The Benedictine Monastery of New Norcia, the only 

monastic town in Australia, was until 1973 New 

Norcia Mission - home to generations of Aboriginal

Unholy Orders 

This moving account traces the story of abuse in 

Scottish orphanages by Catholic nuns. Following 

the newspaper release of the abuse, a class 

action formed in the late 1990’s and quickly 

escalated to represent 450 people. Claims are 

for abuse that spread from the 1920s to late 

70s, and charges the nuns with degrading and 

inhumane punishment. Cath Yeomans, now living 

in Australia, is the oldest claimant. She and her 

sisters spent ten years in the ‘care’ of the Sisters of Nazareth in Glasgow. 

This story provides a framework for other peoples’ stories, as well as wider 

political issues and questions.

The episode ‘Nation’ looks at Europe at the end of 

the 19th and the beginning of the 20th Centuries 

when the great empires were crumbling and the 

peoples of Europe turned to nationhood to instil 

security and a sense of belonging. In Turkey, the 

reign of the tyrannical sultans was swept away, 

and replaced in 1908 by a group known as the 

Young Turks, a group of military men who no longer 

saw the empire as a priority. The episode ‘Vengeance’ looks at genocides in 

the former Republic of Yugoslavia and Rwanda. These campaigns of mass 

murder were conducted by people who felt that they were part of a group 

that had suffered in the past, and wanted to right the wrongs of history.

Against the Tide 

This episode traces the early days of Mao Zedong from his birth in 1893; 

his founding, with eleven others, of the Congress of the Chinese Communist 

Party in 1921; the rule of Chiang Kaishek’s Nationalists and the Long 

March, the epic retreat of Mao’s Red Army in 1934. In 1937 the Japanese 

invasion of China forced the Nationalists into a patriotic alliance with the 

Red Army. After the Japanese defeat, the Nationalist Army turned on the 

Communists, but the Red Army proved to be stronger. Chiang Kaishek fled 

to Taiwan and Mao Zedong became China’s uncontested leader.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice 

In the early years of the People’s Republic, Chinese policy followed an 

orthodox Stalinist path but diverged from the Soviet model and took on a 

new, specifically Maoist quality after Stalin’s death. Mao initiated a series 

of political movements and believed that creating people’s communes 

would bring about an economic upsurge and enable China to catch up 

with industrialised countries like England, France and America. However, 

the venture went badly wrong and became one of the biggest disasters in 

modern Chinese history. A serious famine set in and 20 million Chinese 

died of starvation. 


Not a Dinner Party 

In late 1965 high school and university students challenged the authorities. 

Mao Zedong expressed his support and students around the nation became 

Chairman Mao’s Red Guards. Mao called for the destruction of the old 

world in order to construct a new socialist world - the Cultural Revolution 

had begun. It is claimed that at the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976, 

over a million people died due to violence against them. 


Mao is Not Dead 

In 1971 Mao’s appointed successor Lin Biao attempts to fly to the Soviet 

Union after his plot against Mao fails but his plane crashes in Mongolia. In 

1972 the historic visit of President Nixon to the People’s Republic of China 

shifts the global balance of power. In 1973 Mao makes his last appearance 

before a large Party gathering and in January 1976 Premier Zhou Enlai dies. 

The whole nation is thrown into mourning over his early death. In July, 

northern China is struck by a massive earthquake which kills a quarter of a 

million people and on 9 September 1976, Mao Zedong passes away.

meets members of the Mursi tribe who shed light 

on the extraordinary custom of women who, upon 

reaching maturity, insert a clay disc in their lower 

lip - the bigger the better! 


Madagascar 

For Malagasies, the process of exhuming ancestral remains and rewrapping 

them in fresh shrouds while catching up on village gossip is nothing outof-the-ordinary. 

The Famadhiana or “turning of the bones” ceremony is 

where Pria begins his journey through Madagascar. Ancestral worship 

underpins Malagasy culture and this ceremony is a chance for the living to 

pay their respects to the dead. 


Zanzibar 

“Zanzibaris are like Pilau” says Mohammed Ali 

(not the champ!) over lunch with Pria at “The 

Passing Show” restaurant in Stone Town. Like the 

rice dish which is generously flavoured by a variety 

of colourful spices, the ethnic mix of Unguja Island 

is varied and includes; Swahili, Shirazi Persian, 

Portuguese and Omani Arab. Although officially 

part of mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar is culturally, 

politically and architecturally unique. 


