large fortune he visited in 1868 the <strong>Greek</strong><br />

islands Corfu, Ithaca, the Peloponnesus, and<br />

Asia Minor. In 1870 he began excavations in<br />

Troy on the hill <strong>of</strong> Hissarlik, believing<br />

strongly that the city <strong>of</strong> ancient Troy would<br />

be discovered. He confirmed the Homeric<br />

legend by discovering many ancient treasures.<br />

Schliemann from 1876 to 1878 excavated<br />

successfully Ithaca, Mycenae, and Orchomenus.<br />

In 1884-85 he started excavation<br />

at the ruins <strong>of</strong> palace at Tiryns (Tureens) 11<br />

Also in 1968, Takis Avgerinos and Lakis<br />

Papastathis (this time without Rena Hoeme)<br />

came out with the short movie Odos Ermou<br />

28 (28 Ermou Street). Director <strong>of</strong> Photography<br />

was Christos Magkos. Their plot is<br />

based in the novel “Dikeosis” (Justification)<br />

by Spiros Plaskovitis.<br />

One should also note that in 1968 the director<br />

<strong>of</strong> photography and cameraman Christos<br />

Magkos won an award for “Best <strong>Cinema</strong>tography”<br />

for his work in four short movies.<br />

O Drapetis (The Fugitive) directed by<br />

Kostas Zoes. that we mentioned above, Anef<br />

Oron (Unconditional); directed by Nikos Nikolaedis,<br />

To Depnon (Supper); directed by<br />

Fotis Lazaridis, and the short documentary<br />

Odos Ermou 28 (28th Ermou Street); directed<br />

by Demetris (Takis) Avgerinos and<br />

Lakis Papastathis.<br />

Out <strong>of</strong> the twenty-five short movies and<br />

documentaries that were produced in 1969,<br />

the committee in the Thessalonica film festival<br />

selected only six for competition. The<br />

winner for the “Best Short Movie” was the<br />

director Theodoros Maragkos with his movie<br />

Tsouf, based on a very short assay for the<br />

world’s problems in general. One should note<br />

that it is the third short animation movie<br />

since 1945.<br />

The Director Takis Kanelopoulos who<br />

had won an award for the “Best Short Documentary”<br />

Makedonikos Gamos (Macedonian<br />

Wedding) in 1960, he won again for the<br />

“Best Short Documentary” Kastoria. For the<br />

winner was Stavros Hasapis with his movie<br />

Labyrinth with subject the life in the big<br />

cities and focuses on the why some people<br />

feel lonely and bored.<br />

The Critics award (by the representatives<br />

<strong>of</strong> Athenian and Macedonian Press) in 1969<br />

went for the “Best Short Movie” again to director<br />

Theodoros Maragkos for his movie<br />

Tsouf. The “Honorary” distinction award<br />

was given to the short movies Media 70 directed<br />

by Michalis Papanikolaou and to the<br />

short documentary Kravgi Tis Petras (The<br />

Stone's Cry) written and directed by Nestor<br />

Matsas which we have mention about this<br />

short movie in 1967. The director Giorgos<br />

Maris won the Critics award for “Best New<br />

Director” for his short movie Partita. Worthy<br />

<strong>of</strong> note is also the short documentary I<br />

Giorti Den Telioni Pote (The Celebration<br />

Never Ends). It is written, produced, and directed<br />

by Nestor P. Matsas. Its plot about the<br />

special ways <strong>of</strong> celebrating the <strong>Greek</strong> Easter<br />

in many small cities and villages. The customs<br />

and folkloric celebrations are presented<br />

very colorfully along with the spring festivals<br />

in the natural beauty <strong>of</strong> Greece. The above<br />

documentary received in 1970 the “First<br />

Prize” award in Marseilles film festival.<br />

In 1970 a total <strong>of</strong> thirty-seven short movies<br />

and documentaries were produced.<br />

Strangely enough this year sixteen short movies<br />

and documentaries participated in Thessaloniki’s<br />

film festival for competition and two<br />

participated without competition. The winner<br />

for the “Best Short Documentary” was the<br />

producer, director and scriptwriter Giorgos<br />

Latinis with his documentary Epikinonia<br />

(Communication). The director Giorgos Latinis<br />

depicts the life and behavior <strong>of</strong> a deaf<br />

child, a very sentimental subject handled very<br />

skillfully. The winner for a “Short Movie<br />

with Theme” was the director and scriptwriter<br />

Kostas Papadopoulos for the movie Arhodisa<br />

Ke O Cowboy (The Noble Lady and<br />

the Cowboy). The award for the Best New
