Dear Seafarers and Readers!
S
o we have finally come to the end of another glorious summer, which I must say
passed us by very quickly. I took the opportunity to sail around the Mediterranean
as I always did with my late husband on our yacht the "Happy Four".
On this occasion, I visited some small ports in France for the first time
which was quite delightful.
I, like most of you may have noticed that Mother Nature again played some fickle tricks on
Europe this summer with Portugal and Spain having very high temperatures and drought
leading to raging bush fires, whilst in central Europe we had floods in several countries like
Southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland. On the other side of the Atlantic basin the
hurricane season is still going strong with 'Katrina' being one of the strongest storms on
record in the US since 1969. This year has been predicted as one of the most active
hurricane seasons by the weathermen. What is causing all these extremes in the weather?
Is it the effect of global warming? Some may say so, whilst others disagree.
Only time will tell, I guess!
Of course all these storms are driving up the price of oil further which no doubt are causing
hardships to citizens the world over with higher fuel prices.
On the commercial front, this month is once again one of the most exciting times in the
shipping circles in Cyprus. "Maritime Cyprus" is approaching us again and apparently 1000
delegates are expected this time, confirming it as one of the most important maritime
gatherings in the world. We are looking forward to this and as you may notice we have
dedicated the current issue of the NORD NEWS to this event as we do every time the
conference comes around.
As to our fleet, we are now looking forward to the delivery of our next new building, the 1st
of the 2600 TEU container vessels built for us by STX in South Korea. She is due for
delivery on the 8th of November and I am sure you will be able to read about this event in
the winter issue.
As to the markets themselves, I must say that they have been quiet due to the summer
holiday season, where most of them slipped and it is only now that they are starting show
some signs of activity, albeit mixed, with the dry bulk index creeping up, and the tanker and
the container markets still slipping further. No doubt within this month we will have some
clear indications as to which way they are all headed!
Wishing all of you calm seas and happy sailing!
he late Mr. Klaus E. Oldendorff,
founder of Reederei "NORD"
Klaus E. Oldendorff, was a strong
individual, well known in the
international shipping industry and a
remarkable leader to many. He was "one great
man with a great story to tell". This
outstanding personality has created this very
successful company, and in many ways has
made his mark in shipping history.
Let's take a journey through this
great story. Mr. Klaus E. Oldendorff was
born in Lübeck on 14th April 1933. He
was the eldest son of the Lübeck-based
shipowner Egon Oldendorff and his wife
Gisela, and not surprisingly, shipping
dominated life already in his parental home.
Mr. Oldendorff always had a very
keen interest in his father's activities and
did his apprenticeship (1951 to 1953)
with the Hamburg shipowning and ship
broking firm of Helmut Thimm & Co.
He then worked for shipping companies in
Great Britain, Sweden and the
United States. In 1955 he returned to
Lübeck to be appointed senior
PAST, PRESENT
A WHOLE
manager and head of the superintendency
department in his father's company and was
also made a Managing Director of Reederei
Egon L. Oldendorff GmbH & Co.
Mr. Klaus E. Oldendorff opted
for independence on 20th November 1964,
when he purchased the 1417
tdw single-decker BOCKHOLM
and under his ownership renamed her
NORDHOLM. The company was
officially founded on 12th December the
same year. From then on the NORD prefix was
incorporated on all of the company's
ship names.
In May of 1965 the one-ship
company turned into a fleet when
Mr. Oldendorff purchased the 2758 GRT
motor freighter LEVANTE, built in 1951
by Flensburger Schiffsbau-Gesellschaft, and
renamed it NORDMARK. Through the
years as the fleet grew so did his staff in the
Hamburg office.
No great success is achieved
without hard times and struggles fought.

AUS E. OLDENDORFF:
AND FUTURE
LIFETIME
In 1982 the freight markets being in the
doldrums and very hard times were faced,
particularly in Germany with the heavy taxes
that had to be paid even during the years when
only "losses were produced".
It was December 1986 when he took
another big plunge and Reederei "NORD"
Klaus E. Oldendorff Ltd. was born here in
Limassol, Cyprus.
Through the years Mr. Oldendorff
became well known on the island and was
respected by all, as anyone who knew him had
a lot to learn from him. Among many other
achievements, he made his mark in the
Cyprus Shipping Industry. Not only did he
make our company a Founding Member
of the Cyprus Shipping Council,
but he was the driving force
behind the establishment and
subsequent building-up of
it and as such, he served many times as
President of the Council and was
later even declared Honorary President.
