ANCIENT DISCOVERIES 3
3 x 60
Today we live in a world unimaginable
to even our great-grandparents. It’s an age
of hi-tech, jet aircraft, supercomputers and
intelligent machines. Since the Industrial
Revolution our world has progressed at lightning
pace, leaving all previous civilisations far behind
it. Or has it? Ancient Discoveries explores the
amazing high technology of the Classical World
and asks why, with all these incredible devices,
the Industrial Revolution didn’t happen two
thousand years earlier. SBS Television 2003.
Computing
The computer - a device for making
automatic calculations. The first electrical
computers only emerged in the Second
World War, the first mechanical ones barely
a hundred years earlier. Yet two thousand
two hundred years before that the Greeks
had machines that could do exactly the same things. This
program takes us back to the classical world of the third
century BC to tell the stories of three of the most important
machines in history - Ctesibius’ clock, Vitruvius’ odometer
and the spectacular Antikythera mechanism.
hardships; used as child labourers, starvation let them to be
forced to eat the food set aside for the chickens, and cruel
Grandfathers And Revolutions
Several years after arriving in Australia with his mother and
two sisters, 22 year old Brisbane filmmaker Peter Hegedus
received some Hungarian secret government documents
from the 1950’s which revealed the execution order of an
these documents could possibly have been implemented by
his grandfather Andras Hegedus, who was the Prime Minister
The Executioners
The death penalty has always been
surrounded by a great deal of controversy,
and yet little has been said about those
actually responsible for carrying out the
deed itself - the executioners. Where do
they come from? How do they prepare for
such work? Are they able to lead a normal
social life? What effect does their work have on them? How
did the lives of executioners in the 16th century differ from
those of the 20th century? Underlying the long history of
this ‘gruesome profession’ and the men who practiced it,
is an extraordinary human adventure intimately linked with
the lives of migrants from Europe and Asia
Film Australia’s Immigration
When Australia embarked on its mass migration program
after World War Two, it was with a movie camera in hand.
Film Australia, as the Government’s film unit, made films
to attract migrants and to change attitudes to new arrivals.
More recently, it made films about how migrants themselves
were changed by coming here and the impact they had on
shaping the nation. Film Australia’s Immigration presents a
selection of fascinating films from this historically significant
collection, along with contemporary interviews with some
of the people who made them and some who were in them.
Three million have been killed in the war and 1.3 million
Wherever humans go, they take their
diseases with them. Today 1.5 billion people
travel by air every year. Deadly diseases
can reach the other side of the world in a
matter of hours, and diseases we thought
we’d seen the back of are coming back
to haunt us in new, more deadly forms.
‘Alien Invaders’ reveals how four different microbes have
succeeded in invading new territories.
VOICES FROM THE
HOLOCAUST
set
of3
Witness: ‘Voices from the Holocaust’ is a
prize-winning documentary, in which
testimonies of Holocaust survivors and witnesses,
some recorded as early as 1979, archival footage,
and personal photographs and documents reveal
the Nazi era through the memories of those
who were there. A Hitler Youth, a Jesuit priest,
resistance fighters, concentration camp survivors,
an American POW, and a liberator, present a
vivid image of the Holocaust in their own words.
Since many of the witnesses were in their teens
or younger during the war years, students can
understand and identify with their experiences on
a more personal level. The accompanying book of
the same title provides resource material and the
opportunity for students to learn more about the
survivors in the documentary.
This three-part series provides history that
students can understand on their own level
The Great Depression - Part 1
Post war boom and bust. The Great Depression had its roots
in the First World War. We examine the efforts of various
countries, including the USA, Canada, Australia, and several
in Europe, to make the transition from war economies to
more normal market conditions. It covers the post-war boom
in manufacturing and wheat production in the USA and
Canada; the prosperous “Roaring Twenties”; the effects of
severe drought conditions in North America; the economic,
agricultural, and societal conditions that led to the “Crash of
‘29”. The program uses archival film and images to clearly
depict the struggle of ordinary people to survive. It concludes
with the election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the U.S. &
his goal of returning confidence to the American people.
The Great Depression - Part 2
The global hardships of the 30s, economic solutions, the
road to war. This second program concludes the Great
Depression story. It begins with the “Gold Standard”, its
influence on world trade, and explains the circular flow of
a healthy economy. FDR’s “New Deal” in the USA is covered
extensively, as is the establishment of work camps in Canada
and the ensuing “On-to-Ottawa Trek”. As countries all over
the world tried to protect their domestic markets, they placed
high tariffs on imported goods; the video shows that this had
the effect of worsening the depression by bringing stagnation
to world trade. The effect of the Peace Treaty of Versailles
on Germany is explained in the story of Germany’s build-up
to the Second World War. The video concludes with Japan’s
military expansion and the USA’s entry into the war.
Rather than being a grimlitany of disaster,
this series analyses the social, political
and historical conditions that make ethnic
persecution of the Jews throughout history
it continues by looking at colonisers in North
America, Australia and South Africa who justified brutal
expansion in the name of ‘civilising’ the native peoples:
then considers ethnic cleansing of political ends. The
episode ‘Land’ focuses on the colonisers, who turned land
into property, clearing the indigenous people, establishing
Europeans as the new owners. This clear and settle policy
was first tried out by the English in Ireland but was also used
The episode ‘Nation’ looks at Europe at the
end of the 19th and the beginning of the
20th Centuries when the great empires were
crumbling and the peoples of Europe turned
to nationhood to instil security and a sense
of belonging. In Turkey, the reign of the tyrannical sultans
was swept away, and replaced in 1908 by a group known as
the Young Turks, a group of military men who no longer saw
the empire as a priority. The episode ‘Vengeance’ looks at
genocide’s in the former Republic of Yugoslavia and Rwanda.
These campaigns of mass murder were conducted by people
who felt that they were part of a group that had suffered in
the past, and wanted to right the wrongs of history. In the
