Hong Kong
Anne Mai peered into the beyond with him.
The sunlight spread a royal orange carpet across the
waters as though welcoming them to the east.
“Look! We’re here!” Mr. Lee pointed eagerly.
Anne Mai turned and saw the stunning
metropolis of Hong Kong on the horizon. It looked
like castles of light growing out of the water. Ocean
waves foamed along the island’s edge, teeming with
sampans (which are small island boats).
The Lees’ jet sank into the cityscape and
landed smoothly at a private hangar in Hong Kong’s
international airport. Everyone awoke yawning and
stretching. A few minutes later, the pilots released a
stairway from the aircraft’s belly.
Once on the tarmac, the tourists met with
customs officials and began picking up their
luggage. However, when the customs officials saw
Mr. Lee they ran up and bowed three times each.
Mr. Lee quickly dismissed them in Cantonese.
“Papa, do these men know you?” Anne Mai
wanted to know.
“No. They must have me confused with
somebody else,” Mr. Lee answered curtly.
“But, Papa…”
“Mai Mai! Look over there!” Mr. Lee quickly
redirected his daughter’s attention to a sharp oblong
skyscraper. “That building is I.M. Pei’s Bank of
China. Isn’t it magnificent?”
“What? Oh. That’s beautiful, Papa,” Anne Mai
agreed.
“Henry, come over here and see this.” Mr. Lee
tried to corral his son.
But Henry was off to one side with Walsh and
Peter. Together, the three boys stood ogling
something else along the city skyline.