Sadly, as you all well know,
Mr. Oldendorff is no longer with us.
However, he is still in our memory and soul.
All his visions, hard work, determination and
achievements have been embedded in all of his
employees, giving us the strength, will and
endurance to continue this success story.
Since the 17th of March 2003, after
the sad demise of Mr. Oldendorff, the
company under the skillful guidance of
Mrs. Christiane E. Oldendorff, has continued
to grow. The two companies -
Reederei "NORD" Klaus E. Oldendorff GmbH
in Hamburg and Reederei "NORD"
Klaus E. Oldendorff Ltd. in Limassol -
now operate a total fleet of 36 ships.
In addition, seven newbuildings are on
order which will allow us consistent and
prosperous growth.
It is envisaged that one day
the helm of this remarkable company
will be handed over to the next generation,
Messrs Christian and Nikolaus Oldendorff,
the twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. Oldendorff
as heirs apparent.
I
n the winter of 1967, way down in the depths of the sea outside of
the town of Kyrenia, Andreas Kariolou, a Greek-Cypriot diver
accidentally discovered the "Kyrenia Ship".
The "Kyrenia" was sunk around 300 BC, during the decline of
Alexander the Great, a victim of pirates. It is the oldest and best-preserved
ship of the Classical period of Greek civilization ever to be found, as 75% of
the ship measuring 15 metres in length, was preserved under a protective
layer of sand.
The "Kyrenia" was a "shell" constructed ship with edge-to-edge
timbers held together by mortises and tenons (planking) made out of
Aleppo pine. It is estimated that it sailed on a single mast with a square sail.
When the "Kyrenia" sank it was carrying amphorae used for the
transfer of wine and for the storage of almonds. Amongst other items such
as bronze coins, domestic pottery was also found consisting of plates, bowls,
ladles, sieves, a copper cauldron, oil jugs, cups and wooden spoons possibly
belonging to the crew.
Mr. Harry Tzalas, the president of the Hellenic Institute for the
Preservation of Nautical Tradition and professors Katzev and Steffy
constructed an exact replica in Athens and launched it in Piraeus on
June 22, 1985. They called it "Kyrenia II". It became a symbol of hope and
freedom taking part in a number of events all over the world:
· In July 1986 she took part in the celebrations for the 100 years of
the Statue of Liberty in New York;
· In April 1987 she sailed from Cyprus to Greece on an experimental
voyage and survived two storms, completing her journey in 20 days;
· In February 1988 she was transported to Japan and sailed its ports
and then was exhibited in the ancient capital of Japan Nara, for the Silk
Road Celebrations. (Kyrenia III was constructed in Japan and is an
ambassador of Cyprus and Greece, being exhibited in the town of Fukuoka);
· In May 1989 she sailed in the river Elbe in Germany, celebrating
800 years of the port of Hamburg.
The value and uniqueness of "Kyrenia II" dictated the necessity for
her to be preserved as a Museum Exhibit in the Nautical Heritage Museum
in Ayia Napa, Cyprus.
On 10th November 2002, the "Kyrenia-Liberty" was launched by
the Charalambos Avgoustis Shipping Company in Limassol. She participated
as an ambassador for Cyprus in the 2004 Greece Olympic Games. Her name
portrays the hope not only for all Kyrenians, she represents the right to live
freely and to develop, including Cyprus' shipping industry.
NORD VETTING NEWS
A
fter a careful
review of the
vetting inspection
results of our
tankers over the last few years
we realised that a significant
improvement gap remains in
all matters relating to the
issue of vetting and vetting criteria. Today, in the
highly competitive oil trades, the vetting process plays a
very important role in presenting the company’s right
image and reputation towards third parties. For very
understandable reasons, tankers are
always in the limelight since a
single 'sensitive to public' incident
may heavily damage the company's
reputation as a responsible
and prudent tanker owner and
operator. Therefore, good vetting
performances and vetting records
are the only way to stand up to
scrutiny in case of an inevitable
incident.
The vetting process is the
means by which an oil company
determines whether it can take a
specific ship for charter and a
specific tanker operator for
business. Managing and assessing
oil transportation risk underlies
the philosophy of this process. The lower the risk a
vessel presents makes it the better choice.
