All that and Dim Sum
Walsh and Peter looked up with rounded eyes.
Mr. Lee scowled. “It’s just journalism,” he
assured. “It’s their job to sell newspapers with
headlines like that.”
Henry examined the captions. “But it says,
‘The Monster’s Lair is Almost Complete,’ and isn’t
that a picture of uncle’s new building?”
Mr. Lee folded the paper in half so his son
could no longer continue reading. Anne Mai shook
her head at her little brother, encouraging him not
to pursue the matter any further.
“COOL! MONSTERS!” Walsh exclaimed as many
patrons began to stare. “ISN’T THIS WHERE
GODZILLA WAS BORN?”
“Try Japan, genius.” Peter giggled
sarcastically.
“JUST EAT YOUR PUDDING, BUTTUMS!” Walsh
snapped back.
By now even the head chef began peeping out
of the kitchen.
“Enough.” Mr. Lee pounded the table sternly.
The boys froze straight-backed. Walsh and Peter
quivered and tried to hide their faces from his
penetrating gaze. Mrs. Lee patted her husband’s
hand to cool him down.
“Sorry, Papa,” Henry murmured guiltily.
“Sorry, Mr. Lee,” his two friends chorused
together.
“Listen carefully,” Mr. Lee explained. “There’re
no monsters – no real ones anyway. The monster
the newspaper’s talking about is just a person the
writer’s angry about. It’s a metaphor. That’s all.”
“Oh, but there are real monsters, children,” a
voice suddenly swept over Mr. Lee’s shoulder. “Only
they’ve traded in their claws and fangs for straightpin
ties and fountain pens.” The voice belonged to a
