my heart. The spring with the cherry blossoms will
be again here next year, but my "NORDSPRING"
will keep on sailing around the world.
NORD NEWS Autumn 2007 7

8
I
have always believed that good things in life
happen for a purpose. But unlike all other
common fairy tales this one started with a
phone call.
My husband, very briefly and in his usual
style informed me that I have been "promoted" to
"godmother" for one of the first 3500 TEU new
container vessels to be delivered by STX Korea for
Reederei “NORD”. Then again very mysteriously
he asked me to choose between "spring" and
"summer". I immediately chose summer, because
that is my favorite time of the year and of course it
was already the middle of July and summer was in
full swing. But when I hung up the phone suddenly
it all clicked and reality stepped in. I was so thrilled
and excited that for some time I couldn't believe
that this is actually happening. But as my dream will
tell you, it really came true.
I realized that perhaps I was "promoted" to
Godmother after my extensive "apprenticeship"
while attending naming ceremonies for Reederei
“NORD”s new buildings in Mokpo and Ulsan for
the period 2000-2004. I was always impressed by
the strict protocol and attention to detail that
“NORD” as a Company and the Oldendorff’s as a
family in particular, required for each event and for
a moment I wondered whether I am up to the task.
Although I was well aware of the
importance and responsibility of naming a new
ship, still I had to leaf through my “NORD” photo
albums to revive all these precious moments again.
And so, slowly but surely my "godmother to be"
confidence was restored. I have one old brass life
MY “NORDSU
boat compass that I keep as a talisman with me, so
I took it out of the box and put it in my purse for
good luck, just in case!
I had already sailed before with most of the
commanding officers and some of the crew of
“NORDSPRING” and “NORDSUMMER”,
during my trips on board the “NORD” ships with
my husband way back in the 90s , so I was very
glad to see them now as matured, confident and
experienced seamen, faithful to the traditions of the
Company. The “NORD” site team members in
STX were the first to congratulate and support me
in my new role, and I appreciated their help while
the preparations for the occasion took place in the
yard.
Then it was time to attend the ceremonies.
The night before the actual naming we welcomed
the “NORD” Owners and Managers for the prenaming
cocktail and dinner, which took place in the
picturesque APEC "NURI MARU" Villa in Busan.
The arrangements and scenery were fantastic and
befitting the occasion. The cordial speeches and
greetings delivered by “NORD”s Owners and STX
Senior Management added an extra spark to the
overall festivity and glamour of the official dinner.
The officers of “NORDSPRING” and
“NORDSUMMER” were looking like
"knights in shining armor" in their immaculate
uniforms and the evening turned out to be extremely
pleasant and enjoyable. We really had a great time!
The next morning , July 12th the weather
was fair as if Mother Nature stopped the rain
especially for “NORD”s joint two-ship naming
Mrs. Romi Dobrev during her speech. Cutting the cord...
NORD NEWS Autumn 2007

