Chapter 2 thought he heard the sound of muffled murmuring. He quietly peeked his head inside and saw Henry knotted around a set of bed sheets. The man went in and sat down quietly next to a limp ball of limbs. “Henry? It’s your Papa,” Mr. Lee whispered. After a minute of silence, he picked through the covers to find his boy’s face. “Son, won’t you tell me what’s bothering you?” “Will you and Mama ever break up like Walsh’s parents?” Henry asked, peeking out of the covers. “And if you do, will Mai Mai still take care of me?” Mr. Lee cradled his son’s head and rocked him for a few lasting moments. “Henry, your family will always be together. We won’t lose anyone. I promise. Not your mother, not me, not you or Mai Mai.” In spite of his father’s faith, Henry still looked heartbroken. “Papa,” the youngster sighed. “The whole reason I entered the tournament was to win that trip to Hong Kong – so I could surprise you and Mama. Why won’t you and Mama go with us?” Mr. Lee looked down at the bundle of boy in his arms. He reflected deeply on what his father had taught him while growing up in Hong Kong. Never live in the shadow of fear, but in the sunlight of courage. Henry’s father then stroked his proud chin and arrived at a decision. “Henry, I want you to call the Buttums’ estate and see if they’d still be willing to send Peter. Your mother and I will go.” Sparkles of amazement lit up in Henry’s eyes. He ran into the den and flipped open his cell phone. Within five minutes, Peter was leaping for joy at the Buttums’ stately manor, his parents gladly agreeing to let him go. Anticipation began to throb in Henry’s heart as he ran and told his father. 20

The estate looked noticeably different since the Lees last visited. Crabgrass overran all the lawns and large squawking crows were living in every fountain. When Mr. Lee rang the doorbell he also noticed the front steps were dirty and unswept. After several minutes, Lolana Walker answered in a frumpy sweatshirt, looking nearly fifteen pounds heavier and rubbing her eyes. “Oh, hello,” she said, making no effort to let either Mr. Lee or Henry inside. “Mrs. Walker,” Mr. Lee smiled, “I’m here to ask if Walsh can go with us to the competition in Hong Kong.” “I see,” the woman answered, slipping a few Bon-Bons into her mouth as she stared off into the woods. “Well, as you know, this has been a really hard time for us.” “Yes, I understand,” Henry’s father assured. “But I think this will raise your son’s spirits. At least he’ll be focusing on something else for a while.” Lolana looked down at Henry and agreed. “Yeah. Maybe you’re right. Anyway, that’s Walsh’s week to go stay with his father,” she scoffed vengefully and stuffed a few more Bon-Bons into her mouth. Though Henry was not allowed to see Walsh that afternoon, the boy just knew his friend’s heart would soon be soaring like a jet. 21