Essentially, the best way to be the better choice and
being hired is to provide to a potential charterer the
right quality of both - ship and ship's operation,
including management, manning and maintenance.
We as a company took a long hard look at
our vetting policies and procedures, focusing on
some areas of weakness where we can achieve higher
levels of performance and strengthen the
management of our vetting activities on board and
ashore. We then decided to systematise and collate
all the information relating to the tanker vetting
process in the form of a vetting newsletter - 'Nord
Vetting News' and transmit it electronically in PDF
format to the tanker fleet every 6 months. The first
'infant' issue has been sent out to all tankers on
July 7th 2005 and we have received very
positive feedback from our masters.
CAPT. ANDREI HUDZASVILI
Will it work? It is a complex issue. We want
to be proactive in vetting inspection procedures not
reactive and focus more on innovation and
transparency. Therefore, the primary purpose of the
'Nord Vetting News' is to imply greater sharing of
relevant vetting information and establish greater
understanding and awareness of this important
process across the tanker fleet, keeping our
shipboard personnel well informed and involved. It
also aims to provide the information for enhancing
the pre-inspection procedures by targeting
most frequent vetting observations, assessing causes
of these observations and
offering measures to prevent
them from happening again. At
the same time, through this new
edition we will be aspiring to a
higher and more uniform
quality standard of the vetting
practices within the tanker fleet
by providing the relevant
analysis and statistics of the
vetting inspection results.
Finally, this is also
important from the point of
view of the forthcoming
implementation of Tanker
Management and Self
Assessment (TMSA) program.
This is a new program that has
been specifically designed by the Oil Companies'
International Maritime Forum (OCIMF) as the
principal tool for the advancement stage of quality
management in tanker operations. Through this
program a tanker operator will be required to
openly demonstrate its dynamic ability to comply
and stay abreast of the best industry management
practices and operational standards. A major TMSA
objective is disciplined and systematic approach to
continuous improvement. In the near future as a
part of the tanker vetting inspection scheme the oil
companies would be able to review the operator's
TMSA input on the OCIMF database system along
with the ship's vetting inspection reports to make a
conclusive vetting decision. This means that
innovative thinking and more effective strategies are
needed to integrate quality in the tanker
vetting process in order to achieve the
TMSA objective. The “Nord Vetting News”
is only a first step in this direction.
Now, here it is:
As you already know from internal
mine - mind you, my father was a Master before
World War II - my first job in London was with a
P&I Club (Mutual Steamship Billbrough Brothers Ltd.
as they called themselves then).
Moving on to Hamburg-Sud in
Hamburg as Assistant to the Chairman of the
Executive Board first, with containerization in its
infancy then, I ended up in New York
and became Chief Operating Officer
of Columbus Line, Hamburg-Sud's
liner company trading between the US / Canada
and Australia / New Zealand.
NORD NEWS Autumn 2005
In 1976, after a stint of several months at
the Harvard Business School in Boston,
obtaining an MBA, I formed my own consulting
firm in New York and assisted international
enterprises in their aim to establish operations in
America. With more than 15 years spent mainly
in North America, I decided to become a U.S.
citizen.
All said and done, another consulting
project brought me back to Hamburg in 1985
with the business focus on corporate
reorganization and turn-arounds in the field of
logistics, from shipping to freight forwarding,
trucking, warehousing and travel.
A particularly rewarding assignment
during this time was my association for a number
of years with MEYER WERFT in Papenburg, a
leading builder of cruise ships in Germany,
during which time I served as President of Meyer
Werft Philadelphia, Inc.
As time went on and up to late 2005, I
was also involved in investments of patent
marketing and information technology.
You can well imagine, that coming back
in my present appointment to such a
reputable and successful shipping company as
Reederei "NORD" Klaus E. Oldendorff Ltd.,
represents a real challenge and privilege for me.
When Mrs. Oldendorff as Chairman of
our Supervisory Board introduced me to the staff
members in Limassol not too long ago - in the
meantime I also had the pleasure of meeting
some of our Masters in the fleet - I was
impressed, above all by the professionality and
loyalty expressed in a casual and friendly way. Let
me say here, that this was a rare, positive and very
encouraging experience indeed.
I trust that this short summary is
enough to know a little about your new
Managing Director?
I look forward to working with you all
and hope that we can jointly push forward from
what has been achieved so far.
Sincerely,
Dr. Michael Schwarz
