A little background on this strange passage might help. Way back in the time of the Israelite sojourn in the desert, the Hebrews
suffered all the trials of desert life. They were hungry and thirsty, and the daily manna was so monotonous that they cried out to God,
saying We detest this miserable food! God then added to their misery by “sending” snakes to bite them! Yikes.
They repented of their rebelliousness and asked God to forgive them and take the snakes away. And here’s what’s fascinating:
God’s cure for the “snake-bit Hebrews” was for Moses to mount a bronze serpent on a pole and have them gaze on it. And those who
had been bitten were cured (Numbers 21:4-9). Huh.
We’re right in the middle of Lent now, and the struggle with our own hungers and thirsts is in full gear. Might we take inspiration
from Moses, and look straight into the heart of that which has wounded us so badly in our lives? Can we ask for the grace to gaze on
our wounds? The jobs we’ve lost, the deaths we’ve grieved, the gifts we’ve squandered, the children who’ve struggled with addictions
and loss of faith—Jesus asks us to look on them, and then look on Him, raised up on the cross. Here, oh Israel is your true healer. Gaze
on him. Trust that he can take you the rest of the way, through this Lent and every wilderness ahead.
Kathy McGovern c. 2012
What wounds are you avoiding naming?
PALM
Fr Marty and the Queen of Peace Finance Council are launching the PALM program. PALM stands for Parish Alms for Lenten
Maintenance. Between roof repairs, parking lot repairs, and stained glass window repairs we have a need to raise over $100,000. So
the Finance Council, with the full knowledge and support of Fr Marty, has approved a second collection for all remaining Saturday’s
and Sunday’s through Easter. The money will be used strictly for the repair of our aging/leaking roofs, deteriorating parking lots and
damaged stained glass windows. While we understand that the economy is still struggling and that many of you are struggling
financially as well, we ask that you be as generous as possible. You will know it is the second collection by the purple baskets the
ushers will be sending around. After Easter we will let you know the results.
FOR THE UNEMPLOYED
Recognizing there may be a number of our parishioners currently unemployed, we would like to offer the following service:
If you are unemployed, and would like, we will post your resume on our website and indicate in the weekly bulletin that your resume
Cuarto Domingo de Cuaresma
MISAS EN ESPAÑOL
Sábado 6:30 p. m.
Domingo 1:30 p. m. y 7:00 p. m.
Y he
He aquí, ¡hoy, Israel¡ tu verdadero sanador.