MMER” DREAM Mrs. Romi Dobrev
the fleet exactly as planned - at the end of spring and
beginning of summer 2007. What a perfect timing!
event. The shipyard had erected a huge and brightly
decorated naming platform just in front of the bows
of our beautiful vessels and the view was spectacular.
The ships had a special mystic aura about them,
with their names covered by colorful ribbons, and
the champagne bottles were ready for breaking. The
freshly painted glossy hulls of Reederei “NORD”s
biggest container ships just about to enter service
reminded us of the hard work done by both
shipbuilder and the Owner Site supervisors to make
this delivery possible.
The crews were lined up at the pier and just
like famous pop stars were surrounded by the local
"paparazzi" who were photographing and filming
the event. In fact the new “NORD” ships and their
crews were the stars of this unforgettable naming
day show and they were all acting as one.
The ceremony unfolded with ease and once
again we witnessed the respect and appreciation of
STX Shipbuilding towards Reederei “NORD”, not
just as another customer, but as a trustworthy and
well established business partner.
The Master of Ceremonies finally announced
that it was Godmothers time, so I and my Korean
"naming sister" stepped up front to do our
christening duties. Suddenly everything was so quite
and solemn, and I had the feeling that even the
summer air stood still for a while. The ritual phrases
came out easy and naturally, because in a moment
like this mistakes are not allowed. The champagne
bottles hit the hulls and splashed simultaneously,
followed by the roar of the ship sirens, the fireworks
and the cheers of all present. And so
“NORDSPRING” and “NORDSUMMER” joined
One look at the group photographs taken at
that moment will no doubt show you the festive
mood of the event. During the tour of the ships
that followed the naming ceremony we were shown
the main ship's compartments, all equipment was
so modern and technologically advanced, the cabins
and recreational rooms were spacey and well
furnished. The Bridge and ECR were also very well
designed. Even the galley looked like a space ship
with all the innovative cooking gadgets and polished
cutlery. It is really a pleasure to sail on these high
standard ships and a distinguished privilege for the
well trained “NORD” crews.
The naming day continued with a luncheon
hosted by STX Shipbuilding, where the godmothers
received exquisite and much appreciated gifts specially
selected by the Owner of Reederei “NORD”, while
the Site team supervisors and GL Class surveyors were
presented with memorable souvenirs from STX.
But as the wise man says, all good things
have an end. Only this time I have to admit that my
fairy tale still lingers on, thanks to the great honor
to be a "newborn" ship godmother, bestowed on me
by the Oldendorff family. My sincere thanks also to
the Management of Reederei “NORD”, all of the
staff and the thousands of hard working crew
members, including those manning my
“NORDSUMMER”, now riding the ocean waves.
Oh, I almost forgot to tell you one more thing
about the old compass that I mentioned earlier - it also
points to “NORD”. Permanently, of course!
Mrs. Oldendorff with Mr. Krause
in the centre and
Mr. Thomas Reich.
18 NORD NEWS Autumn 2007
....and
Congratulations to Mr. Bodo Krause, Director
On the 1st of July Mr. Krause celebrated his 30th anniversary at Reederei
"NORD" Klaus E. Oldendorff. Due to the christening of the new vessel
"NORDSPRING" the celebration had been postponed to the 12th of
July. It was Mr. Krause's wish to celebrate this event with a dinner at the
restaurant "Rodizio Panthera"with all the staff of the Hamburg office.
Rodizio is a Brazilian restaurant located near our office.
For everyone who hasn't heard of eating Rodizio, is a
culinary Brazilian tradition. You start off with a salad buffet next the
waiter walks around the table carrying long spits with all kinds of
meat. Then he cuts off little pieces according to your personal
preferences and appetite. Choices ranged from pork, beef, lamb,
turkey, chicken, sausages over peppers, mushrooms, beans, potatoes
to pineapple and crumbed bananas. Finally there is a delicious and
elegantly presented dessert buffet.
We met at the restaurant after work and gathered around a long table, had some lovely Italian or
Argentinian red wine and enjoyed the fabulous dinner in a typical South American atmosphere with live
music. Then Mr. Rybarczyk made a speech about Mr. Krause's work at Reederei "NORD"
Klaus E. Oldendorff who was presented with flowers and a commemorative silver plate by Mrs. Oldendorff.
Afterwards Mr. Krause gave a brief overview of his career with the company and that he still enjoys every
moment at Reederei "NORD" Klaus E. Oldendorff. We all were happy to spend the time together and
enjoyed the evening until late at night.
Congratulations to Mr. Milan Smrcek on completing
10 years of service.....
My first contact with Reederei “NORD” happened on 18th August
1993, in Hong Kong, when the agent from Wai Fat took me on board
MV “NORDSUND” to serve a 9 month contract as an engine cadet.
This was not my first contract, as I did my academy praxis on board a
polish steamship company vessel. But the first contract with “NORD”
was certainly one of the most important ones, as it can be called a real
'crash course' in engine room maintenance. My first Chief Engineer
was my today's colleague Mr. Grzegorz Kowalczyk and right after him
Mr. Roman Kalandyk. It was a busy time, but in a view of the future
handling of 'situations' very helpful indeed.
There was hardly a day without surprises and with the
Mr. Smrcek, receiving his commemorative 10
year anniversary bowl from Mr. Rybarczyk,
Managing Director of Reederei “NORD”
Klaus E. Oldendorff GmbH on the left.
sailing on the route Hong Kong - Keelung - Kaohsiung - Hong Kong every surprise was unexpected. But I
must admit that under the kind 'coaching' of C/E Kowalczyk and C/E Kalandyk I was getting along with
the work. With some slips here and there, but ahead. After this vessel followed the old “NORDSTAR”,
then the “NORDSINO” and so on. Apart from the vessels built in Poland and tankers I think I went
through most of the types of vessels. Over the years I worked my way through the different ranks and the
biggest change was from 2/E to C/E rank. To make the ticket was very easy compared to taking over the
highest position in the engine room. Especially, when there is nobody else to turn to for advice, but yourself.
Then came the possibility to join the Hamburg office as a Superintendent, which appeared as a new
challenge and a new perspective to my working life. So I joined the Hamburg office in March 2004, with
only a rather faint idea of how much work and what type of problems were awaiting for me. I have a feeling
I haven't stopped working since, which I believe, is the general feeling of the people working in shipping.
I would like to thank the company for the years I spent working for Reederei “NORD”
Klaus E. Oldendorff, my friends, colleagues and crewmembers I met over the years ashore and at sea for
their support and kind cooperation and I look forward to the years to come!

ashore
...and to Mrs. Vaso Constantinou, on completing five years of
service.
Mrs. Constantinou joined Reederei “NORD” Klaus E. Oldendorff Ltd.
as an Assistant Personnel Accountant, in April 2002. She was promoted
to Personnel Accountant and is now an invaluable part of the Personnel
Department. On a personal note, Mrs. Constantinou is married to
Yiannos and has two beautiful daughters, Pani and Andreanna (who was
featured in the last issue of our magazine). She is pictured here,
General Manager of Reederei “NORD” Klaus E. Oldendorff Limited.
Welcome...to the next generation of “NORD” employees
Reederei “NORD”
Klaus E. Oldendorff GmbH
and Mrs. Ilona Schneikart
on the birth of their son
Helge Kasimir.
Congratulations to Capt. Bogdan Marek...
Capt. Marek knows very well the importance of exercise
for a healthy life. While at sea, he tries to have as much
exercise as possible, even if it is only jogging on the deck.
When on vacation he exercises even more by rowing,
weight lifting, swimming etc. He also takes part in
mountain bike marathon events.
Recently, he took part in an 80 km race in Polczyn Zdroj,
Poland that took nearly 8 hours to complete and he won
First Prize for his age class.
Well Done Captain! Perhaps we can all follow your
example and try to exercise more for a healthier life!
