Department of Conservation
The Department of Conservation looks
after conservation campsites, huts and
cottages on a number of islands in the
Hauraki Gulf.
Campsites
These campsites offer a “back to
nature” experience, with basic
facilities. All have toilets and a water
supply, and most Great Barrier
campsites have outdoor cold showers.
For everything else you have to be self
sufficient.
Bookings
Individual campers should book
at all campsites except Home Bay,
Motutapu, which operates on a first
come first served basis. Bookings are
essential at Great Barrier campsites
over the Christmas-New Year period.
Huts
The hut on Great Barrier Island
operates as a back country hut on the
open door system. Accommodation
on Tiritiri Matangi Island needs to be
booked well in advance. Take food and
linen (sheets, blankets or sleeping bag,
towels, tea towels and pillow cases),
and a torch.
Care Code
• No open fires.
• Leave pets at home. Dogs and cats
are a threat to wildlife and are not
permitted on conservation lands,
including all campsites.
• Bring rubbish bags and take your
rubbish home.
• Conserve water. Treat drinking
water where advised.
• Consider your fellow campers and
nearby residents.