Mali 

Pria’s journey into Mali begins with Timbuktu, home to the Tuareg people 

who roam the semi-desert; next, south to Mopti on the Niger River and 

then into the heart of the country of the Dogon, known for their intricate art 

forms and unique, decorated mud houses. Pria visits the Grande Mosquee 

in Djenne; and talks with French-based, Malian singer, Rokia Traore, about 

her country’s renowned musical tradition, before following her to Paris. 


Black Paris 

From wide-boy comedians to angry authors, Pria 

ends this series on Africa in Paris. Given France’s 

large colonial influence in Africa, Pria samples 

the African diaspora in Paris - asking why they 

are more French than African and why France is 

perceived to have been a “better coloniser” than 

the rest.

The Exodus 

The archaeological and historical 

investigation continues in Egypt 

where, according to the biblical 

text, the descendents of Abraham

the leaders Joseph and Moses. 

Moses liberates the Hebrews from 

slavery before leading them out 

of Egypt - called the Exodus - and 

towards the ‘Promised Land’. This 

episode of the series attempts to investigate if this event 

in the Old Testament really happened. When and why was

The Kings 

This episode returns to the history 

of the Israelite nation as recorded 

in the Bible. Moses entrusts the 

conquest of Canaan to Joshua, who 

led Israel into battle. At the time of 

a thunder storm, the tribes of Israel 

take possession of Canaan - the 

‘Promised Land’ - and settle there. 

The archaeological investigation 

in this episode contradicts the biblical account. This third 

episode then moves to King David and his son Solomon, 

asking the question, ‘What do we know of them?’ And what 

do we know of the two Kingdoms of Israel that were located 

in Canaan: Israel of the north, rich and powerful; and 

Judah of the south, small and impoverished? How does the 

tension between these two brother kingdoms impact upon 

the drafting of some of the books of the Old Testament?

Islam 

Christy Kenneally first visits the Djenne Mosque, 

the largest dried earth building in the world, in 

Djenne, Mali. From Mali Christy travels to India to 

look at the Jama Masjid mosque in Delhi. Istanbul, 

in Turkey, where Europe meets Asia, became a 

showcase of Islamic art and architecture, evidently

Hinduism 

Christy Kenneally begins his search for Hinduism 

as it is expressed in art and architecture in 

Varanasi, the oldest inhabited city in the world. A 

microcosm of Hinduism, it has always attracted a 

large number of worshippers and pilgrims, some 

of whom come to Varanasi to die and be cremated 

on one of the pyres set up along the banks of the 

Ganges. From Varanasi, Christy travels south to 

Mamallapuram, to visit the temples, caves and 

rock sculptures of that period. The last stop is Khajuraho in Central India 

with its temples built by the Chandella kings. 


Buddhism 

Christy Kenneally begins in Bodh Ghaya in India. 

The Maha Bodhi temple of Bodh Gaya is one of 

the important places of worship for Buddhists, 

marking the holy spot of the enlightenment of 

the Master. Next Christy visits Sanchi in Central 

Madhya Pradesh, which became the centre of 

Buddhist art and architecture between the 3rd 

and 7th centuries AD. From there he goes to visit 

Borobodur in Indonesia. Before ending his journey, 

Christy travels to a spot near Carmel in New York state, where Chuang Yen 

Monastery, a complex of buildings dedicated to Buddhism, houses.

James Gleeson - The Artist 

as an Evolving Landscape 

Gleeson was born in the northern Sydney suburb 

of Hornsby in November 1915. He studied art and 

where his first surrealist painting City on a Tongue 

was included in a student exhibition in 1938. He has 

exhibited regularly since 1939, although for a while 

writing, especially poetry, occupied Gleeson almost 

as much as painting. Gleeson’s paintings begin as 

a series of rough sketches, or, as he says “scrappy 

ideas” that eventually lead to what is the jumping off point for a painting. His 

influences include Breton, Magritte and Dali and throughout the program he

Paris Dreaming 

In May 2006 in Paris, President Chirac opened the 

world’s first museum to acknowledge the inherent 

artistic value of indigenous art works. The design of
