Department of Conservation<br />

The Department of Conservation looks<br />

after conservation campsites, huts and<br />

cottages on a number of islands in the<br />

Hauraki Gulf.<br />

Campsites<br />

These campsites offer a “back to<br />

nature” experience, with basic<br />

facilities. All have toilets and a water<br />

supply, and most Great Barrier<br />

campsites have outdoor cold showers.<br />

For everything else you have to be self<br />

sufficient.<br />

Bookings<br />

Individual campers should book<br />

at all campsites except Home Bay,<br />

Motutapu, which operates on a first<br />

come first served basis. Bookings are<br />

essential at Great Barrier campsites<br />

over the Christmas-New Year period.<br />

Huts<br />

The hut on Great Barrier Island<br />

operates as a back country hut on the<br />

open door system. Accommodation<br />

on Tiritiri Matangi Island needs to be<br />

booked well in advance. Take food and<br />

linen (sheets, blankets or sleeping bag,<br />

towels, tea towels and pillow cases),<br />

and a torch.<br />

Care Code<br />

• No open fires.<br />

• Leave pets at home. Dogs and cats<br />

are a threat to wildlife and are not<br />

permitted on conservation lands,<br />

including all campsites.<br />

• Bring rubbish bags and take your<br />

rubbish home.<br />

• Conserve water. Treat drinking<br />

water where advised.<br />

• Consider your fellow campers and<br />

nearby residents.<br />
